今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのはイングランド、ロンドンのビショップズ・ストートフォード出身 のシンガーソングライターSam Smith サム・スミス（1992年5月19日 – ）。
2007年から音楽活動を開始。2012年のディスクロジャーの楽曲『Latch』でゲストボーカルを務め全英11位になり話題になったことを皮切りに、シングルりリースをし、イギリスの音楽業界でヒットを飛ばすソロアーティストとして知られるように。

Sam Smithを一気にスターダムに伸し上げたのが、今日Lyraが和訳するのに選んだ曲 【Stay With Me】(14, April, 2014) だ。
2014年リリースされたSamのデビューアルバム『In The Lonely Hour』からの３枚目のシングル。
2014年5月18日には、イギリス国内で音楽配信された。
前にTom Petty 逝去 の記事を書いた時にパクり疑惑ある曲を３曲紹介したので説明はそちらを参照して頂くとして、この曲を書いたのは、Sam Smith 本人とJames Napier ジェームス・ネーピア (ジミー・ネーピア)の共作になっている。
歌詞の世界観は、Tom のと丸っ切り違う。

Samuel Frederick Smith (born 19 May 1992) is an English singer-songwriter. He rose to fame in October 2012 when he was featured on Disclosure’s breakthrough single “Latch”, which peaked at number eleven on the UK Singles Chart. His subsequent feature—on Naughty Boy’s “La La La”—earned him his first number one single in May 2013. In December 2013, he was nominated for the 2014 Brit Critics’ Choice Award and the BBC’s Sound of 2014 poll,both of which he won.
“Stay with Me” is a song by English singer Sam Smith from his debut studio album In the Lonely Hour (2014). It was released in the United States on 14 April 2014 and in the United Kingdom on 18 May 2014.
“Stay with Me” is a gospel-inspired ballad that details the protagonist pleading with his one-night stand not to leave him. The song was written by Smith, James Napier, and William Phillips, with Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne later receiving co-writer credits due to the song’s noted melodic similarity to Petty’s single 【I Won’t Back Down】.

もう、丸っ切り同じメロディなんだけど、歌詞が真逆の色恋沙汰。
元ネタはTom Petty の【I Won’t Back Down】なの。(前に和訳と解説を話したのでこちらを読んでください。)
Tom Pettyがオッサンの根性を見せる歌詞だとしたら、こちらは、おっさんずLOVEに近いだろう。
でも、あちらはおっさん同士の純愛だから、見た人はほぼ全員がキュンとしているが、こちらはちゃいまんねん。
Lyraがあまり好きじゃない遊びの話、、、つまり一晩寝た相手に「側にいてよ」と寂しい胸のうちを語っている歌なんだよね。
「側にいてよ、君は僕にとっては、必要な人なんだから」
と熱っぽく語り、ゴスペルの色合いを出して神々しく歌い上げる Sam Smith。
「素敵よ〜」ってなる人いるんかね？と、初めて見た時に Lyraは歌詞の設定と盛り上げ過ぎに頭を傾げてしまったが、実際には、この【Stay With Me】って曲は売れまくった。本気で売れた！
つまり、「素敵よ〜」がこの世界中にてんこ盛りなわけ。

“Stay with Me” の曲に対しては、Record of the Year（年間最優秀レコード賞）, Song of the Year（年間最優秀楽曲賞）。”In the Lonely Hour”に対してBest Pop Vocal Album（最優秀ポップ・ヴォーカル・アルバム賞）が授与されたのだから彼の歌声が、この楽曲がいかに皆に受け入れられたかがお分かりになるだろう。
他にも、2015年のBillboard Music Awards 2015 で、”Stay With Me”が最優秀楽曲賞にノミネート、次のシングル「Writing’s On The wall」でイギリスのUKチャートで第1位を獲得と、アルバム「In the Lonely Hour」が69週連続でUKチャートトップ10にランクインにより、ギネス世界記録に認定されるまで至るのだから、半端ない【Stay With Me】パワー！
Samは、仲立人職のケイト・キャシディとフレデリック・スミスの息子として生まれ、ロンドンの芸能学校ナショナル・ユース・ミュージック・シアターに2007年に入学し、ジャズバンドに参加しながら、ジャズボーカリストでありピアニストのジョアンナ・エデンに歌と作曲の技法を学んだ。
2012年10月8日発売のディスクロージャーのシングル『Latch』で話題になると、2013年5月19日に発売されたノーティー・ボーイのシングル『La La La』参加し全英1位のヒットなり、Brit Awards で批評家賞を受賞。
そして、2014年1月、BBCの批評家や音楽関係者の投票で有望な新人アーティストを選出する恒例企画『BBC Sound of 2014』において、1位に選出されるまでになった。
5月には、このデビューアルバムをキャピトル・レコードよりリリースし、今のポップアーティスト、シンガーソングライターとして地位を着実に歩んでいる。
Sam が、最も影響を受けたアーティストは、Amy Winehouse エイミー・ワインハウス、Adele アデルだ。
確かに、この2人の歌い方とSamの歌い方は似てる気がするし、2人とも男性が歌ってもカッコイイ曲を書いていると思うのよね。
2人とも、そんなの想定していないと思うが、LyraはAdele にもAmyにも女であり戦士みたいな、すこし男性ぽい闘志が見えるの。
だから、Samが彼女たちに憧れ、歌唱法を真似たり、リスペクトする気持ちが凄く理解できる。
他にSamが好きなのは、この前、主演映画の和訳をしたばっかりの
Lady Gaga レディ・ガガに、ビヨンセ、マライア・キャリー、ホイットニー・ヒューストン、チャカ・カーンと言う。
皆んな実力派ヴォーカリストばかり。
でも、Samなら目指せる気がする。すでに彼のヴォーカルスタイルは、性は超えられたのだから。

結局は、パクり疑惑で話題になり過ぎたから、「一度も聞いたことがない」と言っていたSam と、共作したJames Naperらも最終的には、【Stay With Me】のクレジットに
【I Won’t Back Down】のTom Pettyと一緒に作ったJeffrey Lynn の名前を記載するようにした。
誰がどうとかは、言わないし、言いたくない。
ただ、Lyraは、いいメロディ、素敵なサウンドは、いつの時代も人々に受け入れられ、いつの時代も愛され続けるのだ、と言うことを痛感するだけ。
Samの【Stay With Me】も、愛され続けるだろう。
2014年6月このブログでも紹介した、人気シンガーソングライターのEd Sheeran エド・シーランがBBC Radio 1の『Live Rounge ライブ・ラウンジ』でこの曲をカバーしたし、
Floorence and the Machine フローレンス・アンド・ザ・マシーンも、この曲をオレンジ・ワルシャワ・フェスティバルでカバーし、8月 Chris Brown クリス・ブラウンが自ら歌詞を変えたバージョンをインスタグラムでアップロードするなど、これからも名曲として親しまれていくだろう。

Background
In an interview with NME, Sam Smith said that the song was written in a studio in Old Street with James Napier (Jimmy Napes) and William Phillips (also known as “Tourist”). Phillips started playing with three chords on the piano, and Napier quickly provided a drum pattern, and according to Sam Smith, “the song just flowed out of us so naturally,” and the song was written in 30 to 40 minutes. After finishing the song, he started to layer his vocal about 20 times, singing in different parts of the studio and harmonizing. The result sounded like a gospel choir, but all from his own voice, and this demo was then used in the released song.
According to Smith, “the song is about the moment in the morning after a one night stand, where the person you are with leaves your house, and you are left by yourself, and it’s just a second, where you are just like: ‘I wish, I wish’. You don’t even love them, you don’t really fancy them that much, it’s just nice to have someone in the bed next to you.”
The song won the Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, and in his acceptance speech for winning the Record of the Year, Smith said that “I want to thank the man who this record is about who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys.”
On 25 March 2014, the song was played for the first time on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show at 7:30pm. On 29 March, he performed the song live on Saturday Night Live in the United States. On 16 May, he performed the song on The Graham Norton Show.
In June, he returned to the United States as part of his tour where he performed the song on Good Morning America, at the Apollo Theater in New York with Mary J. Blige, and David Letterman.
Agreement with Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne
In January 2015, it was revealed that a settlement had been reached with Tom Petty’s publishing company to add Petty and Jeff Lynne as co-writers, and that they would receive a 12.5% songwriting credit. Petty’s publisher contacted Smith’s team after it noticed a likeness between “Stay with Me” and the melody of Petty’s 1989 song “I Won’t Back Down”.
Petty clarified that he did not believe Smith plagiarized him, saying “All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen. Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by. Sam’s people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement”.
According to Smith, he had never heard “I Won’t Back Down” before he wrote “Stay with Me”, but he acknowledged the similarity after listening to the song, and said that the likeness was “a complete coincidence”.
Petty and Lynne, however, were not eligible for a Grammy as the Recording Academy considered “Stay with Me” to have been interpolated from “I Won’t Back Down” by Napier, Phillips and Smith; instead Petty and Lynne would be given certificates to honor their contribution to the work, as is usual for writers of sampled or interpolated work.
