人生色々…そう言ってしまうと非常に簡単なことのように聞こえてしまうが、本当に人生とは、人によって様々で違うもの。
良く「幸運の量は、皆んな同じで、ただいつ使うか、一気にドカン!と使うか、小出しにするかだけの違いだ」と某コメディアンが言っていたが、同じと言うことは全く無いと思う。
人それぞれバックグラウンドがあるし、正確の良し悪しによっても獲得率が変動するし、系統づけて似てる分類は出来るだろうけれど…
実際に周りにいる人達にも、悪い事も逆にとびきり良い事も何も起き無い人もいるし、逆に紆余曲折がある人も居る。その違いの凄さと言ったら！だから、簡単に全員を一括りには出来ない筈だ。
今日Lyraが取り上げるバンドは、絶好調だった時期に音楽業界ならではの酷い目にあわされ、ズタボロになった。
日本でどれくらい人気があるかは分からないが、本国アメリカでは人気バンドなのに、しばらく揉め事のせいで動けない状態で、なんとも辛い時期を味わい、人間不信にもなっていたらしい。
「本当に醜悪な人間達がいるって初めて知ったんだ」とインタビューで言っていた。恐ろしくて酷い人間達がいるのをLyraも去年初めて知ったから、彼らが他人事には思えなくなってしまい、曲も良いので今日取り上げることにしました。応援したくなるわ。

この湿った音で、なおかつクリアーなサウンドが、随分前にこのブログで紹介したBattle Meに似ている。どちらも哀愁のあるサウンド。ただ、こちらのThe Palmsの方は、歌詞が怒りまくっている。

The Palmsは、Ben Rothhard(ヴォーカル)と、Johnny Zambetti(ギター)が中心になり結成したバンド。
2人ともロスアンジェルス、ベニス出身のアメリカ人バンドTerraplane Sunのメンバーだ。
Terraplane Sunは、 Ben Rothbard（リードボーカル、ギター、ハーモニカ）、Johnny Zambetti（リードギター、マンドリン、ボーカル）、Chris “Cecil” Campanaro（ベース、ボーカル）、Gabe Feenberg（ラップスチールギター、アコーディオン、トロンボーン）、ライルリドル（ドラム）で構成され、バンド【Get Me Golden】で最もよく知られている。
この2人が、TerraplaneSunでのレコードレーベルともめたのだ。それがきっかけで、バンド活動が出来なくなり、暫く休止。そして、ベンとジョニーの両方が、TerraplaneSunが単に「1秒間保留」させられた状態になっていると分かった為。次のTerraplane Sunプロジェクトの時が来るまで、彼らは完全なコントロールと最終決定権を持つ新しいサウンドを実験するために、このThe Palmsを結成したのだ。ThePalmsは5曲のセルフタイトルEPをリリースしたのが、この作品になる。 EPは残念ながら20分未満と短い。だがらThePalmsが以前のバンドとは異なる道の音楽を作っていることを明らかにしたのは、躍進的な出来事だと思う。

音楽性
The Palmsは、すべてのポピュラー音楽への愛情を組み合わせ、新鮮で高揚感のあるサウンドを想像している。
まるでロサンゼルスの夏の夜にぴったりのサウンドトラックだ。障壁や阻害のない音楽を作る必要性があったのは、JohnoyとBenが彼らのバンドTerraplaneSunで酷い目にあったからで、外で芸術的なアイデアを探求しようと決意したからだ。
5,000万を超えるストリームとYoutubeの視聴回数も上がり、The Palmsは、彼らが音楽性活動にとどまり、勢いが増していることを明らかにした。
2018年の後半をロブ・シュナフ（ベック、カート・ヴァイル、エリオット・スミスなど）と一緒にスタジオで過ごした後、2019年には、次のEP、テレビ放送のデイドリーム、全国ヘッドライニングツアーなど活躍の場を広げている。

【Push Off】について
【Push Off】のインスピレーションについて、Benは嫌な奴らとの災難な出来事だったと言う。
Ben 「このEPは俺達二人にとって、非常に興味深い時期に書かれたものなんだ。それは恐ろしいレーベルの状況からの過渡期でのこと。いわば音楽界のダークサイドを初めて味わったんだ。俺達は、いかに嫌悪で邪悪な人間達がいるのかを学んだよ。これは俺達が経験したすべてに対する俺達の反応だったんだ。俺達は常に深く掘り下げて、それらの出来事から感じている怒りや感情を表現しようとしているんだ。しかし、それは主に困難な時代を乗り切ることだ。誰もが自分にとって難しいことを経験するものだ。核となるメッセージは、回復力と希望だ。俺たちは、自分がやりたいことを人々に止めさせたくないよ。それは最大の非常に迷惑なことだ。人々は、それが俺達にどのような影響を与えるかについてあまり気にしないときに俺たちの人生に参加してくるんだよ」
非常に迷惑極まりない人間達によって活動がまならなくなった、それに対する苛立ちを曲にしたのだ。
だから怒り爆発寸前の感情を出した歌詞になっているのだ。

【Push Off】は、周囲の世界から影響をモロに受けている人についてのアコースティックバラードだ。世界は本質的に彼らを引きずり下ろし、この歌詞の世界自体が壊れそうなのに任せて、一緒に壊れるように仕向けてくるのである。
人が自分を支配するとして、最終的には他の誰かが私の心を引き継いだり、私の選択をしたり、この地球に残された残りの時間をどのように過ごすかを選択したりすることはできない。
もしそれを強いる相手(存在)は、何の理由があろうと。終わらせなければならないのだ。一方的な支配関係の何が幸せか? 独裁政治と同じ自由のない関係には未来がない。どちらかが破綻してしまうだけだ。
この歌詞の彼女は最低で、好きなように彼(主人公)を治療すれば、逃げることができると考えている。だから「お前なんかクソだ」となるのだ、
彼女が彼に何をしても、彼は立ち上がることに大胆になる。たとえ彼がそれをする時に、気を失ったても、金なしでも、壊れたとしても。
最後の方では、次第にやけっぱちになって行く。だが、どんなに悪いことがあっても、キモイ奴らが主人公を殺すことはない、、、だから、逆に「俺を殺せ」と言うのだ。耐えていれば、彼は生き残り、より良くなるのだ。それはレーベルと揉めたThe Palms自身を投影したのだろう。
分かりやすい言葉を使っている歌詞だがスラング多め。Fワードありありで、彼らの近しい人たちに愚痴っているようでもある。それが彼らの良さなのだろう。四畳半ロックのように親近感を覚えるファンもいるに違いない。
人は、ゲームをプレイするとき、フィールドにいる人は最前線にいて勝利を収めている人であり、サイドラインにいる人は、世に貢献していない人で、彼らは「ベンチ」にいて、世界を傍観する。それを言い表したくて、ラストの歌詞があるのだ。
「俺を最前線に置いてくれよ」は、ミュージックストリームの主流に行きたいからだろう。
「お前、ベンチ席に座っているのならさあ
自分の思ったように
戦うなんて考えるなよ」の歌詞も、ダラダラ生きてる奴に限って邪魔してくるのを批判しているのだ。
「何故なら

と怒りをぶちまけているが、これは事実であり、本質だ。
自分でやり遂げた者だけ手に入れられる。
それが成功への近道なのだ！

Push Off” is an acoustic ballad about a person being effected by the world around them. The world is essentially dragging them down and trying to bring him down with them. But the person is saying look, that’s not how it works, you may believe you control me, but ultimately no one else can take over my own mind, make my choices, or choose how to spend the rest of my time left on this Earth. “Push Off” refers to the act of ignorance, with which the author reasons must come to an end.
The Palms, a self-proclaimed hip/pop duo, started out because of strife that both Ben Rothbard and Johnny Zambetti faced with their record label in regards to their other band Terraplane Sun.
Both Ben and Johnny assured that Terraplane Sun is simply “on hold for a second”. But until the time comes for the next Terraplane Sun project, they’ll be experimenting with a new sound in which they possess total control and the final say.
Back in the spring, The Palms released a five song, self-titled EP. While the EP is unfortunately less than 20 minutes, it is apparent that The Palms are making music of a different path than their former band.
BEN: The EP was pretty much written during a very interesting period for both of us. It was a transitional phase from a horrible label situation. It was our first taste of the dark side of the music world so to speak. We learned how disgusting and evil people could be. So it was our reaction to everything we had gone through. We’re always trying to dig deep and express ourselves with some anger or whatever emotion we’re feeling from those events. But it’s mostly about forging through the tough times. Everyone goes through his or her own difficult things. The core message is resilience and hope. We don’t wanna let people stop us from what we want to do. That’s our biggest pet peeve, people getting in our lives when they really don’t care much as to how it effects us.
She’s a motherfucker that thinks she can treat him however she wants and get away with it. So, he says, “fuck you, it’s not happening.”
No matter what she does to him, he’s finally going to be bold in standing up for himself, even if he loses his mind doing it , or even the shirt off his back, going for broke.
Terraplane Sun is an American band from Venice, Los Angeles. It was formed by Ben Rothbard (lead vocals, guitar, harmonica), Johnny Zambetti (lead guitar, mandolin, vocals), Chris “Cecil” Campanaro (bass, vocals), Gabe Feenberg (lap steel guitar, accordion, trombone), and Lyle Riddle (drums). The band is best known for the Get Me Golden single.
