今日はハロウィンだから、ちょっとそれらしい曲を和訳＆解説しちゃおっ。
去年はハロウィンらしくBootsy の【Bootsy Collins& Buckethead /Monster Mash】にしたので、今年は黄泉の国から皆さんいらっしゃるから、ちょい捻ってコレにしてみようかな(笑)？
オーストラリアを代表する彼らのノリの良いこの曲は、ジャンルを問わず多くのアーティスト達にカヴァーされて来たから、AC/DCを知らなくてもこの曲は聞いたことあると思う。
なきBon Scottの歌声で貴方もハイウェイを突っ走りたくなるだろう。

今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、AC/DCの1979年にリリースした6th スタジオ・アルバム『Highway to Hell』からの同名タイトル『Highway to Hell』(邦題: 地獄のハイウェイ)。

“Highway to Hell” is a song by Australian rock band AC/DC. It is the opening track of their 1979 album Highway to Hell. It was initially released as a single in 1979.
Highway to Hell is the sixth studio album by AC/DC, released on 27 July 1979. It was the band’s fifth studio album released internationally and the sixth to be released in Australia. It was the last album featuring lead singer Bon Scott, who died early the following year on 19 February 1980.

Angus Youngのカッコイイギターと可愛い動きについ目が行ってしまうけど、初代ヴォーカリストのBon Scott のしゃがれた個性的な歌声も魅力的なのよね。
現在のヴォーカリストBrian Johnsonもしゃがれ声だけど、Bonの方がちょっとだけ男臭い感じがする。
どちらもAC/DCにピッタリ合うフロントマンだから、甲乙つけ難い。
すてきだなあ、とLyraが思うのは、Bonが亡くなってもクレジットに書かれている事。
絆があるって素敵。
男らしいと思うし、彼の曲がダサいくらいに人間臭くて愛に溢れているのは、そういうハートを大切にする所だと思う。

このアルバム【Highway to Hell】は、メジャーデビューの第6作目で、アメリカではビルボード最高位17位でプラチナ・ディスクを、イギリスでもゴールド・ディスクを獲得した大ヒットアルバムだ。
それもタイトル曲であるこの曲がバカ売れしたからだろう。
ただ翌年1980年2月に（メジャー・デビュー後の）初代ヴォーカリストであり、このアルバムのヴォーカリストのBon Scottボン・スコットが急死し遺作となった為、バンドとしは、重要な位置を占めるアルバムだろう。
『Rolling Stones 誌が選ぶオールタイム・ベストアルバム500』で200位。
日本では、2000年代から国内盤が入手しづらい状態が続いていたが、2007年12月に紙ジャケ復刻され再発売されたり、2020年代の現在も世界中で愛されている名盤ですね。

重厚なリフと地獄というワードから暗いイメージが占めてしまう【Highway to Hell】だけど、実際の全体像は、もっと気楽もので、「生きてるなら、楽しもうぜ」という曲なのです。
AC/DCらしいユーモアと、楽しさを最優先した生き方を誇らしげに歌っているわけ。
ただ皮肉なことに、Bon Scottが自分の人生が、地獄への高速道路に匹敵するワイルドな乗り物であるとサビで歌っているこのAC/DCの代表曲をリリースしだ翌年に亡くなってしまったことが、奇妙だし、残念であり、バンドの大きな損失になってしまったのです。
また多くの人が、この曲が同じ時期にリリースされた、記念碑的なロック曲と同じものを共有していることに気づいていると思う。
あのLed Zeppelin (The Battle of Evermore】解説 限りなき戦い)の【StairwayToHeaven】のことだ。
大ヒット曲と永遠の常緑樹の両方で、比喩的には階段/高速道路+天国/地獄と音楽の両方で対比しているのがわかる。
あちらは、長くて緩やかなバラードで、こちらは、アップテンポで打撃を与えてくるけど、コンパクトにまとまった短いロックソング、、、相反する２つの曲にLyraは、何か因果関係を感じてしまうのです。

今、現在もRockしてるAC/DC。
2003年『ロックの殿堂』入り、
2010年度『グラミー賞』受賞。
ローリング・ストーン誌選定「歴史上最も偉大な100組」第72位。
ウォール・ストリート・ジャーナルの「史上最も人気のある100のロックバンド」6位と全世界で有名なロックバンド に上り詰めた。
素晴らしい音楽と、楽しませてくれる個性に感謝したい。
そして長生きしてほしいと応援している。
【Highway to Hell】は、邦題は「地獄のハイウェイ」だが、直訳したら実際は「地獄行きのハイウェイ」であり。曲全体の意味としては、地獄を歌うくらい歌ではなく、「自堕落に生きるのも良いもんだぜ。気楽に行けよ、楽しめ」とユーモアを混ぜて歌っている曲なのだ。
まあ、自堕落すぎるとそれこそヤバいことになるが、、、。
この曲の共作者である亡くなったヴォーカリストのBon Scottは、予言のような、遺言めいた言葉を残していて、何ともやるせない。
予感していたのだろうか？
「俺は、13年間もロードに出ている。飛行機、ホテル、グルーピー、酒…それらはすべて、人間から何かをこすり落として行くんだよ」

For all it’s heavy riffing and dark imagery, “Highway to Hell” is a depiction of something altogether more lighthearted. A typical move, considering the overriding sense of humor and fun the band proudly held onto.
Bon Scott sings about how his life is a wild ride comparable to a highway to Hell (in a bit of tragic irony, he died by drinking himself to death a year after the album’s release).
Released as the first single off the album, it is one of AC/DC’s most popular and famous tracks, it has been played at almost all of AC/DC’s live shows since its release.
A lot of people have noticed the duality this song shares with another monumental rock song from the same time period; Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven”. Both huge hits and eternal evergreens, they contradict each other both metaphorically Stairway/highway + heaven/hell and musically. One being a long soft ballad, that other being an uptempo, hard-hitting short rock song.
A premunition/last will by song co-writer and singer Bon Scott (who inded died a few years later) –
I’ve been on the road for 13 years; Planes, hotels, groupies, booze … they all scrape something from you.
“Highway to Hell” was produced by Mutt Lange as part of the album by the same name, and his work is regarded as a significant factor in delivering one of the classic AC/DC albums, the emergence of the double-guitar sound, which was later perfected on Back in Black, and improved backing vocals with Malcolm Young, joined by Cliff Williams for the first time.
