今日Lyraが和訳＆紹介するのは、アイルランド、ウィックロー州ブレイ出身のシンガーソングライターでありギタリストの アンドリュー Andrew Hozier – Byrne アンドリュー ・ホージア＝バーン（1990年3月17日 – ）
Hozier ホージア のステージ名の方がメジャーだろう。

音楽家の家庭に生まれ育ち、1592年にイングランド女王エリザベス１世が創設したダブリンのトリニティカレッジに入学して音楽を学んだ (中退)。
今日Lyraが和訳に選んだ曲【Take Me To Church】で2013年にデビュー。
この曲で、ヒットチャートを駆け上り、 数々の賞をアイルランドは勿論のこと、アメリカ、ヨーロッパなどで受賞する事になる。
日本の皆さんにはあまり馴染みがないであろう、Lyraが好きなダンサーが彼の曲で踊っていたので、久しぶりにHozierを聴いたら、改めて胸にグッと刺さって来る。
「えー！彼って、こんなに良かったっけ？」と再確認してしまった。

Lyraが大好きなダンサーが振り付けし踊っているVersionです。

声の張りが良いのだろう。
少し野太い感じが、神への懇願のメッセージを激しくも柔らかなイメージに持って行ってくれてるみたい。
歌詞は、命がけの献身的なラブソングだ。
「彼女を崇拝し、本気で愛している」事を神に独白しながら、自分の恋愛と、神への愛を連動しながら身を捧げる覚悟でいると叫ぶ愛の歌だ。
ただ、Lyraには愛する女の歌としてだけでなく、愛する国の歌にも聴こえてしまった。
勿論、愛する神への誓いの歌でもある。
愛する国、生まれ育った国、、、アイルランドへの希望と自由のために身を捧げる、と言う意味にもLyraには聴こえてしまって胸が痛くなる。
自由のために戦うことは正しいこと。だが、その為に人を殺めたりして良いのだろうか？
正義とは何？
頭に巡るアイルランド紛争の歴史がチラついてしまい、ただのラブソングには聴こえないの。

Hozierは、トリニティ・カレッジ在学中、トリニティ・オーケストラに所属 したり、アイルランドの作曲家マイケル・マクグリンが創設した合唱団アヌーナに2008年から2012年にかけて所属していたなど才能に恵まれた実力派シンガーであるのが伺える。
が、何故か中退してしまう。
そして、ユニバーサルや大きなレコード会社へデモを送り始める。
その間、トニリニティオーケストラに所属していて、ソリストを務めるようになり、その時のコンサートはレコードになり2012年には、ノルウェーに遠征もした。
そして、チャンスを掴み、デビューシングルである今日和訳した、【Take Me to Church】を2013年にリリース、
10月に本国アイルランドのシングルチャートで2位に達し、アイルランドのiTunesで1位を獲得、
翌 2014年、全米のシングルチャートで最高第2位を獲得、米国、カナダ、デンマーク等でプラチナディスク認定。
2014年9月19日にデビューアルバム『Hozier』をリリースし、母国アイルランドで1位、米国で2位、英国では5位をそれぞれ獲得した。
自力でのし上がる力が半端ない。
元々は、ミュージシャンのお父さんに育てられたから、名門の学校を早くやめてメジャーになりたかったのかな？なんて思うが、やはりあのエリザベス女王のスクールで、おまけに直属の合唱団でソリストしてたんなら、卒業してからで良いのに、勿体ないね。
でも、もしかしたら、今の彼は、インディーロックやソウル、ブルーズロックぽいのも歌ってるから、エモーショナルな歌が歌いたくて我慢出来ずにやめたのかもね、それならばわかる。
Lyraも感情的に動いてしまうから全く同じだから、居ても立ってもいられん、、、がわかる。
歌詞も正に「居ても立ってもられん」だからね。
人の熱情は止まらない。
止まらない感情は、人を動かすからね。
だから、この【Take Me To Church】は、国を超えて世界中の人々に受け入れ、時が経っても愛されているのだろう。

IRAとかの過激思想に対するHozierの考えも表現されてるか？は、曖昧だけど、愛する国の為に助力する、という気持ちはあるとLyraは思ってる。
だってそうでなければ、爆弾を抱えたゲイカップルがミュージックビデオの主人公になるわけないじゃない？
歌詞では、「僕の彼女は、温かみがある面白い人」とか、
「彼女の為にこの身を捧げるから」とか、恋人を普通に「彼女」と読んでいるのに、ビデオだとゲイカップルと、敵対するギャングだけで女性が一人も出てこないのがLyraは気になったのよ。
あえてそうしてるよね？
だから、国を言ってると思ったの。
「Hozierがゲイかも」てのも一瞬、頭をよぎったけど、数年前にTaylor Swift テイラー・スウィフトと付き合ってるのか？2人でいるのがバレた時に噂になってたから女の方が好きだと思います、、、て真相はバイだったりするかもしれないし分からないね。
ファンの人はどう思ってるのかな？
新しいEPが今年2018年にリリースされるから、近々、アルバムリリースが予想されるHozier。
この【Take Me To Church】が名曲過ぎて、次のヒットを期待されて、プレッシャーがかかって大変だろう。
でも、甘い歌声と熱い歌詞があれば次々と出して行くべきだ。
才能は、出し惜しみする必要ないもの。
彼の熱いハートを歌詞に綴って行って欲しい。
アイルランドと言うお国柄、宗教色は強くなるかもしれないけれど、禁欲的な苦しみがプラスされて、Lyraは好き。
不謹慎だが、Sexyさがよりプラスされる気がするからね。
このまま、真剣なHozierらしさを貫いて行って欲しい。
早く新しいアルバムがリリースされるのを期待しよう！

因みに、Lyraが好きだって言ったバレエダンサーは、ウクライナ出身のSergei Poluninです。
Sergeiもハンパない、のし上がる男です。
野心家。それも物凄い野心家。
だが、かなりの変わり者です。
それも手に負えないOutsider アウトサイダーだね。
Hozierの曲をバックにプロモーションビデオを撮ったのは、David LaChapelleがディレクトしたもの。
一見地味だけど、跳躍は高いし、技術はハンパないのが分かるビデオです。
ただ何で、超ヤバいSergeiが、ホワイトなNatural Taste ナチュラルテイストなスタジオで踊ってんのか？が、このビデオの狙いが分からない(笑)。
やっぱアレ？
「バレエ好きは、普通な女性が多いから」と思ってんじゃないの？
やめてよー、変わりもんだっているわよ、、、えっ、私？

Career
Beginnings
Hozier, the son of a local blues musician, was born in Bray, Ireland. He was raised in the minority Protestant Quaker faith, and attended Delgany National School and St. Gerard’s School before he began studying music at Trinity College, Dublin, but dropped out midway through his first year to record demos for Universal Music. While at Trinity, he became involved with the Trinity Orchestra. He was a member of the choral ensemble Anúna from 2009 to 2012, and appears as a soloist on their 2012 release Illumination singing “La Chanson de Mardi Gras”. He toured and sang with the group internationally including performances in Norway and the Netherlands.
2013–2016: Hozier
In 2013, Hozier released the EP Take Me to Church (also containing “Like Real People Do”, “Angel of Small Death & the Codeine Scene” and a live version of “Cherry Wine”), with the title track becoming his breakthrough single after it went viral on YouTube. It reached number one on iTunes on 25 October 2013. Hozier followed up Take Me to Church with the new EP From Eden (also containing “Work Song”, “Arsonist’s Lullabye” and a live version of “To Be Alone”), and a number of festival tour dates and television appearances in the United States. Hozier released his self-titled album, Hozier on 19 September 2014. It featured five singles, including “Take Me to Church”, “Work Song”, and “From Eden”, which were hits on his earlier EPs. On 5 December 2014, it was announced that “Take Me to Church” was nominated at the 57th Annual Grammy Awardsfor Song of the Year in 2015.
He performed for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2014, Saturday Night Live, and Late Night with Seth Meyers.
He was nominated for a Grammy Award and he performed “Take Me to Church” with Annie Lennox at the 2015 Grammy Awards.
He then performed the single “Take Me to Church” at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards.
In June 2015, he sang the recessional hymn at the funeral of Olivia Burke, a 21-year-old Irish J-1 visa student who was killed along with five others when an apartment balcony collapsed in Berkeley, California. The same month, he also played the Glastonbury Festival.
On 12 November 2015, he won the VH1 Artist of the Year, based on fan votes. He also performed “Take Me to Church” and The Beatles’ “Blackbird” with singer Tori Kelly.
In 2016, he released the video for the song “Cherry Wine” to raise awareness of domestic violence. On 4 April 2016, he performed the song on the Late Late Show with James Corden.
In June 2016, he announced a new song “Better Love”. The song was part of the Legend of Tarzan soundtrack and was released with the official video.
2018: Nina Cried Power EP
On 6 September 2018, Hozier released the Nina Cried Power EP which features a collaboration with Mavis Staples on the title track. He has also said a second album is in the works.

As a freelance principal dancer, Polunin is guest artist at various theaters worldwide such as Royal Ballet, Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Bolshoi Theatre, Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre, La Scala Theatre, Teatro San Carlo and is currently permanent guest artist for the Bayerisches Staatsballet.
