Battleme is the stage name and band of Lions singer Matt Drenik, an American musician. It was started as a creative outlet to other projects Drenik was involved in during 2009.
“Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)” is a song written by Canadian musician Neil Young. Combined with its acoustic counterpart “My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)”, it bookends Young’s successful 1979 album Rust Never Sleeps. Inspired by electropunk group Devo, the rise of punk and what Young viewed as his own growing irrelevance, the song significantly revitalized Young’s career at the time, and today crosses generations, inspiring admirers from punk to grunge. The song is about the alternatives of continuing to produce similar music (“to rust” or – in “My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)” – “to fade away”) or to burn out.

Lyraが好きなドラマシリーズ『Sons Of Anarchy』のシーズン３に使われているのが、この【Hey, Hey, My, My】なの。
日本では人気ないし誰も知らないよね。
バイク好きで海外ドラマも好きな人ならば知ってるかもしれないね。
カッコイイのに、スチール流しているだけのビデオなのが勿体ないかなー、やっぱりハナム(主役の金髪の人)が動いてる所がみたいんだもん。
でも、Battlemeのねちっこい歌い方と悲しげなサウンドがモノクロで土埃が舞っているアメリカ南部の風景にピッタリ合うでしょう？
不思議よね。
アメリカ南部なんて極端な保守主義な地域なのに、開拓や男臭いイメージが付いて回る。
事実はもっと根深いしネチっこいのに。
でも、Battleme のCoolなサウンドが色んな人間社会のしがらみを歌っているみたいで深い味わいがあると思う。
本当は、腐った音楽業界のうたなんだけどね。

Battleme のこのアルバムは、『Sons Of Anarchy』というドラマシリーズのシーズン３に使われたサウンドトラックみたいなもの。
2010年から2015年まで続いたシリーズでBattlemeが人気が出たきっかけになった。
因みにドラマは、チャーリー・ハナムとロン・パールマン主演によるクライムアクションだ。
下のは、第1シーズンのコンパクトBOX。暴力に支配された街のギャングチーム、サンズ・オブ・アナーキー(SOA)の紛争などを描いたドラマで第１シーズンは、彼らの武器倉庫が爆破されたことから話が発展して行くストーリーで、全１３話からなる。

ストーリーを少し紹介すると、舞台は、カリフォルニア州チャーミング、(Texasではないの。でも同じ砂漠の街)。

ある日、彼らの武器庫が何者かに襲われた事から、メンバーの運命が少しずつ狂い始めていく…。

実は誘われてLyraが入っているサークルには、Heavy Metalを愛している人達の集まりなんだけど皆んなバイクファッションやバイク好きが多いの。
で、結構、このBattlemeというバンドが好きな人や、Battlemeの【Hey,Hey,My,My】を推してくる人が多いのよ。
今Lyraがわざわざ「Battlemeの【Hey, Hey, My, My】と言ったかというと実は、これカバー曲なの。
アメリカン・ロック好きさんは、初めからピンと来てLyraの和訳を読んでくれたと思う。
そう、この【Hey,Hey,My,My】は、1979年の Neil Young Crazy Horse Banの曲なのです。
Neil Young Crazy Horseのアルバム『Last Never Sleeps』に収録されている曲で、例にしてNeilの簡単な言葉ですごい皮肉を言っている風刺が効いた歌詞なの。
LyraはNeil Youngのシンプルな歌詞なのに深い愛情を表したり、簡素な言葉で痛烈に社会批判したりする所が大好き。
彼の最大の魅力だと思う。
それを、あのヘナヘナな歌い方と声で歌うと不思議なことに胸に染みるの。
そのNeil Youngの良い味を見事にBattlemeは表していると思うよ。
声質が似てる！って言うのもあるけれど、よりドライな感じが、ライダー達のライフスタイルを描いたドラマに合っているわ。

Battlemeは、元はLionsのヴォーカルのMatt Drenikがソロプロジェクトで始めたもの。自分のRockを怠け者ロックとか言ってるけど、真面目だと思うよ。
Battlemeは、『Sons Of Anarchy』の第2シーズンから歌を提供していたんだけれど、今Lyraが解説した【Hey,Hey,My,My】が第３シーズンで使われたことでより人気がUPしたの。
２億回視聴されたと言われているから如何にこの曲とミュージックビデオが皆に受け入れらたかわかるでしょ？
因みに歌詞の中のキングは、ELVIS PRESLEYのこと。
Johnny Rottenは、あの言わずもがな パンクパンドの Sex Pistolsのヴォーカルよん、知らない方の為に説明しました。
皮肉満載な歌詞なんだけど、ロックへの愛があるとLyraは考えるている。
たまにLyraが「こうしたら良いのに」とか、「この点が嫌」とか解説の一環として感想を書いてしまうのはNeilと同じロックを愛しているからです。
生活の一部として空気を吸うようにしてRockを聴いてきたからLyraとは切っても切り離せない仲なの、Rockは！
それ以上でもなく、それ以下でもない、、、仲良しの相棒みたい。
たまに、彼氏にもなってLyraを優しく愛してくれるし、時には意外な返しをして来て真剣じゃないのもある。
そう言うときは愛してるから「こうしたらもっと素敵だから」と言う意味を込めて批判しているの、、、それが、Neil Youngのこの歌詞みたいだな、と思う。

Battleme is the stage name and band of Lions singer Matt Drenik, an American musician.
Battleme first appeared in the season 2 finale of Sons of Anarchy on FX Network with the song, “Burn This Town.” It was a departure from the guitar heavy band Lion that Drenik fronted.These spurts of lo-fi acoustic folk produced numerous songs that began to see Drenik breaking away from the heavy psychedelic outfits he’d previously played in, one of which “No Time For Blood” was featured on NPR’s KUT “Song of the Day.
Sons of Anarchy (2010-2015)
Several Battleme songs appeared in Sons of Anarchy season 3, including a cover version of Neil Young’s “Hey Hey, My My,” which has received over 22 million YouTube views and an assortment of remixes by the likes of Stefan Biniak and others. Battleme’s collaboration with Bob Thiele (Sons of Anarchy, Forest Rangers) on songs “Time” and “Lights” was released on November 19, 2012 on the Sons of Anarchy Volume II soundtrack via Columbia Records. On December 6, 2012 Esquire Magazine picked the Battleme / Thiele collaboration “Lights” as one of the 10 Best Songs of the Week, stating, “Because if the Flaming Lips had written an original song for their Dark Side of the Moon live shows, this is what it might’ve sounded like.”. Drenik began appearing with The Forest Rangers on multiple original cuts for the show. He remained working with them through 7 seasons of the series.

Matt Drenik is the former singer and guitarist of the band Lions from Austin, Texas. He started out as the sole artist behind BattleMe. On later albums he took help of other musicians and included a band / team to evolve his sound.
BattleMe started when Matt moved from Texas to Portland, Oregon and began to write tracks with his basement as the battleground. Experimenting with the lo-fi, folk and electro genres he created more than 40 tracks before getting signed by Thomas Turners Trashy Moped label in 2010.
Nowadays Matt Drenik and BattleMe make their releases through the label El Camino Media. The latest release is Cult Psychotica which was released the 6th October 2017 with some excellent tracks like “No Truth” and “Testament”. The album carries a politcal agenda with a lot of criticism to the 2016 election and Trump which shines through in the lyrics.
During the seven years that BattleMe have existed they have gotten stellar reviews and quotes by big players in the music industry including Esquire (“if the Flaming Lips had written an original song for their ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ live shows, this is what it might’ve sounded like”), Rolling Stone (who compared BattleMe to Smashing Pumpkins), Billboard and Total Rock.
One of BattleMe’s most noticed songs are “Shoot the Noise, Man” which was released on the “BattleMe” album in 2012. It has been used as soundtrack in different TV-Shows, Video Games (EAs eSport game-franchise: NHL) and Commercials (PGA Golf Commercial). A lot of different BattleMe tracks have been used by the TV-Series Sons of Anarchy over several seasons.
