梅雨のジメジメを吹っ飛ばすようなエネルギーと郷愁を誘う刹那い歌詞が、貴方の気持ちを上げてくれると思うよ。

“Castle on the Hill” is a song by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. It was released on 6 January 2017 as one of the double lead singles from his third studio album ÷ (2017), along with “Shape of You”. “Castle on the Hill” was written and produced by Ed Sheeran and Benny Blanco. The song refers to Framlingham Castle in Sheeran’s home town of Framlingham in Suffolk, and reminisces tales of his upbringing in the town. The BBC states, “the song has been described as a love letter to Suffolk.”

青春を懐かしむって正にこんな感じだな、と思うし、誰しもが学生時代の自分やガキンチョだったあの頃の自分と当時の仲間が、良い意味でも悪い意味でも、愛おしく感じるに違いない。

しかし、まあEd そっくりの子を探して来たなあ。

この【Castle On The Hill】は、2017年1月5日に【Shapeof You】と一緒にリリースされ、2018年3月までに、YouTubeで3億回以上再生された。

この公式ミュージックビデオも、2017年1月23日にリリースされた。ジョージベルフィールドが監督し、トムガードナーがプロデュース。Ed 自身の若者と類似した若者のグループが登場するところが、見るものにリアルに歌詞のそのままを伝えるビデオになっている。

フラムリンガム、ボーイトン湿地、ミルデンホールスタジアム、フェリックストーなどの場所が出て来て、サフォーク全体で撮影されたのがわかる仕上がりだ。

最後のショットはフラムリンガム城だ。

Edは、グレアム・ノートン・ショーで、ビデオで彼を演じている若い男が、トーマス・ミルズ高校のシーランと同じ学校に通っていたと話していたので、見た目だけでなく日常生活もティーンの頃のEdみたいかもしれない。だからリアルなEdに見えたのね〜。

 

【Castle On The Hill】は、Ed Sheeran とBenny Branco によって作曲＆プロデュースされた。

【ShapeofYou】と同じ日にリリースされ、【Castleonthe Hill】は、英国、オーストラリア、ドイツなど多くの国で2位になった [因みに【ShapeofYou】は1位でデビュー)。

英国、オーストラリア、ドイツのチャートの歴史の中で、アーティストが新しい曲でチャートの上位2位を獲得したのは、これが初めてだった。そして、アメリカで6位でデビューし、【ShapeofYou】は初登場1位に。 これにより、Ed Sheeranは2曲を同時に米国のトップ10にデビューさせた最初のアーティストにもなったのだ！

歌詞について

 

このタイトルとサビに出てくるCastleは、Edの故郷であるサフォークのフラムリンガムにあるフラムリンガム城を指している。

町での彼の生地物語を彷彿とさせる、 サフォークへのラブレターのような歌詞なのだ。

Edは、かつて「あの頃ペニー・レイン」を見たので、Elton John のフックのない【Tiny Dancer】を聴きながら田舎道をドライブすることについて歌っているのが興味深いなあ、と感じた、、、この曲を歌いながら、和訳したのはEdが歌いながら運転している姿が浮かんだからだ。和訳してから久しぶりにMVを見たら、そう取れるシーンがチラッと映っていたから予想は当たっていたようだw

サビの懐かしくて愛しい故郷や仲間を想うEDの優しい歌詞と、ある種のクライミングドラムが急上昇するコーラスが相乗効果となり、曲をよりドラマティックにしている。

LyraはEd Sheeranの歌詞は言葉なチョイスが上手いところが魅力だと思っている。「手巻きタバコを吸う」とか「法から逃げること」など、ティーンの男子達がイキって、悪いことをしてることを思い出し、いかに自分(たち)が、そのころとかけ離れているかを思い出しているところが、よりフェスティバルに来ている多くの群衆のハートを確実に勝ち取るかが、わかる歌詞だ。Edは歌詞の言葉のチョイスが絶妙なのだ。

このように、サフォークのイギリスの田舎町フラムリンガムでのEdの育成に敬意を表したギター主導のポップソングは、 ポップマエストロのベニーブランコによってプロデュースされたのも売れるきっかけだったと思うし、iTunesでは「人生を肯定するポップロケット」と表現されプッシュされた。彼の次のサードアルバム、÷（分割）からの最初のリリースであり、彼の+（プラス）とx（乗算）アルバムの数学的足跡をたどり、より高みに登った作品になったのだ。

「ShapeofYou」のカバーアートはコロン（:)を表し、「Castle on the Hill」は除算記号（÷）を作成するハイフン（-）を表します。全てのアートワークを並べると、関連性があるデザインになっているのが分かるだろう。

この曲は2015年に作曲&録音された。出たしといい、曲全体に流れる美しいギターサウンドは、U2の某曲を思い出させるし、一貫して類似しているが、Edは、この曲の直接の影響は、U2ではなく、彼がツアーで一緒だったSnowPatrolの【FallenEmpires】から来ていることを明らかにしている。

「俺は、Snow Patrol スノーパトロールで育ったんだよ。U2を聴きながら育ったわけじゃないけど、Snow PatrflはU2で育ったと言うことは知ってるよ。だから、その影響がどこから来たのかを知ってる。」と語るEd。

そして彼は、Bruce Springsteen ブルース・スプリングスティーンの【The River】のような、反射要素を持つ曲を作りたいとも言っていた。

この歌詞を見れば、その意図が分かるし、大成功した作品だと思う。

曲のテーマが、Edの故郷であるフラムリンガムを取り巻くもの。

彼はこの場所で「手巻きタバコを吸い」「友達と酔う」という物語を思い起こさせ、ティーンエイジャーとしての生活を送っていた自分を思い出す様子を描くことで、私たちの胸をくすぐって来るのだ。

Edは、歌詞の中で歌われているフラムリンガム城で、2017年1月演奏に招待された。どんな思いでプレイしたのだろう。想像するだけで胸がいっぱいになる。

「この曲は、俺がアルバムのために完成させた2番目の曲だったから…それを何よりも何度も聴いたんだ。そしてそれはまったく違うように聞こえる。それを2015年半ばに書いたんだ…。サフォークでミュージックビデオを撮影し、撮影では、俺の高校からの友人のグループをキャストしたんだよ。そしてすべてのエキストラは俺の高校に通う子供たちなんだ。俺とまったく同じように見える主人公は私の6番目の形みたい。本当に変だよね。つまり、すべてがサフォークを地図に載せているのみたいなものさ」

青春群像劇のようなストーリーを一曲にまとめ上げたEdの力量は素晴らしい。

おまけにラストの方では、アメリカ映画がやりたがる、「現在の彼らは、こうなりました」と言う部分もあるのだから映画のようでもあり、ここがイギリス発音バリバリなのにアメリカでも売れた理由だと思った。

悲しくなるような現実でも、私たちは歯を食いしばって生きている。

その現在の自分たちを形成している懐かしくも愛おしい時を、忙しい時間の隙間に、フッと思い出す時、Lyraもあの頃に帰りたいな、とEdと同じように思う。

あの時に戻って人生やり直したら、、、そんなことを考えると、こうして生きてる自分の側にあの頃の友人達が寄り添っているように感じて来る。

血を吐くような思いもしたし、身体中が熱くなるような愛も得た。自分を愛してくれた人達。

「まだまだやれるな」

そんな気持ちになるから不思議だ。

きっとみんなも帰りたい時は違うかもしれないけれど、きっと戻りたくなる場所があるのでは？

Released on the same day as “Shape of You”, “Castle on the Hill” reached number two in a number of countries, including the UK, Australia and Germany, while “Shape of You” debuted at number one. It was first time in the history of the UK, Australian and German charts that an artist has taken the top two chart positions with new songs. The song debuted at number six in the US, while “Shape of You” entered at number one; this made Sheeran the first artist ever to have two songs simultaneously debut in the US top 10. “Castle” is certified nine-times Platinum in Australia, six-times Platinum in Canada, and multiplatinum in eight additional countries.

“Castle on the Hill” is a guitar-driven pop song that pays homage to Ed Sheeran’s upbringing in the English countryside town of Framlingham, Suffolk. The song was produced by pop maestro Benny Blanco and described on iTunes as a “life-affirming pop rocket.” The song was released in tandem with the more electro-poppy “Shape Of You.” Together, the two songs were the first release from his upcoming third album, ÷ (Divide), following in the mathematical footsteps of his + (Plus) and x(Multiply) albums.

The theme of the song surrounds Sheeran’s home town of Framlingham, and he reminisces tales of ‘smoking hand-rolled cigarettes’ and getting ‘drunk [with] friends’ at this place, living life as a teenager. The castle mentioned in the song is Framlingham Castle, and in January 2017, Sheeran was invited to perform at the Castle.

The song was written and recorded in 2015. Sheeran revealed that despite a similarity to the music of U2,the direct influence of the song came from “Fallen Empires” by Snow Patrol, a band he had toured with. He said: “I grew up on Snow Patrol, I didn’t grow up on U2, but I know that Snow Patrol grew up on U2, so I know [where] that influence had come [from].” He also said he wanted to make a song like “The River” by Bruce Springsteen, a song with similar reflective element.

There’s a lyric about driving down a country road while listening to Elton John’s hook-free ‘Tiny Dancer,’ because Ed Sheeran saw Almost Famous once.’Adam Starkey from news website Metro states that it “‘has echoes of Mumford & Sons with the kind of climbing drums and soaring chorus sure to win over festival crowds, recalling how far he’s come from ‘smoking hand-rolled cigarettes’ and ‘running from the law in the backfields

 

That was the second song I completed for the album, so… I’ve listened to that more times than anything else, and it just sounds completely different. I wrote that mid-2015.

I shot the music video in Suffolk, and they cast a group of friends from my high school, and all the extras are kids from my high school, and the main guy, who looks exactly like me, is in my sixth form. It’s really weird.　So it’s all putting Suffolk on the map.

Ed premiered this song alongside “Shape of You” on the 6th of January, 2016. The single artworks, when merged, create the cover of his third album.

The cover art of “Shape of You” represents the colon (:) while “Castle on the Hill” represents the hyphen (-), which creates the divide symbol (÷).
