今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、カナダのコロンビア、ブリティッシュ、バンクーバー出身のストーナー・ロックバンド、Black Mountaim ブラックマウンテン(2004-)。

カナダやアメリカでは人気があるバンドで、サイケデリックバンドとして扱われることが非常に多いのもうなづける、インナートリップ出来るバンドだよ！

ヴォーカルの Stephen McBean (本名 Stephen (Gord) Gordon McBean)スティーヴン・マクビーンが、ドラムのJoshua Wells ジョシュア・ウェルズと出会い、バンド活動中に。1st アルバムである『Black Mountain』を2004年にリリース。

その手応えから、バンド名を今の Black Mountain に変え、現在のようなサイケデリック色の強い、ストーナーロックになって来たバンドである。

今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、2016年4月1日リリースのアルバム『Ⅳ』からオープニング曲【Mothers Of The Sun】。

Black Mountain is a Canadian psychedelic rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia. The band is composed of Stephen McBean, Amber Webber, Matt Camirand, Jeremy Schmidt and Joshua Wells. Since forming in 2004, Black Mountain has released four LPs, Black Mountain (2005), In the Future (2008), Wilderness Heart (2010), and IV (2016), two EPs and a number of singles, mostly on the Jagjaguwar label.

“Mothers of the Sun” is single from IV is the fourth studio album by Black Mountain, released on April 1, 2016. The five-and-a-half year gap between two studio albums is the longest to date. It is also the band’s first album of new work since their 2012 soundtrack album for Year Zero.

８分越えのミュージックビデオなんだけど、聴いていると「長過ぎ〜」とはならないと思うんだけど…どうだった？

Lyra これ聴きながらハンバーグ捏ねたり、料理を作る時に爆音で聴いて作業すると無心になって仕事がはかどるのよ〜。

多分、ギターの音がヘビーでリフが頭に残る中で、浮遊感があるパートが出てくるから、人間の内面に入りやすくなるんだと思うの。

内へ、内へ。

すると無心になれる。

その無心を突き抜けると内なる宇宙にまで行けそうになるから、ある意味、解放もされる曲だと感じるよ。

手の込んだ料理を作る時や、集中作業する時に試してみて！

仕事がはかどるから！

つまりBlack Mountain のサウンドは聴いてるモノの意識に入って来る音だ、ってことになる。

ハマると抜けなくなるの。

ヴォーカルの Stephen McBean (本名 Stephen (Gord) Gordon McBean)はバンクーバーに1969年に生まれ。

ティーンエイジャーになるとパンクを良く聴くようになり、ビクトリアのミュージックシーンでバンド活動をするようになった。

Jerk Ward というバンドをやった後に、デモテープ作り、アルバム『Too Young To Thrash』リリース。その後2年間活動した後、解散してしまう。

Stephen は、Gusに加入してバンド活動を続け、脱退した後に組んだバンド Dead Teenager で現在のドラム Joshua Wells と出会う。

そして、 『Black Mountain』をリリース。

その後に Black Mountain 名義にしたアルバム『Black Mountain』を2005年にリリース。

サウンドトラックアルバムをリリースしたり、Spider- Man3 の劇中でも曲を使用されるなどの楽曲提供をしたり、と本国カナダ、アメリカではメジャーな存在になっている。

今までに４枚のスタジオアルバムをコンスタントにリリースしているBlack Mountain。

最新アルバムが今日紹介している４枚目のスタジオアルバム『Ⅳ』だ。

このアルバム通して、Lyraとしては静と動のアンビバレントなイメージを感じてしまう。

どちらか一方ではない。

表裏一体のようだ。

静を感じると必ずたたみかるように動的な歌詞、あるいは動的なギターサウンドが襲って来る。その襲ってくるサウンドが重なっている曲が多いのが『Ⅳ』だ。

その静と動のイメージは、この【Mothers Of The Sun】という曲で分かって頂けると思う。

Stephen のメタルギターが鳴る。

静寂を切り裂くように。

そのできた裂け目から、Amber のヒンヤリとした声が聞こえてくる。

すると、一面にBlack Mountain が描くスペイシーな世界が広がり出すのだ。

静かに広がって行く世界はまるで宇宙のようじゃない？

聴いていると分かると思う。

自分が宇宙と一緒に広がって行くようだ。

【Mothers Of The Sun】は、「教え」の曲だろう。

「教え」と言うとProtest Song (宗教音楽)を思い出してしまうだろう。

その意味も【Mothers Of The Sun】はあるが、「ああしなさい、こうしなさい」「受け入れなさい」といった強制的な定義はしていない。

どちらかといえば、シャーマンが口にするような呪文に近いかもしれない。

経典、マントラを唱えてるような歌い方にも感じるし、連続性が似ているでしょ。

そして、その呪文はもっとカジュアルでもある。

難しい話などはしていない。

ただ、世紀末の話をしているのだから。

太陽の母たち、、、それが直訳。

だが、この曲の母とは、私たち人間界の母たちのことを言ってもいるし、天界にいる母や聖母マリアのことを意味しているようにも取れる。

だから、Lyraは聖母と訳してみたの。

私たち人間のお母さんと、神に近い存在、神、強いては、地球という母なる大地をも含めた言い方をしたかったので「聖母」にしました。

その方が終わりの世界に合うと思う。

この星の世紀末は、くるのだろうか？

逆にここで言う、子供たちとは私たち人間だろう。

人間ってちっぽけな存在だ。

夜空を見上げるのが好き。

特に今の冬の空は、この【Mother Of The Sun】みたいに群青色の空が星々を美しく見せてくれる。

色の濃さから天上界を見てるような、宇宙にいるような感覚にとらわれる。

そんな時、自分の存在の小ささに愕然とする。

悩んだり、泣いたりしがちな自分がバカらしく思えてくるのだ。

自然界、海や、聳え立つ山々、宇宙を感じたら、その中で泣いている自分の何と豆粒なことよ！

Lyraなんて自然界の脅威からしたら、鼻息で吹き飛んであっという間に海王星まで飛んでいってしまうだろう豆粒さだ。

その巨大な自然界が怒りを表したのか？

歌詞の中の白い光線と茜色の球は、隕石かな？と思うよ。

そして全ての混乱は、愚かな人間が起こしている戦争や核爆弾だろう。

そんな世紀末を描いて、学びの地へと行くのはなぜだろう？

死して転生するのか？

又は、生き残り二度と繰り返さない為に伝えて行くか？

Lyraには、暗い世界を描きながら「どうする？貴方なら？」と言っているように感じた。

そう深読みしながらもう一度、【Mother Of The Sun】を聴いてみて。

きっと、今生きているのが価値のあるものだと思えてくるだろう。

醜い邪念や争いは無くさなければと、フツフツと熱い思いも感じるかもしれない。

何も考えたくなければ、それでも良い。

爆音にして聴いてみよう。

広い地球、宇宙を感じられるよ。

貴方が今この時代に、この時に、この瞬間に生きていることには、意味がある。

Stephen (Gord) Gordon McBean (b. 1969), was born in Vancouver and grew up in Kleinburg and Sidney (BC). As a teenager he became interested in music and became part of the local punk-rock scene in Victoria. He formed his first band, Jerk Ward, in 1981. in 1984, the band recorded a demo that was re-released in 2009 as Too Young To Thrash. The band evolved into Mission of Christ (MOC) who recorded a split 7″ in 1987.Two years later the band broke up and McBean moved to Vancouver where he started the band Gus. They released two singles, a split EP and an album The Progressive Science Of Breeding Idiots For A Dumber Society (1995). The band gave McBean his first experience with extensive touring and he later described the experience as a “bit of noise, bit of Melvins, funk, the Amrep stuff that was going on then. Lots of screaming. Lasted four years”.

In 1996 McBean asked drummer Joshua Wells (Radio Berlin)  to join his band Ex Dead Teenager. By 1999 it had morphed into a duo of Wells and McBean as Jerk With a Bomb. They signed with Scratch Records and Jagjaguwar in the US, and released three albums: Death To False Metal(1999), The Old Noise (2001) and Pyrokinesis(2003). The latter featured Amber Webber of Dream on Dreary on vocals.

Black Mountain

While McBean and Wells were still performing as Jerk With a Bomb in 2003, McBean began to demo material that included the song “Black Mountain”.  At the start of 2004, the two began working on the demos under the same name with contributions from Webber, bassist Matt Camirand and keyboard player Jeremy Schmidt. They recorded the eight track, self-titled debut album during the first half of the year. McBean would later describe the change as “it was almost like a release. I mean, I loved Jerk With A Bomb, but it got to a point where I was done with it, I was through with that part of my life”.

The first release under the new name was a split 7″ with Destroyer that featured the song “Bicycle Man”. The album was released in through Scratch Records in Canada in December 2004, while Jagjaguwar put it out a month later. The band toured around North America and Europe, while in June the 12″ single “Druganaut” b/w “Buffalo Swan” was released in the US. In August 2005 the band opened for Coldplay as their Twisted Logic Tour for three weeks, with their final opening in San Diego. In the same month the album was released in Germany through City Slang Records.

A vinyl single was released in April 2007 named “Surrender Sound Session: Unkle vs. Autolux/Black Mountain” with a remix of “No Hits” on the B side.

Their second album In the Future was a finalist for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize and was also nominated for “Best Alternative Album” in the 2009 Juno Awards. The song “Stay Free” from In the Future was featured on the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack.

In September 2010 Black Mountain performed in an amphitheater located in the woods of Oisterwijk at the Incubate (festival) in Tilburg, Netherlands.

Leader Stephen McBean also heads another similarly named band, Pink Mountaintops, while Webber performs with the band Kodiak Deathbeds and Lightning Dust.

Several members of the band have, for as long as a decade, worked for organizations that meet the basic living requirements of the chronically poor, drug addicted and mentally ill in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside neighborhood, such as Insite. In an interview, the band said: “After work we all try not to think too hard about the effect it has on our lives. It keeps us grounded.”

In 2010 McBean moved to Los Angeles. The band released their third album Wilderness Heart in September 2011, which was produced by Randall Dunn and Dave Sardy. It was named as a longlisted nominee for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize, and appeared on the !earshot Top 50 chart.

On April 1, 2016, they released their fourth studio album, IV.
