Tokyo Dome Opening Song

Defunkt (「Defunkt, the pistol that you pay for」)

This life is more than just a read-throughは、「読了」の意味があるが、演劇や映画の最初のリハーサルで、制作チームと俳優が集まって台本からセリフを暗唱し、必要に応じて部分を編集または改良できるかを練習するあの場が想像できる。

Anthony Kiedis

Anthony’s father John Kiedis was a Hollywood actor. Anthony originally moved to LA to pursue a career as an actor, before making music. “Choose not a life of imitation” is an imperative that’s likely speaking to a fan listening to the song. They’re giving advice: Be yourself; be original.

Released as a the third single from By The Way, “Can’t Stop” is known for its simple but catchy guitar riff, pulsating bass and thoroughly cryptic lyrics.

Throughout the track, Anthony Kiedis highlights the predominant theme of nurturing an inner, personal energy. He addresses the verses to the listener in an instructional tone, whilst referencing inspirational figures such as Julia Butterfly Hill, Charlie Parker, and Defunkt.

A 2002 Interview with Spin Magazine revealed that the song is one that uses the band’s technique of writing lyrics to establish a rhythm, rather than making a rhythm to establish lyrics.

The track was accompanied by a surreal music video inspired by the “One-Minute Sculptures” of American artist Erwin Wurm, in which the four band members perform random abstract actions worthy of display in an art gallery.

The song is instrumentally composed in 4/4 standard time and in the key of E minor. The verse plays twice before the bridge, as well as the chorus. During the bridge, Frusciante plays sparsely in a reggae style, only strumming on the up-beat. Following the bridge, Frusciante utilizes a fuzz (Big Muff Pi by Electro Harmonix) in his solo. He also makes extensive use of a tone-bend.

Lyrically, “Can’t Stop” is a prime example of the band’s occasional use of writing lyrics to an established rhythm, rather than rhythms to established lyrics. Kiedis writes in his typical circumlocutory style. Nonetheless, the predominant theme of cultivating an inner, personal energy (evidenced in the title and the final line: “This life is more than just a read-through.”) can be understood in almost every line. The verses are addressed to the listener (or perhaps to himself), in an instructional tone, with references to Kiedis’s own life, as well as citing the inspiration of Defunkt (“Defunkt, the pistol that you pay for”) and Julia Butterfly Hill (“J. Butterfly is in the treetops”). The bridge marks a slight departure, as Kiedis suggests he had temporarily forgotten this philosophy, and looks to a new girlfriend to help himself back on his feet.

The Mark Romanek-directed music video for the single, released on January 24, 2003, features all four of the band members doing seemingly random and excessively abstract actions such as holding many water bottles or attempting to balance buckets on their heads. It begins with the camera swooping through a yellow tube to Anthony Kiedis, wearing glasses, and is subsequently followed by the foursome running through a hall with light fixtures attached to their backs. The band engages in various activities, such as wearing a giant purple hippopotamus mask, playing with rubber balls, jumping, abstract scenes with boxes, buckets, water bottles, trash cans, flying through the air, pink foam peanuts, plants, playing guitar in a room full of empty blue chairs/room with lamps turning on and off.

At certain segments of the video, one can see guitarist John Frusciante playing an orange Toronado and a silver Fender Stratocaster, which is unlike his style due to the fact that he only plays vintage guitars (both guitars being under five years of age). Frusciante later explained he was instructed to play the guitars by director Mark Romanek since they blended well with the color scheme used in the video; he also noted that he was never actually playing the guitars.

Inspiration for the video was attributed to Austrian artist Erwin Wurm, as indicated by the sign at the end of the video. The lighting was positioned in order to provide a clean-cut, contemporary atmosphere which would integrate with the video’s concept.  Orange was chosen to be the backsplash color by Romanek. His creative hand attempted to mirror Wurm’s abstract “One Minute Sculptures”, by having the band perform random scenes, which seem to fit no purpose. However, in retrospect, they were not intended to be anything more than an homage.

Anthony is no stranger to fame and doesn’t shy away from indulging in the rockstar lifestyle if it means he can continue doing the things he loves, i.e. making music for fans. “The shindig” could either be his career as an entertainer or the drugs he can’t quit due to said career.

Within the United States, Indian reservations are parcels of land recognised as”domestic dependent nations”. During early treaties, Native American tribes were made to surrender large areas of land to the U.S. These tribes were able to retain some of these reservations, maintaining the authority to govern themselves and manage their own land.

In his 2004 autobiography Scar Tissue, Anthony Kiedis outlined his family heritage and distant Native American ancestry. Writing about his grandfather, John Alden Kiedis, Anthony said:

He met a beautiful woman named Molly Vandenveen, whose heritage was a pastiche of English, Irish, French, and Dutch (and, as we’ve recently discovered, some Mohican blood, which explains my interest in Native American culture and my identification with Mother Earth).

Several of Anthony’s tattoos are Native American-inspired – a large “Halda Thunderbird” notably spans across his upper back. Additionally, RHCP have previously referenced Native American themes in the songs “American Ghost Dance” and “Johnny Kick a Hole in the Sky”.

Defunkt is a 70s-80s funk/rock/jazz band. The song’s music is similar to Defunkt. Furthermore, it’s a play on words that sounds like this funk. Either way, Defunkt, this style of music, is the pistol, the weapon, that you, the fan, pays for. We who enjoy RHCP, pay for their Defunkt/style of music because it’s our weapon against the machine, or whatever else we face in life.

You have to make your mark on the world in some lasting way, so go shine so bright that you get a star on Hollywood BLVD.

However, even if you make your mark you have to keep on working. “Burning so bright I wonder what the wave meant” is a reference to the fact that RHCP has endured the rise and fall of numerous popular musical styles in their 30 year history, due to their continued creativity and talent.go.

Make an empowered entrance back into life if you stumble, for example by becoming addicted to heroin, and manage to make it back alive.

the world I love〜 The chorus is his way of saying how much he loves making music and the hard work he puts into it.

He doesn’t know when it’ll be time to walk away from music, but until then he will continue to give us everything he’s got.

In his 2004 autobiography, Scar Tissue, Anthony Kiedis referenced receiving ozone therapy as treatment for Hepatitis C. A holistic nurse named Sat Hari accompanied the band during the By The Way tour, and administered ozone intravenously to both Flea and Anthony:

One of my main soul mates is Sat Hari. Flea brought her on tour to administer intravenous ozone therapy to him. Sat Hari is a nurse, an American Sikh, a sweet, incredibly sheltered, turban-wearing young lady… She’s maternal and she’s warm and she’s loving and she’s unassuming, a complete breath of fresh air and female energy… For me she’s like a sister and mother and caretaker and nurse all in one. Sat Hari endeared herself to everybody in the band and the crew, and she became the den mother to the entire organization

As a form of alternative medicine, ozone therapy claims to increase the amount of oxygen in the body by administering ozone (chemical symbol, O3) directly into the patient. The controversial therapy aims to activate the immune system, and stimulate oxygen metabolism to increase the amount of oxygen released to body tissues. Although there’s a lack of credible evidence supporting its usage, ozone therapy is believed to assist in the treatment of conditions such as hepatitis, cancer, and AIDS.
