日本で言う所の『青春ソング』かもしれぬ、エモい曲がお得意なバンドと言ったら、先ず彼らを思い出す。

勿論、青春ぽいサウンドならblink182/もそうだし、エモいMy Chemical Romanceとか他にも良いバンドが様々ある。それなのに、何故かThird Eye Blindの曲が、他の大好きなバンドより先に頭に流れてくるのだ。

究極青春ソングか⁈

彼らの押し出したイメージ戦略が良かったのかもしれない。人種が混在した若者文化をサラッとミュージックビデオに盛り込んだ彼らの 代表曲【Semi- Charmed Life】のメロディの良さとか、ラップやスクラッチをPopなサウンドに乗せたボーダレスなサウンド。

実際はあり得ないけど、スクールカーストが入り乱れた場所、ファッションがバラバラの子たちが、ストリートにいる中を走るヴォーカル(主人公)…など…平和ではない世界の一時の夢の中にいる僕ら。

永遠ではないけど、永遠に続くと思えたハイスクールの日々。楽園。そして意味もなく長居したダイナーに懐かしい顔を探す。

数々の有名な映画やドラマに、彼らThird Eye Blindの曲が使われて来たのは、何気ない日常こそが、永遠に素晴らしいものだったと気づかせてくれるからだろう。

それも強烈に脳裏を刺激してくるエモい歌詞とサウンド。今の作り手達の青春の日々には、必ず彼らの曲が側にいたのだろう。

それが今もラジオで頻繁にかかる理由。もう世代を超えた名曲の証拠かも？

今の僕らを表現してくれた歌。

今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、アメリカ合衆国カリフォルニア州サンフランシスコ出身のオルタナティブロックバンド、Third Eye Blind サード・アイ・ブラインド。

1993年結成。1990年代初頭から中期にかけて、メンバーチェンジが激しかったが、ステファン・ジェンキンスとケビン・カドガンの作詞作曲デュオがバンドの最初のメジャーレーベルレコーディングの契約にこぎつけて1996年にエレクトラレコードからデビュー。多くのヒット・シングルを飛ばした。

今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、1997年のデビューアルバムの『Third Eye Blind』に収録されている5枚目のシングル、1988年8月4日にリリースの【Jumper】。

3年前？に。このブログでThird Eye Blindの魅力について書いた時に、この曲を紹介したのですが、和訳をしていなかったので、今日の曲に選びました。

“Jumper” is a song by American rock band Third Eye Blind from their eponymous debut studio album (1997). It was released to radio as the fifth and final single from the album on August 4, 1998, by Elektra Records. Frontman Stephan Jenkins is credited as the sole writer of the song, whilst production on the song was helmed by Jenkins and Eric Valentine. According to Jenkins, “Jumper” focuses on an act of suicide, with the broader message of the song being about human compassion.

この曲も良くドラマやMTVに、ラジオなど使用率が高いから、Third Eye Blindを知らない人でも、耳にしたことがあるのでは？

Third Eye Blindといえば、前に解説和訳した【Semi-Charmed Life/】だが、この【Jumper】も人気が高くて、この曲の方が代表曲だ、という人が多い。

そしてこの悲しい歌詞に自分の生きた方や、思い出を重ね合わせ、改めて色々と考えてしまう人もいると思う。

はっきり言ってヴォーカルは、歌が上手いとは、決して言えないレベル。だが、キャラの良さから兄貴っぽく見えて、頼れる男に見えてしまい、「この男の話を聞いてみよう」と言う気になれるのだ。

これを説得力のある声、歌い方というのだろうか？

そしてこの口ずさみたくなるようなサウンド。これが合わさると、兄貴のアドバイスを聞くように聴いてみたくなるし、私達の気持ちを代弁するかのような歌詞にグッと来るのはそのせいかもしれない。

メンバーチェンジが激しいバンドだったが、この時期は、

最高の人気を博したこのアルバムだったが、1999年セカンドアルバムであるBlueがリリースされた直後、色々ともめた挙句、作曲の要でもあったKevin Cadoganが脱退してしまった。この後からワールドワイドなビッグヒットと言うのがなくなってしまうが、現在も精力的に活動している。

【Jumper】について

【Jumper】は、1998年8月4日にエレクトラレコードからアルバムの5番目で最後のシングルとしてラジオを皮切りにリリースされた。

フロントマンのStephen Jenkins がこの曲の唯一の作家とされているが、制作はStephen とEric Valentine が担当している。

Stephen によると、【Jumper】は自殺行為に焦点を当てていて、この曲のより広いメッセージとしては、人間の思いやりをテーマにしていると考えて良いだろう。

この曲は、マネージャーから聞かされた、ひどく虐められて橋から飛び降りてしまったゲイの子供についての話にインスパイアされて書いた曲である。

比喩的に「ふちから離れてくれ」と繰り返されているが、これは、彼が自らの人生を破壊しようとするのをやめさせるために、すべての自殺者に書かれているのだ。この曲は、Jim Carreyジム・キャリーの「イエスマン」で文字通り取り上げられている。この曲が影響を与えたのだ。実際にJim Carreyは、この曲を歌っている。見てみて　↓↓

 

このアホさ加減に、泣けて来る〜(笑)。Jim Carryの歌い方も嫌味ったらしく韻を強調して歌っちゃって、もう本当にバカ。でも人を救う時って捨て身覚悟でやるし、思いついたのが歌だから「やっちまえ！」てやったら、こんなアホ丸出しの歌になり、自殺しようとした人の方が、歌詞を知ってるのでJimをリードしながら歌っちゃうし、下にいたギャラリーもこの【Jumper】が大ヒットした曲だから全員が知っていて、大合唱になってしまう、、、何だかラストに男性を投げ飛ばして救ったJimがヒーローに見えちゃうんだから。人間て、何て不思議な生き物よ。

レコーディングは、サンフランシスコのToast Studios、Skywalker Ranch、H.O.S、The SitebyValentine。ここで録音だけでなく、ミキシングもされ、オルタナティブロックとアコースティックパワーのポップソングが生まれたのだ。

この聴きやすいサウンドに、いじめられたゲイのティーンエイジャーの自殺をテーマに書かれているのがメインテーマ。そして、これに合わせて、成長したときの Steve自身の機能不全とも言える経験ももりこんだ内容である。

音楽評論家から好評を博し、US Billboard Hot 100で5位、Billboard ModernRockTracksチャートで9位に達した。 【Jumpe】は、はカナダでも成功し、RPMトップシングルチャートで10位にランクインしていた。

Stephen Jenkins は「俺の両親は離婚した。それは俺を傷つけたんだ。うちは貧しかったが、俺は、裕福な高校に通ってた。俺は失読症で、注意欠陥障害があって、それはまだ残っているよ。だから俺は。これらすべてを持ち歩いていたんだ。ある日の午後、俺はこの閃きを経験した。俺は『あなたは何を知っていますか？俺はそれをすべて一緒に持っているわけではありません。本当に難しいけど、それが俺なんです。それが俺です。』俺は、それを受け入れた。曲の中に『誰もが悪魔を裏返しにしなければならない/多分今日は過去を片付けることができる」という行がある。過去を片付けることについての歌なんす。」—と、曲のインスピレーションについて語っている。

歌詞はStephenだけで書かれたと言われている。状況は先程から触れている「同性愛者の少年が橋から飛び降りて自殺したその友人」に焦点を当てた曲の物語で、いじめの危険について意図的に書いた曲だ。

バンドマネージャーのエリック・ゴッドランドの友人で、自分のセクシュアリティのためにいじめられ、それに耐えて来たために高校で自殺した男子のエピソードに影響を受けて書かれたのだが、嘆きの言葉として書かれているにもかかわらず、Stephen は【Jumper】のより広いメッセージが、お互いに理解と思いやりを持つことを意味して書いたと、語っている。彼はさらに歌の意味を説明した。

「【Jumper】は、コロナド橋から飛び降りて自殺した男性についての歌です。それは一種のノワールに触発された物語であり、要点は、俺達がお互いをよりよく理解していれば、お互いに信用を与えるかもしれないということでした。そして、あなたが俺に二度と会いたくないのなら、俺は理解するでしょう。時々、あなたが本当に人々を助け、あなたが自分自身を無防備にし、彼らがあなたを本当に見ることができないとき[後で]。俺にはレイプされた友人がいて、彼女は医療費が必要でした。彼女は恥ずかしくて両親と話すことができなかったし、基本的に俺が彼女を助けた後、彼女は俺に会いたくなかったんだ。彼女は自分のことを少し、考え込み過ぎた。俺はそれを理解したんだ」

【Jumper】のリリース以来、Stephen は多くのリスナーにとって曲の意味が変わったことを認識しているという。彼は、この曲の意味はリリース時に完全には理解されていないと感じた。だが、「今ではこの本当の意味がある。聴衆にとってこのリリースは、巨大な瞬間です。」と曲のメッセージが真剣なものであり、多くの人に届き、それが人々を良い方向に導く重要な曲だと言痛いのだと思う。

Yahoo!のリンゼイパーカーエンターテインメントはこの曲を「いじめ対策のアンセム」として指定し、Stephen Jenkins は「【Jumper】が多くのLGBTリスナーの間で共鳴していると信じている」と現状を認めるようになったと言う。

Lyraのより深い解説

この曲は、自殺者の友人の視点から書かれている。彼は、先に進んで自分自身を離れる前に、快適に感じることができるより良い場所にたどり着くように彼を即しているのだ。

この場合、嘘との結びつきを断ち切ることが、心を閉じている相手を、心のクローゼットから出させる(出て来てくれる) 可能性もある。

「明らかに自殺を防ぐことを扱っているが、それが唯一の目標ではない。それは、あなたを含め、誰もが誇りに思えない(思っていない)何かを皆んな持っているというメッセージを送っているので、(辛い)物事を手放すようにしてください。」

もう少しツッコんで解説すると、心停止または呼吸停止になりそうな患者のための医学用語/俗語Codeが出て来ている、。これは、病院での「コードブルー」の短い言い方に由来しているわけだ。このことから 「ねえ、AEDの準備をして…」は救急の現場が目に浮かぶだろう。

歌詞の主人公は、彼の自殺しようとしてる友人に対して、彼が自身の人生を生きて、自らを幸せにするために。どこかに行くべきだと話している。これが、この2人がもうお互いを会えなくなることを意味しているとしても、主人公は、彼が生きているのを見る方が価値があるからだ。生きていて欲しいからだ。

これより不吉な表現は、主人公が彼の友人が自殺に近づいていることに自分が加担してしまったと感じて、謝罪していることだ。自分のせい?とまで感じてる様な感じがある。

つまり「君は、俺がしたことを許す必要はなく、ただ君の命を(自分で) 奪わないでください」と彼に言っている。自ら命を絶たないでと、何回も訴えているのはそのせいもある。

この曲は、自殺行為に焦点を当てているが、より広いメッセージは、人間の思いやりに関するもの、そうStephenが語っているように、傷ついている者の気持ちを大切に、大切に、思いやっている歌なのだ。

二度と会うことがなくても、生きていて欲しい。そう願う主人公。

大切な友と離れてしまうのは嫌だけど、生きていてくれさえすれば良い。

自分より相手を思いやる気持ち。

究極の愛だ。

誰かが誰かを大切に思い、行動し、言葉をかけ、動く、この行為より尊いモノはないと思う。

ただ寄り添うだけで良い。

一人ではないことを傷ついた友に知らせたい。

知らせるべきだ。

ただ生きていて欲しい。

この熱い想いが生まれた場所…

それこそが、この世の「楽園」だ。

Third Eye Blind is an American rock band formed in San Francisco, California, in 1993. After years of lineup changes in the early and mid-1990s, the songwriting duo of Stephan Jenkins and Kevin Cadogan signed the band’s first major-label recording contract with Elektra Records in 1996. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1997, with the band largely consisting of Jenkins (vocals, rhythm guitar), Cadogan (lead guitar), Arion Salazar (bass guitar), and Brad Hargreaves (drums). Shortly after the release of the band’s second album in 1999, Blue, with the same line-up, Cadogan was released from the band under controversial circumstances.

The song was recorded and mixed in and around San Francisco at Toast Studios, Skywalker Ranch, H.O.S., and The Site by Valentine. An alternative rock and acoustic power pop song, “Jumper” is a lament centrally inspired by the suicide of a bullied gay teenager. However, Jenkins also was inspired by his own dysfunctional experiences when growing up. The instrumentation used in the song includes guitars, keyboards, and a piano.

“Jumper” received positive reviews from music critics. The song reached number five on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number nine on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. “Jumper” was also successful in Canada, climbing to number 10 on the RPM Top Singles chart.

My parents divorced, and that hurt me. We were poor and I went to a rich high school. I was dyslexic and had attention deficit disorder, which I still have. So I carried all these things with me. One afternoon, I had this epiphany. I said ‘You know what? I don’t have it all together. I come from stuff that was really difficult, and that’s me. That’s who I am.’ I embraced that. There’s a line in the song that says, ‘Everyone’s got to face down the demons/Maybe today we can put the past away.’ It’s very much a song about putting the past away.”

“Jumper” was written solely by frontman Stephan Jenkins. Jenkins intended to write a song about the perils of bullying, with the song’s narrative focusing on a “friend who’s gay jumping off a bridge and killing themselves.” This narrative was inspired by a friend of band manager Eric Godtland who committed suicide in high school due to bullying he endured for his sexuality. In an interview with SongFacts, Jenkins said that the concept of the song was further developed through his own alienating childhood experiences. Despite being written as a lament, Jenkins expressed that a broader message of “Jumper” is to have an understanding and compassion for one another. He further explained the meaning of the song:

“Jumper” is about a guy who jumped off the Coronado Bridge and killed himself. It’s kind of a noir-inspired story, and the point was if we have more understanding for each other, then we might give each other credit. And if you don’t want to see me again, I’d understand. Sometimes when you really help people and you make yourself vulnerable and they can’t really see you [afterwards]. I had a friend who was raped and she needed money for medical care. and she was ashamed and couldn’t talk to her parents about it… basically, after I helped her she didn’t want to see me. She gave a bit too much of herself. I understood that.

Since the release of “Jumper,” Jenkins has identified that the meaning of the song has changed for many listeners. He felt that the song’s meaning was not entirely understood upon release, although “[n]ow it has this real levity. It’s this huge moment of release for the audience.” Lyndsey Parker from Yahoo! Entertainment designated the song as an “anti-bullying anthem,” which prompted Jenkins to acknowledge that he believes “Jumper” has resonated among many LGBT listeners.

gone to code=　A medical term/slang for a patient who is about to go in cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest.

This song clearly does deal with preventing suicide, but that isn’t its only goal. It attempts to send out the message that everyone has something they’re not proud of, including you, so try to just let things go.

“It’s not just a song about some guy offing himself. Jumper’s really about understanding. Everyone carries demons around, they carry some sort of scar around. The message of Jumper is that there comes a time when you have to put the past away.” -Lead singer Stephan Jenkins

The narrator tells his suicidal friend that he should go live his life and go somewhere that makes him happy. Even if this means these two can’t see each other anymore, it’s worth it to the narrator to see him alive.

The more sinister way to look at this is that the narrator feels that he contributed towards his friend being close to suicide, and is apologizing. He is telling him that you don’t have to forgive me for what I’ve done, just don’t take your life.
