リバイバル？パクリ？

いやいや、オリジナルでしょ！

と、ついつい見ていてツッコミ入れたくなるトリオ。

このブログでLyra、数回に1回話しているかもしれないけど…３人組み＝トリオバンド好き。

今日は、８０’sの匂いがプンプンしているのに最新型だから引っ張りだこになったトリオを紹介するぞい。

今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、アメリカ合衆国ニューヨーク州ニューヨーク市出身のオルタナティブ・ロックバンド、Yeah Yeah Yeahs ヤー・ヤー・ヤーズ。

Vocalの Karen Oを中心としたトリオバンドである。(最近ヘルプでギターが入りましたが。)

バンド名の「yeah, yeah, yeahs（そう、そう、そうだよね）」は、NYの街で適当な相槌でみんなが言いがちな表現。

それを名付けたのだから、ちょっぴり皮肉れた「肩の力抜きましたーのダルダルなBeckフォロワーのローファイ君達かな？」と思ったらビックリする。

真逆な切れ味が良いナイフみたいよ！

その切れ味の良さに妖しい８０’s popを合わしたのが、今日Lyraが和訳する曲… Yeah Yeah Yeahs の３枚目のスタジオアルバム2009年リリースの『It’s Blitz!』から【Heads Will Roll】です。

ノリの良さから人気ドラマ Glee グリーにも使われたりあちこちで使用されている曲よ。

Yeah Yeah Yeahs is an American indie rock band formed in New York City in 2000. The group is composed of vocalist and pianist Karen O, guitarist and keyboardist Nick Zinner, and drummer Brian Chase. They are complemented in live performances by second guitarist David Pajo, who joined as a touring member in 2009 and replaced Imaad Wasif who had previously held this role. According to an interview that aired during the ABC network’s Live from Central Park SummerStage series, the band’s name was taken from modern New York City vernacular.

Their style has been described as “an art-rock trio who made an edgy post-punk, dancefloor-friendly racket that mixed up Blondie with Siouxsie and the Banshees.”

まあね、The Walking Dead ウォーキングデッドのネタバレ毎週書いてるんだから、みんな知ってるね。

ビデオ見てるとMichael Jackson マイケル・ジャクソンの【Billy Jean】を思い出したの。 内容的には【Thriller】だけど、服装と夜の街を徘徊するところは絶対に【Billy  Jean】じゃない？

あと、他のバンドも思い出したのう。その話はまた今度ねっ。

で、次は冒頭でお話ししたドラマ『Glee』のmashup マッシュアップで使われた時のもの。

こちらは怖くないから、載せておきますね。

【Thriller】をmashupに使うとは、安易な発想だな、とも思ったけれどYeah Yeah Yeahsの曲と見事に合わさり、素敵な一曲に仕上がっているからアッパレですな。

『Glee』は大好きでリアルタイムで見ていた青春ドラマだから懐かしい。

ただ、Finn 役の子が亡くなってから暫くは見ていて、、、次第に見なくなっちゃった。

この楽しげに踊る馴染みのあるキャラクター達の歌の上手さを見ると又、見直して最新シーズンまで見ようかな？

Lyraをその気(どの気？)にさせるくらい良い感じに８０’s Hit Songと違和感なくマッチしてしまう【Heads Will Roll】は、凄いな。

昔のヒットソングと同じくらいPopでインパクトがある曲よ、てことになる。

負けないパワー。

Popのパワーって浸透率高いと思うの。

いつのまにか気になってしいました、そんな思いした事あるでしょう？

1990年代後Vocal のKaren O カレンOは、Drumの ジャズ大好き青年 Brian Chase ブライアン・チェイスとオハイオ州のオーバリン・カレッジ在学中に出会う。

その後、Karen はニューヨーク大学に編入。地元の飲み屋で Guitar & Keyboards の Nick Zinner ニック・ジナーで出会い、意気投合。

アコースティック・デュオ「ユニタード」を結成するが、後にオハイオ州の伝説的なアヴァン・パンク・シーンに影響されエレクトリックに路線変更。

募集で見つけたドラマーが辞めた為に、Brian が加入し現在の３人に。

これにより Karenが言うところの「オハイオに残してきた『つまらなく、パンクで、薄汚れた』芸術学生グループのようなパンクバンド」の出来上がりとなったわけ。

余程気が合うのだろう。

最初のリハーサルで一気に沢山の曲を作り、速攻で、このブログで何回も紹介しているThe Strokes ザ・ストロークスや、

The White Stripes ザ・ホワイト・ストライプスなどの前座を務めるようになり、一気にブレイクしちゃうのだから凄い。

2001年後半、デビューアルバム『Yeah Yeah Yeahs (EP)』を自らのレーベルShiftyからリリース。Boss Hog ボス・ホグのジェリー・ティールと共にレコーディングしている。

2002年、全米をGirls Against Boys ガールズ・アゲンスト・ボーイズとツアーしたり、Jon Spencer Blues Explosion ジョン・スペンサー・ブルーズ・エクスプロージョンと共にヨーロッパ・ツアーを敢行し、さらに英国では単独ツアーを行う等、国際的にも注目を浴びるようになる。

この【Heads Will Roll】は、2009年にリリースされた３rd アルバム『It’s Blitz!』のヒットシングルであり、この曲のイメージが分かりやすいホラーだからか、Glee 以外にも、 ドラマ『The Tudors』のシーズン４で使われたり、映画『Alice In Wonderland』のマッドな Red Queen 赤の女王のシーンでも効果的なサウンドだと感じる使われ方をしています。

Formation and Fever to Tell (2000–2004)

Karen O and Brian Chase first met as students at Oberlin College in Ohio in the late 1990s, where Chase was a jazz student at the conservatory. Karen then transferred to New York University, and while in New York met Zinner in a local bar, where they formed an “instant connection.” During this time they also shared a loft with future members of the band Metric. The two formed an acoustic duo called Unitard but soon decided to “shake things up a bit” by forming a “trashy, punky, grimy” band modeled after the art student, avant-punk bands Karen O was exposed to at Oberlin. After the drummer they initially recruited bowed out, Chase joined the line-up.

The band wrote a slew of songs at their first rehearsal and soon wound up supporting The Strokes and The White Stripes, earning a significant buzz for their arty and garage punk scene. In late 2001, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs released their self-titled debut EP, which they recorded with Boss Hog’s Jerry Teel, on their own Shifty label. Early the next year the band stepped into the international spotlight, appearing at South by Southwest, touring the U.S. with Girls Against Boys and Europe with Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and headlining their own U.K. tour. Wichita Recordings distributed the group’s EP in the U.K. and Touch and Go reissued it in the States.

In 2003, the band released their debut album, Fever to Tell, which received several strong critical reviews and sold more than 750,000 copies worldwide. The album’s third single, “Maps,” received significant airplay on alternative radio. In 2010, Rolling Stone ranked “Maps” as 386th in their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The video for their 2004 single “Y Control” was directed by Spike Jonze. In October 2004, the band released their first DVD, Tell Me What Rockers to Swallow. The DVD included a concert filmed at The Fillmore in San Francisco, all of the band’s music videos to date, and various interviews. Later the same year, the band was also featured in Scott Crary’s documentary Kill Your Idols.

In November 2009, NME rated Fever to Tell the No. 5 Best Album of the Decade.
