今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、イタリア出身のロックバンド、Måneskin モーネスキン。

デンマーク語で「月光」) の意味のバンド名を引っ提げ、2016 年にローマで結成されたイタリアのグラム ロック バンド。
ベーシストのヴィクトリア・デ・アンジェリス、ギタリストのトーマス・ラギ、ドラマーのイーサン・トーキオ。
このブログで彼らを取り上げた時は、自国イタリアでは大人気でも、世界的にはまだまだ無名な感じでしたが、2017 年イタリアのタレント ショー X ファクターの第 11 シーズンで 2 位を獲得した後、注目を集め、「Zitti」という曲でイタリアのユーロビジョン ソング コンテスト 2021 で優勝し、彼らの国際的なブレークスルーが起きたのです。

“Supermodel” is a song by Italian rock band Måneskin. It was released on 13 May 2022 through Epic Records and Sony Music. It was written by Måneskin members Damiano David, Victoria De Angelis, Thomas Raggi and Ethan Torchio, alongside Justin Tranter and the song’s producers Max Martin, Rami Yacoub and Sylvester Sivertsen. It is a California-inspired pop rock track with a grunge intro. Inspired by the group’s stay in Los Angeles, they created a fictional character named “Supermodel”, and the song talks about her life–what she does for a living, how she spends her life and that she would not love anyone back. The single was mostly met with positive reviews; however, in a review posted by Jenesaispop, Max Martin’s production was deemed as damaging to the band’s personality.

曲調がガラッと変わって初めて聴いた時は、「 Måneskinじゃないみたい」と思ったら、今回はロスで知り合った大人気ソングライターの Max MartinとSlyと共作だったので、納得してしまった。
Lyraが大好きなNirvaの曲をサンプリングしているが、Grunge Rock色が出ずに、流行りのPopsで、これならば大衆ウケする感じ。シティーポップのテイストもあって、歌詞から1990年代を意識したのかな?と感じました。
MV ミュージックビデオについて
このダークな内容のミュージックビデオは、ロンドンで撮影されたもの。デュオの映画監督ベッドルーム・プロジェクツ（映像代表作：THE 1975）とベン・チャペル（映像代表作：ARCTIC MONKEYS、NINE INCH NAILS）が監督を務めている。
クエンティン・タランティーノやアルフレッド・ヒッチコックの伝統的なテイストの美味しい所を合体。
歌詞に合わせて主人公のスーパーモデルが泥棒し、それを追っかけるメンバーが歌詞のヘヴィーさを軽減してる。
ハードなサウンドと遊び心のある歌詞が、グッチに身を包み走り回るメンバーと合わさり、ちょっぴり下世話な感じがするのは、土着ぽい発音の成せる技か?
メンバー自身による脚本で出演し、ちょっぴりGeorge Michaelの【Freedom】みたいで完璧な90’sを表現していると思った。本当、完璧だ。

このビデオはロンドンで 16 mm フィルムで撮影された 。デンマークのファッション モデル ニーナ マーカーが演じる「スーパーモデル」の名キャラクターをフィーチャーしている。ぱっと見カーラ・デルヴィーニュかと思ったわ。

「このMVはLAのプールサイドで1週間くらいのんびりした後で生まれた。メンバーが90年代のヴォーグ誌を指でパラパラとめくっていたので、メンバーと好きな90年代の映画などについて語り合った。MV全体を通じて、小さなオマージュをできるだけたくさん忍び込ませようとしたんだ」
また監督したベッドルーム・プロジェクツの方は”MVは「ラン・ローラ・ラン」、「レザボア・ドッグス」のような90年代の映画やヒッチコック、それから1950年代のハリウッド映画などを参考にインスピレーションを得たプロジェクトだった。謎のハンドバッグというマクガフィン(訳注：ヒッチコックの造語。ストーリー展開に一役買うもの)は「マーニー」や「パルプ・フィクション」から思いついた。スーパー16mmフィルムで撮影したんだ」と述べている。
メンバー自身は最近公開されたインタビューで同曲について、”あるスーパーモデルと過ごしたいと思うんだけど、そうしたらトラブルに巻き込まれてしまうかもしれない。タバコみたいなものだよね。大好きだけど、そいつに残念ながら殺されてしまうことも分かっているんだ”と語っており、クールなロック・サウンドにどこかシニカルな世界観が漂う、彼らの真骨頂ともいえる世界観を見事にこのMVに反映している。
なお、初来日を記念して、昨年リリースされた大ヒットアルバム『Teatro D’Ira Vol. I』が来日記念盤として8月3日に完全生産限定でCDリリースされる。オリジナルの内容に加え、ライヴのお供となるラバーバンドが付属。そして昨年LAで行われたライヴ音源4曲も追加収録され、ヒット・シングル「Beggin’」、「Mammamia」などのライヴ音源が聴けるのはこの記念盤のみとなっている。

【Supermodel】は、Nirvana ニルヴァーナの【Smells Like Teen Spirit】(1991年)をサンプリングしているだけに、グランジのイントロで始まるポップ・ロックの曲だ。
Eska Rock の Dominika Pawłowska はそれを Red Hot Chili Peppers の音になぞらえた.ペースのリズム、ビクトリア・デ・アンジェリスの「三次元」ベース、コーラスはパノラマのガブリエレ・アントヌッチによって「アドレナリンポンピング」と表現されていた。
他にも、2000 年代のサウンドのギターはマルーン 5 とも言われてる。

歌詞について
歌詞は、主人公に焦点を当てていて、Damiano は、この「90 年代のスーパーモデル」を、よりエキサイティングなライフスタイルを追求するために、あきらめた宗教的背景を持つ少女だと説明している。個人的にはドラッグにハマり転落するなど愚かに思うが、この手のテーマは、ロックミュージックにはお決まりなエピソードだからクラシカルな王道な歌詞である。
最初の詩の後半で、彼は、彼女に新しい友達が出来て「聖母マリアという名前のドラッグクイーン」がいると歌っている。

初めの歌詞で、supermodelが、依存症なのが分かる。彼女は依存症と薬物乱用の両面でむしばまれているのだ。
このような乱用者には、薬は、すぐに満足感が得られる良いものなのだろうけど、長い目で見れば、薬物は肉体的にも精神的にも健康への影響において容赦ないものになって行くのだ。
その悲惨さが、Damianoのしわがれたセクシーな声で語られる(歌われる)と、一幕目の劇を見ているようで、悲しくも魅惑的に思えてしまうから不思議だ。
元々、劇調なところがManeskinだから語部のように1人の女の一生を歌っているみたいで味が出るのだろう。

より詳しい解説
ここから先は、より詳しく意味が知りたい人へ、Lyraからのサービス。
歌詞の中の「Mauryに話して解決する」の意味は、The Maury Showのことだ。
The Maury Showとは、薬物乱用 (前の歌詞が示唆しているように見える) や妊娠などの個人的な問題について、ホストの Maury Povich と人々が話す、米国を拠点とするトークショーだった。ショーは 1990 年に始まり、2022 年今年、終了した。
つまりこのトークショーに、悩んだら気軽にゲスト出演出来るくらい、このスーパーモデルは、人気モデルだと言う証なのである。
一緒に過ごす相手が、あなたの行動を形作ることは、複数の情報源によって証明されているが、 BBC の記事によると、「あなたの意識の下で、あなたの脳は常に周囲の人々からの合図を拾い上げて、あなたの行動を知らせています。そして、その結果は深刻なものになる可能性があります。」、つまり、一緒にいる人のタイプによって、人間は行動や性格が変わる、と言う意味だ。

歌詞の真ん中あたりの「the Master」は、イエスキリストのことだ。聖母マリアと言い、クリスチャンのDamianoぼいアイデアだと感じる歌詞だ。
「私の賛辞」は、誰かに賞賛や称賛を与えるために使用されるフレーズ。誰かの料理を褒めるときの「シェフへの賛辞」と言うあのセリフだ。
歌詞から見るに、語り手(主人公の男性)は、この女を対処するのが非常に悪夢であるため、彼女がどれほど勇敢に振る舞うかに感心せずにはいられないことを示している。危険な目に会いたくないから避けたいのだが、彼女の大胆さに関心もしていると言うアンビバレンスな気持ちを表している。

“SUPERMODEL” is the first Måneskin’s official single since the release of “MAMMAMIA” in October 2021.
Måneskin wrote “SUPERMODEL” in Los Angeles, a city that influenced with its culture this funk-rock song, both in sound and in the themes.
The song was created with Max Martin, the acclaimed producer they met in California in November 2021. Singer Damiano David shared in an interview with Variety that Martin also collaborated with Måneskin on other unreleased songs that will be on their coming album; in that interview the band also shared that the opening guitar riff is colored by the riff in Nirvana’s 1991 grunge hit “Smells Like Teen Spirit”.
“SUPERMODEL” was performed live for the first time on 14th May 2022 at the Eurovision Song Contest, where they appeared as guests after their victory in 2021.
“Supermodel” was first teased on the 3rd of May, 2022, and then officially announced the following day on all of Måneskin’s social media accounts.

The videoclip for Måneskin’s song is a project that was inspired by a mix of references to movies from the ‘90s, such as Run Lola Run, Reservoir Dogs, and even Hitchcock and a bit of 1950’s Hollywood. [The scene] where the mystery bag gets stolen traces back to Marnie or Pulp Fiction: it was shot on a Super 16.

Following the release of “Supermodel”, Måneskin announced that its music video would be published in few weeks, while they were teasing it through social media. The video was filmed in London and shot on 16 mm film. Directed by Bedroom Projects and Ben Chappell, the video features the titular character of “Supermodel” played by Danish fashion model Nina Marker. The band pays homage to their most favorite movies of the 1990s, as well as portray the song’s character in the clip. They also said that they “worked closely with the directors and Ben [Chappell] to recreate frame shots and sequences from our favourite ’90s films”, admitting that they had fun during the shooting and “playing funny scenes that reminded us of a detective B-movie”. Chappell commented that the idea for the clip came from a “week of sitting around the pool in LA with the band thumbing through ’90s Vogue magazines and talking about our favourite ’90s movies”, adding that they tried to “sneak in as many small references as we could throughout the video.” Bedroom Projects listed that the main inspirations for the video were: Run Lola Run(1998), Reservoir Dogs (1992), Hitchcock (2012), while the idea of the “MacGuffin of the mysterious purse” was reminiscent of Marnie(1964) and Pulp Fiction (1994). They also noted that 1950s Hollywood provided inspiration as well.The visual was uploaded to the group’s YouTube channel on 31 May 2022. During the video shoot, David injured his ankle.
The music video showcases 1990s-stylised parties. The titular character, “Supermodel”, runs away from the first party, and from Måneskin at whole, since she stole a purse with a sparkling contence from De Angelis. The band members try to catch her and reclaim the purse. Will Lavin of NME commented that the visual is “cinematic”, adding that “it captures the song’s fierce mood and playful lyrics as a series of catastrophic events unfold”. Writing for Pure Charts, Théau Berthelot likened the video to Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 movie Eyes Wide Shut.

“Supermodel” is a pop rock song that starts with a grunge intro, compared to Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (1991). Music critics noted that the track has a California sound to it, while Dominika Pawłowska from Eska Rock likened it to the sound of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Following the intro, Damiano starts singing with “sultry” vocals, backed-up by fast-paced rhythm, and Victoria De Angelis’ “three-dimentional” bass, whilst the chorus has been described as “adrenaline-pumping” by Panorama‘s Gabriele Antonucci. Bria McNeal of Nylon opined that the track is “catchy”; while Jenesaispop‘s Paul Bacon noted that its “2000’s-sounding guitars” are reminiscent of Maroon 5.
The lyrics of “Supermodel” focus on the titular character. David describes this “’90s supermodel” as a girl with a religious background, which she gave up to pursue a more exciting lifestyle. Later in the first verse, he sings that she has a new friend―”a drag queen named The Virgin Mary”. In the pre-chorus, the singer warns the listener that the character, “won’t love [them] back”, even if they develop feeling towards her. The chorus sees Damiano chanting “Hey, don’t think about it, hey, just let it go / ‘Cause her boyfriend is the rock n’ roll / Savor every moment till she has to go / ‘Cause her boyfriend is the rock n’ roll”. The second verse, talks about “Supermodel” life’s dark side; that she works “around the clock”, steals “your Basquiat”, and she earns money through OnlyFans.
The two sides to addiction and substance abuse, there is instant gratification on the side of the abuser, but in the long run the drug will be unforgiving in its impact on your health.
Maury is The Maury Show was a U.S.-based talk show where people talk to host Maury Povich about personal issues such as substance abuse (which the previous line seems to hint at) and pregnancy. The show began in 1990 and ended in 2022.
“My compliments” is a phrase used to give praise or kudos to someone e.g. “my compliments to the chef” when praising someone’s cooking.
The narrator indicates that this woman is such a nightmare to deal with that he cannot help but have a sense of admiration for how brazenly she conducts herself.
Jean-Michel Basquiat is a famous neo-expressionist painter of the 1980s: his name indicates metonymically a painting of him.
After his death in 1988, Basquiat’s paintings started to increase in value, for example, Untitled, a painting created in 1982, was sold for $110.5 millions in 2017.
Basquiat is regarded as one of the most best-selling artists in 2021, so having one of his paintings stolen would be a big deal.
