キラキラした人達と言うのがLyraの考えるMGMT。

シンセサイザーを前面に押し出した、キラキラしたPopサウンドが素敵。

なのに明るいはずが、どこか甘酸っぱい物悲しさが漂う、まさかのEmo仕様。

そして、ずっとサイケデリック・ポップの先駆けのイメージでいたのだけど、なんと南アメリカ圏ではTeen受けする踊れるバンドなのだ。

物悲しさは歌詞が、変わった目線で物事を見てるからかも。

ラブソングが多いバンドと言うのも好きなポイントだが、これまた、どこか変わっている。

今回は前回よりはマイルド。

今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、アメリカ合衆国ニューヨーク州ブルックリン出身のAndrew VanWxngarden アンドリュー・ヴァンウィンガーデンと、Benjamin Nicholas Hunter “Ben” Goldwasser ベン・ゴールドワッサーを中心に結成されたサイケデリック・ポップ・バンド、MGMT（エム・ジー・エム・ティー）。

前のバンド名「The Management」のManagementを略したものである。

今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、MGMTのシングル【Love Always Remains】(August 30, 2005)。

メジャーのコロンビアと契約を交わすキッカケともなった、2005年発表のEP『Time to Pretend』をCD作品として復刻した新『Time to Pretend』に収録されている。

可愛らしいラブソングにも取れるし、もっと辛辣に世の中を見るている男の愛の歌にも感じる。

とても不思議な歌で、時間の流れが分からなくなる。

聞き手によって歌詞の意味あいがかわるのは当たり前だが、この曲は振り幅が激しい。

天国と地獄のように互いに離れていても、相互関係が続く歌。

まるでこの映画みたいに、とても恐ろしくて悲しい愛の物語みたい。

2007年10月2日にデビューアルバム『Oracular Spectacular オラキュラー・スペクタキュラー』が、デジタルリリースされ、翌2008年1月22日にCDとLPでもリリースされた（日本盤発売は2008年7月2日）。

このアルバムは、メディアから高い評価を受け商業面でも成功を果たし、2010年3月時点でアメリカで580,000枚、イギリスで461,000枚を売り上げているほど。

この曲は、そのメジャーデビュー前の『We Don’t Cozy EP』に入っていた。インディーロックバンドMGMT による最初のEPリリース。

最近は新しいバージョンの「Love Always Remains」と「Kids」をまとめて、Cantora Recordsでリリースされたように、人気のある曲なのだ。勿論、このEP自体もだ。

前に紹介した超ヒット・シングル【Kid】が、かなりイカレタ歌詞にイカレタMVだったから、このラブソングは、おとなしいかもしれない。

でもテーマとしたら、彼方よりこの曲の方が壮大で良い。

優しやに満ち溢れているし、崇高だ。

このMVはオフィシャルではない。が、ホラーでありラブストーリーである【Let the Right One In 僕のエリ 200歳の少女】にピッタリな歌詞だと思う。

因みに【Let the Right One In ぼくのエリ 200歳の少女』（スウェーデン語: Låt den rätte komma in)は、2008年のスウェーデン映画。

John Ajvide Lindqvist ヨン・アイヴィデ・リンドクヴィストによる2004年の小説『MORSE -モールス-』を原作者自らが脚色した吸血鬼映画である。原題は「正しき者を招き入れよ」という意味。

ヴァンパイアは「どうぞ」と家主に言われないと家には入れない事からこのタイトルなのだろう。

このブログで【僕のエリ】について書こうと思いながらも、数年経ってしまったが、いつかちゃんと感想を書きたいなと思っています。

MGMTのこの曲と映画は関係ないけれど、この映画のスウェーデン版の方ならば、凄く似た雰囲気があると思ったので、映画レビュー出す前なのに、チラッと紹介しちゃいましたわ、、、。

永遠の愛であり、永遠の友情。

そして色恋感情をどけたとしても、互いに変えは効かない、なくてはならない初めての存在に出会えた2人。

そんな大切な掛け替えのない存在に対する想いを描いた作品だとLyraは思うので、この曲のサビとピッタリ合致するのです。

【Love Always Remains】。

片方が命がなくなり、片方(エリ)は、獲物さえあれば永遠に生きるから、2人の愛には(肉体)限りはある。

でも【愛は永遠に残る】と思う。

愛だけは、記憶として血のように絶えず体内に流れていくと思うから。

そう言えば、LyraったらまたやらかしてJoy DivisionのIan Curtisの誕生日(7月15日)に合わせて和訳したのをこのブログにUPしようとしたら、その日の気分じゃないからと、やめて「別の日にUPしよう」と思いつつ、こんなに経過してしまったけど、このMGMTの【Love Always Remains】を聞いていると、アンサーソングじゃないか？と思えてくるの。真逆を歌っているのにも関わらず、、、。

「愛が2人を分かつ」ってのと、「愛は永遠に残る」ってイメージが、不思議と対比しているのに、似た冷ややかなイメージに感じてしまう。

それは極寒の『ぼくのエリ』の舞台のスウェーデンの雪の街のよう。

誰も知らない所で、永遠の愛が生まれ、育まれる。

「そして太陽は永遠にそこにある

もし君が闇を恐れる時には

君を幸せにするよ」

太陽は愛する君だよ。

Love Always Remains

この愛は永遠なのでしょう？

 

We (don’t) Care EP” is the first EP release by the indie rockband MGMT (at the time known as The Management). Newer versions of the tracks “Love Always Remains” and “Kids” were later released on MGMT’s Cantora Records release “Time To Pretend EP” (2005) and an additional version of “Kids” appears on their debut album “Oracular Spectacular” (2007-2008).

The EP was recorded with friend and engineer Billy Bennett in Athens, GA at his father’s plumbing office.

 

For all I know, the only song that stays original to this EP is Everything’s Happening So Fast, and that’s kinda sad. It’s such a good song and it seems that this EP doesn’t get a lot of recognition, so I don’t think many have heard it.

I’m surprised that this doesn’t get much acknowledgment for A) being MGMT (or the Management)’s first EP, and B) just being a great EP in general. Every track is such a good time and it’s always great to hear a different version of a song as popular as Kids and see really just how different it was.

Just Becuz is fun, and with the opening and closing comments from Andrew like, “Makes no sense” and “Oh, that’s it?” present, it just adds to the song feeling more personal. Like they are playing it just for you.

I also want to talk about the two title tracks, We Care and We Don’t Care. It’s nice that we get to hear Ben singing in We Don’t Care, as we don’t really get that often. Also, during both songs choruses, these two lines connecting both songs play into a kinda narrative that doesn’t matter but is just fun to hear, with We Care having the line “We breathe the air, but we care” and We Don’t Care having the line “There’s poison in the air, but we don’t care”.
