実は、Harryのこの曲をリリースされてすぐに和訳したのに、またもや放置したままでいたら、アルバムリリースされそうになっちゃって、ヤバっ！となってます。ごめんね、Harry。
しかしアメリカのNo.1が、イギリスの80’sぽいデジタルサウンドの曲だとは面白い。

ピコピコに騙されて明るい曲だと思うかもしれないが、真逆の歌だ。

2022年5月現在の時点で２億以上の視聴回数があるこのミュージックビデオ。Harryのサードアルバム『Harry’sHouse』のリードシングルとしては、悲しみに満ちた曲でこれを持ってくるとは、なんとも捻りましたね。今流行りの80’sなので今時と言えば今どきサウンド。
歌詞に反してビデオは、原色のコスチュームを身に纏ったHarryと女性が鮮やかに走る。だが関係が上手くいっていないのがわかる、行き違いすれ違いをうまく表している堂々巡りだ。
なんとなく見ていて毛細血管を思い出してしまい、LyraにはHarryが動脈、そして静脈のようにみえた。それは人類の不可思議さを表しているみたいだ。

ビデオについて
監督をしたタヌ・ムイノは、このビデオ撮影について、嬉しそうにこう話している…
「Harry Stylers のビデオを監督することは、Harryが前からお気に入りのパフォーマーだった私にとって、死ぬまでにやりたいことリストの1つの夢が叶ったみたいでした。彼を撮影するのは私の人生で最も幸せな日だったから、ほろ苦いものでしたが、撮影の2日目には私の国ウクライナが侵略されたので、撮影中の非常識な感情を想像することが出来ますね。私とウクライナの私のチームはこのビデオにとても多くの愛を注ぎました。そして貴方はそれをスクリーンで見ることができますよ。忘れられないミュージックビデオになり、幸せに私は、引退できるようになりました。」と語っている。
戦争勃発と、ビデオ・シューティングが重なるなんて。本当にこの世界は、突然、意図も容易く奇妙なことが現実に起きるものだ。なんと辛い。監督も引退せざるおえないなんて。
ミュージックビデオでは、Harryと恋人だったと思われる女性が、輪になって走っている。
表現は、クラシック音楽の背景を通して重力に逆らう方法を模索している2人のダンサーを描いた、ルイーズ・ナルボニとヨアン・ブルジョワによって作成された2018年のアート「LesGrandFantômes」の影響を受けている。
アートドキュメンタリーは、このミュージックビデオのあらすじに関連している2つ疑問を表してもいる。
「彼らはどこまで行くのだろうか？そしていつまで？ 」
この表現は、後にエルダーブルックとボブモーゼズのインナーライトのミュージックビデオでも採用されている。

【AsItWas】は、Harry Stylesの名前をつけた子が「ねぇ、ハリーったら…おやすみなさい」と言って始ま流、可愛らしい オープニング。
音楽評論家は、この曲をギター駆動のシンセポップトラックと表現し、Stylesのロックからの顕著な変化だと言い、指向性のあるサウンドを指摘している。
ハッキリ言ってLyraには、大好きなDepeche Modeのデビュー当時の曲かと間違えそうになるくらい(笑の、類似80sを体験できる曲だと思う。あとa-haにも感じるし…余談だが、a-haは友達が超〜大好きで、無理矢理、某所にLyraは連れて行かれてa-haのライブを観たことがある。個人的には好きではないが友達は大興奮〜良かったね、会えたし、と言う楽しい(私は…)思い出がある。まあ、こんなに指摘してはなんだが、2019年に馬鹿売れしたWeekendの【Blightlite】も通じる音がある。レトロで新しいサウンドが、今の流行りだから、そうならざるおえないのか？興味ないが、わかりすぎるくらい狙っているので記録しておきます。
歌詞について
この【As It Was】は、Harry Styles のほろ苦い孤独感と過去について悲しげな声で歌い、シンセサイザーと80年代の音楽を彷彿とさせる明るい音で覆い隠しているのが特徴だ。
インタビューの中で、Harryは、この曲を「変容、変化と以前の自己、視点の変化など、すべてを受け入れる」曲だと説明している。
「言いたかったこと、やりたいこと、作りたい音楽が戻ってきたような気がしました。」
堂々と公表していることから、過去話か、現在のストーリーか、或いはただの空想話かもしれないが、この曲には、Harryの「今」が詰まっているのだ。
このインタビューの後に、You Are Homeキャンペーンを通じていくつかのティーザーが続き、2022年3月28日に、曲のタイトル、リリース日、ミュージックビデオからのいくつかのビジュアルショットが、正式に発表された。

歌詞のNothing To Say の部分は、Harry のデビューアルバムに属する2017年の曲【TwoGhosts】の歌詞を彷彿とさせる。
Harry Styles の2019年シングル【Falling】も、彼が歌うときに類似点を示している。Harryはこの手の表現が好きなのかも。

例えば、

などに類似性が見られる。
【As It Was】のこの時点では、この歌詞は、Harry が過去について考えたり、焦点を合わせたりすることしかできないと解釈出来る。
闘争とも言うべき戦い(或いは葛藤)のループの中で立ち往生している彼は、自分に起こったことから先に進むことはできないのだ。
そして、それについてオープンにしたくない。つまり、歌詞の主人公(Harry)は、 誰かと話すことは、感情や感情を処理する健康的な方法であるとわかっていながら、できないのだ。

The lead single from his upcoming third album Harry’s House, “As It Was” sees Styles singing in a somewhat sorrowful voice about his bittersweet feelings of loneliness and the past, masking it with synths and an upbeat sound reminiscent of music from the ‘80s.
In an interview, Styles describes the song as about “metamorphosis, embracing change and former self, perspective shift and all that kind of stuff.”
It just felt like the thing I wanted to say, the thing I wanted to be doing and the kind of music I wanted to make coming back.
It was followed by several teasers through the You Are Home campaign and was formally announced on March 28, 2022 with the song title, release date, and several visual shots from the music video.
This was the last song that was written for the album. It was written in my friend’s front room in England’s country side. It started off much slower, as it was being written, it was a lot slower, the kind of piano line was being played on piano and it kind of turned into a synth, and it just kind of took on a new life. But I’m a fan of it, it’s one of my favourite songs on the album, so I hope people are liking it.

Directing a Harry Styles video was a bucket list dream come true for me as he’s my favorite performer. Shooting him was bittersweet, as it was one of the happiest days of my life, but on the second day of the shoot, my country Ukraine was invaded, so you can imagine the insane emotions we had while shooting. Me and my team from Ukraine poured so much love into this video, and you can see it on screen. It will be a music video I will never forget and now I can happily retire.

“As It Was” opens with Styles’ goddaughter saying, “Come on Harry, we wanna say goodnight to you.” Music critics described the song as a guitar-driven synth-pop track, a noticeable shift from Styles’ rock – oriented sounds. Chris Willman of Variety noted that it takes heavy inspiration from Depeche Mode and A-ha, while also suggesting that it adopted a style similar to the Weeknd’s 2019 single “Blinding Lights”. Lyrically, “As It Was” is rooted in personal transitions and depicts a feeling of loss and loneliness.

The representation is influenced by 2018 art titled Les Grand Fantômes created by Louise Narboni & Yoann Bourgeois which depicts two dancers in search of ways to defy gravity through a classical music backdrop. The art documentary attempts to answer two questions that seem to connect to the synopsis of Harry’s music video.
How far will they go? And until when?
The representation was later adopted in the music video of Elderbrook and Bob Moses’s Inner Light.
This theory is later confirmed as both videos has hired choreographer Yoann Bourgeois – one of the creators of Les Grand Fantômes for video choreography.
The red and blue clothing that Harry and his partner are wearing seems to reference the famous “Red pill and blue pill” dilemma.
The dilemma comes from the 1999 film The Matrix where the central figure Morpheus, the rebel commander, offers Neo the choice between a red and a blue pill. The scene is later developed into a popular meme, where the blue pill stands for “ continuity of the current state of life” and the red for “the solution for knowing the real truth in life.”
The uncertainty (or lack of a free decision) in his and his partner’s relationship is draining him in the music video, as he fights to decide whether to know a terrible truth or accept the current status of the relationship and in the end, he chooses truth. This reference seems to add to its credibility as Harry mentions pills in verse 2

Harry’s goddaughter, daughter of Ben Winston. Ben has directed multiple One Direction music videos. This theory is later confirmed as both videos has hired choreographer Yoann Bourgeois – one of the creators of Les Grand Fantômes for video choreography.
Styles introduces us to his lead single through a child’s voice, his goddaughter, Ruby, whose father is British producer Ben Winston, a close friend of his. She is speaking to him over voicemail since he didn’t pick up.
This is later confirmed by Harry during an interview:
It’s my goddaughter at the start of the song. [She] got a streak of calling me every night before bed, and I missed it once, and she wanted to let me know that she was quite angry with me.
Alternatively, staying on theme, the child could be speaking to Harry on the other side of a door as he is behind one in the music video which means he isn’t letting anyone inside his “house”.
This line reflects on how the passage of time affects on many things and changes its essence.
On one side, maybe because of a breakup, a hypothetical couple has been affected by some circumstances that changed them and their ways of acting with each other.
On the other hand, Styles could be talking to himself, contemplating how time and the experiences he faced have modified him.
In both cases, Harry seems to have gone through situations like this one, as he wrote in a similar way in the 2017 track, “Two Ghosts”. His debut album song reflects on the major character developments of two people after some time:

This manner of bearing with the distance of an ex partner resembles of the attitude Styles took previously on his 2017 track, “Meet Me in the Hallway:”

These lyrics show devastation, caused by the break-up. Styles finds himself alone and outside his lover’s bedroom, crawling for their comeback “on the floor,” “at the door.”
The pills mentioned in this verse are also reminiscent of the opening lines from “Meet Me In The Hallway:”

“Your daddy lives by himSelf” is probably the literal truth. When Styles was seven years old, his parents divorced. While his mother got remarried twice after the divorce, Styles’ father has stayed single since, making it likely that he lives alone.
It was report that Styles’ rumored partner, Olivia Wilde, was planning on splitting her time living in both London and Los Angeles. As Wilde has two children with her ex-fiancé Jason Sudeikis, this lyric could possibly be referring to her.
