先に解説さてように、この曲でメインで話している語り手は、人間として描かれている支配者のドラッグ(クスリ)である。あとでチラッと対象者の男が話し始めるが、曲の殆どをドラッグが話しているの。

出たしの”End of passion play, crumbling away I’m your source of self-destruction” は、相手の男(人間)が、もう終わっている人間だから、もう死にかけているわけですな。そんな「もう人生終わっている(笑)」人間である薬物中毒者に、これから何が起きるかを伝えているのだ。

この手の人間たちは、人生終わりかけているにも関わらず、自分を更に殺し、自分の人生を台無しにし、自己破滅の道へと導く何かに依存するように益々なっていくのだ。

この歌を通して、歌い手(James)が、麻薬として直接、対象者に話す(歌う)訳で、ますます麻薬は擬人化されていくのだ。彼がコントロールしていて、比喩的にこの男の命(人生)の紐(まあ、手綱と言った方が日本人らしい気がするが)を引っ張っているので、ヤク(ドラッグ)は、は「操り人形のご主人様(達人)」なのだ。

途中に出てくるフレーズで、体内に入る描写があるが、薬が血流に入ると死はどんどん近づき、早々と死に至る。最終的に人生(命)を守るを台無しにするのだ。

中毒者は、もう1つ別のを(ドラッグを)貰えば十分だと考えている、、、だが「もっと」と言うものは、決してそうではないだ。悲惨な話だ。

あとコカインなどの薬は、その効力を確認するために「味見」されることがよくある。コカインは「耐性薬」であり、本来の効果を生み出すにはより多くの薬が必要になる。ドツボにハマるのだ。だから”Tast me’=「味わえ」と言っているの、怖いでしょ?

crawlingとは、直訳は「這う」だが、ここでは、スラングの薬を買うことや、どうやっても止められない、ということがピッタリくるんでありんす。だから、弱くなっていても、這いつくばっていても、薬を買うことになるのだから皮肉なもの。恋しくて恋しくてって感じ。

まあ、ここまで詳しく解説しなくてもいいかな？もう少しやって欲しい?

「Obey」は、依存症に屈し、それが貴方の人生をコントロールすることを意味しているのだが、生命の燃焼は、薬の効果なの。それが貴方の肉体的生活と感情的生活をどのように台無しにするか？という非常に最悪な効力をジワジワと描いているのわけです。

 

 

薬はすべてを引き継いでいく、、、それは、人間が見るすべてであり、その男が考えるすべてであり、それは人間の行動を制御する、、、彼は止めることができず、通常の生活を送ることもできず、薬で彼の人生の目標と夢を達成することができなくなるのだ。もう薬だけが生きる道になってしまう悲惨さ！

2番目にある「鏡の線上の〜」の歌詞は、コカインが、伝統的に剃刀で鏡の上に線状に並べてから鼻で吸い込む、あの作業を指しているのだが、これに補足すると、これが、中毒者が朝に最初に消費するものだから描いているのだ。コカインと言うものは、空腹感を抑える作用があり、この男性は、定期的な朝食を必要とせず、コカインがその代わりになるから、この歌詞が生まれたのだろう。鼻水垂らしてゲロ吐きまくっても、ご飯はいらず、薬だけなのだよ。

因みに「マスター」とは、歌の中で擬人化された麻薬を指しているのは説明したが、この麻薬がMaster Of Puppetsと呼ばれ、麻薬中毒者を操っているのだ。この聖歌は、中毒者が彼の人生を支配している麻薬である彼の「マスター」に呼びかけることを意味している。

そしてコーラスの「マスター」の叫びは、別として、最後の方にある「FixMe!!!」を含む歌詞は、コカイン中毒の男性(人間)の声であり、歌われる歌の中でも唯一の彼の言葉になる。

もちろん、コカインは拮抗薬の擬人化の役割を果たしているし、 最初の部分は、人が薬を飲み始めたとき、彼に独創性を感じさせ、非常に現実的に見えるマスターのための夢を作成してもいる。

だが後に与えられる薬は、全てを破壊するのだ。

コーラス部分にある、男性が聞いている笑い声は、彼の苦しみにより、誰かによって提供されていることを考えると次のどれかだろう。

自虐ネタとしての彼自身 、或いは、彼の奇妙な行動を面白くしている他の誰か、或いは、悪の笑いをしている【Master】か？

曲の終わり方によって裏付けられているように、Masterの可能性が高い。

その曲のラストの笑い声、、、これは、麻薬に乗っ取られ、麻薬の服用者が、ヤクの奴隷になったことを意味している。

これは拷問だ。欲にまみれ逃れられなくなった人間の歌だ。それはドラッグだけではないだろう。それこそ人間の三代欲求もしかり、自己顕示欲や、今流行りの自己肯定感(笑)を高めたいとか言ってる価値なしのものを追い求める使い捨て人間たちの欲も似ている。底なし沼だね〜。それこそ拷問、生き地獄でしょ。

この拷問のために死にたくなり、死にたくなるだけでなく、あなたを危機に瀕させ、その効果は、依存症なだけにあなたを死に近づけるのだ。可哀想に、可哀想に。逃れられない、、、さようなら。

ああ、だが、この悲惨な歌詞とは相反して、今のLyraには、地獄で鳴り響くギター！鮮血のギターが聴こえてくる。

この曲の真ん中のセクションのギターソロは、ハイになること、そしてその後に、ドラッグからのクラッシュ/撤退を表すことを意図しているの。ハイが摩耗し、彼(彼女)が、現実の実現に戻る時期を表すことを目的としている。生きることを取り戻そうとする人間の苦しみ。戦いだ。

それは、まるで世界平和のために命懸けで戦ったEddieのように。あれはピッタリすぎる。

あまりにもマッチしていて、そしてEddie Van HalenのようなLightning 奏法は、ライトニング(稲妻)を呼んでいるようだ。

 

 

それは余りにも凄まじくMetalで Lyraは泣いた！泣きすぎるってくらいに泣いた。

☆おまけ:Stranger ThingsとMetallica

このブログで書いたドラマ【StrangerThings4】の、あべこべの世界で強敵ヴェクナの手下である悪魔のコウモリと対決するシーンで、エディ・マンソンが、Eddie Munsonが、この【Master Of Puppets】をプレイしている。

このドラマ１のハイライトシーンであり、Lyraは大好きなドキドキなギターソロを見事エディが披露し、見事Joseph Quinnが演じきったと思う。

エディ役のJoseph Quinnは、この撮影のためギターを購入。練習しまくった。

因みにJosephは昔ピアノを習っていたから音楽的素養はあるのね〜。でも、ギターは弾いたことがなかったから練習をたくさんしたのだろう。

少なくともソロ以外のすべての演奏ができるようになる必要があったため、撮影の日まで必死に練習したJoseph。

ご存知のように、速弾きだし、複雑なパートがあるため、エイデンが代わりに演奏している。

さらのこの楽曲には、メタリカのベーシスト、ロバート・トゥルヒーヨの17歳の息子、タイ・トゥルヒーヨが、リズムギターとして(追加参加扱いだが) この楽曲に参加している。ロバートが自身Instagramで公表し、こうポストしている。

「さすがは我が息子だ！誇らしいぞ タイ！『ストレンジャー・シングス』で “Master Of Puppets”を演奏したんだ！カーク・ハメットの協力に大感謝！」と。

あと、このEddieがやる【Master Of Puppets】は、大反響を呼び、当のMetallicaのメンバーもシーズン1から子供と一緒に見ていたから大ファンだったらしくて、かなり嬉しかったようだ。

【ストレンジャー・シングス】がシリーズを通し、音楽を番組に取り入れた方法についてダファー兄弟を賞賛し、自分たちの曲がフィーチャーされることに非常に興奮したことを語っている。

さらに最終的なシークエンスに圧倒され、予告編でギターを弾くJosephの手の動きを見ただけで多くのファンが自分たちの曲の名前を言えることに驚かされたそう。

Master of Puppets features dynamic music and thick arrangements. Metallica delivered a more refined approach and performance compared to the previous two albums, with multilayered songs and technical dexterity. This album and its predecessor Ride the Lightning follow a similar track sequencing: both open with an up-tempo song with an acoustic intro, followed by a lengthy title track, and a fourth track with ballad qualitiesAlthough both albums are similarly structured, the musicianship on Master of Puppets is more powerful and epic in scope, with tight rhythms and delicate guitar solos. According to music writer Joel McIver, Master of Puppets introduced a new level of heaviness and complexity in thrash metal, displaying atmospheric and precisely executed songs. Hetfield’s vocals had matured from the hoarse shouting of the first two albums to a deeper, in-control, yet aggressive style. The songs explore themes such as control and the abuse of power. The lyrics describe the consequences of alienation, oppression, and feelings of powerlessness. Author Ryan Moore thought the lyrics depicted “ominous yet unnamed forces of power wielding total control over helpless human subjects”. The lyrics were considered perceptive and harrowing, and were praised for being honest and socially conscious by writer Brock Helander. Referring to the epic proportions of the songs, BBC Music’s Eamonn Stack stated that “at this stage in their careers Metallica weren’t even doing songs, they were telling stories”. The compositions and arrangements benefited from bassist Cliff Burton’s classical training and understanding of harmony.

“Master of Puppets” consists of several riffs with odd meters and a cleanly picked middle section with melodic solo. The song shares a similar structure with “The Four Horsemen” from the band’s first album: two verse-chorus sets lead to a lengthy interlude to another verse-chorus set. The opening and pre-verse sections feature fast downpicked chromatic riffing at around 212 beats per minute in mostly ⁴
₄ time. Every fourth bar of each verse and the outro is cut short by more than a beat; the time signature of these bars is often idealistically analyzed as being ⁵
₈, but it is performed with a delay after the third beat, making it closer to ²¹
₃₂ (^4+4+5+4+4

The lyrical theme is cocaine addiction.

The title track off Master of Puppets is mainly about the effects drugs can have on a person’s life. It is the single most performed song in Metallica’s career, and always provides a great reaction from audiences, as Hetfield will leave the singing of the MASTER! exclamations to the audience (to great effect!).

The guitar riff between the last guitar solo section and final verse was heavily influenced by David Bowie’s song “Andy Warhol,” which Burton and Hammett were big fans of.

Nah, I see it done to different people. Some of the stuff… well, “Master of Puppets” deals pretty much with drugs. How things get switched around, instead of you controlling what you’re taking and doing its drugs controlling you. Like, I went to a party here in S.F., there were all these freaks shooting up and geezin’ and this other girl was real sick.

You’re done, so you’re dying now. The opening line conveys what happens to an addict, they become dependent on something that is at the same time killing them, ruining their life and leading them down a path of self ruin.

Death gets closer and closer as the drugs enter your bloodstream, giving one a rush but ultimately ruining them.

Crawling” refers to buying the drugs and how you can’t stop, so even when you’re weak and crawling, you still buy them. “Obey” means to give in to addiction and let it control your life. Life burning is the effects of the drugs and how it ruins your physical life as well as your emotional life.

Master” refers to the drug, as it is personified in the song, and called the “Master of Puppets”, the puppets being drug addicts. This chant signifies the addict calling to his “Master” which is drugs, as they control his life. You not only want to die because of this torture, but it pushes you to the brink and it’s effects bring you closer to death because of the addiction.

Cocaine is traditionally snorted by arranging it into lines on a mirror with a razor. Because of the addition, this will be the first thing the addicted consume in the morning. As cocaine inhibits hunger, he will have no need for regular breakfast, and the cocaine will substitute that.
