今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、アメリカ合衆国カリフォルニア州ロスアンジェルスで結成されたロックバンド、The Doors ザ・ドアーズ。

1965年ヴォーカリストのJim MorrisonとキーボードのRay Manzarek、ギタリストのRobby Krieger、ドラマーのJohn Densmoreで結成。5年間で6作のアルバムリリース。1967年リリースのアルバム『The Doors ハートに火をつけて』と『STRANGE DAYSまぼろしの世界』、1971年に発売された『L.A.Woman』は、ローリング・ストーン誌の「歴史最高のアルバム500選」にランクインしている。
1971年Jim が死去。以降、1973年に解散するまで3人組バンドとして活動を続けた。
1993年ロックの殿堂入り。

Wintertime Love is a song of the album Waiting for the Sun by the American rock band The Doors.
Waiting for the Sun is the third studio album by the Doors. Recorded at TTG Studios in Los Angeles, the album’s 11 tracks were recorded between late 1967 and May 1968 and the album was released by Elektra Records on July 3, 1968. It became the band’s only number one album (topping the charts for four weeks) and included their second US number one single, “Hello, I Love You” (for two weeks starting August 3, 1968). The first single released off the album was “The Unknown Soldier,” which peaked at number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also became the band’s first hit album in the UK, where it peaked at number 16.

いつものキャッチーなサウンドじゃないから、メジャーなThe Doorsのヒット曲が好きな人には、地味に感じるかもしれないが、実は、歌詞はいつも通り！
意味深なセクシーな所が、The Doorsらしい曲なのです。

アルバムについて
この曲が収録されている『Waiting For The Sun 太陽を待ちながら』 は、1968年にリリースされたアルバムで、初の1位を獲得したアルバムだ。The Doorsには、バカ売れした曲がたっくさんあるから、あの名作であるデビューアルバムで、No.1を獲得したと思いきや、実は、この3rdアルバムが初1位なのだから意外だ。4週かけてナンバー1になった。
このアルバムには、2度目のNo.１に輝いたシングル【Hello I Love You】が収録されているのも注目したい。
ロサンゼルスのTTGスタジオで録音されたアルバムで、11トラックは、1967年後半から1968年5月の間に録音された。
アルバムからリリースされた最初のシングルは【TheUnknownSoldier】で、Billboard Hot 100の39位がピーク。また、英国でのバンドの最初のヒットアルバムとなり、16位になった。
元々、この時期のThe Doorsには、オリジナルの素材がなくなってしまっていた。
ドラムのJohnは、「サードアルバムシンドローム」と表現したものに苦しんだと言う。 これは当時の批評家から指摘されていたもの。
当時は、ヴォーカルのJim Morrison のアルコール問題のため、レコーディングもグループにとって非常に困難だった。

このアルバムは、2018年に50周年に合わせて、アルバムの1-LP / 2-CDデラックスバージョンがRhinoRecordsからリリースされた。これは、長年のThe DoorsのサウンドエンジニアであるBruce Botonic が監督している。
【Wintertime Love】について
この【Wintertime Love】は、実は、前に和訳解説した哀愁を帯びた【Summer’sAlmostGone】と同じく、季節のテーマを扱っていて、穏やかな【Yes、theRiverKnows】は、Robbey Kriegerによって書かれたものだ。
1997年The Doors の回顧ボックスセットのライナーノーツで、キーボードのRay は、後者を賞賛していた。
「ピアノとギターの相互作用は絶対に美しい。Robbeyと私は、これほど敏感に一緒に演奏したことはないと思いますよ。Bill Evans と Jim Hallとレコーディングもしたし」と語っている。
そしてRay は【Summer’s Almost Gone】が「バッハのようなブリッジのあるクールなラテンボレロのようなもの。それは人生の儚い性質についてです。喜びと光と笑いの季節が来ているんだ。」と自信作であることを語っていた。
【Wintertime Love】(「冬の風」) は、前の曲【Summer Has Gone】のテーマを再開してる。特に、最後の2節の「夏が過ぎたとき/どこに行くのか」と「冬が来る」の部分だ。

この曲はフォークバラードに似ている。押韻構成はABCB（2番目の詩）とABAB（最初の詩）が、リフレインを繰り返しが特徴だ)
曲のテーマもいくつかのバラード（悲劇的な愛）のテーマと一致している。
Jim Morrison が詩人であり、彼が英文学についての深い知識を持っていたこと（そして「スペインのキャラバン」や「私の野生の愛」などのこのアルバムの他の曲は、伝統的な文学/音楽形式を明確に模倣していること）を考えると、これらすべての類似点意図的である可能性がある。

“Wintertime wind” resumes the themes of the previous song, “Summer’s almost gone” (especially “When summer’s gone/ Where will we be” and “The winter’s coming on”, in the last two verses).
Due to the absence of original material however, the group suffered what drummer John Densmore described as the “third album syndrome”, meaning the difficulty of a band to have a stock of very good compositions, capable of filling a third disc in a row. This was something that had been pointed out by the critics at the time. The recording was also hugely difficult for the group due to lead singer Jim Morrison’s alcoholic problems.
To coincide with the 50th anniversary of the album’s release in 2018, a 1-LP/2-CD deluxe version of the album was released by Rhino Records. This was overseen by long-time Doors sound engineer Bruce Botnick.
The track “Wintertime Love” and the mournful “Summer’s Almost Gone” address seasonal themes, while the gentle “Yes, the River Knows” was written by Krieger. In the liner notes to the 1997 Doors retrospective Box Set, Manzarek praises the latter: “The piano and guitar interplay is absolutely beautiful. I don’t think Robby and I ever played so sensitively together. It was the closest we ever came to be being Bill Evans and Jim Hall.” In the same essay, Manzarek refers to “Summer’s Almost Gone” as “a cool Latino-Bolero kind of thing with a Bach-like bridge. It’s about the ephemeral nature of life. A season of joy and light and laughter is coming to an end.” While recording “My Wild Love”, the band eventually gave up on the music and turned it into a work song by getting everyone in the studio to clap their hands, stamp their feet and chant in unison. Morrison wrote “Love Street” for his girlfriend Pamela Courson and like all of his other songs about or dedicated to her, there was a hesitancy or biting refusal at the end (“I guess I like it fine, so far”). Speaking of “My Wild Love”, Robby Krieger has cited it as his least favorite Doors song, recalling that when a bodyguard said to him that his most-liked tune of the band is “My Wild Love”, Krieger responded: “Oh shit, man, I hate that song”.
This song resembles a folk ballad: the rhyme scheme is ABCB (second verse) and ABAB (first verse), there is a refrain and use of repetition (“Wintertime winds” and “is that the reason?”) and it sounds as if it was sung by some kind of minstrel (note the stress pattern!).
The themes of the song are also consistent with those of some ballads (tragic love).
Given that Jim Morrison was a poet and that he had a great knowledge of English literature (and that other songs in this albums, such as “Spanish Caravan” and “My Wild Love”, clearly imitate traditional literary/musical forms) all this similarities could be intentional.
In traditional ballads, the “Northern sea” is a formula, a code for something bad about to happen (note the following line: “Love has been lost”).
