【Blink-182 / I Miss You】和訳 Night Before Christmas 解説

Blink-182 (often stylized as blink-182; pronounced “blink one eighty two”) is an American rock band formed in Poway, California, in 1992. Since 2015, the lineup of the band has consisted of bassist and vocalist Mark Hoppus, drummer Travis Barker, and guitarist and vocalist Matt Skiba. Founded by guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge, Hoppus and drummer Scott Raynor, the band emerged from the Southern California punk scene of the early 1990s and first gained notoriety for high-energy live shows and irreverent lyrical toilet humor.

= I Miss You=

[Intro: Mark Hoppus]
I miss you, I miss you

[Verse 1: Mark Hoppus]
Hello there
The angel from my nightmare
The shadow in the background of the morgue
The unsuspecting victim of darkness in the valley
We can live like Jack and Sally if we want
Where you can always find me
And we’ll have Halloween on Christmas
And in the night we’ll wish this never ends
We’ll wish this never ends

[Interlude: Mark Hoppus]
I miss you, I miss you
I miss you, I miss you

[Verse 2: Tom DeLonge]
Where are you and I’m so sorry
I cannot sleep I cannot dream tonight
I need somebody and always
This sick strange darkness
Comes creeping on so haunting every time
And as I stare I counted
The webs from all the spiders
Catching things and eating their insides
Like indecision to call you
And hear your voice of treason
Will you come home and stop this pain tonight
Stop this pain tonight

Chorus: Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus]
Don’t waste your time on me you’re already
The voice inside my head (I miss you, I miss you)
Don’t waste your time on me you’re already
The voice inside my head (I miss you, I miss you)

[Instrumental Break]

[Chorus: Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus]
Don’t waste your time on me you’re already
The voice inside my head (I miss you, I miss you)
Don’t waste your time on me you’re already
The voice inside my head (I miss you, I miss you)
Don’t waste your time on me you’re already
The voice inside my head (I miss you, I miss you)
Don’t waste your time on me you’re already
The voice inside my head (I miss you, I miss you)

[Outro: Mark Hoppus]
I miss you, I miss you
I miss you, I miss you
I miss you, I miss you
I miss you, I miss you

I miss you….

I Miss You” is a song by Blink-182, released on February 2, 2004 as the second single from the group’s fifth studio album, Blink-182 (2003). Co-written by guitarist Tom DeLonge and bassist Mark Hoppus, they employed a method of writing separately and bringing their two verses together later. The song, produced entirely acoustic, features an acoustic electric bass, a cello, and a brushstroked drum loop. The song was inspired by The Cure song “The Love Cats” and contains references to The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993).

“Miss You” was recorded throughout 2003, and began production at the Rubin’s House, a rented home in the San Diego luxury community of Rancho Santa Fe. The song was written using the same method with which the band wrote “Feeling This”; namely, DeLonge and Hoppus would discuss themes and then set off to separate rooms of the home to write alone. The two would first have a discussion about the themes of the song “so that we were on the same page,” and then they would go away to write, putting both parts together at the end.

“Mark was always really, really good with words, so a lot of times I would ask him for help with things, to get help with how I say things better .

But we never really explained song meanings to each other,” said DeLonge. Hoppus referenced Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas at the request of Barker, with the lines “We can live like Jack and Sally if we want… and have Halloween on Christmas”, toward his then-wife, Shanna Moakler.

The trio struggled recording “I Miss You” at first, originally employing a completely different chorus reminiscent of what they considered adult contemporary music. The track was directly inspired by The Cure song, “The Love Cats”. In expanding on the song’s lyrical meaning, DeLonge said: “The song’s more about the vulnerability and kind of heart-wrenching pain you feel when you’re in love and when you’re a guy and you’re trying to tell a girl, ‘Don’t waste your time coming and talking to me because, in my head at least, you probably already gave me up a long time ago.’

In its early years, Blink-182 toured heavily behind the band’s debut, Cheshire Cat (1995). The group signed with major label MCA Records to co-distribute its second album, Dude Ranch (1997). Raynor was fired midway through a 1998 tour and replaced by Barker. The group’s next two releases, Enema of the State (1999) and Take Off Your Pants and Jacket(2001), were enormous successes on the strength of radio and MTV airplay. The eponymously titled Blink-182 followed in 2003 and marked a stylistic shift for the group. DeLonge quit in 2005, sending the band into what was termed an “indefinite hiatus”. They reunited in 2009, producing the trio’s sixth album, Neighborhoods (2011). In 2015, DeLonge again exited and was replaced by Alkaline Trio guitarist and vocalist Matt Skiba. The band’s seventh studio album, California, was released on July 1, 2016.

Blink-182 is considered a key group in the development of pop punk; the band’s combination of pop music melodies with fast-paced punk rock featured a more radio-friendly accessibility than prior bands. The trio has sold over thirteen million albums in the United States, and over 50 million albums worldwide.  In 2011, The New York Timesasserted, “no punk band of the 1990s has been more influential than Blink-182,” and even as the band receded after its 2005 split, “its sound and style could be heard in the muscular pop punk of Fall Out Boy or in the current wave of high-gloss Warped Tour punk bands, like All Time Low and The Maine.”
