今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、アメリカ合衆国オレゴン州ポートランドで結成されたロックバンド 、Everclear エヴァー・クリアー。

Vocal& GのArt Alexakisが中心となって1992年から現在まで、どストレートで、Grunge ぽいサウンドをプレイしているバンドである。

2003年までは３ピースバンドであったが、現在は、BassとDrumsがメンバーチェンジし、Guitarも加えて４人編成。

“Santa Monica (Watch The World Die)” is a rock song by the band Everclear, from their 1995 album Sparkle and Fade. The song was written by the band’s lead singer, Art Alexakis. Though it was not officially released as a single in the United States, American radio stations played “Santa Monica” enough for it to reach number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart in 1996. The song spent three weeks atop the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, reached number five on the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart, and peaked at number 35 on the Top 40 Mainstream chart. It also became a top-forty hit in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom; it is the band’s highest-charting single in Australia.

Sparkle and Fade is the second album by Everclear, released on May 23, 1995. It was their first album to be released exclusively on Capitol Records; their previous effort, World of Noise, was re-released on Capitol after its introduction through the Portland, Oregon based label, Tim/Kerr Records. The album produced the singles “Heroin Girl,” “Santa Monica,” “Heartspark Dollarsign” and “You Make Me Feel Like a Whore”. Ostensibly, the album’s music follows themes like addiction and romance through a loosely defined narrative similar to Art Alexakis’ own troubled life when he was in his twenties.

中には不謹慎だと感じる人もいるらしい。

Vocalの Art Alexakisは、ロスアンジェルスのスラム街で育った。

幼い頃から、両親と極貧生活をスラム街で過ごすとなると、ついてくるオマケは、悪癖くらいだろう。

若いうちからドラッグ中毒になり、Teenagerで、オーバードーズを経験したのだから、よく助かったと思う。

ジャンキー生活から足を洗い、リハビリを終えたArtは、80’s 後半にバンドを始める。

ロスでShakin’Bravesとして活動し、Cow Punkブームの波に乗った。

時流に従い、Cow Punk シーンで有名なShinding Recordsからソロ・レコードをだした。(Colorfinger名義でもリリース。)

そして1992年に彼女が妊娠したのを機に、故郷のポートランドに帰り新生活を始め、バンドも心機一転、新しくEverclearを結成した。

名前はアメリカでは有名な穀物アルコールのEverclearから取った。

Art曰く「純粋な、白い悪魔」だから。

Everclearには、何故か悲しみの黒い影が付き纏うのは、このせいか？

後ろ向き。

もしくは、逃れられない過去が、ずっと彼らの片足を捕まえて引っ張っているように感じてしまう。

1994年にキャピトル・レコードと契約。(Nirvana, Sonic Youth, やCounting Crows などがいるDGC Records だからか？)

この時期に、drummer のJollymon からd Greg Eklundに変わり、1995年5月に メジャーからは1stアルバムになる(トータルは2nd) この『Sparkle and Fade』をリリースした。

アルバムは大成功で、Everclearの名を一気に有名にした。

シングルも 【Heroin Girl】,【Heartspark Dollarsign】, 【You Make Me Feel Like a Whore】,そしてこの【Santa Monica】と好セールスを叩き出した。

今日Lyraが和訳した【Santa Monica】はアメリカではシングルカットされなかったらしい。

多分、歌詞が自殺をほのめかすからか？

アメリカって自殺や宗教絡みになると本当に厳しいのよね。

日本では余り気にならないような言葉ですら、「連想出来るから」とピーが入ったり、Pearental Guidanceがついたり、酷いと放送禁止になったりする。

この【Santa Monica】の場合シングルにはならなかったが、ラジオプレイ(MTV)が好調で、ビルボード100の29位にランクインしたのだから凄い。

他にもHot Mainstream Rock Tracks チャートで1位、Hot Modern Rock Tracks chartでは5位。　 オーストラリア、カナダ、ニュージーランド、イギリスでもTop40内にランクインし、特にオーストラリアでは、大ヒットした。

あれから活動し続けて来たのも、根強いファンが各国にいるお陰だろう。

一昨年の2018年にニューアルバムをリリースしているし、もうそろそろ、新譜リリースがありそうな予感がする〜。

【Santa Monica】は、先程別れの歌であると話した。

死んでも自分のハートから、頭から離れない恋人に贈る、サヨウナラと愛してるの歌だ。

この【Santa Monica】は、Artの若い時の恋愛を書いた歌詞で出来ている。

Artの歌詞は、ほぼ実体験らしいから、このアルバム全体に、昔の死んでしまった彼女の影がチラついているように感じるよ。

夢のように現実にも現れてしまう自殺した彼女の顔を見てしまい、未だに彼女を思う主人公。

それはArtだ。

若い時の恋愛と言うのもあるだろうが、大事な人を亡くした悲しみから、Artはサンタモニカの桟橋から飛び降りた。

Lyraは、その時の溺れてしまった感覚をArtは、書きたかったんじゃないのかな？と感じる。

そのせいか、聴くたびに、大好きな海の波が、首まで押し寄せてくるあの感覚と、Breakする波に乗ってフワッと宙を浮くなような浮遊感を思い出すの。

悲しい歌だし、逃れようとしても愛しい人の顔を思い出してしまう苦行にも似た状況の歌だが、この海の感覚をおもいださせる歌詞が、不思議と優しく感じてしまう。

まるで「世界が死ぬのを見ても良いや」って気がしてしまうくらいに。

まるでシンボル的な椰子の木が生えてる場所で育ったから、その景色を利用するんだよ。その場所で育ったんだから。サンタモニカと呼ばれるあの街、海の近くの街でね。まるでLAみたいなさ。でも沿岸の街でね。俺は寒くて悪い人間関係しかない場所で育ったのさ。俺は、思うんだよ、皆んな心の中で安全な楽園みたいな場所を思い描くってさ。それも悪い時期を取り去っつくれるような場所だ。物事の終わりは、始まりでもあるのさ。誰かには、ヤバイ仕事から抜け出す時だったり、人生の悪行だったり、口汚ない人間関係とかのね。」

とArtは語る。

やはり【Santa Monica】は、サヨウナラの歌であるのだ。

そして、新しい生き方をしようとする男の出発の歌でもあるのだ。

別れと、始まりの歌。

それを理解出来たら、暗くとも歩き出す良い曲だと思う。

だが9.11があってからはらCCCの載せてはいけない曲リストに入っているらしい。

不謹慎だと思われる曲(歌詞)は、公には出さないと言うことか？

多分 “Watch the world die”の歌詞が、不謹慎だと思われたのかもしれない(あくまでも予想ですが)。

個人的には、優しい歌だと思う。

悪態をついているのは、自分を置いて先に逝ってしまった愛する人への、悲しみと怒りと愛するが故の慟哭だ。

愛しているからこそ、叫ぶのだ。

もっとしてあげられる事があったんじゃないか？助けてあげられたのでは？

そう残されたものはずっと悲しみ、自分を責め続ける。

だって先に一人で逝って欲しくないもんね。

いつか、この苦しみから逃れられる日が来るのだろうか？

そう悩む生き残った人間は、自問自答しながら、生きて行く。

だから安心出来る、優しい場所を人は求めるのだろう。

だから、Artは歌詞に書いたのかもしれない。

悲しくても生きている。

生きていかなければならないからだ。

Everclear is an American rock band formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1991. The band was formed by Art Alexakis, the band’s lead songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist; and for most of the band’s height of popularity, consisted of Craig Montoya on bass guitar and Greg Eklund on drums. After the limited release of their independently released debut album, World of Noise, the band found success with their first three albums on Capitol Records: Sparkle and Fade, So Much for the Afterglow, and Songs from an American Movie Vol. One: Learning How to Smilewhich were all certified platinum in sales. However, the following two albums Songs from an American Movie Vol. Two: Good Time for a Bad Attitude and Slow Motion Daydream, were not as well received, and as sales suffered, Montoya and Eklund left the band shortly after in 2003.

n an October 2003 interview with Songfacts, Alexakis explained the song:

I’m using a place where I grew up and palm trees as iconic references. It’s what I grew up with. I grew up in a seaside town called Santa Monica, which is like L.A. but on the coast. I’ve lived in cold places and been in bad relationships, and I think everybody has a place in their mind that is like a safe haven. It’s also about getting away from bad times … the ending of something is also the beginning of something new, whether it’s with someone or getting out of a bad job, a bad way of life or an abusive relationship.

When Alexakis was a teenager, his girlfriend committed suicide; shortly thereafter, Alexakis attempted the same by jumping off the Santa Monica Pier in southern California. One theory as to the meaning of this song is that Alexakis was drawing on this experience from earlier in his life.

Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the song was placed on the list of post-9/11 inappropriate titles　distributed by Clear Channel Communications.
