今日はいつものセクシーなDepeche Modeとは違い、もう一つの特徴である宗教、神への歌を和訳しましょう。
歌詞はMartinがやはり書いている。いつも書いて来たけれど、彼の言葉は非常に真剣で信心深く、愛に満ちている。
男女の恋愛のエロティズムはもちろんの事、神への愛に準ずる為には、この身をも投げ出さんばかりの激しい崇拝で満ち溢れている。
それは最先端の音を模索して来た彼らの作業とはある意味真逆で、何百年も脈々と培われてきたバチカンの神父のキャソックの様に、変わらぬ伝統と痛みを喜びへと変換さえする落ち着きを放っている。

“John the Revelator“/”Lilian” is the second double A-side single by Depeche Mode and their forty-fourth single overall, released on 5 June 2006. Both songs are featured on Depeche Mode’s 2005 album, Playing the Angel and serve as the fourth single from the album (see 2006 in British music). The single became another UK Top 20 hit for the band, reaching number 18.

いつもと違う曲
いつもと違い挑戦的。
神に使えるはずの預言者への疑惑の申し立てをしているから語彙がキツイのだが、いつも聖職者には遜った話し方をするから、怒りをも感じて意外だ。
この曲は【John the Revelator “/” Lilian 】として2006年6月5日にリリースされたDepeche Modeによる2番目のダブルA面シングルが初リリースになる。
全体では44番目のシングル。両方の曲はDepecheModeの2005年のアルバム『Playingthe Angel』でもしゅうろくされており、 アルバムからは、4番目のシングルだった。シングルはバンドのもう1つのUKトップ20ヒットとなり、18位が最高位。
【John theRevelator】がBBC6 MusicのBリストにも追加され、他のBBCプレイリストやXfm Londonのプレイリストを作成できなかったらしい。また、WKQX（シカゴ）を含む米国のいくつかのオルタナティブロックラジオ局でもヘビロテされている。 2006年を通して、シングルとしてリリースされなかったにもかかわらずだ。いかに人気バンドで愛されているかが分かる。

【John The Revelator】は、伝統的なゴスペルブルースのコールアンドレスポンスソングが元ネタだ。音楽評論家のThomas Wordは、「戦前のアコースティック音楽の中で最も強力な曲の1つです… [これは]に非常に影響を与えてきました。」
アメリカのゴスペルブルースミュージシャンのBlind Willy Johnson は1930年に【John The Revelator】をレコーディングし、その後、さまざまなアーティストが曲をプレイ、レコーディングして来た。多くの場合、詩や音楽にバリエーションがあり、必ずしも完コピ(完全に同じ構成)とは言えなくなっているので、非常に昔のブルーズやソウルは、レコーディング状況が悪いのと同じで、管理の方もノウハウがないこともあり劣悪なのだ。でもその代わりに、各アーティストの味がダイレクトに出るという効果もあるのだ。

Depeche Mode version
その実力を持って、さまざまなアーティストによって録音されて来たこの曲が、彼らによるとデジタルとゴスペルのミクスチャーという非常に珍しく面白い作品に変貌していると思う。
多くの場合、ソングライターのクレジットが異なるのがこの曲の特徴にもなってしまっているのだが、Depeche Modeの場合も他のアーティスト等と同じくオリジナルの作詞家ではなく、Martin Goreのクレジットになっている。
両面シングル【JohntheRevelator】としてリリースされたのだが、Martin Gore の功績によるものであり、彼はそれを「啓示の書の著者についての非常に再解釈された古い福音の曲」と説明している。
余談だが、Larkin Poe の曲のカバーは、Fox TVの番組『Lucifer ルシファー』のシリーズ3エピソード13エンディングミュージックとして使用されいたり、雰囲気は違うがこの曲を耳にしたことがある人も多いだろう。
曲のタイトルは、ヨハネの黙示録の著者としての役割を果たしているパトモスのヨハネに言及している。 キリスト教徒ではないと必要な知識ではないし、外国語文学を専攻しているものでも「聖書は読んでおくと良い」と教授に勧められても実際に読んでいる人は少ないだろう。だから、この歌詞には違和感があるだろうし、理解もする気持ちにならない人、興味が湧かない人もいるかもしれない。
そんな人達の為にサラッとわかりやすく言えば、賢者に対して嘘偽りを見出した者が、その嘘を暴く意思で声をあげている、とイメージすれば良い。
このタイトルのJohnは預言者ヨハネのことである。
彼が書いた書の一部は、7つの封印の開封とその結果として、終末論的な出来事に焦点を当てている。
そのさまざまなバージョンで、この歌はアメリカの霊歌の伝統における聖書からのいくつかの節を引用しているからLyra個人としては、かなり面白い題材である。皆さんはどうだろう？
因みに、オリジナルのBlind Willy Johnson ブラインドウィリージョンソンは、1930年4月20日にジョージア州アトランタで開催されたコロムビアレコードの5回目で最後のレコーディングセッションで【John The Revelatorをレコーディングした。Blind Willyのヴォーカルとギターには、Willy B.Haris （最初の妻と呼ばれることもある）が同行。
曲の応答部分を歌い、 ヴォーカルは、「誰が書いたのか、John The Revelator」というコーラス・ラインとともに「マントラのように繰り返された」というコーラス・ラインとともに、曲に「恐怖と予感」を与えている。
彼の歌詞は、聖書のいくつかの箇所を参照しているため、メッセージ性が強い。
それをMartinが少しシャープにまとめたのが、このDepeche Mode ヴァージョンの【John The Levarator】だと思う。
ヨハネが間違いを書いたにも関わらず、世間は彼を認め、持ち上げいていく様子を描いているのは、今現在の国家に対する批判にも似て、全く絵空事には思えない。
悪を悪と認め、声をあげるDepeche Modeは、いつも男らしく力強いメッセージを投げつけて来る。
彼らのように動き、表現していけるパワーや信頼性をリスペクトしている。今までも、これからも、ずっと。
正しい者が裁かれ、悪人や愚者が間違った行いを当たり前にする姿が、余りにも醜悪過ぎるために、この世界に嫌気がさして来た。
きっと人はこうやって人間に落胆し、この世界からおさらばしたくなるのだ。狂った人間ばかり。そういう人種は同じ部落を作り群れるらしい。狭い、小さな狭小住居の埃のよう。
だがその世界を離れれば、善人や生きる希望を与えてくれる人達がいる。
正しい行いをし、生の喜びや愛を与えてくれる人がいるから、まだ私は生きていける。
Depeche Modeもそうだ。正義の声をあげ続けて来たヒーロー。
間違いを正し、世界に愛を。
彼らは「声を上げなければ、この世が終わってしまう」と畏怖の念を感じ、間違いを正し世界を平和に導きたいと語っていた。
その思いに強く共感している。
私利私欲から逃れて、世界が変わるかもしれない。

“John the Revelator” is a traditional gospel blues call and response song. Music critic Thomas Ward describes it as “one of the most powerful songs in all of pre-war acoustic music … [which] has been hugely influential to blues performers”. American gospel-blues musician Blind Willie Johnson recorded “John the Revelator” in 1930 and subsequently a variety of artists have recorded their renditions of the song, often with variations in the verses and music.
“John the Revelator” has been recorded by a variety of artists, often with different songwriter credits. English electronic music band Depeche Mode adapted the song for their 2006 album Playing the Angel. Released as a double-sided single “John the Revelator / Lilian”, it is credited to Martin Gore. He described it as “a heavily re-interpreted old gospel tune about the author of the Book of Revelation”.
Larkin Poe’s cover of the song was used as the Series 3 episode 13 ending music for the Fox TV show Lucifer.
The song’s title refers to John of Patmos in his role as the author of the Book of Revelation. A portion of that book focuses on the opening of seven seals and the resulting apocalyptic events. In its various versions, the song quotes several passages from the Bible in the tradition of American spirituals.
“John the Revelator” was added to BBC 6 Music’s B-List, but it failed to make any other BBC playlists or that of Xfm London. It was also played by a few alternative rock radio stations in the US, including WKQX (Chicago), throughout 2006, despite not being released as a single there.
“John the Revelator” was edited down several seconds for the single, while “Lilian” was slightly remixed and the introduction was shortened.
The single is the first UK double A-side release by the band since “Blasphemous Rumours / Somebody” in 1984.
“John The Revelator” was played during Depeche Mode’s Touring the Angel tour and can be watched on the tour’s DVD.

Blind Willie Johnson Version
Blind Willie Johnson recorded “John the Revelator” during his fifth and final recording session for Columbia Records in Atlanta, Georgia on April 20, 1930. Accompanying Johnson on vocal and guitar is Willie B. Harris (sometimes identified as his first wife), who sings the response parts of the song. Their vocals add a “sense of dread and foreboding” to the song, along with the chorus line “Who’s that a writin’, John the Revelator” “repeated like a mantra”.
Johnson’s lyrics reference a number of passages from the Bible:
