めでたいStingのお誕生日に合わせてLyraのカラオケ定番ソングの一曲を和訳する〜！
世界中で認知されているLove Songに見えて、実はめちゃくちゃ恐ろしい曲… 和訳を２バージョンしたわ。
今日Lyra＆解説するのは、イングランド出身のミュージシャン、シンガーソングライター、俳優の Sting スティング（本名 Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, CBC ゴードン・マシュー・トーマス・サムナー 1951年 10月2日 – ）。
1977年にロックバンド The Police ボリスを結成し、ベーシスト兼ボーカルとして活躍。活動休止後はソロ・アーティストに転じ、グラミー賞など数々を受賞。俳優としても有名作品に出演している。

だからお祝いを兼ねてStingのソロ曲を和訳する事を考えましたが、熱烈ファンの方には申し訳ないのだけれど、ソロとしてのStingの曲にも名曲があるけれど、The Police時代のStingのボーカルスタイルがやっぱ好きなんです。

LyraがStingの Birthdayに選んだ曲は、The Policeの No,1 ヒットソング【Every Breath You Take】。
1983年の5th アルバム『Synchronicity』に収録されているThe Policeを代表する大ヒット曲であり、The Policeのセールスの3分の一を占める、お宝ソングでもある。

歌いやすいし、綺麗なメロディが素敵だから。

“Every Breath You Take” is a song by English rock band the Police from their album Synchronicity (1983). Written by Sting, the single was the biggest US and UK hit of 1983, topping the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for eight weeks (the band’s only number-one hit on that chart), and the UK Singles Chart for four weeks. It also topped the Billboard Top Tracks chart for nine weeks.

もう怖いったらありゃしない！
Lyraは前にも話したけれど、過去にストーカーされたり、去年からSNSのフォロワーにstalker されて大変困った経験がありますが、この【Every Breath You Take】は、正にストーカーをやってる奴、もしくは、誰かを監視している人の歌だ。
相手を脅迫しているかのように「ずっとお前を監視しているからな」という曲なのだ。
邦題のセンスのなさ、というか、当時のStingがどのような精神状態で、この【Every Breath You Take】を書いたか知らない翻訳家の人が、『見つめていたい』と和訳しちゃったんだろうね。
見つめていたい、ってどこから出て来たんだろ？
一挙一頭足、お前を監視しているからなって歌なのにね。

この曲がリリースされたのは1983年。
この曲を制作した1992年当時、Stingは、前妻のFrances Tomeltyと離婚調停中の真っ只中。すったもんだしていたらしい。
オマケに、当時女優だったTrudie Styler (現在の妻)とも、付き合いだしていた。
更に話がややこしてくて、妻だったFrancesと新彼女のTrudieが友人関係だったこともあり泥沼化。
中々、離婚できないでいたSting。
また更に、別居中のStingと妻Francesは、同じマンションでお隣さんだったと言う、、、
ハッキリ言って「こいつら、悪い状況を解決する気ないな」と言う、アホみたいな生活を送っていたSting。
ある夜、寝れなかったのか？
1人ベッドの中で寝ている時に、この【Every Breath You Take】のメロディーと歌詞を思いつき、飛び起きてピアノに向かい、曲を30分で書き上げたのだった。
名曲は舞い降りてくる物よね？
正に【Every Breath You Take】は、Stingの元に舞い降りて来た。

ニューキャッスルのカソリック系男子校からウォーリック大学へ進学したSting。そこから 1971〜1974年までイングランド北部教員養成大学(現、ノーザンブリア大学)を卒業し、地元のセントポール小学校で国語教師をしていたと言う。
実家は牛乳屋さん(兄が継いだ)。
教師をしながらジャズセッションを見に行ったりしている時に知り合ったスチュアート・コープランドや、アンディ・サマーズとThe Policeを結成。トリオのロックバンドとして全世界でヒットを飛ばした。
そう言えば、この【Every Breath You Take】が大ヒットした翌年の1984年にThe Policeは活動を休止してしまう。

そして、1985年、ソロ活動を本格的に開始。ジャズ・ミュージシャン（ケニー・カークランド、オマー・ハキム、ブランフォード・マルサリス他）を起用してアルバムを制作し、注目を浴びた。
第一次スティング・バンドの練習など「バンドが生まれる時を記録した」模様はVHSビデオに収めて公開（「ブルー・タートルの夢〜 A Band Is Born」)。
また、スティングがゲスト参加したマイルス・デイヴィスのアルバム『ユア・アンダー・アレスト』や、ダイアー・ストレイツの楽曲「マネー・フォー・ナッシング」など大ヒットし時の人となるSting。
現在まで音楽業界の第一線で頑張って来たSting。
揉めてた当時から付き合っていたTrudie Styler トゥルーディー・スタイラーとの間に、息子 ジョー・サムナー( フィクション・プレインのVocal)と娘のエリオット・サムナー(歌手 I Blame Coco ) がいるそうな。
なんか、幸せなんだったら良いんですが、怖い歌、作ったせいかStingが怖い人に思えちゃうのよね。
それだけ、嫌な結婚をしたStingが付いていないのかもしれないけれどね。
世界中で第８位になる売れた曲【Every Breath You Take】。
それはきっと「どんな時でも君の全てを見ているからね」と言う、ちょっぴり束縛した愛を歌うラブソングだと、全世界が良い解釈をしたからだ。
現にヨーロッパ圏では大人気の結婚式ソング。
それを聞いてStingはヘドが出る思いらしい。自分の意図とは違った解釈をされたからって、嫌がる必要はないと思うんだけど、、、頭にくるとインタビューで語っている。
The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn’t realize at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control.
「一般的に受け入れられているけど、言葉が興味深いんだよ。慰めるようなラブソングみたいに聞こえる。でも、この歌は、悪意がある邪悪な歌だと後になって気づいたよ。これは、監視して全てをコントロールしようとしている独裁者の歌だと思っているよ。」
Lyraは、【Every Breath You Take】によって歌詞は流動的な物だと教わった気持ちになった。

Origins and songwriting
“Every Breath You Take” is, to this day, still perceived to be a love song. However, the lyrics are actually spoken from a character with sinister intent.
Sting wrote the song in 1982 in the aftermath of his separation from Frances Tomelty and the beginning of his relationship with Trudie Styler. Their split was controversial.
As The Independent reported in 2006; “the problem was, he was already married – to actress Frances Tomelty, who just happened to be Trudie’s best friend (Sting and Frances lived next door to Trudie in Bayswater, west London, for several years before the two of them became lovers). The affair was widely condemned.” In order to escape from the public eye, Sting retreated in the Caribbean. He started writing the song at Ian Fleming’s writing desk on the Goldeneye estate in Oracabessa, Jamaica.
The lyrics are the words of a possessive lover who is watching “every breath you take; every move you make”.
I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn’t realize at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control.
Sting later said he was disconcerted by how many people think the song is more positive than it is. He insists it is about the obsession with a lost lover, and the jealousy and surveillance that follow. “One couple told me ‘Oh we love that song; it was the main song played at our wedding!’ I thought, ‘Well, good luck.'”
When asked why he appears angry in the music video, Sting told BBC Radio 2, “I think the song is very, very sinister and ugly and people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle little love song, when it’s quite the opposite.”
According to the Back to Mono box-set book, “Every Breath You Take” is influenced by a Gene Pitney song titled “Every Breath I Take”. Led Zeppelin’s song, “D’Yer Mak’er” (1973), also contains the words “every breath I take; every move I make”. The song has an AABACABA structure.
The demo of the song was recorded in an eight-track suite in North London’s Utopia studios and featured Sting singing over a Hammond organ. A few months later he presented the song to the other band members when they reconvened at George Martin’s AIR Studios in Montserrat to work on the Synchronicity album. While recording, Summers came up with a guitar part inspired by Béla Bartók that would later become a trademark lick, and played it straight through in one take. He was asked to put guitar onto a simple backing track of bass, drums, and a single vocal, with Sting offering no directive beyond “make it your own.” Summers remembers:
This was a difficult one to get, because Sting wrote a very good song, but there was no guitar on it. He had this Hammond organ thing that sounded like Billy Preston. It certainly didn’t sound like the Police, with that big, rolling synthesiser part. We spent about six weeks recording just the snare drums and the bass. It was a simple, classic chord sequence, but we couldn’t agree how to do it. I’d been making an album with Robert Fripp, and I was kind of experimenting with playing Bartok violin duets and had worked up a new riff. When Sting said ‘go and make it your own’, I went and stuck that lick on it, and immediately we knew we had something special.

Regardless of the turmoil during the recording, “Every Breath You Take” was a worldwide success. The music video, directed by Godley & Creme, even won the band the first Best Cinematography award at the 1983 MTV Video Music Awards. The song also stands as the signature song of The Police and has been played more than 9 million times on radio.
It was also:
- The best-selling single of 1983, and the fifth best-selling single of the 1980’s in the United States
- Winner of the 1984 Best Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals Grammy awards
- #84 on the Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time
- It topped the Billboard Top 100 for 8 weeks and the UK singles chart for 4 weeks
