昨夜はBrad Pittが個人的な理由で来日したついでに、アリーナに来たので、一部のBrad Pitt ファンが大騒ぎしているが、、、
アホか？ 何故、U2を見ない？
「うわ〜来てる〜」くらいなら騒ぎたい気持ちを1000歩譲って理解できる。(10000歩かも)。
なんでBonoが熱唱している時に、ズーッと俳優を撮る？プライベートもへったくれもない、と内心思いつつもBrattもHollywood smileだろうが。
それよりU2のメンバーがいたたまれないわ。
１３年ぶりのJAPAN・ツアー・ライブよ？
しかし不思議。遥か彼方、銀河系の昔、昔の1989年の『The Joshua Tree Tour 』を『〜 2019』と西暦つけて、ある意味リメイクツアーをするとは。
U2は名曲が多過ぎて、中々ベストアルバムを1枚選ぶのは難しい。
だが、Lyraの個人的なこのみだと1983年の【Sunday Bloody Sunday】が収録されている『WAR』か、この『The Joshua Tree』のどちらかだ、ベストは。
今夜は、このアルバムの中で1番好きなこの曲を和訳＆解説して気分を盛り上げようぜっ！

『グラミー賞』22回受賞(46回ノミネート)、アーティストグループでのグラミー賞世界最多受賞記録を所持している、世界的人気のあるバンドである。
今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、U2の1987年リリースのスタジオ・アルバムである『The Joshua Tree』のオープニングを飾る曲、8月31日リリース【Where The Streets Have No Name』。

“Where the Streets Have No Name” is a song by Irish rock band U2. It is the opening track from their 1987 album The Joshua Tree and was released as the album’s third single in August 1987. The song’s hook is a repeating guitar arpeggio using a delay effect, played during the song’s introduction and again at the end. Lead vocalist Bono wrote the lyrics in response to the notion that it is possible to identify a person’s religion and income based on the street on which they lived, particularly in Belfast. During the band’s difficulties recording the song, producer Brian Eno considered erasing the song’s tapes to have them start from scratch.

Bonoは変わらない。
彼の言いたい事は変わらない。
今も昔も彼が言いたいのは 「Love 」と「Equal World」だ。
彼はハッキリと口にはしていない。
が、Lyraが彼の作ったU2の歌詞やインタビューを見てきてそう感じるのだ。
彼がスーパーモデルにモテモテだった1989年のこの【The Joshua Tree』時代も、そのずっと前のイギリス・ヨーロッパでブレイクした1983年のお肌すべすべだった『WAR』の時代も(笑)、今年の貫禄つき過ぎちゃった『The Joshua Tree Tour2019』も何も変わらない。
世界中の人々が、平和に平等でいられる世界を理想としているのだ。
それは全て「愛」のためなのだ！

アイルランドの国民的ロック・バンドとして不動の地位を築いたU2。
今回の”The Joshua Tree” 2019は、昨日、12月4日さいたまスーパーアリーナで13年ぶりの日本公演を行った。
不思議なことに前回の13年前の3rd ブーム(世界での話)が来た2006年の”Vertigo Tour ヴァーティゴ・ツアー”で、全3公演の最終日が、12月4日だったという。天の思し召し？
今回ツアーは、これまた不思議な企画。1987年にリリースしたアルバム『The Joshua Tree』のツアーの30周年記念ツアーとして2017年にスタートしたのだから。
今迄、北米、ヨーロッパ、南米で270万人以上を動員し、2017年最も成功を収めたツアーとなる。
内容的には、アルバム『The Joshua Tree』の完全再現、プラス、U2全曲から名曲の数々が演奏され、2015年Innocence + Experience Tour イノセンス＋エクスペリエンス・ツアーと、2018年Experience + Innocence Tourの2つのアリーナ・ツアーからセレクトされた楽曲、映像が、ツアーで使われるものとしては最大級のLEDスクリーンに映し出される内容だ。
今回は、日本の後に、12/8はソウル高台スカイアリーナ、12/11 マニラ、最終の12/15 ムンバイまで周り、トータルしたら世界66公演、300万人近い観客を動員したことになる一大ツアーになるのだ。

このアルバムは、1987年3月5thアルバムとしてリリースし、全英・全米チャート1位（全英アルバムチャート・Billboard 200）を獲得。
世界中でNo.1ヒットとなり、中でもイギリス音楽史上最速で売れたアルバムで、未だにその偉大な記録は破られていない。
シングル【U2 / With Or Without You】 和訳 U2 History & Happy Birthday,The Edge! 本当の意味)、
『I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For】はBillboard Hot 100で1位、アルバムは世界的なヒット作品となった。
この時期のU2の音楽スタイルは、明らかにアメリカをターゲットにしたかのような、ルーツ・ミュージックに傾倒し、ロックの源流であるブルースやゴスペル、ソウルなどブラック・ミュージックの要素が積極的に取り入れられている。
今までのアイルランド的要素を消して、アダルトコンテンポラリーや普通のヒットチャートに、チャートインし、上位を獲得するのもこの時期からだ。
U2が、モンスター級のヒットを飛ばすバンドになったのが、この『The Joshua Tree』からだといとなていい。
今の彼らを作り出した代表作なのだ。

【Where The Streets Have No Name】は、Bonoがベルファストの実際にある地域に住む男性の話を聞いたことにインスパイアされて作った詩だ。
北アイルランドにあるベルファストは、イギリス映画でも度々、民族戦争の激戦区として登場して来た地域だ。
そこに住む人は、宗教や収入もある一つの通りを挟んで明確に違いがあるのだという。
この現実と、このThe Joshua Treeを制作する少し前に、奥さんのAli (当時は彼女)とエチオピアに訪れたときに見た、難民たちの姿を対比させて、書いたのがこの歌詞になるのだ。
ボノは、この名もない道に集まる人々を、観客が集まり、歌い、人間と人間遮る壁のような道を壊す映像を思い描き、「ライブで表現できたら」と作詞したのだ。
今回のライブでもU2は平等の世界を築けるようにとメッセージを送っている。
「Ultraviolet」プレイ中に 貧困救助のための非営利団体[ONE キャンペーン]の活動の“Poverty Is Sexist Campaign”の、最前線で活躍する女性の写真をスクリーンに映し出した。
日本ツアーだからだろう。日本人のオノ・ヨーコ、佐々木禎子、草間彌生、紫式部、川久保玲、伊藤詩織、をあげ、他に エマ・ゴンザレス、グレタ・トゥーンベリ、などの活動家の前を映し出した。
「Equal World」を目指す人々。
そして、ラストには「One」。
完璧。
私たち人間から戦いという行為がなくなる事は、不可能かもしれない。
隣人同士でも争うのだから。
だが、互いに未来を見た時、未来を担う子供たちの幸せを考えたらば、壊れかかったこの地球をどうにかしなければならないのが、わかるはずだ。
名も無き道、、、それは、北アイルランドの争いの地域だけではない。
私たちが生きている道だ。
街は水が氾濫しているだろう

吹き飛ばされていく。
塵の中で踏みつけられているかもしれない。
だが、人生には平坦な道などないのだ。

The lyrics were inspired by a story that Bono heard about Belfast, Northern Ireland, where a person’s religion and income were evident by the street on which they lived.
He contrasted this with the anonymity he felt when visiting Ethiopia, saying: “the guy in the song recognizes this contrast and thinks about a world where there aren’t such divisions, a place where the streets have no name. To me, that’s the way a great rock ‘n’ roll concert should be: a place where everyone comes together… Maybe that’s the dream of all art: to break down the barriers and the divisions between people and touch upon the things that matter the most to us all.” Bono wrote the lyrics while on a humanitarian visit to Ethiopia with his wife, Ali; he first wrote them down on an airsickness bag while staying in a village.
According to him, the song is ostensibly about “Transcendence, elevation, whatever you want to call it.” Bono, who compared many of his lyrics prior to The Joshua Tree to “sketches”, said that “‘Where the Streets Have No Name’ is more like the U2 of old than any of the other songs on the LP, because it’s a sketch—I was just trying to sketch a location, maybe a spiritual location, maybe a romantic location. I was trying to sketch a feeling.”
The open-ended nature of the lyrics has led to many interpretations. With regard to the place Bono was referring to in the song, he said, “I’m not sure, really, about that. I used to think it was Belfast…”
Bono has expressed mixed opinions about the open-ended lyrics: “I can look at it now and recognize that [the song] has one of the most banal couplets in the history of pop music. But it also contains some of the biggest ideas. In a curious way, that seems to work. If you get any way heavy about these things, you don’t communicate. But if you’re flip or throwaway about it, then you do. That’s one of the paradoxes I’ve come to terms with.”
In a 2017 interview, Bono said he still felt that the song’s lyrics were incomplete, stating “lyrically it’s just a sketch and I was going to go back and write it out”. He expressed regret for rhyming “hide” with “inside”. However, the Edge disagreed with his comments, stating that he loves the song and that Bono is “very hard on himself”. Eno responded by commending the “incomplete” lyrics because he feels “they allow the listener to finish them”.
