人は聴いて、見て、感じる、のだ。

そう言った意味で、Lyraがビンビンに感じるのが、Josh Hommeの作り出す音の世界だ。So Cool〜☆

荒々しくて力強く、広大な砂漠をガス満タンにして突っ走る男の色気、、、

炎天下の中、奇声をあげて突き進む向こうには、きっとオアシスがあるだろう。そこには、愛しのアノ子が待っている。

「寂しくて堪らないから、早く俺のあの子に会いに行かないと、やってらんねぇ」って感じが堪らない…って、まあ、これはぜ〜んぶ Lyraの妄想なんだけど(笑)。

Joshの作る歌詞やサウンドを聴いていると、格好良くて強い男の中の弱さがチラチラ見えて来て、それでおかしくなってしまいそうな男の心情に、自分の中にある母性本能がくすぐられるの。

今日はセクシーな曲が気分なので、前に紹介した【Make It Wit Chu】(→ 和訳 メロメロな男心 Melting Love 解説) の元ネタをやったバンドであり、Joshがやっているもう一つの不定期バンドDessert Sessionsから色っぽい曲を和訳しましょう。

日本では懐かしい感じがするP.J Harveyお姉様とのデュエットよん。

色気ムンムン…ではなく、曲の全てがダーティーだから映画を見てるようでLyraは好きです。

今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、アメリカ合衆国カリフォルニア州パルムデザート出身のロックバンド Desert Sessions デザート・セッションズ。

今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、Desert Sessionsの 2003年リリースの9th アルバム 『 Volume 9: I See You Hearin’ Me 』に収録されている曲【Crawl Home】。

The Desert Sessions are a series of albums and a side project of Josh Homme. Rather than an actual band it’s more of a collective of musicians though a collective band have played live on two separate occasions. To date the project has released twelve volumes with a wide range of musicians and would win a Grammy Award for “Best Recording Package” in 2021.

Dirtyな世界観

さっきDirtyって言った意味がわかるミュージックビデオでしょう？ あ、ダーティーって「汚い7って意味じゃなくて、「淫らな」って意味、「下品」に近いニュアンスもあるけど。

男女の恋愛関係の行為を描いたラブソング。

P.J.ハーヴェイって、前は「女の業」を歌ってるイメージが強かったんだけど、丸くなったわ。と言うか随分と普通の人になっちゃった気がする。

これも普通と言う幅が広すぎるLyraだから、一般的にみたらP.Jは、激しいタイプの女の人で、普通じゃないのかもしれないけど。しかし驚くほど普通になったね。大人になったと言うこと？

これMadonnaとか、Fiona Appleとか、Lyraが好きなRihannaなどが歌ったらエロさが強くなって、好みのタイプになるんだけど、、、。ああ、でもこれくらいマイルドな方が良いのかも。

じゃないと放送禁止になるわ (笑)。

Desert Sessionsとは？

 

このDersert Sessionsは、先程書いたように、Josh Homme ジョシュ・ホーミの一連のアルバムとサイドプロジェクトです。(日本読みがホーミ、だから同じ表記にします。実際違う)

Joshは、このブログで良く取り上げている  Queens Of The Stone Age   (→【No One Knows 】和訳 Josh Hommeの魅力 Josh’s Appeal Shake Appeal 解説)のヴォーカル・ギター、作詞作曲をしているフロントマンとして有名だ。

それ以外にも幾つかバンドを不定期でやっていたり、他のアーティストからお呼びがかかってヘルプしたり作詞作曲もする、大忙しの大人気アーティストでもある。

その一つのサイドプロジェクトが、このDesert Sessionsなの。

この集団バンドは、今迄に２つのライブで演奏しているが、実際のバンドというよりは寧ろ、ミュージシャンの集まり、ミュージシャンの集団だと言って良い。

これまでに、このプロジェクトは幅広いミュージシャンと共に12巻の作品をリリースしている (volume 1,とかvol.2といった感じのタイトルですね)。

2021年に「ベストレコーディングパッケージ」でグラミー賞を受賞することにもなった知る人ぞ知る、すっごいバンドだと思う。

彼ら始まりは、1997年8月に ヨシュアトリーの Rancho De La Luna ランチョデラルナ。

Joshが、Monster Magnet, Goatsnake, earthlings?,  Kyuss  （1995年に分裂した彼自身のバンド）、Soundgardenのバンドのミュージシャンを集めたことから始まる。

そこには牧場があり、珍しいユニークな録音機器や楽器でいっぱいの古い家もあった。そこは、Dave Catching (エンジニア)と故 Frea Drake が所有していた家だ。

曲は【on the spot】(その場で) 書かれ、多くの場合、数時間(中には数分) で出来上がっていったという。

セッションを中心に多くのストーリーが膨らんでいったのだ。あの砂漠で作られたのかと想像するとLyraはロマンティックな気分になる。

この曲が入っているVol.9 (第9巻)とvol.10 の曲　【Creosote】は、Dean Ween と　Alain Johannes によって牧場の玄関先で出会って4分以内に書かれた曲だ。

Chris Goss と PJ Harvey の場合は” I See You Hearin Me”の為に、アコースティックの曲 【There Will Never Be A Better Time】を書いた。

彼らは家に再び入り、1つのテイクで曲を録音。これは、この曲がコレクティブによってプレイされた唯一の時間だったらしい。

Desert Sessionsの Live

 

初めの頃の Desert Sessions は、実際にはそれ自体が「セッション」ではなかった。

当時のJosh と彼のバンド（The Acquitted Felons）は、サイケデリックスのキノコで3日間連続で演奏していた。それ以来、Desert Sessionsは、その強度と芸術的メリットにおいて注目に値する評判を獲得したと言う…何ともワルな話だ。

Desert Sessionsのちゃんとしたライブは、まだ２回しか実行されていない。

ジョーイ・カスティロ、トロイ・ヴァン・レーウェン、ブライアン・オコナー、ジョシュ・オム、そしてさまざまな曲を演奏するさまざまなミュージシャン達が集まったライブの化身。

それは、イングランドの音楽テレビ番組” Later… with Jools Holland” 出演時に完璧に行われた。

そして、2004年のコーチェラバレーミュージックアンドアーツフェスティバルも同様に実現した。

 

 

 

TV出演時の映像だが、良い意味でアダルト(大人)ぽく、違った言い方をすると大人しくまとまってる感じ。本当はもっとワイルドなんだよね。凄く勿体無い、、、TVだからお行儀よくしないとダメ〜？

Desert Sessesionsの曲は、色々な所(バンド)から集まったアーティストがいる為に、音もジャンルも様々だ。最近はロックやカントリーやジャンル分け出来ないのもあり、実験的な遊びをしている気がする。

だが全てのイメージは大人の色気が漂っていてそこはブレていないとLyraは思っている。(統一感ないと言う人もいるだろうけど)

その色気は、Joshから報酬されている気がする、、、もちろん他のアーティスト達も男臭い人ばかりだから(笑)、全員からなんだけど、フロントマンがJoshだからね、、、彼のイメージは強くなるでしょう？

そのせいか、今まで Desert Sessionsの曲は、Queens Of The Stone Age のアルバムのために作り直されたりもした。QOTSAは、彼のメインバンドだからこれは仕方ない、、、良い曲ならば、自分のバンドでも歌いたくなるだろう。

その良い例が、前にこのブログで紹介した 【Make It Chu…】だ。彼のイメージとバンドの色と合うし、何しろ色気ムンムンの曲だからメインストリームの普通のチャートにもランクインするくらいのBig Hitをかました。でも、元はこのDesert Sessionsの曲なの。

Josh Hommeは、最初の10巻のボックスセットをリリースし、将来的にはさらに多くのDesert Sessions の曲 (アルバム)をリリースすることに関心を示している。

溢れ出る創作意欲。

それに、このバンドは多様性に富んでいるから、アイディアが無数に浮かぶ気がするな。

アイディアの宝庫。

ならば解散はしないだろう。長く続く旅になりそうでワクワクして来る。

ただ不定期だからお楽しみがいつか分からんと言うのがね、良くないわ。ww

2019年5月3日Queens Of The Stone Age の Instagramのアカウントで、馬と鳥の写真がシェアされた…いきなり。

「誰かが砂漠で録音しているのだろうか」とJoshが質問しているみたいな文章を書いて、ハッシュタグ＃desert＃sessions＃11と＃12を追加、、、これが、新しいDesert Sessions のリリースを示唆していた。

そして、2019年9月13日レコーディングが確認され、マタドールレコードを介して10月にリリース。

ヨシュアトリーで始めたバンドは、ZZ Top の　Billy Gibbons, Primus’ Les Claypool, Jack White (drummer として) Carla Azar, ペイントとドラムをしてStella Mozgawa, the Scissor Sisters singer Jake Shears なども協力している。

これからライブがあるかもしれないね。いつかわからんけど、、、てのがいや。

これらの2つのvolume 9 と10は、8つの新曲入りだったが、Dave Catchingがエンジニアとして参加している。

Volume.9 は、TheDesertSessions LPの中で”I See You Hearin’Me入りで、2003年にリリースされ、Volume 10は、I HeartDiscoと一緒にゲートフォールド10「アルバムフォーマット」でパッケージ化されている。

その中の曲で、【I Wanna Make It With Chu…】をQOTSAでリリースしたが、Joshは、【Dead In Love】と【I Wanna Make It With Chu…】は、元妻のBrody Dalle の為に書いたと言っている。

「俺は Desert Sessionsの曲を書く為に戻ったんだ。そしてわかると思うけど、【Dead In Love】と【I Wanna Make It With Chu】に気持ちを入れてうまく出来たわけさ。だって俺はとても恋をしていて、その中で完全に明らか愛していたから、少し麻痺して無力になっていたのさ。」

はあ、最高、こんなわかりやすい人が好き。、、、だから【I Wanna Make It With Chu】は、あんなに色気Maxなのね。

だから、この曲は【Crawl Home】の場合は、Brodyのことではないと思っている。

作詞作曲がJoshとHarveyというのもあるし、イメージ中のクールな恋愛の歌なのだ。

だからダーティーな雰囲気でも大人っぽくて嫌味がないのかも。

ファンの中には、この歌はエロい気分になる歌だ、と言う人もいるけど、個人的には、寂しさを埋めて欲しい人のラブソングだ。

だから大人っぽく感じるのかも。

やっぱりLyraはもっとロマンティックな歌詞が良いなあ。Brodyに書いたようなJoshの作る歌詞が好き。

 

 

個人的な感想なので、PJ ファンの人には一音楽好きの戯言として、これから書くことはスルーして欲しいのだが、、、

あのね、

PJって悲しい気がする。

彼女の親友でもないし、パパラッチでもないからリアルに「朝何を食った」とか、「リアルタイムの恋バナ」は知らない。

が、普通の噂や彼女のレコードリリース、インタビュー等から想像(あくまでも想像です)すると、悲しい恋ばかりしてない？

タイミングが悪いと言うか、Nick Caveにしろ Josh にしろ、好きになる相手と知り合うタイミングが悪過ぎる。

実はPJ関連の曲を数年前に和訳したまま、放置してるのが数曲あるの。でもアップしないのは暗くなるから〜。

まじで暗い人って周りを暗くする…、光あるところに光ありの真逆だわ！

もう個人的感想ですまない。すまないが、書く。PJはついてない女のイメージが強くて、MVを見るとよりその暗いイメージが暗黒になるの。

ただね、タイミング良くJoshと出会ってたらラブラブなってたんじゃないかな、と。　(Joshのタイプは、ムチムチな女で気が強いタフな女だけど)って余計なことを書いてすみません。

でもこの持ち味のおかげでダーティーでも汚くないのだろう。

 

 

この曲では二人が歌うとセクシーではない、、が、その代わりに大人で冷淡。そこがこの暗さを呼び、ドラムやベースのヘヴィな音がマッチしてくるのだわ。

それに交わりを描いているのに、頭の中で別人格の自分が見てるような感じがして、Lyraは少し怖くなるの。

愛とホラー。

卑劣な恋の歌って感じ。

それを男の色気でカヴァーしてるからマイルドに留まってるような、て分かる？

色気ムンムン話しを書くつもりが、色気でカヴァーしているホラー話しになってしまった、OMG ‼︎

でも大人な皆さんには良いのでは？

The ninth The Desert Sessions LP, Volume 9: I See You Hearin’ Me, was released in 2003, packaged along with Volume 10: I Heart Disco in a gatefold 10″ album format. “I Wanna Make It wit Chu” was later released on the Queens of the Stone Age album Era Vulgaris under the title “Make It wit Chu”. “Covered in Punk’s Blood” has also been played by the band at live shows as seen in the live album and video Over the Years and Through The Woods. Homme has since stated that “Dead In Love” and “I Wanna Make It Wit Chu” were written for Brody Dalle “I went back to do those Desert Sessions, and you can tell what I was going through because I was writing stuff like “Dead In Love” and “I Wanna Make It Wit Chu”. I was so in love, I was totally revelling in it so much, I was a little paralysed”. So I imagine this “Crawl Home” was’nt written about Brody Dalle. And this song’s written by Josh and P.J. Harvey. Though two of them made it & sang it, I don’t know they loved eachother.

When I listen to this one I’m feeling it in every little inch of my body. Think it’s more about the blokes a scumbag and she’s too dim to just get gone.

The Desert Sessions began in August 1997 at the Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree when Homme brought together musicians from the bands Monster Magnet, Goatsnake, earthlings?, Kyuss (his own band, which had split in 1995) and Soundgarden. The ranch is an old house filled to the brim with rare and unique recording equipment and instruments and was owned by Dave Catching and the late Fred Drake. Songs are written “on the spot”, often in a matter of hours. Many stories have grown around the Sessions. For example, the song “Creosote” from Volumes 9 & 10 was written by Dean Ween and Alain Johannes on the ranch’s front porch within four minutes of meeting each other. Similarly, Chris Goss and PJ Harvey wrote the song “There Will Never Be A Better Time” for I See You Hearin’ Me after going out onto the porch of the ranch for four minutes with an acoustic guitar; they re-entered the house and recorded the song in one take, the only time the song was ever played by the collective.

The first Desert Session was not actually a “session” per se, but Homme and his band at the time (The Acquitted Felons) playing for three days straight on psychedelic mushrooms. Since then, the Desert Sessions attained a notable reputation growing in intensity and artistic merit.

The Desert Sessions have only performed live twice. The live incarnation, which included Joey Castillo, Troy Van Leeuwen, Brian O’Connor, Josh Homme as well as a variety of musicians performing different songs, have performed on an episode of the British music television show Later… with Jools Holland as well as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2004.

Many songs from The Desert Sessions would be re-worked for future Queens of the Stone Age albums. Josh Homme has expressed interest in releasing a box set of the first ten volumes along with more Desert Sessions in the future.

On 3 May 2019 on the Queens of the Stone Age Instagram a picture of a horse and a bird is shared with Josh asking “I wonder if anyone’s been recording in the desert?” before adding the hashtags #desert #sessions #11 and #12, possibly hinting at a new Desert Sessions release.

On 13 September 2019 it would be announced that new Desert Sessions recordings are confirmed, set for an October release via Matador Records. the latest session, which took place in Joshua Tree, California late last year, found Homme working with ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Primus’ Les Claypool, Jack White drummer Carla Azar, Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa, the Scissor Sisters singer Jake Shears and more. These two new volumes will feature eight new songs and would be released in the Fall of 2019. Notably Dave Catching would engineer and be the only musician from any of the prior sessions to appear on Vol. 11 and 12. Volumes 11 and 12 would attain generally positive reviews and notably win a Grammy on 14 March 2021 for “Best Recording Package”.
