今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは2013年イングランド、リヴァプールで結成された４人組ガレージバンド、 Circa Waves サーカ・ウェーブス。

デビュー前からBBC、NMEなどのメディアで話題騒然となった彼らの魅力は疾走感があるハードロックを思わせるサウンドでありながらキャッチーで覚えやすいメロディがあるからだ。

全英チャート初登場10位を記録したデビューアルバムと違い、今日紹介する曲が収録されている2nd Album 『Different Creatures』は男らしさや、ダークな暗闇を思わす作りになっている。
それもその筈、Arctic Monkeys アークティック・モンキーズやFoo Fighters フー・ファイターズといった英米のオルタナティヴバンドを多く手掛けてきた敏腕音楽プロデューサー、アラン・モウルダーとのワークがポイントだろう。
今日Lyraが和訳をしたのは、この2nd Album 収録の【Wake Up】。

Circa Waves are an English indie rock band formed in Liverpool in 2013.
The band consists of frontman Kieran Shudall (vocals, guitar), Sam Rourke (bass), Colin Jones (drums) and Joe Falconer (guitarist).

ビデオの中に出てくる2人のうちの1人赤ワンピ？の女優さんが、アングルのせいで、Prince Henry ヘンリー王子の妻Megan Markle メーガン・マークル、つまりMeghan, Duchess of Sussex、現サセックス州公爵夫人メーガンに似てる気がしちゃってザワザワしてるLyraでやんす。
違う女優さんなんだろうけどクリソツ。
今日は何か「激似」とか「クリソツ」とか「似てる」と言うワードをくっちゃべっていたLyra。
なんだろう、タイムリーな話題みたいです、そっくりさん探しは (笑)。

2013年、キエラン・シュッダル（Vo）、サム・ローク（B）とコリン・ジョーンズ（Dr）、ジョー・ファルコナー（G）の４人でリバプールから活動開始したCirca Waves。
デビュー前からBBCやNMEなどのメディアで話題騒然、12月にダブルAサイド・シングル「Get Away/Good For Me」を配信リリースし、
2014年3月シングル「Stuck In My Teeth」配信リリース。3月にインターポール、テンプルズらと共にUKツアーも行い、
7月にはデビューEPリリース、8月にサマーソニック出演初来日した。
2015年1月に単独来日公演、3月にはデビュー・アルバムと、駆け足でメジャー街道をまっしぐら。
飛ぶ鳥を落とす勢いだ。

勢い良くデビューし、即座に売れたバンドは失速するのも速い。
あっという間に、魅力が半減したり、二番煎じになってしまって尻窄み、、、というのがお決まりのスタイル。
だが、稀に勢い良く走り続ける事が出来るバンドもある。
Oasisとかね〜( 爆走し過ぎて減速し忘れて、解散しちゃったけど。)
Oasisは、スタンスを変えずに爆走し続けたが、中には時代と共にサウンドを変化させたりして続けているバンドがある。
U2とかね、Judas Priestもイメージは変わらなさそうだが、色々と実験的なことをしてきた。
Circa Wavesは、どちらかというと貫きタイプのOasisじゃなくて、少しずつ変化して時代に対応して行くU2タイプな気がする。
だって、2017年3月リリースの2nd Album『Different Creatures ディファレント・クリーチャーズ』は、キャッチーで明るいサウンドだった1stと違い、男らしさがムンムンな感じ、、、荒くれ感が出たからよ。
これは、バンドイメージを変える為にも良い変化だったとLyraは思った、、、先に続けていけるイメージだから。

イギリスのジメジメ感が感じられるサウンド。
どんよりした雲に、ネオンがボワッと輝きくあの感じに似てる。
歌詞はワザとなのか、主人公の立ち位置が見えづらい。
はっきりしたスタンスを取る歌詞が好みだから、ちと物足りない。
が、争いごとを楽しみにするところからしてイイ奴ではない。
賭け事や、チーム間の争いで、どん底までは行っていないが、ヤバい立場にいる主人公が、近いしい人間に、「どん底になりかけている俺が、これ以上やばくならないように、って指図しないでくれ」て感じ。
近しい人間は恋人かもね。
見捨てられそうだから文句言ってるのかも。
サウンドは、どう思う？
LyraにはBrit pop meets Hard Rockな気がするよ。
というか、イントロの出だしなんて、ハードロック飛び越えて、へビーメタル Heavy Metal なギターの重い音でしょ！
聴いていてHeadbangars ヘッドバンキングする人達が喜びそう、と想像しちゃいました。
それがサビのパートに来るとBrit Popのような切ないメロディに。
まるで前にこのブログで和訳＆紹介したShed Seven みたいな疾走感溢れるメロディ。
Brit popってOasisや Blurみたいな明るいイメージのバンドと、
Shed SevenやRadioheadみたいな少しShoe Gazer シューゲイザーを引きずって進化したバンドの二種類があったと思うの。
まあ、Oasisは良くここで「明るいだけのバンドじゃない」と説明して来たからLyraにとってはOasis は明るいイメージではないんだけど、ここでは世間一般の話ってことで…
面白いのは、Circa Wavesは、一個のバンドとして、この2つを体現したと思う。
1stが明るいOasis、Bluer
2ndがShed Seven って感じ。
どちらも魅力的だ。
彼らがこのまま、良い意味でのイギリスのジメジメサウンドを推し進めて行くかは、分からないがイメージを固められずに進化して行くには良い手法に感じる。
上手くいったらU2みたいに長生きバンドになれるかもよん。
プレイ力もあるしメロディも良いから、歌詞がもっと聴いている人に、頭で直ぐに浮かぶようなストレートさが出たら、最高なバンドになるだろう。
強いて言うなら、華がないのが気になるLyra。
それは年月が経てば変わる可能性があるから期待しています(о´∀`о)
暑くてムシムシして嫌な日は、Circa Wavesの【Wake Up】を聴いて、暑さを撃退しちゃいましょ。
ヒンヤリした夜みたいな、
雨降りの後のような濡れたようなサウンドが、きっと貴方の体温を下げてくれるだろう。

Formation
Shudall met both Rourke and Plummer through mutual friends at Liverpool Sound City in 2013, meeting Falconer not long after at the same festival where he worked as a stage manager. During the summer and autumn of 2013 the band played several short UK tours, which included some secret shows.
In a July 2014 interview in Paris, Joe Falconer stated regarding the band name’s origin, “Kieran wrote the demo for “Young Chasers”, recorded it and uploaded it to SoundCloud in one day. As he was uploading it he needed a name and it was the first thing that came into his head in that split second. “
Debut single and Young Chasers EP (2013–2014)
On 2 December 2013, the band released their debut single “Get Away/Good For Me”, a double A-side on Transgressive Recordshandled by Jen Long’s Kissibility label. In February 2014 Zane Lowe played the band’s second single “Stuck in My Teeth” as his Hottest Record in the World. The band opened the NME Awards Tour in March 2014, which also included Temples, Interpol and Royal Blood. On 10 June 2014 Circa Waves released their Young Chasers EP on Virgin Records in the USA. A Japanese edition was released on 2 July 2014.
Also during 2014 they supported The 1975 on tour around the UK.
Circa Waves performed at various festivals during the summer of 2014, including Hurricane and Southside Festivals in Germany, Latitude Festival, T-in the Park, Glastonbury Festival, and Splendour in the Grass (Australia). They also performed at Arenal Sound (Spain), Summersonic in Japan, and at Reading and Leeds Festival at the end of August 2014.[7]
The band also supported The Libertines in September 2014.
Young Chasers (2014–present)
The band released their debut album Young Chasers on 30 March 2015 and performed at a number of festivals, including Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds and Boardmasters.
In October 2015, the band toured the UK, including a sold out date at O2 Academy Brixton.
Different Creatures (2016–present)
Circa Waves announced their second album Different Creatures on 24 November 2016, releasing the first single from the album “Wake Up” the same day.
The second single from the album, “Fire That Burns”, was released on 26 January 2017. The album was released on 10 March 2017.
