2001年9月11日(火)の朝に、イスラーム過激派テロリスト集団アルカイダによるアメリカへの４回もの協調テロ攻撃= アメリカ同時多発テロ事件が起きた。

米国史上最悪な事件であり、人類史上最悪なテロ事件である。

今見ても信じられないような映像が、悲惨な出来事をより不可思議なものにしていると思う。

特にツインタワーは、余りにも酷すぎて現実味がない映画のように見えてしまう。突っ込んでいく飛行機はリモコンの飛行機で、ビルは作られたLego ブロックか？

だが、あのビルには大勢の人達が逃げきれずにあのままいたこと、爆破されて吹っ飛んだ人、中には高層ビルから逃げ出し落下した人もいる。あの中には生きてる人々がいたことを忘れないでほしい。

そしてその人達には、大切な家族や愛する人達がいたこと、私達と同じように息をして、この地を歩いていたこと、笑っていたことを忘れてはいけない。

どんなに怖い思いをしただろうか？想像しただけでも恐ろしくて、辛くなる。

今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、その時のエピソードを題材にしたものだ。

Neilが歌うと余計に悲しい。

Are You Passionate? is the 24th studio album by Canadian / American musician Neil Young, the only album to feature Booker T. & the M.G.’s, and his eighth with Crazy Horse, released on April 9, 2002 as a double LP and as a single CD. It represents Young’s foray into soul music, not sounding like anything he had previously released. Exceptions are rocker “Goin’ Home”, recorded with Crazy Horse, and the brooding “Let’s Roll”, a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The album ends with “She’s a Healer”, an extended jam.

いつにも増してNeilが怒ってるようにも感じる【Let’s Roll】だ。

この曲は、2001年9月11日にハイジャックされた飛行機93についての歌だ。

テロリストの標的（おそらくワシントンD.C.の建物）に到達する前にペンシルベニア州で墜落した。

アメリカ同時多発テロ事件は、2001年9月11日（火）の朝、イスラーム過激派テロリスト集団アルカイダによるもので短時間で4回の協調テロ攻撃であった。

この攻撃により、2,977人が死亡し、25,000人以上が負傷し、長期にわたる健康被害に加え、100億ドルのインフラと財産の損害が発生した

だがやはり、かけがえのない人々が犠牲になったということが1番の損失だと思う。

そのテーマを書き、歌う。

Neilは、この【Let’s Roll】で、ハイジャック犯と戦って飛行機を墜落させた乗客の1人であるTodd Beamer について読んだ後にこれを書いたのだ。

Toddは、彼らがテロリストを急かすつもりであると、説明するためにAirforn オペレーターを呼んだ。そして電話を切る前にオペレーターは、Toddが他の乗客に【Let’s Roll】と言うのを聞いたのだ。

このToddとオペレーターの会話がインスピレーションになり、この曲が生まれたのだ。

【Let’s Roll】は、Toddのお気に入りの口癖だった。良く子供達に言っていたと言う。

Neilは、2002年のインタビューで、この曲の背後にある想像的なインスピレーションについて話していた。

「良く子供達と出かける時や何かしよう、って時に言っていました。やるべき仕事をする時にも使っていましたね、何度も言ってたセリフです。…とToddの奥さんは言っていたよ。それはとても痛烈で、彼らがしたこと以上の伝説的で英雄的な行為はなどないのに。殉死の約束などなく、どこにも彼らがしたことに対する報酬などもなく、彼らが正しいことをしたのを知ってるだけだ。皆んなには、それについて考えたり、計画したり、何かをしたりする機会すらなかった。英雄的で最終的に彼らの生涯を犠牲にした勇気のある行為だけだ。これ以上、何が言える？誰かが何かを書いたり、何かをしたりしなければならなかったのは明らかだった」と語った。

 

人が人を動かすこと。それは沢山あるだろう。

酷い人は脅したり、騙したり、力尽くですることを想像する人もいるかもしれない。

でもそれってただ強制しただけだ。空間を移動させたり、無理強いをさせただけ。

真の意味で身も心も動かせるのは、感動だろう。

人を感動させることだ。

その中で1番強く動かされるのは、愛だ。

誰かが誰かを愛すること。

それもその人が深く人を愛し、その人のために動いたり、自分を犠牲にしてまで守ろうとしたのを見た時(知った時)、人は感動する。

彼のアメリカを愛する気持ち、人々を守ろうとして動いた行動こそ、強い愛だ。

This song is about Flight 93, the plane that was hijacked on September 11, 2001, but crashed in Pennsylvania before hitting the terrorists’ target, which was probably a building in Washington, D.C.

Young wrote this after reading about Todd Beamer, one of the passengers who fought the hijackers and crashed the plane. Beamer called an Airfone operator to explain that they were going to rush the terrorists. Before he hung up, the operator heard him tell the other passengers, “Let’s Roll.” This conversation with the Airfone operator was the inspiration for the lyrics.

“Let’s Roll” was Beamer’s favorite saying. He said it to his kids all the time.
Young described the creative inspiration behind the song in a 2002 interview with Pulse Magazine: “[Beamer’s wife Lisa] was talking about how he always used to say that (“let’s roll”) with the kids when they’d go out and do something, that it’s what he said a lot when he had a job to do. And it’s just so poignant, and there’s no more of a legendary, heroic act than what those people did. With no promise of martyrdom, no promise of any reward anywhere for this, other than just knowing that you did the right thing. And not even having a chance to think about it or plan it or do anything – just a gut reaction that was heroic and ultimately cost them all their lives. What more can you say? It was just so obvious that somebody had to write something or do something.”

“Let’s Roll” before he and other passengers thwarted the terrorists and died in a field in Pennsylvania.

September 11 attacks

On September 11, 2001, Todd Beamer, a passenger on the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93, tried to place a call through an air phone, but was routed to a customer service representative instead, who passed him on to supervisor Lisa Jefferson. Beamer reported that one passenger had been killed and that a flight attendant had told him that both the pilot and co-pilot had been forced from the cockpit and may have been injured. He was also on the phone when the plane made a quick and violent turn. Later, he told the operator that some of the other passengers were planning to attack the hijackers and regain control of the aircraft, after they learned about what happened at the World Trade Center and The Pentagon. According to Jefferson, Beamer’s last audible words were “Are you ready? Okay. Let’s roll.”In a November 8 address from the World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia, President George W. Bush invoked Beamer’s words: “Some of our greatest moments have been acts of courage for which no one could have been prepared. But we have our marching orders. My fellow Americans, let’s roll!” He used them again in the 2002 State of the Union address: “For too long our culture has said, ‘If it feels good, do it.’ Now America is embracing a new ethic and a new creed: ‘Let’s roll.’”
