今年2022年になったばかりなのに、もう10年くらい一気に時が経ったような気分になって居る。何故なら、有名アーティストや自分が良く聞いてきた人達が、たてつづけに亡くなって行くからだ。
勿論プライベートで忙しいこともあり、あちこちに飛び回っているために、頭の中が情報過多になっているのに、周りの世界がスローに動いているように感じるのもある。
頭がずうっと回転してる中で、知っている人物がなくなるのを見ると、一瞬、漆黒の穴を覗いたような空虚感に襲われる。
この人が亡くなったのを聞いても、時は止まらず未だ動き続けている。
だが彼が歌う世界の仰々しさ(良い意味で)や、やり過ぎなほどの絢爛さは、もう見ることが出来ない。そう思うと、この世がつまらなくて簡素に見えて来た。
今の世の中とは逆行したかのようなグリッターな空間を身に纏っていたMeat Loaf。
見かけによらない(良い意味)ハイトーンヴォイスの美しさ。

今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、アメリカ合衆国テキサス州ダラス出身のアーティスト、ロックシンガー、俳優の Meat Loaf ミート・ローフ(1947年9月27日 – 2022年1月20日）。

I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” is a song written by Jim Steinman, and recorded by Meat Loaf with Lorraine Crosby. The song was released in August 1993 as the first single from the album Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell. The last six verses feature Crosby, who was credited only as “Mrs. Loud” in the album notes. She does not appear in the video, in which her vocals are lip-synched by Dana Patrick. Meat Loaf promoted the single with American singer Patti Russo.

アレアレ言っている派手派手Rock
「全くサラ・ブライトマンが歌いそうな歌だな」と初めて聴いた時に思った。そしてMeat Loafのことは、【The Rocky Horror Picture Show】で、既に知っていたので、彼らしいミュージカル風の派手派手な曲だと思ったし、曲に似合わず歌詞が意味深でウブな感じだから「狙ってる曲だ」と思った。そして「俺は、あれはしないからな」とずーっと主人公(Meat Loaf)が言っている「アレって、アレ？」なんてぼんやり考えていたのも覚えている。
あれからラジオで(日本のではない)流れるたびに「アレってアレか?アレでしょ？何なのよ〜？」なんて考えたり、ただ口ずさんだり、、、(アレアレ言ってるなw)
そうつまり、今まで派手派手Rockに気を取られて全く深く考えなかったが、改めて今、聞いたら、これはっきり言って『アレ』=男女の営みをを「やるか、やらないか」で男女が言い合ってるだけ曲なんだわ(笑)。
「全く、大の大人がそんな事で揉めて、何なん？」となったLyraは…おかしいですか?(笑)
製作秘話
【I’d Do Anything for Love（But I Wo n’t Do That）】は、Jim Steinman が書いた曲で、Meat Loaf ミートローフがロレーヌ・クロスビーと一緒にレコーディングし、アルバム『Bat Out of Hell II：Back into Hell』の最初のシングルとして1993年8月にリリースされた。
最後の6節は、女性が歌い、ビデオでは、彼女のボーカルが Danna Patrick によって口パクされている。ご本人さんは登場していない。プロモーション活動では、アメリカの歌手パティ・ルッソとシングルを宣伝したと言う。
因みに歌詞はアルバムヴァージョンを日本語に訳した。ビデオは、ラジオなど用に短くなっている。

Meat Loafについて
本名 Marvin Lee Aday マーヴィン・リー・アーディー。テキサス州ダラス生まれ。少年時代はアメリカンフットボールで鳴らし、タックルが得意だったことから、現在のニックネームとなるミートローフとなる。
1960年代はロック・ミュージカル『The Hair ヘアー』に出演したりなどしていたが（役名は不明）、1971年にモータウンのサブ・レーベル「レア・アース」からアルバム『Stoney & Meatloaf』でデビュー。
1970年代前半は主に俳優として活動し、オフ・ブロードウェイのミュージカル『Rainbow (in New York)』や、ジム・スタインマンが音楽を担当したミュージカル『More Than You Deserve』に出演。また、映画『ロッキー・ホラー・ショー』（1975年）にも出演した。

1976年、Ted Nugent のアルバム『ハード・ギター爆撃機 (Free-for-All)』に参加。
1977年に、ジム・スタインマンの作詞・作曲、Todd Harry Rundgren のプロデュースによるアルバム『Bat Out of Hell 地獄のロック・ライダー』を発表し、全米および全英チャートで長い年月にわたってチャートにランクインされ（イギリスでは9位、アメリカでは14位）、起死回生の作品となった。またこのアルバムからシングルカットされた、【66％の誘惑 (Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad)】もビルボードのシングルチャートの11位を記録するヒット。
『Bat Out of Hell』は、2005年には世界で最も売れたアルバムCDの6位（3700万枚）となって、その後も売り上げを伸ばしている。販売総数は約4300万枚とされ、史上最も売れたアルバムの一つなのだ。
その後、Stainmanとの不和が生じるが、以後も彼の手による曲を次々とリリース。
1993年にはアルバム『地獄のロック・ライダーII〜地獄への帰還』を発表、今度はビルボード誌のアルバムチャートで1位を獲得、シングルカットされたのが、この【I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That) 愛にすべてを捧ぐ】も全米シングルチャート1位を記録し、1993年のグラミー賞を受賞。
1999年にはDavid Fincher デヴィッド・フィンチャー監督、Brad Pitt 、Edward Norton 主演の映画『Fight Club』に、ロバート”ボブ”ポールスン役で出演。その他、映画『The Mightyマイ・フレンド・メモリー』にも出演。俳優として活躍の場を広げていた。
2022年1月20日、74歳で死去。一部報道で、新型コロナウイルスに感染していたと言われている。
【I’d Do Anything For Love(I Won’t Do That)】について
先に触れたように、この曲は非常に長い為、短いシングル・ヴァージョンとラジオヴァージョン、ロング・ヴァージョンなどの編集がたくさんある。
曲は、回転するオートバイのエンジン音に聞こえるギターから始まる。 Roy Bittanのピアノは、ギターやドラムと一緒に演奏を始め、ボーカルは1:50ポイントから開始。オープニングボーカルにはピアノとバックボーカルが伴います。その後、バンド（主にピアノ）がメインのメロディーを20秒間演奏すると、曲の音量が大きくなると言う、美女と野獣みたいな映像にぴったりな壮大な感じ。
インストルメンタルセクションは最初の詩とコーラスに続き、45秒以上続き、ピアノがタイトルのメロディーを演奏し、トッドラングレン、ロリードッド、カシムスルトンによるギターと言葉のないバックグラウンドボーカルが伴われ、まさに豪華絢爛だ。
歌詞で、Meat Loaf がコンサートで元のフレーズを歌うこともあったが、レコーディングでは「セックス、ドラッグ、ロックンロール」というフレーズが「セックスとドラムとロックンロールの神に祈る日もある」に変更されていた。
以前、Bonnie Taylor がアルバム『Speed Of Night』で録音した【Getting So Excited】（アラン・グリューナー作）の曲には、「愛のためなら何でもするが、それはしない」という歌詞が使われていた。これもMeat LoafをプロデュースしたJim Stainmanがプロデュースしたのだ。

歌詞についてLyrics
この曲には奇妙な歌詞が沢山ある。大体、歌詞の始まりが、「And」という単語で始まるということも不思議。 「and」のような接続詞で文を始めることは非常にまれ。それによりMeat Loaf がすでにずっと歌い始めているような印象を与えるのだ。その前に最初の「そして」歌が始まってさえいないので、それは不可能だ。それを気にする人も多いと思うが、この仰々しいまでのミュージカル調のサウンドからして、Lyraは劇として楽曲を創作したからだと思う。
つまり、ある場面、ある何幕か、の曲なのだ。Meat Loafが永遠に悩み愛を求めてるかのような存在にしたかったのではないか？物語の人物のように。だから、ビデオが美人と野獣めいているのだと思う。
それならば、andから始まってもおかしくない。永遠に繰り返している欲望の歌なのだろう。
もう1つの奇妙なことは、クラシックなミュージックビデオでは、曲が始まる前に次のテキストが表示されること。 「私は彼女を見つけるために何年にもわたって宇宙を旅してきました。たまに最後まで行くのはほんの始まりに過ぎません。」これも、シネマのような演劇風にしたいエフェクトなんだと感じる。
あと、2行目の歌詞は、Meat Loafの天国と地獄の数十年のメタファーを継続したものだ。アルバム『Bat Out Of The Hell 2』の最初のトラックとしてリリースしたこの曲の歌詞に、この歌詞を入れ込む事で、リスナーを彼の以前の受賞歴のある過去のアルバム『Bat Out Of The Hell』に引っ張って行くみたいだ。
そしてタイトルが1番、意味がわからんと問題視(笑)されているのも何ともおかしな話だが、これは「俺は愛のために何でもします（しかし俺ははそれをしないよ）」と言う意味なのだが、聞く人たちの多くが、歌詞の主人公が実際に愛のために何をしないのかを、はっきりと述べないから意味が訳がわからん、と言っている。ごもっともな意見だ。だって、一度も何をしたくないのか、又それを実際に「したか？或いはしなていないのか？」を言わずに終わるからだ。
まあ、これはLyraが和訳した歌詞をもう一度よ〜く見ると、彼がしたことがわかると思う。
Meat Loafは実際、「今の気分を決して忘れない」だろうし、彼は「俺たちがずっと行かなければ、決して自分を許さない、今夜」とまで歌っている。やる事、やりたい訳だ(笑)。
確かに、彼は「俺が君と一緒にやるよりも、うまくやることは決してないだろう」と言っていて、その後に女性歌手のロレーヌ・クロスビーが曲終わり近くにやって来て、2人のコール&レスポンスで、彼は物事をさらに明確にしていく。… 誰もそれらのWon’t がないという事実から、Stainman が作詞作曲で十分に突き通す配慮しなかったか、あるいは、2人をやらせて(笑)あげたのかもしれない。

Meat Loafは、「それは何ですか？」という質問をよくされたようだ。彼が尋ねられる最も人気のある質問の1つが、この曲への問いだった。
各節は、人が愛のために行うであろう二つのことを述べているのは、お分かりだろう。その後に、彼がしないであろう一つのことを述べている。
タイトルフレーズの繰り返しは、彼が「それをしない」ことを再確認している。 「それ」についてのそれぞれの言及は、彼が同じ節で以前にした特定の約束への言及だ。
曲の終わりに、女性は彼がする2つのことを予測する：「貴方は次に進む時が来たのが分かるでしょう」と「貴方はぐちゃぐちゃになるでしょう」。これらの両方に対して、男性は「俺はそれをしない！」と強調して答えて行く。

VH1プログラムの初期のエピソードであるPop-upVideoは、曲のビデオの最後に「Meat Loaf が愛のために何をしないかは、今日でも謎のままです。」 「歌詞は、恋愛の名の下に何かをすることを誓うロマンスを消費した恋人を描写することによって、サスペンスを構築しています。それは、彼が指定しない不思議なことです。」と主張した。
つまり、「リスナーが自分の考え、価値観、懸念を、誤解された歌詞を使って曲の意味に投影する方法の啓発的な良い例」であり、聞き手によって広がりが増す曲なのだ。
個人的に思うに、ある種の秘め事の共有になっていると感じるし、この曖昧さが、一人一人が想像することで、私的な曲にもなるのだと思う。それは秘め事の共有を通してこの曲を自分の近しい曲にし、より愛着が湧く効果を生んでいると思う。
だから大ヒットしたし、今もラジオでかかり、リクエストされる曲なのだ。それはMeat Loafの派手派手な歌い方や、演劇めいたパフォーマンスやMVや俳優業などの表現が合わさり、また相乗効果で聞くものを自分の世界へと引き摺り込む威力を増して行くのだ。
しかしこれだけ大ヒットしている曲を持ち、笑えるキャラもあり、ロックの殿堂入りもしていて、The Rocky Horror Show等、ミュージカルから俳優までこなせるMeat Loafが、日本で全く人気がないのが不思議だ。

Written by Jim Steinman for Meatloaf, “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” was Meatloaf’s comeback song and the lead single for Bat Out Of Hell II: Back into Hell. A power ballad to the max, “I’d Do Anything” heralded the comeback of Meat Loaf and his collaborations with Steinman. The song is one of Meat Loaf’s most successful to date, and at the time of its release hit number one on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart. “I’d Do Anything” also won the Grammy Award for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance in 1994 at the 36th Annual Grammy Awards.
The timings in this article refer to the original album version. There are many shorter single and radio edits.
The song opens with a guitar played to sound like a revving motorcycle. Roy Bittan’s piano begins to play along with the guitars and drums. The vocals begin at the 1:50 point. The opening vocals are accompanied by piano and backing vocals. The song then becomes much louder as the band, predominantly piano, plays the main melody for twenty seconds. An instrumental section follows the first verse and chorus, lasting over 45 seconds, with piano playing the title melody, accompanied by guitar and wordless background vocals by Todd Rundgren, Rory Dodd and Kasim Sulton. The lead vocals recommence with another verse. The phrase “sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll” was changed to “Some days I just pray to the god of sex and drums and rock and roll” on the recording, although Meat Loaf would occasionally sing the original phrase in concert.
Earlier, the lyrics “I’d do anything for love, but I won’t do that” had been used in the song “Getting So Excited” (written by Alan Gruner), recorded by Bonnie Tyler in the album Faster Than the Speed of Night, which was produced by Steinman.
What is “that”?
Meat Loaf claimed that the question, “What is ‘that’?” was one of the most popular questions he would be asked.
Each verse mentions two things that the man would do for love, followed by one thing that he will not do. The title phrase repetition reasserts that he “won’t do that.” Each mention of “that” is a reference to the particular promise that he made earlier in the same verse. At the song’s conclusion, the woman predicts two things that he will do: “You’ll see that it’s time to move on”, and “You’ll be screwing around.” To both of these, the male emphatically responds, “I won’t do that!”
In his 1998 VH1 Storytellers special, Meat Loaf even explained it on stage using a blackboard and a pointer.
Meat Loaf believed that the lyrics were unambiguous, but Steinman predicted that they would cause confusion. An early episode of the VH1 program Pop-up Video made this claim at the end of the song’s video: “Exactly what Meat Loaf won’t do for love remains a mystery to this day.” A reviewer writing for AII Music commented that “The lyrics build suspense by portraying a romance-consumed lover who pledges to do anything in the name of love except ‘that,’ a mysterious thing that he will not specify.” Frank O’day says the lyrics provide “an enlightening example of how listeners project their own thoughts, values, and concerns onto the meaning of the song with misconstrued lyrics.”

There are so many odd things about this song, the first of which is that it starts with the word “And.” It’s very rare to begin a sentence with a conjunction like “and.” It gives the impression that Meatloaf has already begun singing, which is impossible, because before that first “and” the song has not even started!
Another strange thing is that, in the classic music video, before the song starts the following text appears:
“I have travelled across the universe through the years to find her. Sometimes going all the way is just a start.”
“I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” is often referred to as a song in which the writer never actually states what he won’t do for love – but a look at the lyrics reveals that he did state it.
Meat Loaf will, in fact, “never forget the way you feel right now”; he’ll “never forgive myself if we don’t go all the way / Tonight”; indeed, he’ll “never do it better than I do it with you”. And then the female singer, Lorraine Crosby, comes in near the end, and he makes things clearer still…
Granted, the fact that nobody ever registers those Won’t’s means that Steinman wasn’t clear enough in his songwriting – although perhaps him not being clearer was, in fact, part of the joke.

Michael Bay directed the music video. He also directed the videos for “Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer than They Are” and “Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through”, also from Bat Out of Hell II. Filming took place in Los Angeles County, California in July 1993; the opening chase was filmed at Chávez Ravine, with the interior mansion scenes filmed at Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. The cinematographer was Daniel Pearl, particularly known for filming The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in 1973. Pearl says that this video “is one of my personal all-time favorite projects… I think the cinematography is pure, and it tells a story about the song.”
The video is based on Beauty and the Beast and The Phantom of the Opera. Bob Keane did Meat Loaf’s make-up, which took up to two hours to apply. The make-up was designed to be simple and scary, yet “with the ability to make him sympathetic.” The shoot went over budget, and was filmed in 90 °F (32 °C) heat, across four days. According to one executive, it “probably had the budget of Four Weddings and a Funeral. It is the abridged seven-minute version, rather than the twelve-minute album version.
The actress in the video, Dana Patrick, is miming to Crosby’s vocals; she did the same for Patti Russo’s vocals in the 1995 song “I’d Lie for You (And That’s the Truth)”.,According to the captions aired on Pop-Up Video, Patrick received several offers for record deals after the video aired, from executives who assumed she was actually singing in the video.
