良くお買い物巡りをするLyra。先日サーフショップで物色中に、ああでもないこうでもないアドバイスしまくって騒いでいたら、この曲がかかった。その途端、気持ちが上がり「うわっ、懐かしい！」と叫んで皆で歌いまくり。
オマケにこの歌詞がもう、今の気持ちのツボというか、Jimmy Eat Worldのメンバー自身が自分達を奮い立たせるために歌っている歌詞だから、久しぶりに聴いて涙が出そうになったの。運命だわ。

“The Middle” is a song by American rock band Jimmy Eat World. It was released in October 2001 as the second single of their fourth album Bleed American. It was a number-five hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 2002 and reached the top 50 in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. The song was a breakthrough hit for Jimmy Eat World, who had self-financed the recording of the Bleed American album after being dropped by Capitol Records in 1999.

疾走感ある青春ソングって所が、明るめヴァージョンのEmoとして王道なんだけど、メッセージが力強くて前向きな点が、バカ売れした要因だと思う。
否定的な事や、この世からいなくなることばかり歌うEmoバンドとは、一味違うところがJimmy Eat Worldの曲が、色々なジャンルのアーティスト達にカヴァーされる理由の一つだ。
ミュージックビデオは、下着姿の若者をフィーチャーしたプール・パーティーとアメリカらしいシチュエーション。これは、ポール・フェドア監督によるもの。
MTV、特にトータルリクエストライブで多くのヘビロテをされたから、この曲のファンがいかに多いかが良く分かるエピソードだ。
Jimmy Eat Worldのメンバーがカメオ出演しているのも面白い。彼らがガレージバンドをしているプールパーティに、服を着た10代の少年（ジョシュ・ケレハー）が来て、バンド以外の全員が下着姿で、 群衆の多くは彼が来たのも理解しているのに、主人公のこの少年は除外されていて、寂しそうにしている。誰も話しかけてこないし、孤独な少年は皆んなにジロジロ見られていたこともあり、最後には、仕方なく皆と同じ姿になるべく服を脱ぎ始めてしまう。
だが、彼がいるクローゼットの中で同じことをしている10代の少女がいて目が合うと、服を脱がずに2人は服を着たままパーティーから出て、お互いに腕を組んでその場から去るのだ、歌が終わるように。自分らしくいられない場所からオサラバするように。

最悪からの脱却
【The Middle】は、2001年10月に4枚目のアルバム『Bleed American』のセカンドシングルとしてリリースされ、2002年のUSビルボードホット100で5位ヒットを記録し、トップに躍り出た。 オーストラリア、アイルランド、ニュージーランド、イギリスとランクインするビッグヒットとなった。
だがリリース前に彼らは、最悪なことが起きていた。1999年に今まで契約を交わしていた、キャピトルレコードにドロップされたのだ。
その後にこの【Bleed American】のアルバムのレコーディングをするために自己資金で賄ったから、Jimmy Eat World とって、この曲【The Middle】は画期的であり、命を(バンド生命)を経たれずに済んだゴールデンキーの曲なのだ。
彼らのセカンドアルバムである『StaticPrevails』は1996年にわずか10,000枚を売り上げ、CapitolRecordsは優先順位の変更のために1999年にバンドを削除することを決定した経緯が嘘みたいな話だろう。
Vocal兼ギタリストのJim Adkinsは、、ダラス・オブザーバーに次のように説明している。
「【TheMiddle】は、「取り残されたり、見下されたりした」と感じた主人公が、「まだ自分を決めつけないで(ダメだと決めつけるな、と言う意味) という歌詞でバンドの試練の時を反映しているんだよ。」
その思いは確実に前向きなパワーソングにぬっている。聴いているだけで元気が出てくるもの…。
彼らはアルバムのレコーディングに資金を提供することを決定し、物事を維持することにして、以前のレコードで行ったように、実験ではなく新しいレコードでは、物事をシンプルに打ち出したのが良かったんだと思う。
その証拠に「自分たちの新しいものについては、実際の実験を行うことにより、自分自身に挑戦するのではなく、非常に単純になることによって自分自身に挑戦するという、逆の方向に進んだんだ」と当時を振り返っている。
レコーディングが完了すると、Jimmy Eat World は、ドリームワークスレコードと契約した。このアルバム『Bleed American』は2001年半ばにリリースされ、タイトルトラックがリードシングルとなったアルバムだ。しかし、9月11日の後、アルバムのタイトルは『Jimmy Eat World』に変更され、リードシングルはビルボードホットモダンロックトラックのトップ20に到達したものの、エアプレイに勝つことは出来なかった。
【The Middle】の影響力
この【The Middle】は、人気のある曲だ。アップテンポながら、チャラチャラした内容の無いものと違い、明確なメッセージが有るところが聞き手を掴む。これがBGMとしても効果的なのだろう。
そのため、様々な場所で使用、引用されており、ビデオゲームのロックバンド2、ギターヒーローオンツアー：ディケイド、ギターヒーローワールドツアーで使用されている。それ以外にもアメリカのテレビシリーズ『Black List 』のシーズン4エピソードで取り上げられている。
アメリカの人気シンガーソングライターのTaylor Swift ( → 【You Belong With Me】 和訳 Can Bleachers Be Steady? 恋心)は、2016年4月18日にデビューしたAppleMusicのコマーシャルでこの曲をリップシンクしていたし、テレビ番組『TheMiddle』のパイロットエピソードでも使用されていたり、映画『Zoom』と『TheNewGuy』の予告編でも使われている。

Jim Adkins はオルタナティヴ・プレスとのインタビューで
「本当にまだ初期のソーシャルメディア実験の時代だったのに、俺たちはメールアドレスを持っていたんだ。それは、ウェブサイトが主流になる前の、インターネットへの最初の冒険みたいなものだったな。 それは、私書箱を介してバンドを書く電子版のようなものだったんだ。 パンクが足りなかったから、学校に通う気がしなかったと書いた女の子がいたんだけど、 (この曲は) 彼女に向けられたようなものだと思う。 人々は「パンクロック」の意味について議論するのが大好きだけど、誰もが同意するかもしれない基本的な信条は、オープンマインドのレベルだと思う。 パンクと同一視していたこれらの人々が、パンクが足りないという理由で誰かに心を閉ざし、「彼らはそれを理解していないので、心配する必要はない」と感じたのは面白いと思ったんだ。」
そして、この曲がレコードレーベルから削除されたことに対する反応であるかどうかを尋ねられたとき、Jimは、

良くありがちなのは、奇を衒ったやり方に走りがち、つまり冒険しがちなのだが、彼らは新しいことや実験的な事をやるよりも、近い目標に狙いを定めて、今まで通りにやっていたのが功を制したのだ。

Frontman Jim Adkins shared in an interview with Alternative Press:
Back in the days of really early social media experiments, we had an email address. That was our first venture into the internet, before websites were a main thing. It was like an electronic version of writing the band [via] post office box. There was a girl who wrote in saying that she was not feeling like she fit in at her school, because she wasn’t punk enough. I guess [the song] is sort of directed at her. People love to argue about what “punk rock” means, but I think a basic tenet that everyone might agree on is a level of open-mindedness. I just found it funny that these people who were identifying with punk would be closed-minded towards someone for not being punk enough, and just felt like, “They don’t get it, and you shouldn’t worry about them.”
When asked in an interview with Alternative Press whether the song was a reaction to being dropped from their record label, Jim Adkins answered:
Not at all. From our perspective, it was just a continuation of what we were doing. We flew pretty low under the radar at Capitol. When were “on the label,” and when they had let us go, we didn’t notice anything [different]. There wasn’t any major shift from our perspective, in how we operated or what we were doing.
The song’s video (directed by Paul Fedor) featuring young people in underwear received plenty of play on MTV, especially on Total Request Live.
The music video features a fully clothed teenage boy (Josh Keleher) who attends a pool party at which Jimmy Eat World is playing, only to find everyone, except the band, in their underwear. Much of the crowd is making out, but the boy is excluded. Finally, out of frustration, he starts to strip to be like the others, only to bump into a teenage girl doing the same thing in the closet he is in. The kids keep their clothes on and leave the party, arms around each other, as the song concludes.
The track is featured in the videogames Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero On Tour: Decades and Guitar Hero World Tour.
The song is featured in a season 4 episode of the American television series The Blacklist.
Singer Taylor Swift lip-synched the song in an Apple Music commercial that debuted on April 18, 2016.
The song was used in the TV show The Middle‘spilot episode.
The song is featured in the movie Zoom and in the trailer for The New Guy.
