2019年6月6日Dr.John が亡くなった。
おとぼけ＆ジョークに包まれた彼のサウンドには、必ず辛辣な歌詞が付いて回る。
ブギーにブードゥー、ブルーズにR&Bを、リズミカルなピアノに乗せて南部生まれの彼が歌うとリアルであり、聴いたものたちは、自然と笑顔になって手拍子を取りたくなるだろう。
この世の終わりを喜劇にして見せてくれる語り部、Dr.John に今夜は敬意を表して紹介しよう。
今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのら、アメリカ合衆国ルイジアナ州ニューオリンズ出身のミュージシャン Dr. John ドクター・ジョン（本名Malcolm John Rebennack Jr.、1941年11月21日 – 2019年6月6日）。
ドクター・ジョンとは19世紀のニューオーリンズにいたブードゥー教の司祭の名のことだ。

1950年代からMac Rebennack マック・レベナックの名でギタリストとして活動していたが、1961年、フロリダ州のモーテルで友人のミュージシャンのロニー・バロンをかばって左手を撃たれ、薬指が不自由になりギタリストを断念。これを機にオルガン、ピアノを覚え始めDr.Lyraです生まれる。
その後ロサンゼルスへ渡り、作曲家などの活動を経て1967年に『Gris Gris グリ・グリ』でデビュー。
濃厚なR&Bのセンスとニューオーリンズならではのブードゥー教文化を背景にしたサイケデリックな音楽性はキワモノだが、「アイ・ウォーク・オン・ギルデッド・スプリンターズ」は、後にハンブル・パイやポール・ウェラーにカヴァーされたり、The Rolling Stones のツアー参加など、同業者達に愛される個性的ミュージシャンとして独自のスタイルを極めて行った。
グラミー賞を５回も受賞する凄さと変わり者の両面を持つDr.Johnの歌声は優しい。

Malcolm John Rebennack (November 20, 1941 – June 6, 2019), better known by his stage name Dr. John, was an American singer and songwriter. His music combined blues, pop, jazz, boogie woogie and rock and roll.
Active as a session musician from the late 1950s until his death, he gained a following in the late 1960s after the release of his album Gris-Gris and his appearance at the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music. He performed a lively, theatrical stage show inspired by medicine shows, Mardi Grascostumes and voodoo ceremonies. Rebennack recorded more than 20 albums and in 1973 produced a top-10 hit, “Right Place, Wrong Time”.
The winner of six Grammy Awards, Rebennack was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by singer John Legend in March 2011. In May 2013, Rebennack received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from Tulane University

格好良さと、人生の泥沼から這い上がって来た男の強さを感じるサウンド。
それに、全世界への社会批判をストレートに表現した歌詞(人によっては不愉快にとられるかもしれない歌詞だ)が、彼の言いたいことを如実に表していると感じたので、Dr.Johnを送り出すには良い曲かな、と思い選びました。
だだ、この【Revolution】はDr.Johnの沢山ある楽曲の中では異色というか、かなりお洒落で洗練されたサウンドだと思う。
初期の彼の作品は、もろVoo Doo色が強くて、もっと泥臭い。
そして、サウンドの明暗が激しい。
明るい曲はとことん明るく、ニューオーリンズの路肩でたむろっているランニング着たオッサンやブルーズメンが、互いにジョークを飛ばしているかのように歌う。
逆に暗い歌は、地獄から湧き出たよう。まるで、 Lyraが毎週レビューを書いている【アメリカンホラーストーリー シーズン8黙示録】(第6話ネタバレ感想「オネェと傷心魔女の珍道中 in 地獄」あらすじ)のブードゥー教のパパグアみたいよ。
だから、初期や中期の作品にしようかと迷いましたが、今日選ぶならば、Dr.Johnが言いたかった内容がわかりやすい曲であり、尚且つ、単純にカッコイイ曲の方が良いかな、と思い【Revolution】が一番洗練されていて歌詞が過激だがらこれにしましたよ。
きっと「カッコイイDr.Johnを紹介してくれよー」とJohnもピアノ弾きながら言いそうだからね。

1967年に『グリ・グリ』でデビューしたDr.Johnは、この時からVoo Doo 教をイメージしたファッションやサウンドを押し出すことで、自分のブルーズを世界へと発信し表現して行く。

1972年の『ガンボ』はニューオーリンズの古いポピュラー音楽を蘇らせた試みとして高い評価を受けた。
この年にRolling Stones 『メイン・ストリートのならず者』にバック・コーラスでゲスト参加。
1973年『イン・ザ・ライト・プレイス』からのシングル「ライト・プレイス・ロング・タイム」は、全米9位の成功を収める。
1976年11月月25日 The Band の解散コンサートにゲスト参加し、その時の模様は、映画『ラスト・ワルツ』でも紹介された。
『イン・ア・センチメンタル・ムード』（1989年）収録曲「メイキン・フーピー!」は、グラミー賞の最優秀ジャズ・ボーカル・パフォーマンス賞に輝き、彼にとって初のグラミー受賞となった。

1999年、ドクター・ジョンがゲスト参加したB.B.キングのアルバム『レット・ザ・グッド・タイムス・ロール〜ザ・ミュージック・オブ・ルイ・ジョーダン』がリリースされる。収録された「Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby?」で、キングと共にグラミー賞の最優秀ポップ・コラボレーション・ウィズ・ボーカル賞を受賞。
2005年、故郷ニューオーリンズがハリケーン・カトリーナにより甚大な被害を受けたのに伴い、同年11月にチャリティEP『Sippiana Hericane』をリリース。
2008年のアルバム『シティ・ザット・ケア・フォーガット』もカトリーナ後のニューオーリンズを題材とした作品で、第51回グラミー賞において最優秀コンテンポラリー・ブルース・アルバム賞を受賞し、自身5度目のグラミー受賞となった。
その後も精力的に活動を続け、ニューオーリンズの音楽文化を体現する存在として尊敬を集めている。スタジオ・ミュージシャンとしても幅広く活躍し、共演者はカーリー・サイモン、ジェシ・エド・デイヴィス、リンゴ・スター、プロフェッサー・ロングヘア、ジョニー・ウィンター、ダーティー・ダズン・ブラス・バンド他多数。
2011年にはロックの殿堂入りをしている
2013年の第55回グラミー賞では、アルバム『ロックト・ダウン』で最優秀ブルース・アルバム賞を受賞し、自身6度目のグラミー受賞を果たした。
2019年6月6日、心臓発作のため77歳で死去。

日本時間ではDr.Johnがなくなったのは、今日6月7日になるが、いまだに信じられない。
どことなく彼は不死身な気がしていたからだ。
それこそ、魔術で平気で100歳超えしそうだと思っていたくらい。
ニューオーリンズに生まれ、ニューオーリンズで育ち、ニューオーリンズを愛した男。
ギャングのような生活をしながら、音楽の道を続け、世間の表裏を知り尽くした男、それがDr.JohnだとLyraは思って来た。
だが、彼の曲を聴いて行くうちに、自分の住む世界を愛しているから歌詞にするのだとわかって来た。
彼は辛辣な歌詞で社会批判をして歌うことで、自身が考える社会のあり方や、理想の世界を叶えたいために、敢えて汚い社会を皮肉たっぷり歌ったのではないだろうか？
ニューオーリンズの裏社会を知っているからこそ、虐げられているColored やスラムに住む人たちに焦点を当てて、作品にすることで聴いた人達に、疑問を問いかけ問題提起したかったのではないか？と思う。
それは全てニューオーリンズのため、

『白い呪術師』それは、Dr.Johnが呼ばれているあだ名みたいなもの。
見た目や妖しいboogie Woogieで歌うからだろう。
でも、LyraにはR&B やBlues, Rock,Funkという魔術を使っていたのだと思う。
彼ほど、ニューオーリンズの街を愛し続けてきた男はいない。ハリケーンカトリーナで被災した人々のためにアルバムをリリースして寄付をしたり、ブルーズやファンク・サウンドに溢れる街を救おうとしたのは、その地元愛に他ならないでしょう。
ブルーズに魅せられたものは、皆New Orleansを愛する。
未だにブードゥー教が行われていたり、一日中ブルーズやロックやジャズやファンクが流れている街。
時間が止まっているかのように、伝統が今でも続いている。
それだからこそ、ニューオーリンズの街は未だに生き続け、新しい音楽の発信地としてもパワフルな街なのかもしれない。
それは、まるでDr.Johnの曲のようだ。
古いブルーズやJazzを混ぜ込んだサウンドに、RockやFunkをスパイスに入れてくるDr.Johnのサウンドは個性的で独自の魅力を放っている。
まるで、New Orleansの町のように、これからも愛され続けて行くだろう。
Dr.Johnのことだから、時々、セッションしに満月の夜はNew Orleansの酒場に舞い降りてくるかもね。

- Dr. John was featured in the third episode of the HBO series Treme, as well as three episodes of the second season and the final episode of the fourth season, playing himself in all of them.
- Dr. John was the inspiration for Jim Henson’s Muppet character, Dr. Teeth.
