‘Stay” (stylized in all caps) is a song by Australian rapper and singer the Kid Laroi and Canadian singer Justin Bieber. It was released through Grade A Productions and Columbia Records on 9 July 2021, as the lead single from Laroi’s reloaded mixtape, F*ck Love 3: Over You. The song was produced by Cashmere Cat, Charlie Puth, Omer Fedi, and Blake Slatkin. It was written by the two artists and the producers, alongside FnZ members Finatik and Zac, and Haan. The song marks the second collaboration between Laroi and Bieber, following Bieber’s song, “Unstable”, a track off of his sixth studio album, Justice, which was released in March 2021.

リリースまでの経緯

2020年9月20日、LaroiはInstagramライブストリームで曲のスニペットを共有。2020年10月29日にRollingLoudからのライブストリームで初披露し、高品質の長いスニペットを共有(2021年5月)。

2021年6月2日にDiscordサーバーで曲が完全にリーク。 2021年にリードアーティストとしてラロイの最初のメジャーシングルリリースになるこの曲は、2021年4月にリリースされた拡張プレイである『Freedom』リリース以来、Justin の最初のメジャーシングルでもある。

2020年9月にLAROIのInstagramストーリーで最初にプレビューされ、翌月、DJSchemeが主催するRollingLoudが実施したTwitchインタビューでプレビュー。 2020年11月のGenius Liveコンサートでもこの曲を演奏し、2021年5月31日、トラック全体がリーク。

 LAROIの当時のマネージャーであるLilBibbyが2021年4月に投稿したテキスト会話のスクリーンショットで、このトラックが彼の次のプロジェクトに登場する可能性が高いことが明らかになりました。 LAROIのトラックを激しく宣伝していたので、事前にシングルとしてドロップすると広く推測されていた。これは、2021年7月のInstagramでもリークされている。

因みにJustin Bieberのデビュー以来のマネージャーは、この度Kid Laroi のマネージャーにもなったというのだから、Lyraの深読みだけど今回のコラボレコーションは、同胞の契り的な意味合いもあるのかな？と感じてる。

もしそうならば、未来は明るいと言われてるような大ヒットを飛ばせるから2人はやっぱり凄いと思ってしまった。これは勿論、楽曲が素晴らしいから。そして2人のフットワークの軽さ、キャラクターの良さもあるのだ。

作曲

Kid Laroiは、【for about a year now】という曲を作ってあったのだが、プロデューサーのBlake Slatkin 、Omel Fendi 、Charlie Puth とBlake の家でぶらぶらしながら曲を作成していた時の物らしい。

Charlie Puthは自分の楽しみのためにキーボードで曲のメロディーを演奏していたわけだが、これをLaroiが気に入り、制作ソフトウェアAvid ProToolsに入れて曲を作成したいと考えた。

「これはおそらく俺が今までに作った曲を作るための最も有機的な方法だった」と感じたと言う。

Laroiは、もしこれをJustinが歌えば「完璧に聞こえるだろう」と考えた。そこで、Justin Bieber がレコーディングしているスタジオに行き、レコーディングした。

曲について

【Stay】は、ピアノのキー、重いドラム、「飛び散る」シンセを組み込んだ、ペースの速いシンセポップ、ヒップポップ、ポップロックの曲だ。

上向きのダーツキーボードリフはそのバックボーンとして機能しているし、これは最終的にはコーラスのメロディーになる。繰り返されるメロディックセル。

一部の批評家は、Justin Bieberの6番目のスタジオアルバムである『Justin ジャスティン』（2021）の音楽との類似点を発見している。

ジャスティンのシングルと比較していて、【Hold On】とアルバムトラック「DieforYou」と「Somebody」StereogumのChrisDeVilleは、「[p] ost-SoundCloud pop-rap as effervescent Justice-style 80spop」と特徴づけている。

 

【Stay】の「失恋を煽る」歌詞は、Laroi が過ちを犯している問題のある関係についての物語を設定するときに、ラロイの有毒な行動を強制していた。

コーラスでは、彼はパートナーに彼と一緒にいるように頼む前に、彼の破られた約束について歌っている。裏切られたから、いけないことをした、という言い訳に取れる歌詞だ、

Justinの歌う詩では、彼の、愛する人なしでは生きられないという気持ちを帯びていてる。

どちらにしても全ては「愛を信じなさい。」と言う気持ちを重んじてる歌詞だ。

そしてKid Laroiと Justin Bieberの声が最後の合唱で一緒になると、歌は最高潮に達し、感情の爆発が起きるのだ。

恋人の許しに対するラロイの願いと、恋人に対するビーバーの賞賛を詳しく説明していて面白い歌詞なので、Lyraは、Kid Laroiのヤンチャすぎる感じそのままに和訳して、Justinの方は、相変わらず変わらない可愛いまんまの彼のキャラクターから、可愛く縋り付く様に和訳してみました。

めちゃくちゃ笑えるエピソードだ。でも歌詞(Lyrics)がまだ決まっていない時って、適当に単語並べたり、ラララ〜とか言いながら作るから似たような物。

このKid Laroiの製作話を聞いていて、Lyraは、作曲中にデタラメ英語で歌うベンジーを思い出しちゃったな。

それにしても「クソ」ばかり言ってるJusinとKid Laroiは笑える。漫才みたいで見てみたいね〜、その光景を「本人は狂ってる」と言ってるけど、かなり可愛いと思うな〜。

このMVでも互いに向き合って歌う所が子犬が戯れあっているみたいだもの。

また2人がコラボレーションするのを聞いてみたいな。

どちらもヤンチャな割に、とってもラブリーな歌詞だから、女子は嬉しくなるものね。

個人的には激しいのが好きなのでww、もうちょいセクシーなのが欲しい気もしますが、世界中で売れるには、控え目にしないと色々と現在は難しいから、これくらいが丁度良いのだろう。

そこら辺も考えていたらウー、と感心してLyra唸ってしまう。

“Stay” peaked at number one the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Laroi’s first chart-topper and Bieber’s eighth. The song additionally topped the Billboard Global 200 and charts in twenty countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Korea and Sweden. It has also peaked within the top-ten in 18 other countries.

In a text conversation screenshot posted by LAROI’s then-manager Lil Bibby in April 2021, it was revealed that the track is likely to make an appearance on his upcoming project. With LAROI’s heavy teasing of the track, it was widely speculated to drop as a single beforehand, which he confirmed in a July 2021 Instagram post, revealing its release date.

The Kid LAROI:

I’ve had “Stay” for about a year now. I was over at my friend Blake’s [Slatkin] house. It was me, Blake, my boy Omer [Fedi] and Charlie Puth. We were all just hanging out, and Charlie went over to the keyboard and just started playing stuff…and what he played was the “Stay” [melody], and I was like, ‘What’s that?’ and he’s like, ‘Oh, no, I’m just fucking around.’ And I’m like, ‘No, no, no. Pull up a Pro Tools session, record this shit, this shit’s fire.’

It was probably the most organic way of making a song I’ve ever done – ever. It reminded me of the first time [I got to] get into a studio and stuff. We didn’t plan for the song to happen. We never planned a studio session or anything like that, so it was crazy.

One day I was just listening to it and was like, fuck, Justin [Bieber] would sound perfect on this, so I actually pulled up to the studio that he works at, and I just came with the fucking file. I was like, ‘You ready?’ and he was like, ‘Yup’. And he just did it. He just went into the booth and just freestyled the shit off top; it was the craziest shit. I was like, ‘Yo, this guy’s out of his mind.’

He’d be like, ‘Yo, do you like this? Is this good?’ And I’d be like, ‘Just keep going. Keep fucking going. Just shut up and keep fucking going,’

On 20 September 2020, Laroi shared a snippet of the song on an Instagram live stream, followed by a longer snippet in better quality that was previewed on a live stream from Rolling Loud on 29 October 2020. Bieber’s contribution to the song was revealed on 31 May 2021. The song leaked in full on a Discord server on 2 June 2021.

“Stay” marks Laroi’s first major single release as a lead artist in 2021 and Bieber’s first major single as a lead artist since the release of his extended play, Freedom, which was released in April 2021. On 3 June 2021, Scooter Braun, who has been Bieber’s manager from the start of his career, also became Laroi’s manager.

Laroi had the song “for about a year now”. He created the song while hanging out with producers Blake Slatkin, Omer Fedi, and Charlie Puth at Slatkin’s house. Puth played the melody of the song on the keyboard just for fun, but Laroi ended up liking it and wanted to get it in production software Avid Pro Tools to use it to create a song. He felt “it was probably the most organic way of making a song I’ve ever done – ever”. Laroi thought Bieber “would sound perfect”, so he then went to the studio that Bieber records at; they finished recording the song, but Bieber was hesitant about whether his vocals sounded good or not.

Stay” is a fast-paced synth-pop, hip pop, and pop rock song that incorporates piano keys, heavy drums, and “splattering” synths. The track’s upward-darting keyboard riff serves as its spine and eventually becomes the chorus melody. Over a repeated melodic cell, Laroi and Bieber switch between head voice and chest voice on a minor sixth. Jon Caramanica of The New York Times described the track as a “hyper-slick” hybridization of new wave and pop-punk. Some critics found similarities between it and the music from Bieber’s sixth studio album, Justice (2021). Justin Curto from Vulture compared the song’s sound to Justice single “Hold On” and album tracks “Die for You” and “Somebody”. Stereogum‘s Chris DeVille characterized it as “[p]ost-SoundCloud pop-rap as effervescent Justice-style ’80s pop”.

The “heartbreak-fueled” lyrics to “Stay” enforce Laroi’s toxic behaviour as he sets up a story about a troubled relationship where he is at fault. In the chorus, he sings about his broken promises before begging for his partner to stay with him: “I do the same thing I told you that I never would / I told you I’d change, even when I knew I never could.” Bieber’s verse echoes similar sentiments as he belts out lyrics about being unable to live without his loved one: “When I’m away from you, I miss your touch / You’re the reason I believe in love.” The song reaches its climax as Laroi and Bieber’s voices join together in the last chorus.

The official music video for “Stay”, directed by Colin Tilley, premiered alongside the song’s release at midnight on 9 July 2021. Elisa Talbot served as the video’s cinematographer while Jack Winter produced it, with Jamee Ranta and Tilley as executive producers.
