今日Lyraが和訳 ＆解説するのは、アメリカ合衆国カリフォルニア州サクラメント出身のGarage Rock ガレージロック、Psychobilly サイコビリーのパイオニア THE CRAMPS ザ・クランプスです。

1976年、ニューヨーク、Lux Interior ラックス・インテリア(Vo)と Poison Ivy ポイズン・アイビー(G)の夫婦を中心に結成。
1977年、アレックス・チルトンをプロデュースに迎え、ロカビリー誕生の地メンフィスにてレコーディングし、1978年1st single “The Way I Walk / Surfin’ Bird”リリース。
通好みすぎた選曲が仇となり売れなかったが2nd single “Human Fly / Domino”が大ヒットし、それから30年以上、メンバーチェンジをしながらも、この奇抜な夫婦を中心に活動していた。
彼らのデビュー当時は、50’S、60’S Rockは、遺物と言われていたがThe Cramps はオールディーズと言われていたロックやファッションに魂を再び与え、息を吹き返えさせたのだ。
そして、Garage Rock, Psychobillyの中心的存在になって行く。
The Crampsは奇抜なファッションや奇行や、変態ライブで有名だが、サウンドは至って真面目なRock Spiritの塊だとLyraは言いたいの。ちゃんと演奏してまっせ！
彼らの奇抜さが歌詞にも現れているのか？

今日の選曲は、1980年リリースのアルバム “Songs The Lord Taught Us” (真面目なタイトルでしょ？) から、【The Mad Daddy】。
今日はLyraの大切な記念日でもあるので、楽しくて奇妙でいて大好きなバンドを紹介しようと考えていたの。

The Cramps were an American punk rock band formed in 1976 and active until 2009. The band split after the death of lead singer Lux Interior.
Their line-up rotated much over their existence, with the husband-and-wife duo of Interior and lead guitarist and occasional bass guitarist Poison Ivy comprising the only permanent members.
The addition of guitarist Bryan Gregory and drummer Pam Balam resulted in the first complete lineup in April 1976.
They were part of the early CBGB punk rock movement that had emerged in New York.
The Cramps were one of the first punk bands, and also widely recognized as one of the prime innovators of psychobilly.

演奏がちゃんと聴き取れるからこちらを紹介しました。
荒くれ感ならば、こちらも良い感じ。でも音質は良くないね。
彼らの音楽は定番化されている。
初期のロカビリーサウンドに忠実に、1960年代に流行ったサーフミュージックのギターサウンドを混ぜて不思議なサイコビリーサウンドを生み出した。
クリアなギター音は２人で出して、プラス最小限のドラムセットでやるスタイル。初期にはベーシストはいなかったし。シンプル編成にシンプルな音。
Simple is the best。
そして、歌詞は、見かけと同じ！
ユーモアと、奇抜さ、B級映画のネタやホラーぽさを出したり、Lyraが好きなダブルミーニングでHな歌詞を書きまくっていた。
Lyraは、変態さとユーモアが溢れる歌詞が一番、The Crampsらしさを表現していると思うよ。
VocalのLux Interior ( Erick Purkhiser)が2009年２月にに亡くなり、Gの Poison Ivy ( Kristy Wallace) も後を追うように亡くなってしまった。
２人はBuddy。
夫婦であり、恋人同士であり、生きて行く仲間であるSoul Mateだったんだろう。
深い愛が見える。
Lyraも、ここまで愛しあえる人が居なくなったら生きて行けないわ。
でも、彼らの作り出した可笑しくて、可愛くて、ホラーで楽しくて、ハラハラする変人だけど美しい歌詞は、Lyraのハートに響いてくる。
歌詞に現れる世界観や、歌詞の世界をまんま表現していたファッションは、一般的には引かれてしまうだろう。
けれど、ロックを愛する者達や60s好き、あの時代の文化全般が好きでたまらない変わり者達 (良い意味で)に愛されているんだ。
そして、地球規模にしたら一部かもしれないが、熱狂的ファンに今もなお受け継がれている。
それも、生きているかの如く、生々しくよ！
このまま、語り継がれ、引き継がれて行くんだろう。
日本にもGuiter WolfとかThe 5.6.7.8’sなどThe Cramps のフォロワーだろうなあ、と判るバンドが沢山いる。
音楽は国境を超えて、
時空を超えて生き続けるんだ！

因みに、今日の曲【The Mad Daddy】は、変態の歌ですが、歌詞の主人公は変態ではなくて、ハメ外し過ぎた馬鹿な男ってだけでしょうね。
酒飲んで酔っ払ってるか、ラリってるかわかりませんが(笑)、気分良くて悪ノリしてる、もしくは嫌な事があって悪ふざけすぎてる奴で、どうしようもない馬鹿でしょう。

Style
Their music is mostly in rockabilly form, played at varying tempos, with a minimal drumkit.
An integral part of the early Cramps sound was dual guitars, without a bassist. The focus of their songs’ lyrical content and their image was camp humor, sexual double-entendre, and retro horror / sci- fi b-movie iconography.
Their sound was heavily influenced by early rockabilly, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll like Link Wray and Hasil Adkins, 1960s surf music acts such as The Ventures and Dick Dale, 1960s garage rock artists like The Standells, The Trashmen, The Green Fuz and The Sonics, as well as the post-glam/early punk scene from which they emerged, as well as citing Ricky Nelson as being an influence during numerous interviews.
They also were influenced to a degree by the Ramones and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, who were an influence for their style of theatrical horror-blues.
In turn, The Cramps have influenced countless subsequent bands in the garage, punk and revival rockabilly styles, and helped create the psychobilly genre. “Psychobilly” was a term coined by The Cramps, although Lux Interior maintained that the term did not describe their own style.
