今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、アメリカ合衆国コロラド州コロラドスプリングス出身の5人組のロックバンド One Republic ワンリパブリック   。

1996年に作詞作曲&ヴォーカルのRyan Tedder ライアン・テダーと ギターのZach Filkins ザック・フィルキンスがColorado Springs Christian High School で友達になったことが始まり。

2002年にコロラド州コロラドスプリンスでバンドを続けてきた結果、One Republicと名前を決めて再起動。

2009年第51回グラミー賞でノミネートされてからもヒットチャートを賑わせてくれるバンドの一つになっている。

今日Lyraが和訳するのは、One Republicの2013年3月リリースの3rdアルバム『Native』からのビッグヒット・シングルであり、UKで1位、USで2位を獲得するなど、2013年を代表するビッグヒット曲のひとつになった曲【Counting Stars】。

OneRepublic is an American pop rock band formed in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 2002. It consists of lead vocalist Ryan Tedder, guitarist Zach Filkins, guitarist Drew Brown, bassist and cellist Brent Kutzle, drummer Eddie Fisher and keyboardist Brian Willett. The band first achieved commercial success on Myspace as an unsigned act. In late 2002, after OneRepublic played shows throughout the Los Angeles area, a number of record labels approached the band with interest, but the band ultimately signed with Velvet Hammer, an imprint of Columbia Records. They made their first album with producer Greg Wells during the summer and fall of 2005 at his studio, Rocket Carousel, in Culver City, California. The album was originally scheduled for release on June 6, 2006, but the group was dropped by Columbia two months before the album ever came out. The lead single of that album, “Apologize”, was released on April 30, 2006, on Myspace and received some recognition there, becoming number one on the Myspace charts.

はあ、懐かしい、、、と言っても６年前。

2013年の夏にやたら、MTVやラジオやらあちこちでかかっていたから覚えている。

「どんだけ売れる？」って感じで、かなり上位に長い間ランクインしていたし、アメリカでは特に2013年を象徴すると言っても良いくらい人気を得ていた曲だ。

事実、このシングルが売れてから、彼らの出したシングル９曲の累計ダウンロード回数がアメリカ史上最高の430万回を記録しているのだから、どんだけ売れてるの〜♪と日本の皆さんは、ビックリするでしょう。

日本だと当時はヒットチャートで売れていたから話題にはなったと思うけど、今は知らない人の方が多いかな？、、、て気がする地味な人気。

でも、本当人気あるのよ、One Republic。

特にこの曲は、同業者であるミュージシャン達にカヴァーされている数が非常に多いのでも有名。

リップシンクで有名な某番組やTVやLiveでカヴァーされることが多いのが特徴で、多分、サビでオクターブ上がるじゃない？

あそこで客を盛り上げられるし、歌ってる自分も気持ち良いからアーティスト達がこぞってこの曲を選ぶのだと Lyraは思うよ。

皆に愛され、歌われる曲こそ素晴らしい曲だと思える。

勿論、数じゃなくてね、、、数多ければ金にはなるけど、それだけでは価値はないと思う。

たった1人でもいい。

感情移入出来たり、歌うことでパワーが出たり、時には現実を知るきっかけになったり、夢への道しるべになる曲、悲しみのどん底に陥る曲とかね、、、人間の内面に居続け、歌われる曲が素晴らしい曲なんだと思う。

ハイスクールで出会った2人がバンドを始めたのは、2人の音楽性が似ていたからみたい。

Fiona Apple, Peter Gabriel, U2 などが好きだったらしい2人はバンドを始めて、2002年に、結成したのが現在のバンドの原型になるRepublic。そして、名前をOne Republicにし、2003年に大手メジャーColumbia records と契約を結ぶが、3年後にやめてしまう。

そして、積極的に音楽活動を行い続けている時に、人気音楽プロデューサーの「Timbaland」に発掘され、Timbalandが経営する Interscope Records 傘下の「Mosley Music Group」と契約を結ぶ。

因みにTimbaland ティンバランド (本名:Timothy Zacherty Mosley ティモシー ・ザシェリー・モズレー (1971年3月10日 – ）は、アメリカ合衆国バージニア州ノーフォーク出身のヒップホップ・R&B系音楽プロデューサー、ラッパーである。

今や彼のレーベルは、革新的なアーティストや実力あるミュージシャンが揃うレーベルだとLyraは思っているし、ラップやヒップホップに限らずPopsやメタルまで良ければ契約するボーダレスなところが大好きだわ。 Lyra Love Interscope ❤️

One Republicは、2007年11月20日 1stアルバム「Dreaming Out Loud」をリリース。

2009年には第51回グラミー賞において、1stシングル【Apologize】が「Best Pop Performance」にノミネートされた。

2009年11月2ndアルバム『Waking Up』をリリース。

そして、2013年3月3rdアルバム『Native』をリリースし人気を決定づけたのだ。

今日Lyraが和訳した【Counting Stars】は、UKで1位、USで2位を獲得した2013年の大ヒット曲のひとつになったのは言うまでもない。

この曲で彼らは、2014年の各音楽賞を受賞しまくったの。

面白いのは受賞式のライブで、One Republicがステージでこの曲を披露したのだが、見ているアーティストや芸能人、観客がみんな一緒に口ずさんでいたと言う、、、アメリカ国内で(そして、イギリスでも) この曲が浸透をしているのがわかるね。

2014年Love Runs Outが世界中でチャートインするなど、この後もチャートを賑わしているOne Republicは、国民的なPop Rock Band の道を着実に歩んでいるのだろう。

【Counting Stars】が人気のある曲になったのは、ラブソングの形をした現実を見せるリアリティソングだからだとLyraは思う。

主人公の男がいちばんの理解者である彼女に、語りかけているの。

それは、世の中には偽善者や、逆に自分をわざと悪っぽく見せている者もいて、真実は曖昧だと言いたいのだ。

そして、そのもの達がいる世界は金で全てが回っていると言うこと。

現代社会には、汚い連中が汚い金をまわして成り立っている。

だから、イライラする、許せねー、て主人公は思っていて、だから俺たち2人だけは金勘定はしないで、夜空に広がる星たちを数えよう、、、つまり、2人だけは綺麗なままでいたい、と言っているのよ。

理想主義だな、とは思う。

そんな簡単に綺麗なものだけ見ては生きていけないもの。

だから、歌詞のラストでは、

「金を手に入れろ

燃え上がるのを見ろよ

その川に沈め

俺が学んだ教訓さ」てなるわけよ。

でも、理想として願っているのは、

「でもな、ベイビー、ずっとなんだ

ずっと絶えず祈っているんだ

なのよ。

でも、これを聞いていて、Lyraはコロンビアレコードという、デカイ会社と契約を交わしたのに、やめたOne Republicのことをチラッと思い出したのよ。

問題があるし、やりたくないことをやらされるからやめたんだろう。

金じゃ割り切れないことってあるでしょ？

その為に辞めて、自らの信じた道を貫こうと必死だったころのことを書いたのかな？って気がしたの、あくまでもLyraのいつもの深くほりさげ過ぎなんだけどね。

頑張り続け、悩み、金よりも自分たちのロックをやっていた時代の歌詞かな。

一応、サウンドは、Beyonceの売れていた曲を聴いたことがキッカケ。

RyanがBeyonceのヒップホップソングで、この曲のアイディアが浮かんだのだから笑ってしまうけれど、、、たしかにBeyonceって男をやり込める歌ばかりだけど中には金勘定しまくってる歌があるものね。

ブラックミュージシャン、マウンティング好きだから(笑)。

金勘定しまくりの汚い輩や、戦いまくってる濃い人間ばかり聴いて「ハアー」何て思ってる人達には、是非是非、この【Counting Stars】を聴いてほしいわ。

たまには、綺麗な星空を見てシットリしてみたら？

Counting Stars” is a song by American pop rock band OneRepublic from their third studio album, Native (2013). The song was written by lead singer Ryan Tedder, and produced by Tedder and Noel Zancanella. It was released as the album’s third single on June 14, 2013.

The song has been one of the band’s most successful singles, reaching number one in many countries including Canada and the United Kingdom, number two in the United States, and top ten in 20 countries. It has sold over 1 million copies in the United Kingdom.

The song’s accompanying music video, directed by James Lees, features the band performing in the ground floor of a building beneath an ongoing church congregation on the upper floor.  as of May 2019, the video has received over 2.7 billion views on YouTube and is the 13th most watched video of all time on the site.

Ryan Tedder stated that “‘Counting Stars’ came about [in August 2012] as an idea. It was probably the most versions of any song[…]to get it right”. He also called it “one of [his] two favorite songs on the [Native] album”. Tedder started writing “Counting Stars” while waiting for Beyoncé to turn up to a studio session, about a month after starting to write “Love Runs Out”. In an interview with the Official Charts Company, Tedder said, “I had the idea for Counting Stars originally in the summer of 2012 when I was in the Hamptons. I was working in the largest house I’ve ever stepped foot in, which was being rented by Jay-Z and Beyoncé. I was in the middle of working on my most recent album with OneRepublic, Native, and during that time I was determined not to work with any other artists. I broke the promise because I also did sessions that year with Beyoncé. When Jay-Z and Beyoncé invite you to stay with them in the Hamptons, you don’t say no!” He continued: “I was out there for about five days and on the second day I woke up early and I started combing through the internet, searching for stuff that would inspire me for Beyoncé. I ended up coming across this weird song that had this indigenous folk sound to it that just struck me like lightning. I didn’t like the verses or lyrics, but I loved the feel and movement of it. That ended up inspiring Counting Stars. I debated playing it for Beyoncé and putting it forward for her album, but it didn’t feel like a song Beyoncé would record. I immediately came up with the chorus idea, went home and for the next three months finished the Native album.”

“Counting Stars” is a folk pop and pop rock song with a disco beat. Ricardo Baca of The Denver Post said that the song is “an extremely effective (and infectious) song — with Tedder’s polished pop hijacking a folk song, and a little R&B attitude in there as well.” The band explained that the song is about “laying in bed awake at night when you’re stressed out of your mind, thinking ‘How are we gonna make ends meet? How are we gonna pay the bills?’ You know, all those things you wanna do with your life – how are we gonna make them work? How’s this actually gonna happen or come to pass? So, instead of counting sheep, we’re counting stars.”

OneRepublic’s varied style of music has been described by Ryan Tedder: “We’re no respecter of genre. If it’s a good song or a good artist whether rock, pop, indie or hip hop, they’ve probably influenced us on some level… nothing’s new under the sun, we’re a sum of a bunch of parts.” Specific acts whom OneRepublic have cited as influences include the Beatles, U2, M83, and Prince.
