2014年、リードシンガーでギタリストのヘザー・バロン・グレイシーがマンチェスターの大学在学中にドラマーのキアラ・ドランと出会い活動開始。
当初、Creekというバンド名で初めて、その後、ギタリストのヒューゴ・シルヴァーニとベーシストのチャーリー・ウッドが加わり現4人編成に。

2022年6月27日リリース予定のこの【Jealousy】は、Pale Waves が、共有した最初の曲で、3枚目のアルバムに収録予定だ。
最初のシングルにはならなかったが(【Lies】が1st シングル)、最初のUKツアーポストコビッドで登場した曲だった。
アルバム『Unwanted』について
アルバムに関するプレリリースの記事中で、MTVNewsのCarsonMlnarikは、アルバム『Unwanted』を「Hole、Avril Lavigne、Paramoreなどのグループからのハードなロックの影響に完全に傾倒している、感染性の強いコレクション」と呼んだ。
Mlnarikはさらに、アルバムの「ヘヴィーな楽器の音は、暗い主題を完全に補完するものである」と言っている。
2017年にDirty Hitとレコード契約を結び、デビュー・シングル【There’s a Honey】をリリース。その後、ヒット・シングル【Television Romance】をリリース。

翌年にはBBCサウンド・オブ・2018の投票で5位に、NMEアワードで NME Under the Rader賞受賞。
2018年2月にデビューEP『All the Things I Never Said』リリースし、同年9月14日デビュー・アルバム『My Mind Makes Noises』をリリースしUKアルバム・チャートで8位記録。2021年2月にはセカンド・アルバムとなる『Who Am I ?』をリリースした。
PaleWavesのデビューアルバムMyMindMakesNoisesは、1980年代の音楽に大きな影響を受け、このレコードはほとんど前向きな注目を集めた。
2年後の2021年の「WhoAmI？」は、様式的に、このレコードはバンドのデビューの80年代にインスパイアされたサウンドから離れ、1990年代と2000年のオルタナティブロックとポップロックからインスピレーションを得たのだ。

ZaneLoweのAppleMusic1ショーのインタビューで、Heather Baron-Gracieは、パンデミックによってバンドが孤立したままだったため、『Unwanted』をライブで演奏するのが楽しくてエネルギッシュになるようなレコードにしたいと語っている。
このように、Pale Wavesは、「ギターを上げて」「シンセを取り除く」ことで、「よりヘヴィな」ポップ・パンク・サウンドを取り入れることにしたのだ。
このサウンドはアメリカのロックバンド Paramoreに大きく影響されている。

『Unwanted』の曲はすべて、Heather Baron-Gracieと「ロサンゼルスの緊密な協力者グループによって共同執筆された。
これには、Ciara Doran（バンドのドラマー）、Kelsi Luck（Heather のパートナー）、Zakk Cervini（アルバムのプロデューサー）、Sam de Jong、Whakaio Taahi、AndrewGoldstein。 de Jongは以前、セカンドアルバム『Who Am I？:の執筆中にバンドと協力し、Goldsteinは以前にPaleWavesをフィーチャーしたAllTimeLow「PMA」に取り組んでいた人物だ。

このPop Punkの曲には、Avrilのパワフルさ、小悪魔さが入っていて、とても好きだ。
売れる要素がたっぷり入ったアルバム『Unwanted』でPale WavesもYungbud みたいにブレイクするに違いない。
歌詞も生意気で、お茶目でサバサバした女子が目に浮かぶ。きっと同性の女の子たちの指示を得られるだろう。
上から目線の歌詞が、恥ずかしく強がってるみたいだ。
好きな男の子に自分が特別な子だと思わせようと必死な所が、いたいけだ。
実は強がり言ってる女子。
この身近で、クラスにいそうな女の子路線は、ここ数年流行りまくってるPop Punkだ。

“Jealousy” is the first song Pale Waves have shared that is set to appear on their third album. Although it’s not going to be the first single, it appeared on their set list during their first UK tour post covid.

In a pre-release write-up about the album, Carson Mlnarik of MTV News called Unwanted a “collection of infectious ear worms … that lean fully into the group’s harder rock influences like Hole, Avril Lavigne, and Paramore.” Mlnarik further argued that the album’s “heavy instrumentation is the perfect complement to the darker subject matter.
Background
Pale Waves released their debut album, My Mind Makes Noises in 2018. Heavily influenced by the music of the 1980s, the record received mostly positive attention. Three years later, in 2021, the band released their second album, Who Am I? Stylistically, this record moved away from the 80s-inspired sound of the band’s debut, instead pulling inspiration from the alternative rock and pop rock of the 1990s and 2000. Lyrically, most of the music from Who Am I? focused on lead singer Heather Baron-Gracie’s romantic life and her LGBTQ+ identity. Because Who Am I? was released in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pale Waves was unable to promote the album by immediately touring, with shows only resuming a year later in early 2022.
Inspiration and writing
In an interview with Zane Lowe’s Apple Music 1 show, Baron-Gracie explained that because the pandemic had kept the band isolated, they wanted Unwanted to be a fun, high-energy record to perform live. Pale Waves thus decided to embrace a “heavier” pop-punk sound by “turn[ing] up the guitars” and getting “rid of the synths”. This sound was inspired heavily by American rock band Paramore, with Baron-Gracie telling Lowe: “Everyone knows that Pale Wales love Paramore, and I feel like we really sort of channeled them making this record.”
Regarding the tone of the album, MTV News writer Carson Mlnarik described Unwanted as darker than Pale Waves’s previous releases. In response, Baron-Gracie told Mlnarik: “I feel like overall this album in particular touches upon subjects that we’ve never touched upon before, like loss, vanity, anger, jealousy, hopelessness … It’s very dark. It’s very personal.”
The songs on Unwanted were all co-written by Baron-Gracie and a “close group of collaborators in Los Angeles”, including: Ciara Doran (the band’s drummer), Kelsi Luck (Baron-Gracie’s partner), Zakk Cervini (the album’s producer), Sam de Jong, Whakaio Taahi, and Andrew Goldstein. de Jong had previously collaborated with the band during the writing of their second album, Who Am I?, and Goldstein had previously worked on the All Time Low “PMA”, which featured Pale Waves. The overall songwriting process was “intimate”, and Baron-Gracie told MTV that it was “the first time where [she] felt relaxed, in a state of not panicking or a state of not second-guessing everything”.
In September 2021, Heather Baron-Gracie shared a photo on herself and Pale Waves drummer Ciara Doran via Instagram that revealed the band was working on a follow up to Who Am I? On December 4, 2021, Baron-Gracie announced on Instagram that recording for the record had concluded.
