“She Sells Sanctuary” is a song by the British rock band The Cult. It is from their 1985 album Love and was released as a single in May of that year, peaking at number 15 on the UK Singles Chart.

今日Lyraが和訳&紹介するのは、イングランドの外れウェスト・ヨークシャーのブラッドフォードで1983年に結成されたハードロックバンド(現在は)The Cult ザ・カルトだ。

何故、現在は、と書いたかというと昔はThe Cultと言えばPositivPunkと言われていたからだ。

元は1981年にSouthern Death Cult サザンデスカルトと言うバンド名で顔を白く塗りたくってイアンが歌っていて、その風貌や曲調からGothic Rockと言う人もいた。

シングル盤とコンピレーションアルバムを各一枚リリース後、1983にメンバーやバンド名を変えてThe Cultになったのだ。

多分、Lyraが手に入れたCDはこのコンピレーションアルバムなのだろう。

鮮度が悪い小さな白黒写真には今とは全く違うメンバーが写っている。

しかも、そのメンバーもVoとG以外は違うみたい(みたい、とは画素が悪くて良くわからんから)。

The Cultは、最初からメンバーが流動的でデビュー時からずっといるのは、Vo.イアン・アストベリーとG.ビリー・ダフィーの2名だけ。

1980年代から現在まで続けて来たのだから色々、紆余曲折あっただろうね。

それは、メンバーだけでなく音も変化してきたのだから、何があったとしか思えない。

今日の和訳はイギリスらしいロックバンドだっだ時代から、いきなりAmerican RockやHard Rockへ大変身してしまう彼らの丁度、変換期の時にリリースされた”She Sells Sanctuary”です。

革ジャン着たりするお馴染みの彼らではなく、フリフリを着ていた頃です。

この曲はManic Street PreachersがCoverしたりフォロワーのアーティスト達がプレイしてるのも多いことから、The Cultの影響力や人気が本国イングランドでは根強いことがわかる。

最近は本国でツアーしたりのようで、一時期の”Fire Woman”が出た時の華やかな活動はないから、情報が入ってこないし、日本での認知度は低くなっているかもしれない。(2010年に1日だけライブやったけど)

寂しいことだが、まだバンド活動をしているのだから又、来日してくれると良いなぁ。

イギリスには彼らのファンサークルもあるから人気あるんだよぅ。

The Cultは、1984年1stアルバム『Dreamtime』をリリースした後、1985年バンドはロンドンに拠点を移し、この曲が収録されている２ndアルバム『Love』をリリースし、全英4位を記録。

1st Single cutされた曲であり、ビデオもコレが一段目のミュージックビデオで作られたから、初アルバムの時より聴き易くなったの為に、あちこちでオンエアしてもらえるようになったのがヒットした要因だろう。

次の1987年3rd『Electric』はガラッと又変わる。音もルックスもだ。

リック・ルービンがプロデュースを担当し、それまでのポストパンク／ゴス的なサウンドをHR/HM寄りに変更したのが功を制して全英4位を記録しプレスから高い評価を得た。

そのHR/ HM の路線変更を押しすすめ、1989年リリースの4枚目のアルバム『Sonic Temple』はバンド最高の全英3位になる。

Lyraが好きな曲が沢山入っているアルバムだ。Lyraが大好きなThe DoorsのJim MorrisonにVo.のイアンが似てきたのもこの時期から。

もともと、歌い方がPositive Punkぽくなくて変わった雰囲気だったから、違和感があった。

その為、売れ方がイマイチだったのかな？と感じる。

Ianは多分、Jim Morrisonが大好きなんじゃないかな〜。

丁度The Doorsの映画が公開されて、世界的に再熱していたのもあり、余計路線をJim MorrisonやAmerican Rockに持っていったのではないだろうか？

それにこのJim Morrisonの真似(と言ったら申し訳ないが)をしてるIanのファッションや歌い方が、奇跡的に？しっくり来た。

そのイメージの合致と世間の気運も合わさって爆発的に大ヒットしたのだろう。

その後も高い人気を維持したバンドだったが、1990年代初めからアルコール問題などによりバンド間の関係が悪化していた。

1991年5th アルバム『Ceremony』を発表したが、1994年に6枚目のセルフタイトルアルバム『The Cult』をリリースした翌1995年にバンドは解散してしまう。

しかし、沈黙の4年後、1999年に再結成し2001年に7枚目のアルバム『Beyond Good and Evil』をリリース。

2002年にバンドは再び休止期間に入るが、2005年に再始動し2007年に8枚目アルバム『Born into This』、2009年7月にアストベリーはカルトはこれ以上アルバムを発表せず、EPやデジタル・リリースのみに専念すると宣言するが、程なく前言を撤回し2011年にニューアルバムの制作を開始。

翌2012年に9枚目のアルバム『Choice of Weapon』をリリース。

バンドは現在10枚目のアルバムを2015年にリリースと、活動休止と再開を繰り返している。

やはり、バンドとは難しい。

生き物なんだなー、とつくづく思う。

バンドのサウンドを激変させたり、見た目のイメージも変更を幾度となくしてきたThe Cult。

それはバンド全体が同じ方向を向いているならばうまくいく。

だが、人間そんなにうまくはいかない。

意見の食い違いが生まれるだろうし、目指す方向が違ったりすると一気に揉めてしまう違いない。

それが仲良しのお友達関係だって、時期や生活環境が違えば喧嘩になってしまうのだから、音楽の路線変更なんて人間の好みの違いであっと言う間に合わなくってしまう。

それを繰り返して来たThe Cultはそれを何回もこなして来たのだろう。

でも、長いキャリアがあっても、活動休止や解散にまでなってしまうのだろう。

それは、やはり人間だから。

気持ちや好みが変わる人間同士、上手くやろうと努力もしたとしてもうまくいかない時もあるのだ。

まだ、コミュニティや活動があるだけThe Cultは頑張っている方だと見ていて感じる。

出来れば、せっかく復活したのだから、もう解散や活動休止はやめてねっ。

のんびりで良いからDarkで格好良い、イギリスの匂いがプンプン臭うアメリカ風でもある不思議なRock Soundsを作り続けて欲しい。

だって、なかなか無いじゃない？

UK RockとAmerican Hard Rockをミックスさせたサウンドを出す良いバンドって。

インディアンになりたがってた風なIan。

まるでJimだわ。

このままその道をきわめちゃって！

“She Sells Sanctuary” was the last song to be recorded with The Cult’s longtime drummer, Nigel Preston, who was fired from the band shortly after its release.

According to Billy Duffy, the iconic introduction effects were the result of the fact that all of the guitar effects pedals were on at the same time. The recording was edited to include the introduction with the effects, where as earlier versions started the song more abruptly.

Release Edit

The band has released various versions of the song. Aside from the original 7″ single, three other versions had been released around the same time on 12″ formats: “The Long Version”, “The Howling Mix” and “Assault on Sanctuary”.

In 1993, several more mixes were released on two different CD singles, each called Sanctuary MCMXCIII (Volumes 1 & 2). The “Sundance” remix was remixed by Butch Vig who previously had produced Nirvana’s Nevermind album. The “Dog Star Rising” remix was remixed by Youth who produced The Cult’s eighth album, Born into This.

In 2009, two more previously unreleased versions, a demo and the “Olympic Rough Mix” were included in a 4-disc box set of the Omnibus Edition of Love.

The Butch Vig mix appears in the opening credits of the 1994 film With Honors as well as its soundtrack.

The song was featured in commercials for Nissan, Labatt’s beer, the Ford Mustang and Fernet-Branca.
In later seasons of the popular UK car program Top Gear, it has been used on numerous occasions.
It is used as an intro for Radio Le Mans show “Midweek Motorsport”, and during hourly updates for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Previously it was used as the theme to American Le Mans Series Radio Web broadcasts.
On the medical drama series, Monroe, the song was heard in the fourth episode where Dr. Gabriel Monroe (James Nesbitt) and his best friend, Dr. Laurence Shepard (Tom Riley) are performing surgery.
In February 2012, the song was mashed with Flo Rida’s “Good Feeling” for Budweiser’s ‘Eternal Optimism’ Super Bowl ad.
Rotherham United FC use the song as their walk out music.
