が！最近、Grunge 熱が止まらないまま数ヶ月が経過。

毎晩、寝る前の Jimi Hendrix ジミ・ヘンドリックスがGrunge Bandに乗っ取られ気味なん。

で！「今夜はGrunge 関連をば…」なんて思ってたら、それを紹介する前に元祖をやらなきゃいけない、と天からのお告げがあった、、、ような、ないような(笑)。

50年以上のキャリアをもち、Chicken Shack チキン・シャック、Savoy Brown サヴォイ・ブラウンと並ぶブリティッシュ・ブルースロックの3大バンドと称された。

1970年代半ば以降、ソフトロック路線に転換して成功を収め、世界的な知名度を誇り、1978年『グラミー賞』受賞。1998年『ロックの殿堂』入り。

“Gold Dust Woman” is a song from the best-selling Fleetwood Mac album Rumours. It was written and sung by Stevie Nicks and released as a B-side to the “Don’t Stop” single (in the UK) and the “You Make Loving Fun” single (in the US).

次のはFleetwood  MacのLiveバージョンのビデオですうー。

Stevieがメチャ可愛い💕

音源がフォーキーな仕上がりで、イギリス民謡ぽくもあり不思議な世界観を醸し出していて好き。

じっくり聴くと改めて『Rumours』というアルバムは、完成度高い作品だと分かる。

長きに渡ってFleetwood Macが活動を続けられて来たのも(一時解散時期はあったが)、彼らの綿密に練られた音と、妥協しない完成度の高い作品を作り続けて来た証なのだと思う。

ギターの一音も、コーラスの掛け合いも決して無駄という言葉が全く見当たらないのだ。

それを考えると『Rumours』の方の【Gold Dust Woman】には、いつも通りギターをプレイし、Stevieを引き立てながらも存在感がある Lindsey Buckingham リンジー・バッキンガムがライブバージョンの方には居ないのが寂しい。

やはり、あのねちっこい彼の歌声がStevieのバックに似合う。

２人が長い間恋人同士だったからと言うだけじゃない。

生まれながらにして声質が合う２人。

だからファンとしては、上手いスタジオミュージシャンよりLindseyの癖の強さを見たくなってしまうのよね。

この【Gold Dust Woman】は、Stevie Nicks スティーヴィー・ニックスが作詞作曲した曲だ。

明け方、午前４:00 にレコーディングしていた時に完成した曲で、レコーディングは難航したらない。

Stevieがイマイチ乗らなかったからか？

ヴォーカルパートが納得いかず、何回も撮り直し。

その時にStevieが黒いスカーフを頭に巻いて、本物感情を出すために、思い出を蘇らせるためにそうやって歌った。

そして、「雰囲気を出すために録音室の灯りを暗くして、椅子を持っていき横にはティッシュと吸入器を置き、水分を補給しながらレコーディングした。」(ドラムのMick Fleetwood 談。)

そのお陰で８回目にして、Stevieの最高の歌声を録音出来たのである。

【Gold Dust Woman】は、ミステリアスなストーリーの歌だ。

物語性があり、古代と現代が織り混ざったかのような錯覚に陥ってしまう。

まるでSteven Kingの “Gunslinger” のようだと Lyraは、思う。

Gold Dust と言う言葉からして砂漠のような広大な土地に人間が彷徨っているみたいだし、黒衣の女が出て来たりとあの物語の世界に入り込んだみたい。

神か、先人か。

不思議な女が、屍のような女たち一人一人に忠告している声が、時空を超えて私たちに聞こえて来ているみたいだ。

実際は、チョッピリ毒を吐いている歌詞なんだと思う。

何故なら、これはある意味Stevieの嫌な女たちに対する皮肉った歌だからだ。

「私たちが、このレコーディングに入ってから長い時間が経っていたの。そこには、ドラッグもアルコールもないわ。あったのは、変なグルーピーみたいな女たちよ。私とChristy (キーボード&コーラスの Christine McVie クリスティン・マクヴィ)は、座っていたんだけど、、、嫌な奴を見るような目で私達をあいつらったら見てるのよ。そうしたら、誰かスタッフが入って来た途端、笑いかけて挨拶してんのよー。で、その後レコーディングに入って何回か取り直したけど、完成したわけよ」とStevieが話しているから、嫌な女達へのDISもプラスされたから、クールで強気な歌い方になったんだと思う。

迷えるもの、彷徨うものに対して、道を示している歌詞だから覇気が強い歌唱法が、絶対に合うと思うわ。

因みに「Gold Dust」は、Stevie曰く「コカイン」のこと。

「Gold Dust Womanは、本当に私らしい曲だわ。悪い人間の中で生きているような人、沢山のドラッグをやっているとか、悪いことをしようとしていたり、上手くドラッグをやりとおそうとしたりね、、、でもどうにか生きていこうとして、次の行動をしなきゃと行動を起こそうとしているのよ。」

Stevieは、スイも甘いも噛み締めて来た女性だ、、、と前にStevie Nicksのソロの曲を何回か書いて来た中でLyraは書いたけど、Stevieはある時期、重度のジャンキーになってしまった時期があった。

今は、リハビリ施設に入ったり、自らやめる事に成功してクリーンになったが、当時は相当苦しんだらしい。

「皆んなちょっとくらいやってるでしょ？ねぇ？私達は買ったりしないわ、そこらへんにあるんだもの。でも、それって非常に問題でもあるわ。何百年も蝕まれて来た人達もいたわけだし、、、私も何人か酷い状態の人々に出会ったもの。コカインをやりすぎた人やその行為に私は影響されたから、これを作曲し全て物語にしたの。」

皆んなちょっとくらいやったことあるじゃない？ってのがStevie らしくて笑ってしまった。

やらない人のが多いって。

Stevieの中で出来上がったのが、コカインは全く感じさせない、映画みたいな、小説みたいなこの壮大なストーリーなのだから、改めて姉さんの出来る仕事っぷりに感服してしまうわ。

Lyraは、Stevieが小さい時から好きだった。ずうっと聞いてきたのに全く古さを感じない。

それに、大人になっていくに連れて彼女の書いた詩が奥深いことを知って行く気がして、いつ聞いても飽きることがない。

本当はね、、、

今日あるRockな曲を皆んなに紹介するつもりだったの。

でも、こちらを聞いたら「あー、やっぱりStevie Nicks凄い！ Fleetwood Macってやっぱ職人だわ」と物凄く感動してしまって、何回も聞いてきたのに久しぶりだったこともあり、新鮮に思えたからこの【Gold Dust Woman】にしました。

感心してしまったのよね、Stevie 達に。

不思議な世界に引きずり込まれたみたいにね。

Stevieのしゃがれた低い声は、誰にもない唯一無二の声。

彼女の個性。

誰にも真似出来ない存在感に魅了される。

Lyraも自分の個性を発揮出来るようになりたいな。

誰かの為に、勇気を与えたり元気付けたり、役に立てる人間になりたい。

その為には、どんなに辛くても、痛くても、悲しくても、立ち上がって生きていかなきゃいけない。

負けない力を持たないとね。

大丈夫、私にはRockがあるわ。

どんな時も側にはRockがあった。

前に進んでいく。

ただそれだけ。

The 2004 two-disc special edition release of Rumours includes two demos of “Gold Dust Woman”. One demo features vocal melody and lyrics in the coda which would later be developed into the stand-alone single “If You Ever Did Believe” in 1997, which Nicks recorded with Sheryl Crow as part of the early sessions for her Trouble in Shangri-La album. The track was instead chosen as the theme song for the 1998 Warner Bros. film Practical Magicand is only available on the film’s soundtrack album.

The take chosen for release on the 1977 Rumours album was reportedly recorded at 4 a.m., after a long night of attempts in the studio. Just before and during that final take, Stevie Nicks had wrapped her head (though not mouth) with a black scarf, veiling her senses and tapping genuine memories and emotions. Many unusual instruments were used in the recording, including an electric harpsichord with a jet phaser, which was marked with tape so Mick Fleetwood could play the right notes. To accentuate Stevie’s vocals, Mick broke sheets of glass.  According to producer Ken Caillat “He was wearing goggles and coveralls — it was pretty funny. He just went mad, bashing glass with this big hammer. He tried to do it on cue, but it was difficult. Eventually, we said, ‘Just break the glass,’ and we fit it all in.”

When asked about the song in an interview with Courtney Love for Spin in October 1997, Nicks confirmed that “gold dust” was a metaphor for cocaine.

Everybody was doing a little bit–you know, we never bought it or anything, it was just around–and I think I had a real serious flask of what this stuff could be, of what it could do to you…And I really imagined that it could overtake everything, never thinking a million years that it would overtake me. I must have met a couple of people that I thought did too much coke and I must have been impressed by that. Because I made it into a whole story.

In an interview for VH1’s  Classic Album series, Nicks offered further insight into the song’s meaning:

“Gold Dust Woman” was my kind of symbolic look at somebody going through a bad relationship, doing a lot of drugs, and trying to make it. Trying to live. Trying to get through it.

Written by vocalist Stevie Nicks, “Gold Dust Woman” is a fusion of love-loss devastation and coping with an excess of drugs:

‘Gold Dust Woman’ was really my symbolic look about somebody going through a bad relationship, and doing a lot of drugs, and trying to… just make it, trying to live, trying to get through it to the next thing. – October 1997 Spin

In an article of Goldmine Magazine Mick Fleetwood described the recording process:

She did her first take of ‘Gold Dust Woman’ in a fully lit studio, and as take followed take, she began withdrawing into herself. So we dimmed the lights, brought her a chair, a supply of tissues, a Vicks inhaler, a box of lozenges for her sore throat, and a bottle of mineral water. And on the eighth take, at four in the morning, she sang the lyric straight through to perfection.

From producer Ken Caillat’s book, Making Rumours, Stevie Nicks said:

I wrote ‘Gold Dust Woman’ before we started Rumours, and there weren’t that many drugs around back then. It’s about groupie-type women who would stand around and give Christine and me dirty looks. But as soon as one of the guys came in the room, they were overcome with smiles. We recorded seven takes of that song and kept take 4 as the master.
