TOTOは昔、紹介した【 Africa】が1番人気として紹介されたり、【Rosana】の様なヒット曲からバラードやミドルテンポ等、シティー派でありスローな大人っぽいイメージが強い。

確かに聴きやすいビッグヒットになったのだが、彼らはスタジオミュージシャン上がりの凄腕プレイヤーばかりだから、個人的にはアップテンポの曲が好きだ。

Goodbye Elenore is fith song of the album Turn Back by the American rock group Toto. and 1st song of Side Two.　Turn Back is the third studio album by Toto released in 1981. Although it yielded the band’s first top-ten hit in Japan and steady sales in that country, the album was a commercial disappointment elsewhere, failing to produce any charting singles and selling approximately 900,000 copies worldwide.

マイナーな曲だけど、1番好きな曲なんです〜。どうでしたか？

実はSteve Pocaroが好きで気になって聴いた曲、と言うMTVか何か？で知ったのが、この曲だった気がする。余り記憶ないのは小さい時だったので。

 

 

今見るとSteve Lukather がギターがうますぎる上に、良く通る曇りのないいい声だったり、人気出たのもわかるな〜とか改めて気付きました。全く興味なかったから、Steve Porcaro(弟) のキーボードやJeff Porcaro(兄)のドラムばかり見ていたのでSteve(ギター)を見ていなかった(笑)。申し訳ないSteveも皆んな、格好良いです〜。特にSteve  lukatherは、1番人気でバンドの顔なのに。

プロデュースは、Geoff Workman & TOTOと、何でもこなしてしまうTOTO。これだけ凄いパフォーマンス出来るのだから当たり前、と言うか朝飯前。因みにGeoff Workmanは、 Queen のエンジニアとして、また　The Cars 、 Journey 、Foreigner のプロデューサー兼エンジニアとしていた売れっ子プロデューサーだった。

『Turn Back』は1981年にリリースされた3番目のスタジオアルバムで、日本での最初のトップ10ヒットとなった記念すべきアルバムだ。このアルバムからTOTOは日本で安定した人気をキープして来たらしい。だが、他の国では商業的には上手くいかなくて、チャートシングルを出せなかったという。それでも世界中で約900,000枚売り上げた。

バンドの意図としては、このアルバムで「アリーナロックバンド」になり、よりヘヴィなロックサウンドを強調していくことだった。

ギタリスト兼ボーカリストのSteve Lukatherは、実質的にミッドレンジを含まない「新しくて非常に異なるサウンド」をアルバムに提供したことでGeoffの仕事(才能)を評価している。

この【Goodbye Elenore】は、TOTOの最初の日本のヒット曲だった。だが、米国ではチャートは振るわず、適度なロックラジオのエアプレイしか受けなかったらしい。

因みに、この『Turn Back』には、Steve が書いた最初のトラック、【Live forToday】がある点も注目したい。良い曲が沢山あるアルバムなのだよ。

アルバムに対するバンドの自信にもかかわらず、商業的な失敗であり、ビルボードの200で41以下。それは、Steveが、アルバムの成功出来なかったと、ビデオを撮影することを拒否し、代わりにMTVのエアプレイも受けず【GoodbyeElenore】のライブ演奏だけと言う選択したことも、ビッグヒットまでにいかない理由の一つだったとも言える。

Steveが酷評と表現しているが、TOTOはそのせいか、Turn Back ツアーもしなかった。宣伝なし、ビデオなし、ツアーなしで、ここまで売れたのは快挙だと思うのだが、、、上は良く思わなかったらしい。

この商業的失敗によりTOTOは、コロムビアレコードで不安定な立場に置かれ、次のアルバムのヒットを生み出さなかった場合、バンドの契約を終了する恐れが出てきた。

このアルバム後には、1982年の空前のヒットアルバム『TotoIV』が生まれる。これでこの苦難に立ち向かい勝つのだが、、、それは又、別の機会に詳しく解説しましょう。

2018年、Turn Backは、Totoの長年の協力者であるElliot Scheinerによってオリジナルのマスターテープからリマスターされた。

TOTOのオールインキャリアの懐古的なブームの一部として再リリースされたのだ。

Totoの初期のアルバムの中で『Turn Back』はリマスターを最も必要としていたアルバム、特にオリジナルのCDは音質が悪いという問題があった。

Steveは2013年にそれがバンドの「ファックユーレコード」であると音質の悪さを言っている(笑)。

Steveは、「俺たちは自分たちがアリーナロックバンドであることを証明したかったんだ。それはおそらく自分たちが行った中で最も奇妙なレコードであり、確かに音響的にはなんだが、発表されたとき、俺はたちはそれを本当に誇りに思っていたんだ。実際には上手くいかなかった…何年にもわたって販売され、今ではファンの間では一種のカルト的な人気があるお気に入りのアルバムだよ。でも当時は一種のハードな状況で、俺たちはパニックになった-俺たちは、そのためにロードに(つまりツアー)出たことさえなかったんだ。レコード会社は、「オーケー、みんな。やりたいことをしな。でもヒット曲をくれないか？そうしなければ、さようならだ」って言ったのさ」と、当時の酷い扱いを語っている。

自信に満ち溢れ、ハードなロックもこれでやれる！日本でもヒットした！次だ！

と言う時に、こんな酷い事を会社に言われるとは、、、。

でもこの曲のエネルギーと、楽曲の良さは半端ない。最高な曲なのだから。

 

 

初々しい気さえしてくるメーキングビデオだが、このMVにはもっと沢山SteveとJeff Porcaro が出ていた気がしたのだが、、、それでも、彼らのプレイヤーとしての才能がわかると思う。

Jeff Porcaro について

ジェフリー・トーマス・ポルカロ（/ pɔːrˈkɑːroʊ /; 1954年4月1日– 1992年8月5日）は、コネチカット州ハートフォード出身のイタリア系アメリカ人。父はジャズ・ドラマー、パーカッション奏者として著名なJoe Porcaro (1930〜2020)。

7歳から父の教えでドラムを習い、10代の頃からセッション・ミュージシャンとして活動を始めた。活動初期にSteely Dan　スティーリー・ダンのツアーとレコーディングに参加したのをきっかけに注目を浴び、幅広い演奏スタイルでその実力を認められ、一躍売れっ子ドラマーとなる。

そしてJeffは数多くのプロのミュージシャンとのセッションに参加している。日本人の有名歌手の作品にも参加していて、彼の仕事がジャンルを問わず聴ける。

プロとしてのキャリアは20年余りにも拘らず参加作品は200作を超える。

steve  lukather 曰く「ずっとJeff とやってきたから俺はメトロノームを使って練習する必要がなかった」と言わしめるほどの腕であった。

1978年共に売れっ子セッション・ミュージシャンとして活躍していたSteve Lukather、David Paich、弟のSteve らとTOTOを結成。商業的な大成功により、Jeffは、その名声を一層高めた。

TOTOの代表曲【Rosanna】における「ハーフタイム・シャッフル」と呼ばれるリズムパターンはJeff Pocaro を語る上で1つの代名詞とも呼べる。

彼は、様々なドラマーを研究して自らのプレイに取り込む研究熱心さでも知られている。

【Rosanna】のリズムパターンは、Steely Danのアルバムでプレイしていたドラマー Bernard Purdie の「安らぎの家」「バビロン・シスターズ」、Led Zeppelinのレッド・ツェッペリンの 【Fool in the Rain】で　 John Bonham　が叩いていたリズムパターンをミックスし、バスドラムのパターンにBo Diddley のリズム（いわゆる「ボ・ディドリー・ビート」）を取り入れた」と、Jef fr自身が教則ビデオの中で解説している。

1983年よりパール社とエンドース契約していた。同社のラック・システム（ドラムラック）は、彼の発案により開発されたもの。

ドラム人生まっしぐらで多くのアーティストからリスペクトされていたJeff。

だが 1992年8月5日、自宅の庭で殺虫剤を散布後にアレルギーで心臓発作を起こし急死してしまう。享年38歳。

一部コカイン中毒が原因の動脈硬化症という噂が流れたこともあったが、SteveやTOTOのメンバーが「彼はドラッグを使用したことは無い」と、コカインの使用について否定している。

【Goodbye Elenore】歌詞について

歌詞については、冒頭で触れたように振られた男性の悲しい胸の内を表現した物であり、ちょっぴりヤケになっている感じにしてある。

Lyraが和訳したのを読めば丸わかり〜と言うくらいストレートで、深読みPointはしたくてもないくらい。

すっごくまだ男性は彼女が大好きなんですね。でも周りの友達に話したら、「尻軽女だからダメだよ、あんな女と付き合っちゃ」と呆れていて話を聞いてくれないから、逆切れ気味の男性がなんとも健気だな、と感じます。

強がり言ってるな、と箇所で、

キスで封をして

俺ん家のドアの前に置いたのさ」と言うのがありますが、この歌詞の「彼は」(he) の部分は、主人公の「俺」なの。自分を客観的に見て「he」にしてるんですね。

ちょっぴり物語風に客観的に見てるから、悲しすぎると、もう1人の自分が見てるように冷静になってしまうからでしょうか。又は、落胆していたけれど、少し時間が経ったから冷静に見れるようになったか、ですね。

こんなノリノリのサウンドだか等、怒りと前向きさが両方感じられて、ギャップが魅力だ。

TOTOの演奏力の凄さに浸れる一曲ではないでしょうか？

とにかくミュージックビデオのJeffが生き生きとしていて1番カッコイイ。

彼がTOTOの中でも最も数多くプレイしたセッションミュージシャンの一人であり、何百ものアルバムと何千ものセッションに取り組んだアーティストだと言うことに是非、注目してほしいな。

Turn Back was recorded with Geoff Workman, who worked as the engineer for Queen, as well as producer and engineer for the Cars, Journey, and Foreigner. The band’s intention behind the album was to become an “arena rock band” and emphasize a heavier rock sound. Toto guitarist and vocalist Steve Lukather has credited Workman for providing the album a “new and very different sound” consisting of virtually no mid-range.

The album contained the band’s first Japanese hit, “Goodbye Elenore”, but the song failed to chart in the U.S., receiving only moderate rock radio airplay. Turn Back is also noteworthy for containing the first Toto track written by Lukather, the rocker “Live for Today.” Despite the band’s confidence in the album, Turn Backwas a commercial failure, making it no higher than 41 on Billboard’s 200 chart. Lukather partially attributed the album’s lack of success to the band’s refusal to film videos using the recorded album tracks, instead opting for a live rendition of “Goodbye Elenore” which received no MTV airplay. The album was also not helped by what Lukather describes as “scathing reviews”Toto did not tour in support of Turn Back.

The commercial failure of Turn Back put Toto in a precarious position with Columbia Records, which threatened to terminate the band’s contract if they did not produce a hit for their next album. The band would meet the challenge in 1982 with the hit album Toto IV.

In 2018, Turn Back was remastered by longtime Toto collaborator Elliot Scheiner from the original master tapes and re-released as part of Toto’s “All In” career retrospective. Of Toto’s early albums, Turn Back was most in need of remastering, with the original CD, in particular, suffering from poor sound quality.

Lukather said in 2013 that it was the band’s “fuck you record”. He further said:

We wanted to prove we were an arena rock band. It’s probably the weirdest record we’ve done, certainly sonically, but we were really proud of it when it came out. It didn’t really catch on — over the years, it’s sold, and now it’s kind of a cult favorite with fans, but at the time it was kind of a stiff. And then we panicked — we never even went on the road for that one. The record company was like, “Okay, guys. We let you do what you want to do. Are you gonna give us a hit record? Because if you don’t, we’re gonna drop you.”

 

Jeffrey Thomas Porcaro (/pɔːrˈkɑːroʊ/; April 1, 1954 – August 5, 1992) was an American drummer, songwriter and record producer. He is best known for his work with the rock band Toto, but is one of the most recorded session musicians, working on hundreds of albums and thousands of sessions. While already an established studio player in the 1970s, he came to prominence in the United States as the drummer on the Steely Dan album Katy Lied.
