サイケデリックロック好きだからか？

選ぶ映画の中には必ずステキなPsychdelic Rockが使われている。

映画好きの中にはRockを聴かない、興味がないと言う人が多いのに(ブログを通じて知り合い発見し) 驚いてしまった。

逆にRock好きには映画好きが多い。

何故なら、監督さんにRock好きが多いから自然とシンパシーを感じるからだろう。

今日は Lyraが好きな曲であり、色々な映画に使用されて来た曲を和訳しちゃお！

今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのはアメリカ合衆国カリフォルニア州サンホセで結成されたサイケデリックロックバンド、Count Five カウントファイブ。

サイケデリックロックであり、ガレージロックや、元祖パンクロックと言われているバンドである。

今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、Count Fiveのデビューアルバムに収録されている曲で同タイトルの【Psychotic Reaction】(1966年6月リリース)。

Count Five was an American garage rock band, formed in San Jose, California in 1964, best known for their hit single “Psychotic Reaction”.

“Psychotic Reaction” is a song by the American garage rock band Count Five, released in June 1966 on their debut studio album of the same name. It peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was among the first successful acid (or psychedelic) rock songs, containing the characteristics that would come to define acid rock: the use of feedback and distortion replacing early rock music’s more melodic electric guitars. In Canada, the song reached No. 3 on October 31, 1966.

The song was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of the “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll”. In 2014, the song placed seventh on Paste‘s list of the “50 Best Garage Rock Songs of All Time”.

大好きな映画の１つがドーン！と出ているから、次にも、掲載しておきま〜 すっ。

 

 

知る人ぞ知る、表向きは「お洒落なサイケデリックムービー」であり、実は「エロムービー」で、Lyraにとっては「Mind Trip Movie」の【Candy】が前半にガツンと出ているので、ビデオを２つも載せちゃいました。

映画見た人じゃないと分からないかもしれませんが、【Candy】の内容とこのCount Fiveの 【Psychotic Reaction】の歌詞の内容とは全く関係ないですね。

このミュージック・ビデオは、サイケデリックロックがもてはやされていた時代の映画を寄せ集めしたコラージュ・ビデオになっている。

その中でも１番好きなのがCandy。

映画のストーリーに関しては、また別の機会にこのブログで紹介するとして(いつも長くなり過ぎちゃうから)、、、

あの時代のサウンド丸出しで、 John “Mouse” Michalski のファズギターがたまらなくナイス！

TV出演したビデオの方に写るメンバーが、地味だからこのサウンドのイカレタ感じと印象が全く違うのでビックリしたー。

人は見かけによらない？

いや、よる、よるって(笑)。

この時期は、まだブリティッシュ・インベイジョン丸出しの小綺麗なスーツ着てるだけ。

惑わされてはダメよーん。

歌詞を知ったら納得でしょ？

フリーラブの時代にしては、めっちゃ一途な歌詞なんだけど、【Psychotic Reaction】だよ、タイトル？

めっちゃコワ〜イ！

1964年、ファズギターの John “Mouse” Michalski と ベースギターの Roy Chaney の 2人が高校の同級生だったこともあり、結成したのが始まり。

当時のバンド名は、The Citations。

主に、サーフグループだったが、おりしもBritish Invasion が巻き起こっている時代。

彼らは、もろ影響を受けて音楽性の方向転換を図る。

その為にメンバーが何回か変わったが、ドラムスの Craig “Butch” Atkinson、 ヴォーカル＆ ギターの John “Sean” Byrne 、ハーモニカの Kenn Ellner のラインナップで、1966年にメジャーデビュー。

この【Psychotic Reaction】をリリースして、大ヒットしたのである。

当時、この曲はイギリスのバンド Yard Birds の解答と言われていた。

Yard Birdsの影響が如実に分かる曲が多いのが特徴なバンドだけど、この【Psychotic Reaction】だけは別格！

サイケデリックであり、ガレージバンドの瞬発力もあって、パンクのストレートさもある、、、それこそイカレタ最高な曲。

60年代を象徴するサイケデリックさが受けて、ヒッピーやビートニクを感じさせる映画やドラマにBGMとして数多く使われて来たのもうなづける。

その中でもLyraが印象強いと思うのは、大好きな映画だからかもしれないが、Gas Van Santの 【Drugstore Cowboy】でのシーン。

主人公たちの彷徨い、暴走し、迷走する人格と行動に合っていたと感じるからだ。

たしかにジャンキーは精神的に病んで肉体も蝕まれて行くのだから、この曲のサウンドには合っている。

ノリが良い曲だから、ダンスするのにピッタリな明るい曲だと思う人が多いと思う。

だが、この歌詞からして異常者にも取れる。タイトルが精神異常者の反応、て直訳だとヤバイ。

まあ、軽く見たとしても、どうにもならない彼女への気持ちを切なく歌っている裏で何か企んでそう、、、。

タイトルのせいだよね。

普通に、好きなあの子にベタ惚れだ、曲を、たったワンフレーズで、過剰な愛、異常な愛情にしてしまうんだから、上手いなあとLyraは思ったの。

だから、初めは「君が好き」みたいに純粋に好きと訳して、段々、おかしくなって激しい感じに和訳しました。

切ない想いが激しくなるとこんな感じなるんでしょう。

基本、激しいくらいが丁度いいと考えているLyraなので、これくらいフッツー。

Psychotic Reaction” is a psychedelic garage-rock classic about losing your mind due to heartache. The song reached #5 in September 1966, about 10 years before “punk rock” entered into the popular vernacular.

“Psychotic Reaction” was written by Count Five ’s Irish singer and guitarist John “Sean” Byrne. Byrne was a student at San Jose City College, where he got the idea for the title from a health class.

At first, the song didn’t do much on the charts, but then LA’s influential KRLA started spinning the track. The first time Byrne heard it on the radio, he burst out the front door and ran up and down the street.

While the Count Five never enjoyed another major hit, “Psychotic Reaction” was enough to ensure their legacy .It’s on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of the “500 Songs That Shaped Rock,” and it’s been covered by the likes of Tom Petty and garage disciples the Cramps.

In 1971, two years after the band split up, prominent rock critic Lester Bangs wrote an essay called “Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung.” In the article, Bangs recalled buying the band’s album and discussed a series of follow-up LPs that never actually existed.

Things might’ve turned out different for the Count Five if the band hadn’t turned down millions in tour bookings to go back to school. Byrne wound up majoring in accounting, and he only ever reformed the Count Five for one night in 1986.

This song appears in the games Battlefield Vietnam(2004) Mafia 3 (2016) and Far Cry 5 (2018)

“Psychotic Reaction” has been featured in films such as Marek Kanievska’s Less Than Zero (1987), Gus Van Sant’s Drugstore Cowboy (1989), Paul Schrader´s Auto Focus (2002) and Randall Miller´s CBGB(2013), and has done very well on Classic Rock radio.

The song is also featured in the second-season episode “Bad Friend” from the HBO series Girls.

The song is also featured in an IKEA television advert on UK’s Channel 4 (May 2019)
