と言うことで、今日は Richard Ashcroftの バンド　The Verveの曲を和訳しましょう。

LyraのブログではThe Verveはヘビロテのバンドの一つ。彼らのサウンドを聴いていると癒される。

どんなに疲れていても、聴いているとパワーを貰える。

全てのアルバムを通して、The Verveの変化を感じられるから面白い。

サイケデリックダダ漏れの爆音から、ブルーズに挨拶をし、ソウルに寄り道した後の、美しいオーケストラの音色や壮大な広がりを見せるポップな世界まで、彼らの時の移り変わりを音で感じられる。

でも正直好きなのは、初めの頃だ。垢抜けない長髪の男子四人組の彼らが、Dopeな音を出す。

波のように私に打ちつけてくるエネルギー。それを体で感じて今日も昇天するのだ。

今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、当時まだVerveとして活動していた The VerveのHut レーベルから1993年6月21日にリリースされたデビュー・アルバム『Storm In Heaven』【Blue】。

ブルー」はイギリスのロックバンド、ザ・ヴァーヴの曲で、ハット・レコードからリリースされたファーストアルバム「ア・ストーム・イン・ヘブン」のファーストシングルとしてリリースされた。この曲は英国のチャートで69番にピークを迎えた。

The Verveのアルバムはどれも完成度が高く、美しいサウンドに酔えるので大好きで全部持っている。凄く良いから全部おすすめする。

でも個人的には初期のドロ〜ンと底まで体が沈み込むような音が好き。

この【Blue】は彼らのデビューアルバムなだけに思いっきり音が初期のサイケデリックな曲ばかりで好きだ。

この音の渦に埋もれたい。

 

プロデュースは、John Leckie、作詞作曲はメンバー全員 Richard Ashcroft, Nick McCabe, Simon Jones & Peter Salisbury。

このドローン、ドヨーンと圧強めなギターは、Nick McCabeでないと出せないテイストだと思う。一時期何回も離脱もしたNickだが、彼がいないとThe Verveとしては物足りなくかんじてしまたうのだ。

ビデオは、ロンドンのイズリントンの暗い路地を下るバンドを執拗に追っかけてとっているが、これが最近Lyraが見ていたホラー映画そっくりで、余計に不気味に感じてしまった。

このデビュースタジオアルバムは、英国では27位。2013年にNMEは、史上最高の500アルバムのリストで473位にランクインさせている。もっと上位にランクインされても良いと思うが、相当前のアルバムなのにランクインされただけよいのかも？

1993年6月21日にHutレーベルからリリースされた、当時Verveとして知られていた英国のロックバンドTheVerveによるデビュースタジオアルバム。英国では27位でランクイン。

レコーディングは。コーンウォールのSawmills Studiosで1992年12月から1993年1月までの7週間にわたって録音され、ジョンレッキーがプロデューサー。

曲について

アルバムを構成する10曲のうち、レコーディング前にライブで演奏されたのは【Slide Away/The Verve】(ザ ・ヴァーヴの完成型 Don’t you feel alive?)、【Already There】、【The Sun、TheSea』の3曲だけ。

残りの7曲はスタジオジャムセッションから発せられたからか、ライブ感が アルバム全体を通して感じられる。

「[アルバム]はほとんど即興だった」とベーシストのSimon Jones サイモン・ジョーンズは回想し、バンドは以前のシングルをレコードに含めないという「大胆な」決定を下したと述べている。全曲新曲。素晴らしい。

Johnによると、バンドの作曲の練習では、「毎晩午前4時まで…彼らはかなり夜行性のバンドでした…彼らはあまり眠れませんでしたね。彼らはたくさんのドープを吸いました」とアララ〜の発言をしている。

「定期的に彼らが働いているのを見ていましたよ。バンドのギタリストであるNick McCave ニック・マケイブは、当時のスタジオレコーディングの一般的な正統性とは対照的に、「テープエコーとリバーブに関する」サウンドを好みました。」と、ドヨーンとした畝りの出所を暴露もしていた。

「彼(Nick) のバンドメイトのSimon Jones によると、Nickはギターをギターのように扱っていませんでした…彼はギターのヒーローになりたくありませんでした。彼はJimmy Page に興味がなかったんですよ。..それはすべてテクスチャーについてですけど」

バンドは、Cocteau Twins やCan からフリージャズに至るまで、音楽を作曲する際にさまざまな影響を取り入れました

最後から2番目のトラック【Butterfly】」は、Steely Dan のサンプルと一緒に演奏しながら午前3時に録音されたと伝えられている。

ドラマーのPeter Salisbury のパーカッションは、Dr. John の『Gris Gris 』アルバムからインスピレーションを得てお、Kick Hornes の「太陽、海」と「バタフライ」の金管楽器セクションはFunhouse の影響を受けています。

「ヴァージンが署名したバンド、ってのは、俺たちは早い段階で捨てたよ」とNickはいう。

「VirtualWorld」のバージョンが録音され、1つはフルートのYvetteLacey（以前は「GravityGrave」に貢献した）をフィーチャーし、もう1つはMcCabeのスライドギターをフィーチャーしている。

「AlreadyThere」は、Richard Ashcroft リチャード・アシュクロフトとNick が歌詞でコラボレーションしたThe Verve の唯一の曲であることで有名だが、レコーディング中、Richardはその場で歌詞を即興でプレイした。【Blue】はボーカルテイクは、バンドのレコードレーベルがアルバムのマスターテープを受け取る予定の日の午前6時にやっと完了だっだと言う。粘りに粘って納得いくまでやったと言うことだろう。

歌詞について

歌詞は、即興でやることが多かったとプロデューサーが言っているので、この曲もそうだった気がしますね。なぜなら、本国イングランドでも「意味がわからない」とか「難解」と言う人が多いから。

曖昧な歌詞だが、Lyraは偶然曖昧になっただけで実際は、ノリで思いついたまま歌詞が出来上がったから、わかりにくい歌詞になってしまった、と言う気がする。

意味がつながらないか等、難しいのかも。でもこれは意味は2パターンだろう。

一つは、スラングだが、blueが英語だと青章の意味がある。オックスフォードやケンブリッジ大学の選手を意味していて、あと英国保守党員の意味もある。

この曲の場合、全体から青章(選手)が適している為、大学の青章をつけてる選手の意味にしたわけです。

そして2つ目は、普通良く使われる憂鬱とかのブルー。こちらはサブ的な意味合いでしょう。

ドリーミーにも取れる歌詞。でも誰かに対して、ここでは青章をつけた人間、もしくはエリートの選手に、忠告している為、ラリってるだけの歌詞ではないのだ。

誰かに押しつぶされないようにしろ、利用されるな、と言っている。

この世界で生きていくための指針か？

勿論、弱い自分にも負けるな、と言う意味合いもある。

生きて行くのには辛いことばかりだが、汚い世界を見た分、強くなれるし、経験値があがる。そうなると自然と認識する知能も力も上がる。

生きづらい中での呼吸の仕方。それができるものが、この世を自分のものに出来る人間なのだ。

A Storm in Heaven is the debut studio album by the English rock band the Verve, at the time known just as Verve, released on 21 June 1993 on the Hut label. It charted at number twenty-seven in the UK. In 2013, NME ranked it at number 473 in its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All The Time.

The album was recorded at Sawmills Studios in Cornwall over a seven-week period between December 1992 and January 1993, with John Leckie in the producer’s chair, and took its title from Jay Stevens’ book Storming Heaven, which detailed the effects of LSD on the United States during the counterculture movement of the 1960s. Two decades after the album’s release Leckie admitted that he jumped at the chance to produce the band as they were “one of the only bands that I’ve ever begged to work with… I just couldn’t believe what I was witnessing.”

Of the ten songs that comprise the album, only three had been played live before recording – “Slide Away”, “Already There” and “The Sun, The Sea”. The remaining seven songs emanated from studio jam sessions. “[The album] was pretty much improvised,” bass player Simon Jones recalled, stating that the band took a “bold” decision not to include their earlier singles on the record. According to Leckie, the band’s compositional practices would regularly see them working until “four a.m. every night … they were quite a nocturnal band … they didn’t get much sleep. They smoked a lot of dope.” The band’s guitarist, Nick McCabe, favored a sound that “was about the tape echo and the reverb” in contrast to the prevailing orthodoxy of studio recording at the time, which he bemoaned as being “still stuck in the aesthetics of 80s recording techniques.” According to his bandmate Jones, McCabe “didn’t treat the guitar like a guitar… He didn’t want to be a guitar hero. He wasn’t into Jimmy Page… It was all about texture.”

The band incorporated a range of diverse influences while composing the music, ranging from Cocteau Twins and Can to free jazz. Penultimate track “Butterfly” was reportedly recorded at three a.m. while playing along with a Steely Dan sample. Drummer Peter Salisbury’s percussion drew inspiration from  Dr. John’s Gris-Gris album, while the brass section from the Kick Horns on “The Sun, The Sea” and “Butterfly” was influenced by Fun House. “The band that Virgin signed, we ditched early on”, McCabe said, “… early demos were like Rolling Stones power-pop tunes. They bore no relation to what ended up on A Storm in Heaven.” Two versions of “Virtual World” were recorded, one featuring Yvette Lacey on flute (who had previously contributed to “Gravity Grave”) and the other with slide guitar from McCabe. “Already There” is notable for being the only song by The Verve on which Richard Ashcroft and McCabe collaborated on the lyrics. While recording, Ashcroft would often improvise lyrics on the spot – the vocal take for “Blue” was only completed at six a.m. on the day that the band’s record label were scheduled to receive the album’s master tapes.
