It was serviced by Republic Records to radio stations on July 27, 2020 as the lead single from the album. Swift wrote the song with its producer Aaron Dessner. “Cardigan” is a slow-burning folk, soft rock and indie-rock ballad with stripped-down instrumentals of tender piano, clopping drums and melancholic violins. このMVもTaylorが製作と監督を務めたと言うから、このコロナ下でいかに仕事をうまく成し遂げるか？を考えながらやったTaylorは偉いと、素直に思える。

勿論、それをサポートとする財力があると言う揺るぎないバック・グラウンドがあるのは確か。

でも同じ財力も人員もあるけど、諦めてしまっていた映画関係者が多かったし(今もそう)、スマホや自分のカメラで済ませてしまう人が殆どだったから、良く1人で撮影し、他のクリエイター達との連携など頑張ったんだな、と感心するのだ、

「やりたいことがあるけど、コロナだから」と諦めたりしては、生きているのが勿体無い、と言わんばかりに、出来る範囲内での最大限の努力を惜しまない、Taylorに拍手を送りたい。

この【Cardigan】は、アルバム『フォークロア』で語られた多くの架空の人物の1人であるBetty ベティという女性の観点から、記憶に失われた過去のロマンスを慰めている歌詞になっている。

Taylorは、インタビューやファンの質問に対して

「この【Cardigan】は、『皆んな、ロマンスを失うけど、なぜ若い時の恋は、私たちの記憶の中で永久に固定されることが多いのか』ということについて歌っているの。これはアルバムには、3つのトラックの1つであり、同じ恋の三角形を3つの異なる視点から人生のさまざまなタイミングで描いています（他の2つは【 August】と【Betty】。」とハッキリと答えていることから、この【Cardigan】の主人公である語り手は、Bettyという女性であることは確かなの。

ハッキリ明言することで、前にもこのブログで解説したTaylorの現在の彼氏 Alwynではない、と言いたかったのかもね。

何故なら、この【Cardigan】からは、終わった恋愛を連想させるから。

一箇所だけ、続いていそうなフレーズはあるけど、それ以外は1番思い出深く、今も愛している相手であり相手も自分を未だ愛していると確信できる彼氏に対して話しかけているような歌詞になっているからです。

今の彼とはTaylorは真剣遠距離交際をしているから、間違われたくないのでしょう。

【Betty】と名前をタイトルにしちゃった曲にもCardiganのアイテムが出てきていて、

Lyraは「もしかしたら、Taylorは映画を作る気か？」と言う気がしちゃいましたね。彼氏の名前はJamesと設定が決まっているので、「配役まで決まってんじゃないの？」と予想してしまうLyraであったw

「この三角関係って、昔のあの曲みたいっ！」(下記リンク参照) って思ったら、あの曲(you belong with me)は、Teenager 時(学生時代)のTaylorの元カレを題材にした曲だから、Bettyは、やっぱりTaylorなんだと考えて良いでしょうね。あの彼氏もリーバイス履いてんのよ！

この昔の曲【You Belong With Me】のビデオも彼女がいる彼氏は、実は幼なじみで昔から仲良しだったみたいな作り方をしているからね。

新譜の『Folkroare』で描かれているのもTeenager時代のロマンスで、幼馴染みの彼氏が、他の女の子にフラッとなるんだけど、最終的にはBettyの元に帰って来ると言うストーリーになっているから、同じでしょ？

リアルな彼女もあって、

ヴィンテージのピアノを弾き、そこから思い出の地を巡るように、海へと流れていくTaylorの物語は、先ほど話したように、製作、監督、全て彼女が行った作品。

ほぽTaylorが行い、他はリモートでやったり、極力少人数でおこなったという。

「撮影全体は検査官が監督し、全員がマスクを着用し、お互いに近づかないようにしましたよ。私は自分の髪、化粧、スタイリングまでしたんだから」と語るTaylor。

他のインタビューでも細心の注意を払って、プロテクトしたことを話していたから、撮影にあたり、バッシングなどこないように、努力したことをアピールしないといけない世界になったのかな？と、複雑な気持ちになりましたね。

Is this Song about Taylor Swift’s BF Alwyn? Alwyn and Swift first met and fell in love quietly sometime in late 2016 or early 2017. News of their relationship first broke that spring, and Alwyn and Swift have been photographed together in London (Alwyn is from North London) and the Big Apple (Swift has a TriBeCa penthouse there).

Us Weekly reported in March that Swift and Alwyn rely on each other and have discussed getting married. “[They] have talked about their future and marriage,” the source said. “They don’t have a set deadline in place, but they’re very much in love.”

“Cardigan” is a wistful, slow-burning, folk, soft rock and indie-rock ballad driven by a stripped-down arrangement of a tender piano and a clopping drum sample, over a moody atmosphere. The song is written in the key of C minor and has a moderately fast tempo of 130 beats per minute. The production also involves a melancholic violins and a buoyant Mellotron riff. The lyrics display confidence, but are also “slightly embittered”. Swift told her fans that “Cardigan” is about “a lost romance and why young love is often fixed so permanently within our memories”. It is one of the three of the tracks on the album that depict the same love triangle from three different perspectives at different times in their lives (the other two being “August” and “Betty”).

In the song, Swift sings from the perspective of a fictional character named Betty, who recalls the separation and enduring optimism of a relationship with someone named James. Swift also mentions Peter Pan and High Line in the song, and uses a cardigan as a metaphor for a “lingering physical memento” of the relationship. While promoting the limited edition version of the single, Swift told fans on her Instagram story that she sent the original songwriting voice memo to Aaron Dessner on April 27, 2020 after hearing the instrumental tracks he created. Dessner said “Cardigan” was the first song written in their collaboration, and was the first song written from the album altogether. Accompanied by the release of her project written and recorded during the lockdown due to COVID-19, “cardigan” is the lead single from Taylor Swift’s eighth studio album, folklore.

Its music video — which was written and directed by Taylor and shot during the COVID-19 pandemic — finds Taylor shifting through different places by the magic of playing the piano. She revealed in a Tweet that everyone who was on-set took extra precautions to prevent the spread of the virus:

The entire shoot was overseen by a medical inspector, everyone wore masks, stayed away from each other, and I even did my own hair, makeup, and styling.
