美しい満月= Super Moon!
お月様は大好き。
どんなに辛い時でも、ジーッと空を見上げているだけで癒してくれる存在だ。
月光浴をすれば傷ついた身も心まで治してくれる。
そんな事を考えながらお月様を眺めていたら、満月な上に、Superだったせいか、久しぶりにこの曲が頭の中に流れて来た。

今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、スコットランド、エジンバラで結成されたバンド、The Waterboys ウォーターボーイズ。
1983年に Vocal, Guitar, Pianoなどマルチプレイヤーのシンガーソングライター、Mike Scott マイク・スコットによって結成される。
バンド名はLou Reed ルー・リードの曲の歌詞から名付けられた。

Mike Scottは エジンバラ大学で文学も学んでいた為、美しい歌詞を書き、彼の歌詞の評価が高い。
「現代のBob Dylan ボブ・ディラン」とか、「スコットランドの吟遊詩人」などと評されることも多い。

The Waterboys are a Scottish-Irish folk rock band formed in Edinburgh in 1983 by Scottish musician Mike Scott. The band’s membership, past and present, has been composed mainly of musicians from Scotland. Mike Scott has remained as the only constant member throughout the band’s career. They have explored a number of different styles, but their music is mainly a mix of folk music with rock and roll. They dissolved in 1993 when Scott departed to pursue a solo career. They reformed in 2000, and continue to release albums and tour worldwide. Scott emphasises a continuity between The Waterboys and his solo work, saying that “To me there’s no difference between Mike Scott and the Waterboys; they both mean the same thing. They mean myself and whoever are my current travelling musical companions.”
Michael Scott (born 14 December 1958) is a Scottish singer, songwriter and musician. He is the founding member, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of rock band The Waterboys. He has also produced two solo albums, Bring ‘em All In and Still Burning. Scott is a vocalist, guitarist and pianist, and has played a large range of other instruments, including the bouzouki, drums, and Hammond organ on his albums. Scott is also a published writer, having released his autobiography, Adventures of a Waterboy, in 2012.

月に彗星。
海が広がる世界。
それに、月に例えて人間と言うものをあらわしているのが美しいし、悲しくもある。
宇宙人とよく言われるLyraだけど、宇宙というか、地球の自然やこの世に存在する全ての森羅万象を愛しているのだよ。
変わっているのは仕方ないけれど、人一倍感じ易いだけ。
だから、美しい歌詞に触れると心が癒されるし、
生きる上での指針をもらう時もあるし、
不思議な世界観に酔ってしまう時もある。
全てが当てはまるのがこの【The Whole Of The Moon】だろう。
物語を読んでいるような気分になる。

現代のボブ・ディラン、スコットランドの吟遊詩人などと評されることも多いMike Scottの歌詞。
だが、初期はNYパンクの影響を受けたニューウェーブバンドとしてスタートしたのだから面白いバンドだ。
U2のフォロワー的な扱われ方もされていたという。
今日紹介している3rdアルバム『This Is the Sea 』で客演したアイルランド人フィドラー、Steve Wickham スティーブ・ウィッカム（U2の代表曲：SundayBloodySundayにてヴァイオリンを弾いていることで知られている）に影響を受け、Mikeはアイルランドに移住。
アイリッシュトラッドミュージックに傾倒して行き、4thアルバム、『Fisherman’s Blues』で、アイルランド伝統音楽を取り入れ、大きく作風が変化したため賛否両論を呼んだが、セールス的には一番の成功を収めた。
後にアルバムを1枚出してから、Mike はニューヨークに移住し、ロックに回帰した作品を発表する（Steve Wickhamは脱退）。
WATERBOYSでの活動は休止し、ソロ名義で２枚のアルバムを発表。しかしセールスが振るわなかったこともあり、2000年にまたWATERBOYSでの活動を再開し、アルバムを一枚発表する。
そして03年Steve が復帰し、アイルランド伝統音楽を取り入れた路線に再び回帰した。
2011年にはアイルランドの詩人ウィリアム・バトラー・イェイツの詩に曲を付けたコンセプトアルバムを発表し、高い評価を受けた。
Mumford & Sonsに代表されるフォークロア要素を取り入れたロックの流行の影響や、また代表作Fisherman’s Bluesの6枚組ボックスセットが発売されるなど、近年再評価の機運が高まっている。
2013年にはキャリア最長の全米ツアーが行われ、Fisherman’s Blues再現ライブも好評だと言う。

初めはパンクだったのが、アイルランドの音楽家Steve Wickhamに影響を受けてアイリッシュミュージックのアルバムを出して、吟遊詩人とまで言われてしまうのだからMike は凄い。
スピリットが合致したのか、順応性が高いのか？
両方だと思うが、長い歴史のある文化を吸収し、自らの色をつけて消化して創造するのは才能があるからだと思う。
文学をきちんと学んだ素養があるから物語性が高い詩を書けるし、【The Whole Of The Moon】の様な寓話的な民謡のような世界観を出せるのだろう。
【The Whole Of The Moon】は、冬をイメージした曲だ。
ニューヨークの冬のストリートで封筒の裏に殴り書きをするかのような歌詞を書く、、、そんな命題を当時の彼女に「書けないでしょう？」と言われて書いたからか、聴いているとヒンヤリとした冬の夜空を見上げながら、月を眺め、夜の闇夜に広がる大海原に恋い焦がれている自分に重ね合わせてしまう。
「この歌詞が面白いなあ」とLyraが思う箇所は、対比がハッキリしているものを並べているところ。
歌詞の主人公は三日月を見たのに、大して彼女は月全体を見ている。
一角獣と言う純潔な夢の世界の生き物と、生命を壊してしまう砲弾を合わせたかと思うと、宮殿と桟橋を合わせたり、真逆なものを対比させている。
この対比がLyraには、世の中の善悪や自分と他者、宇宙と地球、美醜、明暗、そして、人の生き死にを表しているように感じてしまう。
人生はどれが正しいという明確な答えはない。
でも、どんな環境に居たとしても人の幸せとは考え方次第だと思う。
凄いお金持ちで何不自由なく暮らしていたとしても、愛し合える人や理解し合える人がいなければ幸せとは言えないし、
逆の立場だとしても、目指す夢があり愛し合える人がいたらこれ以上の幸せはないだろう。
どんな国いようと、どんな状況に置かれていようとも自分次第だと思う。
自分という確かなものをしっかりと持ち、
今この時を感じ、
見えるものを美しいと理解出来て、
分かり合える人を愛し、
生きていることに感謝出来る人間は、どんなことがあっても負けない。
ゼロも100にしてしまうだろう。
出来ないと周りに言われても、全てを受け入れて全体像を見れる人間は不可能を可能に出来ると思う。
もしかしたら、空だって飛べるだろう。
この美しいメロディに乗る【The Whole Of The Moon】は、そう言う人の生き方の違いや物の見方で世界が変わる、と言っている歌だとLyraは感じた。
壮大な世界観がある物語だと思う。
主人公は三日月としてしか見ていないものを、彼女は月全体を見られる人間だと言っている。
これは、物事をただパッと見るだけでなくその存在の全体像を見る先見の目があれば、成功する、と言っているようだし、全てを受け取れれば幸せを感じられるとも言っているのだ。
全て自分たち次第で変わると言うことだ。
口で自慢したり説くよりも、黙って実行したり実現してしまう人間の方が素晴らしいとも言っている。
ただ、どんな生き方が良いとは断言していない。
それは、その人それぞれの受け取り方に委ねるべきだからだろう。
正解なんてないからだ。
生きていく「貴方が幸せだ」と思えた生き方が正解だから。
そんなそれぞれの違った生き方や見方を、美しい月や彗星や冬空に広がる澄み切った星々に合わせて語ることによって、辛辣すぎるこの世界を、物語のように美しくまとめている。
だから、嫌味なく聴いていられるし、美しい歌詞の世界によって、旅をしているような不思議な気分になってしまうのだろう。
どんな時でも狭い見方で、頭の固い考え方はしたくないと思う。
出来れば【The Whole Of The Moon】のように、月の全体像を見れるような物の本質を見抜ける人間でありたい。
そして、心に描いたことを実現できる力強さを持ち続けたい。
それさえ出来たら、この汚い世界にもBrigadoon ( 儚い魔法の場所)を見つけることが出来るだろう。
そして、高い高い夢に手が届き、あっと言う間に理想の自分を手に入れられるのだ。
きっとその時に見える月は、今、以上の大きくて美しい【The Whole Of The Moon】に違いない。

☆おまけ☆
プライベートが、何かと話題になってしまったMike Scott。
The Waterboysは知らなくても、あのMike Scottとして覚えてしまってる人もいるかも。
初めて聞いた時はLyraもびっくりして唖然としてしまった。
2016年4月19日日本の漫画家である、ろくでなし子がマイク・スコットとの婚約を発表したのを聞いて「本当にThe WaterboysのMikeなの？なんでまた？」と信じられなかったわ(後に10月21日にマイク・スコットがツイッターにて結婚を発表)。
2016年10月22日、東京西麻布のイタリアンレストランにて結婚式が行われ、The Waterboys メンバーのSteve Wickham や、ろくでなし子弁護団、ホラー作家の岩井志麻子らが結婚式に出席。Mike は式で、新曲「Payo Payo Chin」(ぱよぱよち～ん)を披露したと言うが、、、何なんだろ？
前に”Rock Rock Rokudenashiko” を作って起訴されていたろくでやし子を支持していると聞いた時も「何？」とびっくりしたが、アレがキッカケだもんね。
世の中、何が起きるか分からない。
こう言う変わったお話、好きよ。
だから、生きるって面白いんだなあ、と感じるエピソードです。
「人生は楽しいびっくり箱だ！」と思ってLyraも自由に生きて行くわ！
The subject of the lyrics has inspired speculation, some of which has been rebutted by the writer. The song began as a “scribble on the back of an envelope on a wintry New York street”, after Scott’s girlfriend asked him if it was difficult to write a song.
Like The Waterboys’ first single “A Girl Called Johnny”, the song is a tribute to an inspirational figure or figures. In each line, the singer describes his own perspective and immediately contrasts it with that of the song’s subject, summarizing the difference with the line “I saw the crescent / You saw the whole of the moon”.
Allmusic instead suggests that its subject is a number of people who inspired Scott, including writer C. S. Lewis and the musician Prince. Scott himself says that he “couldn’t have written” the song without having read Mark Helprin’s novel Winter’s Tale, but goes on to state that the song is not about Helprin. The official Waterboys website’s Frequently Asked Questions clarifies that Scott has said that the song’s subject is “a composite of many people”, including C. S. Lewis, but explicitly states that it is not about Prince. Musician Nikki Sudden, with whom Scott had collaborated before forming The Waterboys, has claimed that the song was written about himself.

楽曲のタイトルについては明らかにされていないが、”YAMABEN”や”Payo Payo Chin”は各メディアにて公表されている。
The early Waterboys sound became known as “The Big Music” after a song on their second album, A Pagan Place. This style was described by Scott as “a metaphor for seeing God’s signature in the world.”
Waterboys chronicler Ian Abrahams elaborated on this by defining “The Big Music” as, “…a mystical celebration of paganism. It’s extolling the basic and primitive divinity that exists in everything (‘the oceans and the sand’), religious and spiritual all encompassing. Here is something that can’t be owned or built upon, something that has its existence in the concept of Mother Earth and has an ancestral approach to religion. And it takes in and embraces the feminine side of divinity, pluralistic in its acceptance of the wider pantheon of paganism.”
“The Big Music” either influenced or was used to describe a number of other bands specializing in an anthemic sound, including U2, Simple Minds, In Tua Nua, Big Country and Hothouse Flowers.
In the late 1980s, the band became significantly more folk influenced. The Waterboys eventually returned to rock and roll, and have released both rock and folk albums since reforming.

Scott currently lives in Dublin, Ireland.
