“Blasphemous Rumours” /”Somebody” is Depeche Mode’s twelfth UK single and first double A-side single, released on 29 October 1984.

Some Great Reward is the fourth studio album by English electronic music band Depeche Mode. It was released on 24 September 1984 by Mute Records. The album peaked at number five in the United Kingdom and number 51 in the United States, and was supported by the Some Great Reward Tour.

可愛いMartin〜。

いつも可愛いけれど、若い時のMartinは特に、可愛さが倍増しで、ルックスが天使みたい〜。

クルクル巻き毛のブロンドに、円な瞳がそう思わせるの。

それに昔のMartinは特に、上半身裸が多かったのもある〜( ^ω^ )。

エロスと美と信仰が入り混じった作品が、彼の作り出す楽曲の特徴。

そして美しい物語なのだ。

それ故に、彼の詩の世界観が、ヨーロッパで、現在のゴシックの神と言われている所以だと思う。

インタビューで、このアルバムについて聞かれた時、Martinは、「今度のアルバムは、完璧に人間味のあるものにしようと思うんだ。Alan が弾くピアノに、Dave が歌い、Foster X15でテープを演奏するAndy。それはそれぞれ全く異なるサウンドになるだろう」と語っていた。

デジタルサウンドが、Depeche Modeのパブリックイメージであり、醍醐味である。

それを薄めて人間味を与えようとしているのが、このアルバムの狙いであり、それが彼らには新鮮で、新しい発明みたいなものだったにちがいない。

本当にこの曲は人間味が溢れいている美しいバラードになっている。

2006年にリマスターされたCD/DVDの『Some Great  Reward』の記録の中で、ハンナスタジオで、Daveがこの曲を練習しているのが見られるから、時間がある方は見てみてちょ。

この【Somebody】の場合は、Daveが練習して色々試したが、イマイチしっくり来なかった模様、、、

Daniel Miller「誰がどのようにして録音したかには、色々物語がたくさんあるんだ。Daveは試してみたんだが上手く行かなかったのかな。Martinが自分の声で歌う方がピッタリ来る曲をかいてしまうこともある、てことだね。」と当時のレコーディングについてDVDで語っている。

たまたまそう言う偶発的な事もあると思う。

メンバーのAndy Fletcherも「Martinの声の方が適していたってだけさ。それに個人的な意味もあってだったかもしれない」と言っていて、

Alan Wilderも「多分アルバムのアコースティック・パフォーマンストラックと呼んだものが最初だった。マーティンは、実際それを裸で歌ってたんだよ。それは、彼自身がやった事だっだからね(笑)。僕はピアノを弾いていたんだ。大きなスタジオ2ホールで、彼と僕だけで録音してたら、いきなり脱いだんだよ」

Lyraは、曲は生き物だと思っているから、曲が、自分自身を上手くいかしてもらえる場所を探して、行き場所を選択すると思う。

だから、このエピソードは凄く納得してしまった。

曲がMartinに歌って欲しかったのだ。

それに、多分Daveのセクシーな歌声だと官能的になってしまう気がする。

だってDave Gahanの声は、男らしくて、官能的すぎるからね。

Melody Makerとのインタビューで、雑誌側が「【Some Great Reward】は、「反愛」の歌に支配されていますね。それに、Martinからは、より「No」と強調されているみたいです」と言われて、Martinはこう答えている。

Martin「違うよ。【Somebody】は、単純に「愛している」と言う歌だよ。「反愛」の歌じゃない。この曲は、ある種、Jonathan Richmanの基本に戻る理論に基づいている曲さ。全部一緒に行ったのが、サウンドを良くするために、3テイク必要だったんだ。必要最低限のものしか使っていないしね。俺なんて雰囲気を出すために、狭い録音部屋で、素っ裸で歌ったんだからね。他の人達は、俺がちゃんとやれてるかチェックするために、女性のテープの編集する人を階下に送る作戦をしたくらいだよ」と、真剣なラブソングだと強調している。

だから、この歌は、Martinの理想の恋人、もしくは、こんな人と付き合いたいな、って希望を話している歌なんだと思う。

Lyraには、少年みたいで可愛らしいと思える。

男の本音の歌詞だから好き。

それに、このノーブルさは、Martinの繊細なビブラート気味の声の方が向いていると思う。

この素っ裸エピソードについて、VocalのDaveも1984年のBBCで語っている、、、

「俺たちワイヤーかなんかを調べさせるフリして、ドイツ人の編集のSteffiをMartinの所へ行かせたんだ。Martinは彼女が降りて来たのを知らないけど、俺たちは奴が素っ裸になってるのが分かっていたからね。そして、彼女があいつのところに降りてった時に、俺ら、ちょっと悲鳴をあげちゃったよね。Martinはと言うと、『ええーっと、ええと、ごめん』だってさ。」

Martinが雰囲気を出すために、素っ裸で歌うってのは凄く理解できる。

いつも真面目すぎるくらいに、取り組む彼らしい。

でも自分の裸を女性に見られて、「ええーっと、ごめん」って恥ずかしがるってのが、ビックリ！

裸なんて見られても平気だと思っていたから　(いつもMartinは、ステージで上半身裸にホットパンツ姿やSMのボンテージなど着ていたから)、このシャイさが、凄く新鮮。

こんな風に、Martinがシャイだと、より好きになってまう〜w

それに、この少年ぽい【Somebody】の歌詞が、本当にMartinの本音なんだ、と感じるエピソードだと思った。

だが時が経過した、1989年4月の【101】の発売でのインタビューでは、また違うことをMartinは、言っている。

Martin「僕はもうこの曲は好きじゃないんだ。振り返って見ると、凄くソフトで優し過ぎると思うんだ。僕の歌の殆どは、ナイーブではない。僕はいつも曲を、ある時点で予期しない方向転換をするやり方で、アレンジしている。愛情のある関係なのに、うまくいかない可能性がある時、僕は疑いを含む方が好みなのさ」

 

Martinが、大人になったからか？

はたまた、理想が叶うことはないと痛い目に遭いすぎて諦めたのか？

結婚したり離婚したりしたから？

または、シャイだから照れ隠しか？

 

 

いずれにせよ、Martinの理想の女性は、この【Somebody】で、歌われている、人生を分かち合えて、自分の話を(間違った見解の時でも)ちゃんと聞いてくれて、理解してくれる女性が理想なのだ。

でもこれってMartinだけじゃなくて、男女問わずの理想でしょう？

まあ、途中自分でも理解しているれしい変態さには、全員は当てはまらないけど(笑)、、、

どんな時も自分の味方で理解してくれるひとと誰しもが付き合いたい、と思うもの。

Martinが、この曲に込めた想いは、全世界の老若男女の共感を得られる理想なのです。

Lyraもこんな良い女になりたい。

だが、人生を分かち合える人でいつも味方でいて、と言ってる癖に、「束縛されたくない」ってのは無理な話よね。

わがまま？

どちらかになるよ、現実は。

人生を分かち合える人とは、分かり合える時間を共有しなきゃ成立しないから、束縛はされちゃう。

逆に束縛されない関係ならば、気楽だが、いて欲しい時には来てくれないだろうし、束縛されない代わりにほったらかしになりますわよ。

どちらかに偏るのは確か。

それが、現実よ。

信頼関係って縛りありきだわ。

ならばLyraは、「寝るときは

誰かに側にいて欲しいよ

ってかしのまんま。

束縛されてがんじがらめになることばかりだったけど、それで良い。

While Depeche Mode were working on Some Great Reward at Hansa Studios, Martin Gore told the November 1984 issue of International Musician And Recording World: “We’re going to go for a completely human feel on that one. Just a piano played by Alan and Dave singing and Andy playing tapes on the Fostex X15. It’ll be very different.”

In the documentary on the 2006 remaster CD/DVD of ‘Some Great Reward’, you can see footage of Dave studying this song at Hansa Studios.

Quotes from the documentary on the DVD of the Some Great Reward remaster from 2006:

Daniel Miller: “There are a lot of stories about how Somebody was recorded. It might as well have been that Dave tried it and it didn’t work out. There’s bound to be a couple of songs that Martin writes for the album where it works better with his voice.”

Andy Fletcher: “It was really down to two things: If we thought it suited Martin’s voice more, or if they were of a more personal nature, like Somebody.”

Alan Wilder: “It was probably the first of what you’d call an acoustic performed track on an album. In fact, Martin sang it naked. It was his call. [laughs] I turned the piano away as I was playing, but yeah, we recorded it live, just him and me, in the big studio 2 hall, and he stripped off for that one.”

From the 1984-09-22 issue of Melody Maker:

Suggesting that ‘Some Great Reward’ is dominated by “anti-love” songs brings a considered but emphatic “No” from Martin.

Martin: ‘Somebody’ is pretty much a straightforward ‘I love you’ song if you like, certainly not an anti-love song. […] The song is based on a sort of Jonathan Richman back-to-basics theory. It’s performed all together – it just needed three takes, mainly to get the sound okay – and really uses the bare essentials. In fact I sang it completely naked in the cellar of the studio which we use for ambiance, and the others sent the female tape op downstairs while I was doing it to ‘check the connections’.”

Dave told BBC Radio in 1984:

“We sent Steffi down there, who’s the girl taper in Germany, to check out some wires, and Martin, not knowing she was coming down and us knowing that Martin has stripped off, and then we heard a little shriek when she got down there, and Martin going “Eh, eh, sorry, eh…””

When Depeche Mode was interviewed about the songs on the ‘101’ CD for the April 1989 issue of French magazine ‘Best’, Martin Gore said (translated from French):

“I do not like this song anymore. Looking back on it, I think it’s too soft and tender. Most of my songs are not as naive. I usually arrange songs in such a way that they take an unexpected turn at some point. I prefer it to contain doubt, when it does not rule out the possibility that a loving relationship may go wrong.”

 

The verses to “Blasphemous Rumours” describe a 16-year-old girl who attempts suicide but fails. She experiences a religious revival but is killed in a car accident at age 18. The chorus uses these incidents to conclude, “I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumours / but I think that God’s got a sick sense of humour / and when I die, I expect to find him laughing.” Like other songs on Some Great Reward, the song uses a dense sound with extensive sampled percussion.

When Depeche Mode announced that they were planning to release “Blasphemous Rumours” as a single, pushback from the religious community resulted, and consequently, the band decided as a compromise to release the single as a double-A side with “Somebody.”

“Somebody”, which was sung by Martin Gore in the studio in the nude, includes one of Gore’s “little twists”, where the song builds as if it’s a song about finding your perfect love, only to have him reveal at the end “though things like this make me sick / in a case like this I’ll get away with it.”

 

When “Blasphemous Rumours” was almost banned by the BBC, the band agreed to the compromise of releasing the much less controversial “Somebody” as another ‘A-side’ on the same release. The single peaked at #16 in the UK, and did even better in Ireland peaking at #8.

Gore decided to sing the song himself instead of having frontman Dave Gahan do it.

Notable cover versions of “Somebody”

• American alternative rock band Veruca Salt covered the song for the 1998 Depeche Mode tribute album For the Masses.
• British band Ultra released their version of the song in 1999 as the B-side to the limited edition CD single of “Rescue Me”.
