昨日(8月1日)、アメリカで高速道路の陸橋から飛び降りようとする男性を発見した女性が、説得して救うと言うニュースがあったのをご存知の方も多いだろう。

彼女 Christinaが彼の飛び降りを思いとどませることが出来たのは、Linkin Parkリンキン・パークの曲の歌詞を引用したからだと言う。

「まさか、あの曲じゃないよね？」

そう Lyraが予想した通り、彼女はあの曲を引用したのだった、、、

“One More Light” is a song by American rock band Linkin Park. It is the ninth and title track from their seventh studio album of the same name, as well as their last single with longtime lead vocalist Chester Bennington. The song was co-written with Eg White about a friend of the band, Amy Zaret, who had died of cancer. The song was released to US contemporary hit radio on October 3, 2017 as the album’s third single. It is Bennington’s second posthumously released single.

The music video for this song was also voted number one in a poll of Fuse Top 40 Videos of 2017 and is also nominated for Best Rock Video at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.

きっと色んなことがあっても、いつも笑顔を絶やさずに、人を和ませている人だったんだと思う。

このミュージックビデオはMTV Video Music Awardsの Best Rock Videoに選ばれた。

シンプルな曲だからこそ輝く光がある。

ギターと僅かなサンプリングと音数少ないベースと、Chesterの歌声。

大切な人を失う悲しみ、焦燥感をキラキラ光る星のように表現した【One More Light】は、人に愛と温もりと命の大切さを教えてくれる名曲だと思う。

この７枚目のアルバムで「Linkin Parkは売れ線になった」と賛否両論だったが、こんなに胸に来る曲を私たちに残してくれたのだから、「文句言わないでちゃんと聴こうよ」と言いたい。

カリフォルニア州オレンジカウンティ保安事務所は、通報が入り現場に直行。

車を停めるとChristina Settanni さんの善行をビデオに記録して紹介した。

クルマが行き交う高速道路で彼女だけが停車し、黒人男性に手を差し伸べた。「バックミラーで彼を目にした時に、停まるべきだと感じた、誰もしないのならば。」と言う。

そして、男性の隣に腰掛けて「あなたが飛び降り流ならば、私も飛び降りるわ」など説得を続け、彼女が大好きなバンドLinkin Parkの曲である、この【One More Light】の歌詞 “Who cares if one more light goes out? Well , I do” を口にした。

「それが彼の心に響いたのかは、わからないけれど彼は泣き出したの」と語るChristina。

保安官が到着して近づいた時、男性は落ち着いており保安官の手を借りて、さくからも降りることもできた。

この話を聞き、Linkin Parkも「ありがとう、Christina」とメッセージを送った。

 

 

Linkin Park は、1996年に結成されたバンド「Super Xero」を前身としオルタナティヴ・ミュージックの独自のミュージック・センスで幅広いジャンルの音楽要素を取り入れてきた。

この【One More Light】は、ヴォーカルのChester が Chrisが亡くなった時に追悼で歌ったことで有名だが(日本では知らない人の方が多いと思うが)、元は、リズムキダーの Mike Shinoda がメンバー全員が昔から仲良しだった女性が癌で亡くなったことで、そのショックで行き場のない気持ちを歌詞にし、Eg Whiteと作曲していった曲なのだ。

「【One More Light】は、いわば悲しい曲だ、、、俺たちのレーベルで一緒に働いていた女性が癌で亡くなったんだ。

だから、この【One More Light】は、誰かを想う気持ちを強く表した歌なのだ。それも、突然、余りにも早くて、早すぎる死だよ。めちゃくちゃ悲しいんだ。スタジオでEg と一緒にいたんだけど、話しててさ、俺、言ったんだよ『よぉ、俺マジで今日は何も思いつかねぇよ』ってね。そしたら奴が、友達の１人が亡くなってしまった事を話し出したんだ。互いに同じ想いだったし、この想いを曲にして行ったんだ。この歌の大事なとこはさ、本当の、本当にトラウマになるくらいの悲しい事って終わりは来るんだよ、そして、大事なのは、君が気にかけているよ、って事を相手に分からせてやる事なんだよ。」

まさに、いつもこのブログでLyraがアホみたいに繰り返し言ってることと同じだなぁ、ってこのMike の言葉を聞いた時に思った。

愛しているならば、愛してるって言葉に出して相手に伝えなきゃダメなんだよ。

「あなたのことを心配しているよ」とか、相手を思いやる言葉や、「愛してる」って想う気持ちは、何も恥ずかしい事ではない。

全ては自分たちの命に感謝する言葉と同じだとLyraは想うからだ。

おかしいと言う人もいるかもしれないが、

Lyraには、「愛してる」は「貴方が生きていてくれてありがとう」って意味だと想うんだもの。

生を肯定する言葉、これ以上はないんだよ。

2017年5月19日にアルバム『One More Light』をリリースし、バンドメンバーによるセルフ・プロデュースであり、チャートでも全米1位を獲得した。

だが、アルバムの方向性が今までと真逆なポップ路線へと大胆にシフトチェンジした為、ファンの賛否両論が巻き起こった。

そして、2017年7月20日、リードボーカルのChester Bennington チェスター・ベニントンがロサンゼルスの自宅で首を吊り自殺しているのが発見された。

こちらは  Chris Cornell クリス・コーネル(→ 『貴方の声がずっと好き。 Chris Cornell , great singer, R.I.P. …』)が亡くなった時に、Chesterが追悼の意味を込めて歌った時のライブです。

仲良しだった２人のことを考えると、涙が止まらない。

Chester がメチャ頑張って歌っているから余計、涙が止まらない。

 Lyraには、Chris Cornell クリス・コーネル の死が未だに上手く処理できていない。

彼の突然の死が未だに信じられず、CDやBlu-rayを見るたびに、まだロードに出ているんじゃないか？と感じてしまう。

だから、無性に文章にして書いてしまうし、Chesterが仲良しだった Chrisの死を引きずり、彼を追って同じ死に方で死んで行ったと言うのも、理解できてしまうだけにLinkin Parkの事を書くのが辛かった。

でも、彼がいたLinkin Parkの楽曲が１人の男性の心を動かした。

Chester の歌声によって素晴らしいこの【One More Light】がより光りを増して輝き、Christinaの心に残っていたからだ。

音楽って素晴らしい、と言っている人がいるが、Lyraには音楽と言うよりこの【One More Light】の歌詞が人の心を動かす強い愛のメッセージがあったからだと言いたい。

心汚い者ばかりで溢れる世界。

１人の命が消えたって、どうでも良いと言う奴もいる。

死んでいく人をスマホで撮るような人間ばかりだろう。

でも、その中に愛を知る人達がまだいる。

Linkin Park is an American rock band from Agoura Hills, California. The band’s current lineup comprises vocalist/rhythm guitarist Mike Shinoda, lead guitarist Brad Delson, bassist Dave Farrell, DJ/keyboardist Joe Hahn, and drummer Rob Bourdon, all of whom are founding members. Vocalists Mark Wakefield and Chester Bennington and bassist Kyle Christner are former members of the band.

“One More Light” is the eponymous song on this album. Mike Shinoda sat down to describe the song in an interview with Zach Sang:

The song, “One More Light”, was actually, it’s kind of sad…a friend of ours who worked for the label passed away. She got cancer and it was, like, really, really fast. It was super sad…I was in the studio with Eg [White], and we had been talking…I told him, “Dude, there’s nothing else on my mind today…he was telling me about one of his friends who had passed away, and we just got on this thing like, let’s just write about it…The point of the song is that through something really, really traumatic…one of the most important things you can do is to let people know that you care.

In the same interview, Mike described the tone of the song as being “very acoustic, with guitar and piano sounds and no percussion.” With its uplifting message of not taking your personal fortunes for granted, there exists a tenuous link between this song and “Until It’s Gone”.

The song was debuted live on the 9th of May, 2017 in Chile during a concert. The song was posthumously dedicated to Chris Cornell during Linkin Park’s performance at Jimmy Kimmel Live, who passed away the day before the album was released.

Mere months later, it was posthumously dedicated to Chester himself when he too passed away some time after the album’s release.

 

In late 2016, Shinoda revealed that he had worked with British songwriter Eg White on a song. In an interview leading up to the reveal of the album’s lead single, “Heavy”, Shinoda revealed that White had worked with him on the song “One More Light” while Brad Delson attended the funeral of one of the band’s friends. When asked what he wanted to write about by White, Shinoda said that the only thing he could think about was the friend who had passed. He revealed that, in spite of the horrible inevitability of loss, the song is about letting people know that you care.

Later on the band revealed the friend was Amy Zaret, a 25-year veteran of Warner Bros. Recordswho died in October 2015 following a cancer diagnosis. Mike said,

“We had a friend who worked for the record label for a long time and came up with us from years and years ago. She started out in radio promo and was basically driving us to the local radio stations in the U.S. Midwest, eventually getting promoted and promoted. At some point last year, I suddenly heard that she’d got cancer – and then all of a sudden she had died. We knew we absolutely had to write about what happened. It’s a sad song, but the pay-off is that when something dramatic and painful like that happens, the most important thing to do is to connect with the people you love and remind them you care about them.”

 

The band surprised some of the people who worked at Warner with the song, and people reacted very emotionally to it, with some weeping, giving hugs, and telling stories. They played the song on the TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live! and dedicated it to their late friend Chris Cornell who had died a day before.

After lead singer Chester Bennington’s suicide on July 20, 2017, the band selected “One More Light” as their next single. Shinoda wrote “One More Light was written with the intention of sending love to those who lost someone. We now find ourselves on the receiving end. In memorial events, art, videos, and images, fans all over the world have gravitated towards this song as their declaration of love and support for the band and the memory of our dear friend, Chester. We are so very grateful and can’t wait to see you again.”.

On October 25, 2017, American DJ/Producer and Linkin Park collaborator Steve Aoki released his remix of “One More Light”, as his second tribute song to Bennington following his mashup, “Darker Than The Light That Never Bleeds”, which was released a month earlier.

 

The official video was uploaded to Linkin Park’s YouTube channel on September 18, 2017, and directed by Joe Hahn and Mark Fiore. It features footage of Chester performing in the middle of fans, footage of him at live shows such as Live in Texas and Road to Revolution: Live at Milton Keynes, and past music videos for their past singles “Burn It Down”, “Waiting for the End” and “Powerless”, as well as the band themselves through the years. On making the music video, Hahn said:

“It has been incredibly emotional to work on this, and especially to watch it. I feel that by doing it, we not only faced some of our biggest fears, but it enabled us to use our talents to bring some light to people that need it. As we move forward to the Hollywood Bowl show and beyond, I think about the people that connect with the band, outside and inside our circle. This video is a gesture of good will to the people that want that connection”

Upon its release, the video racked up 3 million views on YouTube in the first 24 hours. As of July 28, 2018, the video has reached over 100 million views.
