【Paper Cut】のミュージックビデオ、【In the End】ビデオの背景はカリフォルニアの砂漠で撮影。バンド自体は、ロサンゼルスのスタジオ ステージで演奏し、完成したバージョンは、顕著な CGI 効果と合成が使用された賜物だ。
スタジオのステージで演奏することで、ハーンとコックスは終盤近くでステージの上に水道管を設置。バンドをびしょぬれにすることに成功。これにより、独特の雰囲気を醸し出している。
ミュージックビデオはファンタジー設定で行われていて、幻想的だ。この大規模な作品は、CGIアニメーションが使用されている。
アルバム『HybridTheory』のアルバムのジャケット・アートワークの「翼のある兵士」に似た「翼のある兵士」を上に乗せたエジプトのように見える巨大な像の上で演奏しているのがクールだ。

【In The End】は、主に一人の人間の失敗に基づいている。
貴方(主人公)と一緒にいたくない女の子との関係を築こうとしていることは、無駄な時間だということだ。
Mike Shinodaは、この曲についてこう言っている
「 ハリウッドとヴァインのリハーサルスタジオで、窓のない部屋で一晩働いて、これをまとめたのを覚えている。何時なのか分からなったよ。疲れたときは寝て、形になるまでこの曲を作ったんだ。それを最初に聞いたのはRob だった。Rob は、これは『まさに彼が私たちに書きたいと思っていた種類の曲だ』と俺に言ったんだ（言い換えれば）。
質疑応答の中で、Chester Bennington は、この曲に熱心ではなかったと認めている。

特徴
【In The End】は、そのアプローチにおいて非常に哲学的だ。そしてその意味に関して2つの人気のある考え方がある。
1つは、メインボーカルであるChester Bennington の子供時代に基づいていることだ。より具体的には、いじめられている人の視点から全てを細く言及している。2番目の節で「嘲笑されている」という言及があるが、それが真実だとすれば、その歌の読み方は、彼を虐待していた人との関係から離れてしまった現在の状態を歌っているのだ。勿論、現在から見た過去をもだが。
2つ目の考えは。もっと人気のある理解であろう。【In The End】は、運命のロマンチックな関係に焦点を当てていると言う考え方だ。
より具体的には、歌手は特定の女性の追跡に従事しているが、彼はやがて自分が前進しておらず、無駄な努力に貴重な時間を費やしていることに気づいていくのだ。
なぜ複数の解釈が出来るのか？その理由は、【IntheEnd】の歌詞が、叙情的で非常に曖昧だからだろう。確かに、彼らは、おそらく歌手が自分の命をたつのと同じくらい恐ろしい何かを指している。
支配的な感情は決意の1つだからだ。

【In The End】には、間違いなく社会的な要素がある。したがって、彼がこの主張をするとき、彼は自分が従事している実際の関係の文脈の中でも失敗しているし、社会的にも失敗しているというダメダメな状態を、災難の塊でしかないのだから、救われない。
結局、彼が本当に主張したいことは、この関係を機能させるための彼の試みが失敗したと言う事実は、それほど問題ではないのだ。サブリミナルな意味合いでは、これは他の人（つまり、受取人）が持っている人格の欠陥によるものであるということにもなる。
つまり受け取った人間の現在の心情、経済的状況、社会的な状況などにより、意味合いが違う歌詞になって来るということだ。
【In The End】は、面白さはないとCheser は考えていた。注目すべき興味深い点は、Chester(1976-2017）が【In The End】を嫌っていたことだろう。彼は実際にとても嫌っていたので、アルバムに含めたくなかったのだ。しかし、曲が大爆発した後(大ヒットした後)、彼は自分の評価が「間違っている」ことに気づいたのだ。
2001年にメリーランド州で2人の同級生を殺害した、チャールズ・アンドリュー・ウィリアムズという10代の銃乱射事件があったのだが、チャールズは、Linkin Park の大ファンだった。彼が彼の行動を合理化するために彼の父に書いたメモで、彼が実際にこの歌の合唱から数行を引用したので、これが重要になってしまった。
そのためLinkin Parkは、銃撃の犠牲者にすぐに哀悼の意を表した。結果、ウィリアムズ自身は、終身刑50年の刑に服している。

多感な時期のティーンエイジャーや若者が閉鎖的状況で、なおかつ孤独で理解者がいなければ、音楽やそれに変わる何かに縋り付いたり、影響を多大に受けがちになるのは当然だ。だから、歌詞を書いたグループ、と言うことだけて、Linkin Parkだけが攻められるのは悲しすぎる。

【In The End】は、普遍的な関心事を描いた歌詞だろう。時間のハイパーアウェアネスとそれを使って「建設的な」何かをする必要性を教え込んでいる。

Linkin Park’s “In The End” is very-philosophical in its approach. And there are two popular schools of thought concerning its meaning. One is that it is based on the main vocalist, Chester Bennington’s childhood. More specifically it is being relayed from the perspective of someone who is being bullied, thus the reference to being ‘mocked’ in the second verse. And if such is the case, the way the song reads is such that he has since moved on from his relationship with the person who was mistreating him.
The other, perhaps more-popular understanding is that “In the End” is centered on a doomed romantic relationship. Or more specifically, the singer is engaged in the pursuit of a certain lady. But he eventually comes to realize that he isn’t making any headway and is committing valuable time to a wasted effort.

In The End” has become one of Linkin Park’s most recognizable and signature songs. Chester Bennington, the band’s lead vocalist, initially disliked the song and did not want it to be included on Hybrid Theory. It was remixed on Reanimation as “Enth E ND”. The music video of the song, directed by Nathan Cox and the band’s turntablist Joe Hahn, featured the band in a fantasy setting.
Ahead of the release for the 20th anniversary reissue for Hybrid Theory, Linkin Park released a demo version of “In the End” as the second single from the re-release of Hybrid Theory on October 1, 2020.
In the End” was released as a single on October 9, 2001. The single CD was released as a “Part 1” single and a “Part 2” single. They differed in tracks and cover color: the “Part 1” cover is yellow and the “Part 2” cover is red. A DVD version of “In the End” was also released which includes an audio version of “In the End”, “Crawling” music video and four 30 seconds interviews.
On March 27, 2002, the single was released in Japan as a 7-track CD called In the End: Live & Rare. It contains live tracks of “Papercut”, “Points of Authority” and “A Place for My Head”, “Step Up” (originally by the early Linkin Park precursor Hybrid Theory that appeared on Hybrid Theory EP), “My December” and “High Voltage”.
Why Multiple Interpretations?
The reason that such varying interpretations can come from the same song is due to the lyrical content of “In the End” being very ambiguous. Indeed they can be interpreted as pointing to something as dreadful as possibly the singer taking his own life, for the dominant sentiment is one of resolve. In other words, the singer has worked hard towards a specific goal, whether it be getting a certain lady, making peace with his frenemies or what you have. And he has made perceivable progress. But despite this, “in the end it doesn’t even matter”.
That’s another way of saying that, in the grand scheme of things, he accomplished nothing. Indeed he goes on to insinuate that ultimately whether he succeeds or fails, is inconsequential.
But that being said, there is definitely a social element to this song. So when he makes this assertion, he is doing so within the context of an actual relationship he is engaged in. But the nature of this association isn’t specified. And in the end, it doesn’t even matter, for the point he is really trying to put forth is that his attempts to make this relationship work have failed. And the subliminal implication is that this is due to personality flaws which the other person (i.e. the addressee) possesses.
Bennington wasn’t a fun of “In the End”
Something interesting to note is that Linkin Park’s lead singer Chester Bennington (1976-2017) disliked “In the End”. He actually disliked it so much that he didn’t want it to be included on the album. But after the track blew up, he realized that he was “wrong” in his assessment.
Mass Shooter’s Inspiration
On a completely different note, a teenage mass shooter named Charles Andrew Williams, who murdered two of his schoolmates in 2001 in the state of Maryland, was a big fan of Linkin Park. This becomes significant because in the note he had written to his dad rationalizing his actions, he actually quoted a couple of lines from the chorus of this song. Linkin Park promptly offered their condolences to the victims of the shooting. And in the end, Williams himself is serving a prison sentence of 50 years to life.
The members of Linkin Park are credited as the writers of “In the End”. They are M. Shinoda, J. Hahn, C. Bennington, B. Delson and R. Bourdon. And the track was produced by Don Gilmore, who has worked on a number of their tunes.
This song taps into a universal concern: hyper-awareness of time and the inculcated need to do something ‘constructive’ with it. Most of us spend most of our lives in a dilemma just trying to decide what course of action to take from the debilitating infinity of possibilities supposedly within our grasp. Remember that time didn’t exist for most people even 100 years ago, at least not in terms of the seconds ticking by with the ‘pendulum swinging’. Time is a modern invention, and along with the atomisation of human ‘society’ and the dehumanising effects of technology, accounts for the anxiety of the post-war generations. If you do the maths, the population has expanded massively while opportunities have only increased slightly, despite the big lie that there are opportunities for all if you just try hard enough. This song is about the realisation of this lie, and the unquenchable anger that is directed towards the self in this individualistic age. This is the greatest achievement of the neo-liberal capitalist democracy – we are supposedly free and unbounded so when we fail we beat ourselves up instead of having social revolutions. For me, this song is the greatest emotional evocation of this dire mental situation, and is best served up with a dose of early Manic Street Preachers for the intellectual and political side of things.
“In the End” is mainly based on one person’s failure.
Its most possible meaning is that it’s about time wasted on trying to build a relationship with a girl who doesn’t want to be with you.
Mike Shinoda said this about the song:
I remember putting this together in our rehearsal studio on Hollywood and Vine, working overnight in a room with no windows. I had no idea what time of day it was; I just slept when I was tired, and worked on this song until it took shape. The first guy to hear it was Rob, who told me (I’m paraphrasing) that this was ‘exactly the kind of song he wanted us to write.
During a Q&A, Chester Bennington admitted that he wasn’t enthusiastic about this song:
I don’t really participate in picking singles. I learnt that after making Hybrid Theory. I was never a fan of “In the End” and I didn’t even want it to be on the record, honestly. How wrong could I have possibly been?

The band would clarify more about the song in an interview with SiriusXM to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hybrid Theory:
This idea is illustrated by the story The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe.
In the story, a prisoner wakes up to find himself strapped down to a board while a giant pendulum swings lower and lower. It is only until it reaches a point inches above his body does he manage to escape.
Both the poem and this lyric pay homage to the value of time in reference to life and death.
The second time this bridge is sung in the song, is usually sung by the audience in the concert. The results are pretty epic most of the time, but it almost resulted in a punch in the face of Mike Shinoda during the recording of the 2007’s Road to Revolution DVD.
“I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end it doesn’t even matter
I had to fall to lose it all
But in the end it doesn’t even matter”
This chorus evokes existential nihilism, which posits that personal accomplishments, and even life itself, are without inherent meaning. Chester’s specific loss is about wasting time trying to build a relationship with a woman who didn’t want him, but his phrasing extends the idea of apathy to any applicable pursuit.
Charles Andrew Williams used these first two lines in a message that he left before shooting and killing two classmates at a high school in Santee, California in March 2001.
