Pretendersは大好きなバンドだから、度々このブログで紹介して来たので、今までのLyraが和訳した曲も合わせて聞いてみて欲しい。

でもドキドキして恋したような気分になるChrissieの歌詞を彩るサウンドは、Jamesのいた頃が1番だった気がする。
言葉で言ってしまうとアッサリしてる風に感じてしまうが、Pretendersの1st＆2nd アルバムは、神レベルのロックンロール・バンドが作った作品なのだ。
それはPretendersの４人全員の個性が輝いていたから。

イギリスの音楽誌「NME[の記者だったChrissie Hynd クリッシー・ハインド（ボーカル）の姉御キャラと、刹那い女心を独特な歌唱法(大好き!) で歌い、バック3人のイギリス男子がプロテクで盛り上げる図式が、多くのロックファンのハートを鷲掴みにしたロックバンドである。

“Kid” is a song written by Chrissie Hynde that was released on the Pretenders 1980 debut album Pretenders. It was also released as a single and reached #33 in the UK. It has been covered by several other artists, including Everything but the Girl.

可愛らしいビデオに、母性愛が溢れる歌詞が、見ていて和む。
Chrissieって、姉貴って感じでサバサバした見かけが魅力だけど、歌詞は愛むき出しだったり、母性愛たっぷりだったり、女らしくて聞くたびギャップ萌えしているLyraです。
Jamesのギターソロがまた上手いなあ。
ライブではかなりHMぽいことをしてるのをビデオで見たけど、早弾きとか全然できるのに、バンドでは、ヴォーカルの声を殺さないように、バックに徹している所が好き。
出しゃばらずに、聞かせるときはガツンとやる。
曲のことをちゃんと考えていて、バンドを大切にしているのが、凄く伝わって来る。
ギタリストの鏡やね。
だから惜しい人を亡くしたと心から思う。
素晴らしい才能を奪うドラッグと言う存在に頭に来る。
また手を出してしまったJamesが残念でならない。
そして、残されたChrissieとMartinの悲しみがわかるだけに苦しい。

James “Jimmy” Honeyman-Scott (4 November 1956 – 16 June 1982) は、イングランド、ハーフォードシャー出身のソングライター、ギタリストらミュージシャンで、Pretendersの創設メンバー４人のうちの1人。
All Musicでは、「80年代初期のニューウェーブ・ムーブメントのギタリストで、最もオリジナルで何をやらせても上手い多才なギタリストだ」と評価されているギタリストでもある。
ギタリストとしての才能だけでなく、バンドのために作曲したり、バックコーラスもこなすし、幾つかの曲ではキーボードも弾いている多彩ぶりを発揮している。
Pretendersの名曲の一つに【2000 Miles】があるが、アレは、ChrissieがJames のために書いた曲なのだ。
彼の死後にリリースされたが、きっと天国のJamesに届いているんじゃないかな？
Jamesは、Pete Farndon(ベース)、Martin Chambers(ドラム)とHerfordからやって来て、Pretendersを結成した。のちにアメリカ生まれのChrissieが参加して、4人になる。
Jamesは、Pretendersに入る前は、The Enid と言うバンドを、Robert John Godreyとやったり、The Hawks(Kelv Wilson, bass guitar & vocals; Dave Plowman, guitar; Stan Speak, drums) や、The Hot Band, そしてThe Cheeksと色々渡り歩いていた。
メジャーデビューがPretendersで初。
「Jimmy Scottのギターを書いた途端に、親しみを感じたの。Jimmyと私は純粋に密接な関係になったのよ」とChrissieは当時を振り返る。
James のメロディアスなギターがあったからこそ、Pretendersの楽曲に彩りを与えられたのだ。
「俺たちは沢山リハーサルをしたよ。1週間7日びっちりね。朝も夜も全ての時間だよ。沢山の鞭打ちみたいな時間はさ、すっごく大変だったな。【Up The Neck】は初め、レゲエだった。で俺が「もっとテンポを早めようぜ」って言ったのさ。ギターをちょっと走らせてさ。メロディアスな所は、ギターを早めてきつめにした。そうしたらChrissieがポップな曲を作り出したんだ。それが【Kid】だよ。」
Jamesが語るこの言葉からも、メンバー全員が、仲良しで一緒にいたこと、そして、Chrissieとは、良い仲間であり、2人には何か共通したものがあり、互いに影響しあい、協力し合える素晴らしい関係があったのが感じ取れる。
そして、どれだけ大切だったかも。

これは、ゆっくりとしたアコースティック・バージョンの【Kid】だ。
可哀想バージョンの【Kid】だとも言われているが、個人的には可哀想じゃなくて、語りかけているバージョンだと思うよ。
1979年にシングル【Pretenders / Stop Your Sobbing】 でデビューし、その後にリリースをしたのが、この曲になる。
因みにB面は、この前紹介した 【Pretenders /Tattooed Love Boys】(解説 They’ve Got Something!)。
デビューシングルが33位で、32位がこの【Kid】にチャートインし、この後に【Brass In Pocket】(和訳 Romance in Northen England’s Style 乙女心 イギリス風)をリリースして、No.1を獲得した。
だからこの曲の流れで、デビューから快進撃を続け、イギリスで大人気になった当時の空気感を感じれる。
このアルバム一枚でPretendersがいかに勢いがあるバンドだったか、わかるから凄いアルバムだ。
ファースト・アルバム『Pretenders』の邦題が何故『愛しのキッズ』だったかは、この曲のヒットがあったからだろう。
その後1981年に『プリテンダーズII』リリース。だが発表後、Peteの解雇と、Jamesの急死といったアクシデントが続く。

この【Kid】は、母性愛が溢れるラブソングだ。
Lyraには、母親が愛する息子に話しているようにも感じるし、愛する恋人が落ち込み弱っているのを励ましている恋人同士(夫婦)の歌にも思える。
Chrissieは、Nick CaveやJohn Caleがいるサークルで、話したらしいが、この歌詞は、母親と自分の母親が売春婦として働いていることを知ってしまった息子(Kid)の会話だと言う。
ただ断定していないことと、言い回しが大人っぽいし、心配している彼氏や親しい友人に対して宥めている風だから、Lyraには男女の会話だと感じた。
だから、これは聞き手が自由に想像して良い曲なんだと思う。
共鳴するバラード
聞き手の経験や想い描く人間関係で感じれば良い。
JamesのギターもChrissieの嘆きの歌詞に共鳴するかのように、優しく響く。
Yardbirds ヤードバーズぽいギターサウンドは、Jamesが好きだったから自然と似てしまったのかもね。
移動遊園地の乗り物に乗って笑うJamesは、そのギターの音色と同じように優しく気の良い青年だったように感じる。
今年の命日もMattはお墓参りして来たようだ。
聴く人に優しさと愛を分け与える音色。
なんて素晴らしいのだろう。

As she tells in John Cale, Nick Cave & Chrissie Hynde – Songwriters Circle, this song is about a conversation with a son (kid) who found out that his mother works as a prostitute.
Author Alex Ogg describes “Kid” as a “resonant ballad.” The lyrics express the singer’s devotion to the listener, who may be her child, but could also be her lover or just a friend. Allmusic critic Stewart Mason calls it “an all-time classic rock and roll love song” and “probably the [Pretenders]’ masterpiece.” He particularly praises Hynde’s “beautiful and emotional” lead vocals, and James Honeyman-Scott’s lead guitar playing, which he says sounds like the Byrds at times but also sounds tougher when necessary. Allmusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine also praised how Honeyman-Scott’s “unconventional” playing adds additional dimensions to the “measured pop” of “Kid.” Author Jeremy Simmonds said of “Kid” that it “showed the group’s complete mastery of sixties hooks with sharp. confident new wave leanings.” Rolling Stone Album Guide critic J.D. Considine praises how melody expresses “emotional vulnerability.”

“Kid” was released as the Pretenders’ second single in 1979, prior to the release of their debut album, following “Stop Your Sobbing.” It performed slightly better on the UK charts than “Stop Your Sobbing,” reaching #33 whereas “Stop Your Sobbing” reached #34. However, the band’s follow up single “Brass in Pocket” performed even better, reaching #1.
Since its original release, “Kid” has appeared on a number of Pretenders’ compilation albums. including The Singles and Greatest Hits It also appears on the live album The Isle of View, in which Hynde is backed by a string quartet, in what Stephen Thomas Erlewine describes as a “poorly conceived” version.
James “Jimmy” Honeyman-Scott (4 November 1956 – 16 June 1982) was an English rock guitarist, songwriter, and founding member of the band The Pretenders.
With the Pretenders, Honeyman-Scott established a reputation, in the words of AllMusic, as “one of the most original and versatile guitarists of the early-’80s new wave movement.In addition to his role as lead guitarist, Honeyman-Scott co-wrote a number of songs for the band, sang back-up vocals, and played keyboards on a few tracks. The song “2000 Miles” was written for him by Chrissie Hynde and released the year after his death.
Chrissie Hynde recalled, “As soon as I heard Jimmy Scott, I knew I was getting close. Jimmy and I turned out to have a genuine musical affinity”.
Honeyman-Scott’s role in shaping the Pretenders’ sound primarily involved adding melodic lead lines to existing songs to help tie them together. He recalled in the early days, “We did lots of rehearsing – seven days a week, all hours of the day and night. At first a lot of the licks were very heavy – like ‘Up the Neck’ started off as a reggae song. I said, ‘Let’s speed it up,’ and put in that little guitar run. The melodic parts of the numbers really all started coming together by me putting in these little runs and licks. And then Chrissie started to like pop music, and that’s why she started writing things like ‘Kid'”.
Two days after the dismissal of Pete Farndon, Honeyman-Scott was found dead in a girlfriend’s apartment of heart failure caused by cocaine intolerance.
He was 25 years old at the time of his death. He was buried in the churchyard at St Peter’s Church, Lyde, Herefordshire.
