先月5月13日がBucketheadのBirthday だったので、お祝いを兼ねて、彼が参加してる曲を紹介しようと思い、和訳していたのが、このファンキーな味付けをされたオドロオドロシイ曲。

色々上げたい曲を優先していたら、月日が経ってしまった〜。

今日はファンキーな曲を聞きたいのもあり、このファンク・Godの1人、Bootsyとのコラボ作品にしちゃいました。

Bucketheadって、System of the Dawn やGuns N’Rosesと一緒にやって来たメタルギタリストとして有名。だけれど実は、Funk界の仕事もめちゃくちゃやっているジャンル関係なく、なんでもやれちゃう人。

その凄さを一緒に堪能しましょう。

今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、アメリカ合衆国カリフォルニア州ポモラ出身のギタリスト、作曲家、ミュージシャン、画家であるBuckethead バケットヘッド　(本名：Brian Carroll ブライアン・キャロル）、1969年5月13日 – ）。

Iggy PopやMike Pattonとのコラボレーションを始め、2000年から4年間Guns N’Roses に在籍していたことでも有名である。

“Monster Mash” is a 1962 novelty song by Bobby “Boris” Pickett. The song was released as a single on Gary S. Paxton’s Garpax Records label in August 1962 along with a full-length LP called The Original Monster Mash, which contained several other monster-themed tunes. The “Monster Mash” single was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on October 20–27 of that year, just before Halloween. It has been a perennial holiday favorite ever since.

In 2019, Bootsy Collins and Buckethead released their “Bootsy & Buckethead Monster Mash” musical video on YouTube.

【Monster  Mash】は、BucketheadとBootsyのプロジェクトの一環としてのシングルだが、オリジナルではなくカヴァー。

1962年8月25日にノヴェルティー・ソングとして、Bobby”Boris” Pickettが作った曲である。フルLPとしては、『The Original Monster Mash』が、他のモンスターを扱った曲と一緒に収録されて、アルバムリリースされた。

特にこの曲は大人気でビルボード100で10月20〜27日までNo.１を記録したと言うから凄い。今では四季を跨いで聞かれる、アメリカではメジャーなモンスターソングになっている。

その為カヴァーするアーティストも多く、Misfitsを始め、the Beach Boys,　Alvin And The Chipmunks, Vincent Price などなど、たくさんのアーティストが、面白いアレンジをしている。

今回は、Funk God と言っても良いくらいファンク界で一番のベーシスト Bootsy Collinsと、メタルやプログレ界で様々なアーティストとプレイして来たBucketheadがEmmaline Campbellをヴォーカリストに据えて、【Monster Mash】のファンクヴァージョンをしている、と言うのが新しい試みだと思う。

ビデオもこれに合わせて、Ouiwey Collinsが監督。狼男やドラキュラなどが出演してダンスしているのは、Bootsyの好みなのかもしれない。

何故なら【Monster Mash】は、小さい時から聴いてきた、Bootsyの気に入りの曲だからだ。

「11才の時からBoris Karloff ジャンキーみたいなファンなんだよ。Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney and Vincent Priceとかあらゆるモンスターが俺のヒーローだったんだ。

Bobby “Boris” Pickett が【Monster Mash】をレコーディングしたって聞いて、あれからこの曲はヒーローのテーマソングになった。だからこれをレコーディングしたんだ。Bucketheadと話している時に、この時代の話が出てね。で最後には、待ってなんかいられねぇぜ、って言っちまったよ。一緒に今すぐぶっ潰そうぜ！ってね。そうして俺はある夜遅くに、俺様の研究室に行ったんだ。ちょいとばかりに一気にファンクして、ブーン！て出来上がりさ！」

 

モンスター愛から生まれた共演だからHappyなムードが漂っているのだ。

長年の夢が叶ってBootsyもいつもよりFunked Upしていて、見てると元気が出てくるね。

大好きなBootsy ネタは、また改めてFunkyな曲を紹介する時に、Funkらしく濃〜く、やりましょう w 。

ベースのBucketheadを知らない人の為に、、、

彼は、ソロ・アルバムをリリースする以外にも、今紹介した Bootsy Collinsとやったり、ベーシストのBill Laswellビル・ラズウェル、メタルバンドのSystem of a Down システム・オブ・ア・ダウンの　Serj Tankian　サージ・タンキアンとのコラボレーション・アルバムをリリースしていて、どこに行っても職人技をバシッと決めている、見た目とは違う(笑)、凄腕ミュージシャンである。

Bucket  headが凄いのは、あらゆるジャンルを軽々とこなしてしまうところ。

派手なギターも聴かせるし、バックに回る事もできる、ある意味、臨機応変に何でもこなせる、、、つまり、それだけ実力があると言うこと。

その癖、ステージを降りてインタビューなどでは、一切言葉を発しない変わり者。

その場合、一番仲が良い友人のハービィーが通訳するから不思議。

頭には、ケンタッキーフライドチキンの紙バケツを良くかぶっていて、最近では、無地の白いバケツに変わっだが、いまだにバケツ頭が続いている。

Revolver の雑誌インタビューで、Ozzy Osbourneが、自分が主催者する有名フェスのオズフェストで、Buckethead に演奏依頼したが、「変装せずに演奏すること」を条件にした為、拒否されたと言っている。

それに、ネタなのかもしれないが、鶏小屋で鶏とともに育ったと言い張っていて、マスクをしているのは、「狼に襲われて大きな傷を負っているのを隠す為」と宣う、、、一体、ふざけてるのか、隠したい過去があるのか、ただ単に自分に自信がないのか？気になる人よね。家族に迷惑かけたくないのかな？

2000年から4年間は、先程話したように、Guns N’Rosesガンズ・アンド・ローゼズに加入していて、アルバム『Chinese Democracy』(2008)の製作にも参加しているが、その前に、2004年に個人的な事情で、脱退。

「Death Cube K」名義でも活動していて、この名前は、Bucketheadのアナグラムであり、Sonyとの契約において争っている時に使っていた。

因みに、この名前をSF作家であるウィリアム・ギブスンが、作品「あいどる」中で酒場の名称として拝借している。彼もBucketheadのファンなのだろう。

2005年、Buckethead & Friends 名義で『エンター・ザ・チキン』というアルバムをリリース。(Death By Stereoのシンガーであるエフレム・シュルツらとのグループ。)

メインで使用している白い改造レスポールには「キルスイッチ」と呼ばれ、回路を遮断し音をミュートするスイッチが搭載。その為、キルスイッチを用いた独特の奏法をする時もある。

数年前、生命を脅かす深刻な心臓病を患っていることを「Coming Alive Podcast」出演時にカミングアウトしたBuckethead。

心臓の鼓動のリズムが一定でなくなる慢性の不整脈の問題だそう。

最近その症状が激しく出たため病院行くと医者から「もう少しで脳卒中を起こすところだった」と言われたらしい。

その為、不整脈の治療方法である、アブレーション治療（カテーテルという管を心臓内に入れて、不整脈の原因となっている部分に通電を加えて焼灼する治療法）を行ったが、効果がなかったようで、現在は薬を投与中。

酷い時は「部屋を歩くことさえ難しい」くて、歩行なども困難になってきていると打ち明けた。

彼自身は、音楽活動を休むつもりはなく、その治療を受けた翌日、友人とレコーディングしたらしい。

「僕は明日を迎えることができた、誰もが迎えることができたが、僕にはこれはヘヴィな経験だ。僕は今プレイしたい、そして僕はこの経験をプレイしたいんだ」と語るBuckethead。

彼の健康が早く戻る治療が開発出来たら、と願うばかり。

そして、闘病中でもこれだけのパワーと素晴らしいプレイを見せてくれるBucketheadにエールを送りたい。

Collins and Buckethead’s cover of the “Monster Mash” also comes with a equally ridiculous video, directed by Ouiwey Collins, which features a packed cast of ghosts, ghouls, vampires, Frankenstein monsters and, because why not, a skeleton shredding a keytar.

 

 

In a statement, Collins explained his life-long love of the “Monster Mash” and how he and Buckethead decided to cover the song: “I believe I was 11 years old and was a big Boris Karloff fan-junkie. In fact, Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney and Vincent Price — all the big monsters — were my heroes. When I heard ‘Monster Mash’ recorded by Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett in 1962, it became my all-time superhero theme song. I always wanted to record it, and do something special with it. Buckethead and I have been talking about it for over a decade, and I finally said we can’t wait any longer — let’s do the mash now! So I went to my lab late one night and funked some sheet up, and, boom!”

Brian Patrick Carroll (born May 13, 1969), known professionally as Buckethead, is an American multi-instrumental musician who has received critical acclaim for his innovative electric guitar playing. His music spanned many genres, including progressive metal, funk, blues, bluegrass, ambient, and avant-garde music. He performs primarily as a solo artist, though he has collaborated extensively with a wide variety of high-profile artists such as Bill Laswell, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Iggy Pop, Les Claypool, Serj Tankian, Bill Moseley, Mike Patton, Viggo Mortensen, That 1 Guy, and Bassnectar, and was a member of Guns N’ Roses from 2000 to 2004.
