随分前にハマっていたドラマが、また再放送している。日本では爆発的な人気にはならなかったが、好きな人は、どハマりしていると言う…Lyraが好きな流れです〜。この「知る人ぞ、知る」って感じがよろしい。余り日本で本国の様なバカ売れはしなくて良いのよ。

本国では人気大爆発し、一時期は、この酷い訛りがオモロイと、真似して盛り上がるって言うのが流行ったのよね…なつい話。

でも日本では好きな人が好き〜くらいが良い。日本のミーハーなあの感じが好きではないから。(ま、どうでも良いんだけどね)

今日取り上げる曲は、ドラマのシーズン１の第１話で流れる、『Peaky Blinders』の始まりの歌だ。彼らのサーガの始まり。

Lyraは、Nick Caveの演劇調のサウンドも歌詞もミュージックビデオも大好き💕 Nick達みたいに闇夜が似合うバンドって、そう中々いないし、彼らの場末のキャバレーでやってるお抱えバンドっぽさったら、もう、ヤバくて色っぽいったらありゃしない。

そんなヤバイ音を出す奴らが、イングランドのバーミンガムの超ヤバ犯罪組織ファミリーの長いドラマの初っ端を飾るなんて、最高すぎるの。

今のLyraの頭ん中ではまだ、最近見た【Squid Game イカゲーム】のラストシーンが残っているんだが(笑)、どちらのTVシリーズも「人間一度は、死にかけたくらいが丁度良いねっ」と、Lyraにそう言ってる気がしてくるわ。

前にこのブログに「一回死ねや」って言って来た人がいたけど、私、もう一回死にかけていますからね。残念ね〜、そういう人間ってもう2度と死なないんだわ。

“Red Right Hand” is a song by Australian rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. It was released as a single from their eighth studio album, Let Love In (1994), on 24 October 1994. A condensed version was included in the single, while the longer version was included with the album. The title comes from John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, in which it refers to the vengeful hand of God.

Peaky Blinders is a British period crime drama television series created by Steven Knight. Set in Birmingham, England, the series follows the exploits of the Shelby crime family in the direct aftermath of the First World War. The fictional family is loosely based on a real urban youth gang of the same name, who were active in the city from the 1890s to the early 20th century.

『Peaky Blinders』(ピーキーブラインダーズ)は、スティーブンナイトによって作成された英国時代の犯罪ドラマテレビシリーズ。

このブログで良く取り上げて来たので、ご存知の方もいらっしゃると思いますが、知らない方の為に、チラッと紹介しておきます。

イギリスのバーミンガムを舞台にしたこのシリーズは、第一次世界大戦直後のシェルビー犯罪家族の搾取を時系列で追っているドラマです。架空の家族は、1890年代から20世紀初頭にかけて市内で活動していた、同じ名前の本物の都会の若者のギャングに大まかに基づいている為、フィクションではあるものの、ほぼ時代劇として捉えて楽しめる内容だと思いますね。

このブログで取り上げて来たキリアン・マーフィーが主演で、1890年代から20世紀初頭にかけてバーミンガムに実在した19世紀の都市のギャンググループであるピーキー・ブラインダーズのリーダー役を演じている。

シーズン4まではBBC Two、シーズン5からはBBC Oneで放映されており、シーズン7までの製作が予定されており、イギリス以外では、現在ネットフリックスが全世界で独占配信している。

曲について

アルバムの冒頭の曲【SongofJoy】は、殺人者について次のように述べている。

「家で彼は「彼の赤い右手」と書いた。/それは『失楽園』からだと言われている。」

前述のParadiseLost（Book II、170-174）の外観は、

「再び断続的な復讐の腕/彼の赤い右手は私たちを悩ませますか？」この用語自体は、ホラティウスのオードI.2,2-3の「rubentedextera」という用語をMilton が翻訳したものだ。

共作者のMick Harvey は、この曲はバンドの1994年のアルバム『LetLoveIn』の作詞作曲プロセス中に生まれたことを思い出している。

歌詞は、「一見神の一部であり、悪魔の一部である」「影のある、魅力的で、操作的な人物であり、土地をストーカーし、どこへ行っても恐怖と畏怖の組み合わせを打つ」と説明している。

【Red Right Hand】は、未定義の脅威の役割も果たしている。それがサタンの手に関係するのか、それとも神ご自身の罰する手に関係するのか、学者の間で議論がある。

歌詞をバックアップするために、曲全体がオルガンのテーマと洞窟の深い不吉な声で脅迫的な魅力を持っている曲だと思う。

1節と2節では、「赤い右手を持つ」背の高いハンサムな見知らぬ人が、遍在する危険を擬人化するために使用されていると言えるだろう。

3節と4節では、この危険が実際に何であるかが明らかになっている。

自尊心より重要なことから、あなたの焦点を引き離すのは物質的な富の魅力（男は背が高くてハンサムである）だ。

深読みポイント

ここからは、深読み(深く掘り下げて意味を知りたい人)好きな人用に書いておきます。

BadSeedsの元ギタリスト兼、共同創設者であるMickHarveyは、この曲の作詞作曲をしている。かなり謙虚な始まり方をする曲だが、アルバムLet LoveInの曲を書いているときに取り組んでいたジャムから生まれたと言う。

 「[…]俺は、まだそれがすべて不思議だと思っている。詳細は知りたくないし、Nick には絶対に聞かない。 「一体何なのか」と考えたほうがよいと思ったり、知らないので、このまま不気味な方がいいと思ったりする。この曲には今、独自の生命があるんだ。」

間違いなく、そうだと思う。別の考えられる解釈としては、歌がアルスターの自発的な力と北アイルランドのトラブルの間の行動に関係している可能性がある。

UVFの準軍事組織は、自分たちを「赤い右手」と呼んでいたからだ。おそらく、聖書（敬虔なプロテスタントだったので）、ミルトンの詩、カトリック教徒や赤人に復讐を果たしていると考えていたから。

北アイルランドの旗に見られる右手で、そこに準軍組織の忠誠心を示しているのだ。このアイデアは、曲全体の暗い画像によってさらに強化される可能性があるだろう。

「背の高いハンサムな男」は、あなたの兄弟、あなたのお父さん、あなたの叔父、つまり誰でもある可能性があるのだ。誰がRedRight Handのメンバーで、誰がメンバーでないのかわからないということだ。

さらに、これを裏付けるのは「しかし彼のコートに隠されている/赤い右手である」という行だ。

 

 

UVFメンバーは彼らの活動と政治的連携、または結びつきを隠さなければならなかった。

それは確かに隠されていたが、常にそこにいること（原因への忠誠は死ぬまでだ）は、周知の事実、、、これにより、歌詞がより強くなるだろう。

The song has become one of Nick Cave’s signature songs, being performed at most of his concerts; only “The Mercy Seat” has appeared in more of his live sets since 1984. It has since become best known for its use in the first three films of the Scream trilogy and later as the theme song to the British crime drama series Peaky Blinders, which resulted in the song receiving a re-release single in 2014. It has been covered by Arctic Monkeys, PJ Harvey, Iggy Pop, Jarvis Cocker and Snoop Dogg, among others.

The liner notes for Murder Ballads state that the phrase “red right hand” is from a line in John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost that refers to divine vengeance. The opening song on the album, “Song of Joy,” states of a murderer: “It seems he has done many, many more, / quotes John Milton on the walls in the victim’s blood. / The police are investigating at tremendous cost. / In my house he wrote ‘his red right hand’. / That, I’m told, is from Paradise Lost.”

The aforementioned appearance in Paradise Lost(Book II, 170-174) is: “What if the breath that kindled those grim fires, / Awaked, should blow them into sevenfold rage, / And plunge us in the flames; or from above / Should intermitted vengeance arm again / His red right hand to plague us?”. The term itself appears to be Milton’s translation of the term “rubente dextera” in Horace’s Ode I.2,2-3

Co-writer Mick Harvey recalled that the song originated during the songwriting process for the band’s 1994 album Let Love In. The lyrics describe “a shadowy, alluring, and manipulative figure, stalking the land and striking a combination of fear and awe everywhere he goes” who is “seemingly part deity, part demon”.^[6] While writing the lyrics, Cave “filled an entire notebook” with descriptions of the town the song is set in, “including maps and sketches of prominent buildings, virtually none of which made it into the lyrics.” Cave later said that the town and landscape depicted in the song is a “reconstructed” version of Wangaratta, his hometown. Biographer Mark Mordue notes that it is “still somewhere real enough for those lyrics to serve as a map that could guide you from one point to another with an eerie familiarity.”

In 2004 researcher Kim Beissel claimed that “Red Right Hand” was loosely based on the 1987 Tom Waits song “Way Down in the Hole”.

The notion of a Red Right Hand goes back to John Milton’s Paradise Lost where it also plays the role of an undefined threat. There are discussions among scholars whether it concerns the hand of Satan or the punishing hand of God himself.

To back up the lyrics, the whole song has a threatening allure with the organ theme and Cave’s deep ominous voice.

In verses one and two, a tall handsome stranger ‘with a red right hand’ is used to personify an omnipresent danger. In verses three and four it is revealed what this danger actually is. It is the allure (remember that the man is tall and handsome) of material wealth which draws away your focus from more important things like self-respect. The tall handsome man sustains this danger as a ‘catastrophic plan’ in which you (that is the average person) are a ‘microscopic cog’. In this way, the man represents consumer society: something which is very everyday, but in its essence utterly scary and life-crushing.

The song was used as a theme song for the the horror movies Scream 1 & 2 and the soundtrack of 3 still contains tunes that are a reminiscence of this song. It’s also the theme song for the BBC show Peaky Blinders.

Bad Seeds’ former guitarist and co-founder Mick Harvey, who is also credited as co-writer of the song, said: 

It’s a song that has fairly humble beginnings. Much of it came from a jam we were working on when we writing songs for our album Let Love In. […] I still find it all mysterious. I don’t want to know the details, and I’d never ask Nick. Sometimes it’s better to think “what the hell’s that all about?” It’s better that it’s unknowable and spooky. The song has its own life, now.

Arguably, I would say yes it does. Another possible interpretation could be that the song is to do with the Ulster Voluntary Force and there actions during The Troubles in Northern Ireland. The paramilitary section of the UVF referred to themselves as the ‘Red Right Hand’, quite possibly deriving from the Bible (as they were devout Protestants), from Milton’s poem, as they saw themselves as carrying out revenge on the Catholics or from the Red Right Hand that can be seen on the Northern Irish Flag, to show there loyalist allegiances. This idea could be further reinforced by the dark imagery throughout the song, that may not be representative or Milton’s poem but could also be representative of the UVF. A “tall handsome man” coming to give or take away, someone who seems to have vast amounts of wealth, power and resources, is something the UVF had. The tall handsome man sustaining an omnipresent danger that is the “catastrophic plan” in which you (that is the average person) are a “microscopic cog”, can be adapted to fit the idea of the UVF and the IRA, with the danger of bombings and shootings always overarching everyone’s lives, with the “catastrophic plan” being the hidden aims of the UVF in there hidden war. The “tall handsome man” could be anyone, your brother, your dad, your uncle. It gives this sense that they do not know who is a member of the Red Right Hand and who isn’t. Moreover, backing this up is the line “But hidden in his coat / Is a red right hand” UVF members had to hide their activity’s and political alignments or ties, otherwise they could face prosecution or be murdered by the IRA, and this idea or it being hidden away or covered up, but always being there (as the loyalty to the cause is till death) is something this line gets across perfectly.
