見た目が爽やかで、風の様に疾走し、スポーツマンらしいワイルドさと、自分のスタイルを持ったオシャレな人という場合、パンクやHIPHOP好きが多い。現にそれ系、出身の人もいる(アメリカの話)。

だからLyraが大好きでたまらない選手が、「お気に入りのミュージシャンは？」とインタビューされた時に、彼の名前をあげたから、のけぞってしまったのを覚えている。

そのアーティストが、このElliotte Smithだ。Elliotte Smith…アメリカを代表するシンガーソングライター。繊細さと強靭さを併せ持ったアーティスト。

それなのに、イマイチメジャーになれないのは、これまた地味だからか？

何だか最近、Lyraったら、アメリカやイギリス本国だと大人気なのに、日本では人気ない、というアーティストをやたら取り上げてしまってる。

「地味だけど良いバンドがあるんだよ」と紹介したい気持ちもあるけれど、どちらかというと、「今の気持ちにハマるから」と言うのが理由。ただ聴いていて心地よいからと言うだけで選んでいたら、日本じゃ人気がない人達に(笑)…。

でも素敵でしょ？

ああ、このElliott Smithの場合は、素敵だけじゃ済まされないんだった。

あまり宜しくない感情を彼は歌うからだ。聴いていて心地よいサウンドに騙されてはイケナイ。

Elliottの歌声は優しい。

雨の日の午後に、ゆったりと聴きながらコーヒーでも飲みたくなってしまう、王道なフォーキーな曲が多いEliott。だが歌詞は、サウンドと真逆な辛辣で、手厳しいものから、暗い湖の底から抽出はしたようなドス黒くも美しい歌詞だ。

この【Pitseleh】もそうだ。ギタリストとしても良い腕を持ったElliott。

淡々と人間関係の難しさや、宗教的観念を書いた歌詞を、優しい爪弾くギターの音色で浄化してるかのよう。

人はどんなに愛し合っていても、相手の全部を100%なんて理解できない。そんな後ろ向きな考えを推し進めていけば、Elliotteの苦しみに向き合える。真正面から。

Elliott Smithについて

本国アメリカで有名なフォークパンクシンガーソングライターの Elliott Smith は、映画『Goodwill Hunting』からアカデミー賞にノミネートされた曲【Miss Misary】の力で、1997年にインディーズからメインストリームの成功へとステージが上がった。

オレゴン州ポートランドで育った Elliottは、14歳で最初の作曲とレコーディングを開始。後に街の繁栄する音楽シーンの定番となる。

バンドHeatmiserのメンバーとして、1993年にLP『Dead Air』でデビューし、1年後に小さなCavitySearch レーベルで彼の最初のソロ活動『RomanCandle』をリリースした。

1995年のセルフタイトルアルバムで、有名なキルロックスターズのレーベルと契約。1997年に、映画製作者であり長年のファンであった Gas Van Sant が次作の『Goodwill Hunting』で音楽を使用する許可を要求した経緯と同時進行し、サウンドトラックの新曲をいくつか作曲もしたのだった。

アルバム『xo』

『XO』は、1997年から1998年にかけて録音され、1998年8月25日にレコードレーベルDreamWorksによってリリースされた。メジャーレコードレーベルでのElliotte Smith の最初のソロアルバム。『Waltz＃2（XO）』と『BabyBritain』の2枚のシングルがリリースされている。

この曲は、片想いの歌だ。ただ多くの人がこの曲の狙いを見逃していると思われる。

実は彼は、この女の子に恋をしていなかった。彼女は彼に恋をしていた。だが彼は、彼を愛そうとする彼女の闘いを愛していたかもしれないのだ。

今、彼は、彼女に自分を解放して欲しがっている。彼は彼女がどこに行ったのか気にしないのは、彼が(彼女が自分に対してしてるように)彼女に夢中になっておらず、互いに傷つけているため、悪循環な相互作用を避けているのだろう。それは、彼女がどこにいて、誰と一緒にいるのか、全く気にしない理由を彼に尋ねた反応から分かる。

Lyraのより詳しい解説

1行目の歌詞、これは、誰かに会いたいという意味だが、会わない方がいいと考えている、アンビバレンスな感情だ。その為、自分がどこにいるかを知ることが出来ない主人公。

その後は、「あなたに伝えたい」というイディオムの遊び。 愛のために死ぬことは、あなたが何かをしたいと信じられないほど熱心であると言う誇張された言い回し。

そして、話したいことがある、の意味は、Elliottが私たちに話すのを待ちきれない「冗談」を持っていると私たちに言っているのだ。そのジョーク（次の2行で定式化）は自殺に関するものであるため、この行の「死ぬ」という二重の意味があり複雑な状況を示唆している。

「ジョーク」。この冗談は、まったく冗談ではない。

代わりに、Elliott はショットガンを介して自殺を参照している（ここのバレルは直接の意味だ）。 このように自傷した銃創は、雷鳴を鳴らす。そして、その結果はひどい沈黙をもたらすのだ。

自己憐憫と創作活動の狭間で、苦しんでいたのか？はたまた人間関係に恵まれていなかったようでもあるし、信じられない気持ちをただ吐き出したかったのかも。

繊細すぎるElliott Smith。

そんな彼をお気に入りアーティストに選んだあの人も、同じ様な暗闇に気に入られていたのかな？と思うと、また気持ちが揺さぶられる。

穏やかな時と空気を纏う、スカルなあの人に。

I think many on here miss the point of this song. He wasn’t in love with this girl. She was in love with him. He might have loved her struggle to love him but now he wanted her to release him.

He doesn’t care where she’s been to me is about him not being as into her as she is and possibly avoiding their interactions as each takes them one step closer to him breaking her heart. It’s a reaction to the recent times she’s asked him why he doesn’t care where she’s been and who she’s been with. Classic girlfriend “prove you like me” behavior.

The answer to her question is this song. The irony of women is that she’d probably fall for him and see more hope if she read these lyrics.

The fact is that “no one deserves this”. “This” is what he’s gonna have to do to her. He’s been avoiding it.

Also, I think too many people miss that most of his lyrics often mean many things at the same time. I think there are themes in this song that aren’t just about his “little one” and their relationship. It also touches on his own desires to end himself (possibly a loosely connected commentary on the fact that she’s not filling him or curing him or helping him) and his view of evil winning out in all things “before you do as the devil pleases”.

She’s a spent of time that’s needing to end cause he’ll just sit in misery forever but she needs to move on because she wants more than that.

That’s my take. But as always. I’m late to the party.

Last note: The song itself is haunting and beatiful in a way that only his music can be.  

This could mean that he wants to see someone but he thinks it’s best if he doesn’t, so he’s not allowing himself to know where they are. If he knows where they are he knows he will be unable to resist temptation and will go see them.

This is the “joke” referenced in the previous line. The joke is no joke at all. Instead Elliott references suicide via shotgun (the barrel here is referenced directly).

A self inflicted gun shot wound in this way would make a thunderous sound. But it’s result would result in a terrible silence.

There is a play off of the word quiet here as well. Quiet comes after the gunshot. But also “quiet” refers to Elliott’s quietly kept this secret. The secret that he wants to die.

This song was written four years after Kurt Cobain’s death. There is not evidence that this is an inference to the Nirvana lead singer. But the popularity of Cobain’s death by shotgun resonates in these lines.

Elliotte Smith

The celebrated folk-punk singer/songwriter Elliott Smith rose from indie obscurity to mainstream success in 1997 on the strength of “Miss Misery,” his Academy Award-nominated song from the film Good Will Hunting. A native of Portland, OR, Smith began writing and recording his first songs at age 14, later becoming a fixture of the city’s thriving music scene. As a member of the band Heatmiser, he debuted in 1993 with the LP Dead Air, issuing his first solo effort Roman Candle on the tiny Cavity Search label a year later. For his 1995 self-titled album, Smith signed with the noted Kill Rock Stars label. Either/Or followed in 1997, around the same time that filmmaker and longtime fan Gus Van Sant requested permission to use the singer’s music in his upcoming Good Will Hunting.

Smith also composed a handful of new songs for the soundtrack, among them “Miss Misery,” and when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its Oscar nominations the following February, the track was a surprise entry in the Best Original Song category. Although he did not win, Smith performed the song live at the televised Oscar broadcast, appearing on-stage alongside superstars Trisha Yearwood and Celine Dion in one of the most notably surreal musical moments in recent memory. Smith’s DreamWorks label debut, XO, followed later in 1998. Two years later he delivered Figure 8, which delved further into lush arrangements and orchestrations. For the next two years, Smith labored over what was to be his next album, From a Basement on a Hill. He would not live to see the album’s completion, however.

To the shock of friends and fans alike, Smith’s body was found on October 21, 2003, with two stab wounds in his chest. To date, the coroner has been unable to determine the cause of death, and the Los Angeles Police Department’s investigation remains open. From a Basement on a Hill was released one year later, just two days shy of the first anniversary of his death, and received warm critical nods. In 2007, the Kill Rock Stars label issued a two-disc set of Smith’s unreleased work, all of which had been recorded between 1994 and 1997. Entitled New Moon, the 24-track collection contained three songs that had been previously released on hard to find compilations or soundtracks, including an early version of “Miss Misery” and a cover of Big Star’s “Thirteen.”

Likely a reference to the biblical story of Job, in which God allows Satan to test his most loyal follower, in order to see whether his faith will remain intact through the adversity.

Job 1:8-12 :

And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” 9 Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? 10 Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.” 12 And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.”

The devil is probably a metaphor in this line, in Elliott’s case, it is likely this devil is his depression. The devil (his depression) wants him to give things that make him happy up. He knows its self destructive behavior but he can’t stop it, so all he can do is hope no one else has to go through the same thing as him.

Because Elliott is not half what he wishes he was, he is angry at himself. He is so dis-satisfied with who he is and he is upset because he is worried he will never be happy with himself or let himself be happy.

This line implies that the person he is writing this song to is also damaged. They are so used to being used and abused, that when someone comes along that actually cares for them, they don’t know how to react, oftentimes pushing the other person away. This, coupled with the next line, is devastating

In 2010, Spin magazine placed XO at number 90 on its list of the 125 best albums in the magazine’s lifetime. Pitchfork Media placed the album at number 68 in their list of the greatest albums of the 1990s.

Matthew LeMay has written a book about XO as part of the 33⅓ series of books on albums, released on April 6, 2009, by the Continuum International Publishing Group.

RJD2 sampled “I Didn’t Understand” on the song “Ghostwriter” on his album Deadringer. Indie rock band Grandaddy performed “Oh Well, Okay” live in 2012 as a tribute to Smith.
