随分前に Machine Gun Kellyとコラボをして大ヒットしたGlaiveのシングル【More Than Life】を和訳＆解説しましたが、今回はソロ・アーティストとしてGlaiveを紹介します。何故なら新曲を2023年6月30日にリリースしたから！

これがすっごくいい感じに青春してる。

Manic Street Preachers を彷彿させる疾走感溢れたメロディが耳に残り、つい歌ってしまう。きっとPop Punk好きならば気に入ると思ったので、今日は皆さんにシェアしますね。

Ash Blue Gutierrez (born January 20, 2005), known professionally as Glaive (stylized as glaive), is an American singer-songwriter and record producer. After posting a string of hyperpop songs to SoundCloud during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic that earned him a cult following, he signed a record deal with Interscope Records and released his debut extended play, Cypress Grove, in 2020. His second EP, All Dogs Go to Heaven, and his collaborative EP with Ericdoa, Then I’ll Be Happy, were released in 2021. The deluxe version of All Dogs Go to Heaven, entitled Old Dog, New Tricks, was released in early 2022. Then followed by his singles ”Minnesota Is a Place That Exists” and ”Three Wheels and It Still Drives!” later that year. His debut album, I Care So Much That I Don’t Care at All, is set to release on July 14, 2023.

どうにもならない男子の気持ち

好きだから別れられないという両者の気持ち。それがお互いの話ならば良いのだが、それぞれ対象が違うから厄介な話。

浮気の歌なのだが、歌詞の主人公の子も好きで、彼氏も好きと言うなら気持ちがわかるのだが、この歌詞からすると主人公には愛情はなくて、やれたら良いというだけだから、どう考えても女子が悪いでしょうね。

主人公の男子側から考えたら好きなのに手に入らないから刹那い。好きな子は、彼氏がまだ好きで別れる気はなく、自分とはアレが良いから好きって何とも遊ばれている感が半端ない。

でも主人公はこの子が好きなんですよねー可哀想だわ。

そんな片思いをPopでドライブしたサウンドに乗せたのは正解。glaiveらしい青春ソングの完成だ！

videoは、エイドリアン・ヴィラゴメス監督によるもの。7月14日にInterscope Recordsからリリースされるデビュー・アルバム『i care so much that i dont care at all』からの先行シングルと合わせて公開されている。

glaiveについて

Ash Gutierrez アッシュ・ブルー・グティエレス（2005年1月20日生まれ）は、glaive グレイブ（様式化されている)として知られ、アメリカのシンガーソングライター兼レコードプロデューサー。

2005年1月20日にフロリダ州で生まれた。父親はプロのポロ選手で、家族はノースカロライナ州ヘンダーソンビルに移るまで9年間サラソタ近郊に住んでいた。 2023年現在、グレイブは高校に通っていない。彼の最後のレッスンは、彼にとって最初で唯一のホームスクーリングのレッスンだ。ソロとしてのキャリアを追求する前は、バンド活動も少ししていた。

新型コロナウイルス感染症（COVID-19）のパンデミックの初期に、一連のハイパーポップソングをSoundCloudに投稿。それがカルト的な支持を得る。この成功の後、インタースコープ・レコードとレコード契約を結び、2020年にデビュー作となる『Cypress Grove』をリリース。

彼の2枚目のEP 『All Dogs Go to Heaven』とエリクドアとのコラボEP『Then I’ll Be Happy』が2021年にリリース。『All Dogs Go to Heaven』のデラックス・バージョン『Old Dog, New Tricks』が2022年初頭にリリースされた。

その後、同年後半にシングル【Minnesota Is a Place That Exists】と【Three Wheel and It Still Drives!】を発表。彼のデビューアルバム『I Care So Much That I Don’t Care at All』は、2023年7月14日にリリースされる予定。

【the car】について 

アルバムはこれから7月にリリースするが、少し前の2023年4月27日のInstagramのライブストリーム中に、glaive はバイセクシャルであることをカミングアウトした。

これは、自分のアイデンティティと折り合いをつけることについての歌詞を含むシングル【As If】のリリース直前に行われた。人によっては客寄せ、と言うものもいるかもしれない。だが、個人的にはglaiveは嘘をついていないと思う。ただ嘘をつきたくない為に真実を言うことで、歌詞を真摯に書いたと知らせたかったのではないか?と感じる。

もしくは今の等身大の自分を歌詞に投影させた、と言いたのかもしれない、悩んだり、ふりをすることから解放されるために、自由になるためにかもしれない。

glaive の音楽はハイパーポップであるとよく言われる。彼は自身の音楽を「ハイパーなものは何もない」「ストレートなポップソング」と表現し、自分の音楽がハイパーポップと分類されているのは、ハイパーポップを作る他の人々と自分が関わっている結果であると拘りがあるようだ。

また、DIY倫理を持つトラップとエモラップの要素を使用しているのも特徴。

よりアンダーグラウンドで主に10代のハイパーポップの亜流であるデジコアジャンルの先駆者とみなされている。

彼の音楽には、中西部のエモ、エモ、グリッチ、ポップ パンク、ヒップホップ、トラップ、EDM、インディー ロックの要素が含まれている。

彼は自分の音楽を「イライラしたり怒ったりすること」をテーマにしたものであると言っている。そして、ヒップホップの作品からインスピレーションを得ているということも言っているので、こちらの場合はTravis Barkerや Machine Gun Kellyからの影響かと思われる。それに最近のアメリカやイギリスのティーンはヒップホップしか聞かない子が多いので、今時の青年らしい特徴なだけかもしれない。

ザ・フェーダーのコリン・ジョイスはグレイブの曲を「ジャンルを飛び越える」曲だと評していたが、本当にglaiveも様々なジャンルの要素があるアーティストだ。その多様性と今どきのティーンらしさを出した歌詞が、glaiveの魅力なのだ。

歌詞について

疎外感

彼の歌詞は疎外感やメンタルヘルスなどのテーマを扱っている。今回の【the car】の場合は、叶わぬ恋と疎外感がテーマだ。

ヴァルチャーのジャスティン・カートはグレイブの歌詞を「痛ましいほど正直」と評するように己に正直に歌詞を書いているのがわかる。

今さっき浮気してる女子と会って来て、帰りたくないのに彼女が友人の男子と別れてくれないからイライラして帰って来てグチッてるみたいだ。

glaiveではなく友人がモデル。【the car】は、glaive の友人とその友人のガールフレンドの間の浮気状況について、glaive の想像上の解釈を合わせた半分リアルな話だ。

この男女関係に関わる全員が、複雑な感情を経験する中、少女は新しい少年(歌詞の主人公)と付き合うときに、彼女が本当に誰が欲しいのかは、はっきりしていない。わざと書いていないのだろう。

コーラスの部分は、少女の言葉を反映している。その詩は少年とglaive の友人がどのように感じているかを説明するためにあり、犯罪のパートナーであることに対して彼がより罪悪感を感じるようになる。

この曲は、glaive の友人についての架空の物語であるにもかかわらず、一人称視点で作られている。

数か月後に非公式ソースから 15 秒のクリップが公開されたときに初めてプレビューされ、6 月下旬に glaive の TikTok で初めて公式にプレビューされた。その後、トラックリストへの掲載は Apple Musicを通じて公開され、その曲のリリース日はドロップされる 1 週間前にソースコードで発見され、アルバムからの最後のシングルになると公表された。

「【the car】は、僕の自分の視点ではなく、だまされた友人の視点で書いた唯一の曲でした。アルバム用にあまりにも多くの曲を作ったので、個人的な感情を表現することがなくなってしまい、状況を完全に把握しないまま、これを書きましたが、それをどのように想像し、解釈するかがわかりました。 — ブロードウェイワールド」

このインタビューだと「曲を書きすぎてネタ切れになったから、友人の恋愛事情を書いた」とはっきり言っているので、glaiveは誰かの彼女の浮気相手ではないと言っていることになる。

リアルだし、実体験を書くことが多いglaiveだからてっきり…だと思ったわ。

とにかく歌詞が現在進行形だから余計にリアルだな、と思った。特に怒りを伴った相手へのメッセージ。

自分とヤッてるのに、最中？にかかって来て出れなかった彼氏に電話すると聞いたら、誰でも「はあ？今目の前にいる俺は、お前にとって何なんだよ？」となるに違いない。

そしてサビの、「俺、帰るわ」と言うところ。shouldがつく言い回しは、「やりたくないのに、やるしかないだろうな」と言っておいて「実際にはやらない」と言う状況の時に使う。

つまり「俺、もう帰るわ」と言って帰らない、もしくは「帰りたくないけど帰ろう」と言う悲しい恋する男子の強がりを表しているのです。

可哀想なglaiveは、(実際は友人は)これからどうするのか？

好きな女の子といたいから主人公は、セフレのまま我慢するか?

それとも別れるべきと、きっぱりと関係を断つか？

どちらにしろ、誰かに恋してる人達は、この曲を聴いて自分の立場を重ね合わせるだろう。

During an Instagram livestream on April 27, 2023, Glaive came out as bisexual. This came directly before the release of his single “As If”, which contains lyrics about coming to terms with his identity.

the car” shares glaive’s imaginary take on a cheating situation between a friend of his and the boy’s girlfriend. As everyone involved goes through mixed emotions, the girl makes it unclear who she wants as she gets together with a new boy. As the chorus reflects on the girl’s words, the verses are used to describe how the boy and glaive’s friend feel, making him feel more guilty for being the partner in crime. As the story goes on, the cheater’s assistant is set back into reality, where the girl was never his as he looks back on his father’s words.

The song was first teased through a tweet by glaive on December 14, 2022, with a draft of the lyrics, which he then quoted the next day claiming that he changed the lyrics “to be more real to his life,”twisting the song into a first-person perspective, despite it being a fictional story about a friend. The song was first previewed months later when a 15 second clip would surface from an unofficial source, and was first officially previewed on glaive’s TikTok in late June. The song’s runtime and place on the tracklist would then be made public through Apple Music, where the song’s release date was found in the source code a week prior to the drop. Two days prior to its release, glaive confirmed on his Instagram story that “the car” would be the final single off the album.

“the car” was one of the only songs I didn’t write from my perspective but rather from the perspective of a friend who was cheated on. I had made so many songs for the album that I was running out of personal emotions to express, and I wrote this without full context of the situation but how I would imagine and interpret it.

Now We’re fucking in the car

glaive addresses a situation where a boy was being used by a girl to cheat on her boyfriend, who admittedly turned out to be a friend of Ash. First tweeting the lyric on December 14, 2022, where it was from the perspective of the cheated boyfriend, glaive quoted it the next day saying he “changed this lyric to be more real to” his life, flipping it into the first person. Despite the first person perspective throughout the song, the song was confirmed after its release to be fictional and about a friend.
