モノクロのMVってのが、きっと過去の自分を回想してるDaveの心情を強めたいのかな?と思った。

ビデオ内の意味深なスーツ男達は、『Momo』でいうところの灰色の男達みたい、、、これはアメリカの政治を動かしている上層部の人間たちなのだが、、、

「いつ戦争が起きるんだろう？」と不安な幼少期を送っていたDaveの考える、戦争を決定する権限を持つ人間たちのイメージなのだろう。

「戦争待ち」を繰り返している歌詞だが、実際のDave 自身は戦争がおきてしまうのではないか？と恐怖心で一杯だったと言う。

その思いを表現したのが、この【Waiting  On A War】なのだ。

1.アルバムイメージ

Dave Grohlは、このアルバムのサウンドをDavid Bowie デヴィッド・ボウイの『Let’s Dance』に例えて、

「EDM、ディスコ、[または]モダンダンスのレコードのようなものではない。この本当にアッパーで楽しいレコードだよ。これらの明るくてアップテンポの踊れるレコードを作るロックバンドへの自分達への愛情に触発された」とも語っている。

「アンセミックで巨大なものでいっぱいだ。」と強調している。

DrumのTaylor Hawkins は、「以前のアルバムよりも「ポップ志向」であり、通常のポストグランジサウンドとは違うんだ。アルバムでドラムループを使用しているしね」と新たなギミックも話している。

これはバンドのもう1つの面が見れるアルバムなのだ。

非典型的な特徴があると言うのは、とても面白いと思うし、Foo Fightersの新しい進化を見れるチャンスなのだ。

アルバムの1曲には、Daveが25年前にシアトルで書いたギターのリフが含まれている。

2.製作

 

このアルバムは、ロサンゼルスのエンシノにある1940年代の大きな古い家で録音され、レコーディングセッションは迅速に進行して行った。

Daveは、素材が急速に進行していることと、奇妙なことが起こり続ける環境でレコーディングしていることの2つを特徴として挙げている。

「俺は、雰囲気が間違いなくオフ仕様だって分かっていたよ。でも音はクソだったんだ。翌日スタジオに戻り、すべてのギターをチューンし直し。[ミキシング]ボードに設定した設定では、ダメだからすべてゼロに戻した。Pro Toolsセッションを開くと、トラックが欠落してるしね。 そこに貼られていなかった曲がいくつかあったんだけど、 奇妙なオープンマイクのノイズみたいだった。 楽器を演奏する人など、誰もいないんだ。部屋を録音するオープンマイクだけだなんてね」とスタジオの条件が芳しくなかった事を明かしている。

彼は、説明のつかない映像をビデオでキャプチャしたが、物件を売却しようとした家の所有者との秘密保持契約のため、映像を見せられないと、言う。

大規模な料理、飲酒、パーティーの夜に頻繁に終了したコンクリートとゴールドのセッションとは対照的に、セッションは可能な限り迅速に終了。

2020年2月、アルバムが完成したのだ。

3.『Medicine At Midnight』

Daveは、新作について

「10作目にして25周年だったから、数年前からフレッシュなことをやりたいと決めていた。色々なタイプのアルバムを作ってきたけど、アコースティックもやったし、パンク・ロックなものもやったし、ミドルテンポのアメリカーナもやった来たから、直感的にメロウな大人のアルバムを作るより、『くだらねえ。パーティー・アルバムを作ろう』と思ったんだ」

約3年半ぶりとなる通算10枚目となる本作『Medicine At Midnight』。

前作と同様プロデューサーは、グレッグ・カースティン。

2021年1月14日に、10枚目のスタジオアルバム「Medicineat Midnight」からの先行リリースとして【ShameShame】と【NoSonofMine】に続く3枚目のシングルとして最初にリリースされたのが、この曲になる。

日付は、フロントマンのDaveの52歳の誕生日を祝うために選ばれた。

バンドはジミーキンメルライブでライブデビュー。

現地時間11/7に人気番組「サタデー・ナイト・ライヴ」にも出演。同曲を世界初パフォーマンス。

4.【Waiting On A War】

アルバムからの第三弾のシングルで最新シングルになる。

音楽的に【Waiting on a War】はDave のトレードマークの声とアコースティックギターのデュエットで始まる。

だが、曲が後半に移行するにつれて、多くの楽器（弦、ベース、ドラムを含む）がミックスされていく。

徐々にペースを変え、エネルギッシュで激しいフィナーレにつながると言うドラマティックな曲になっているのが特徴だ。

後半に強度が増し、最後の1分間はエレキギターでエネルギッシュなフルバンドのロックサウンドに移行する。

そして作詞に関しては、リーダーであるDave の非常に個人的な意味を持つ多面的な曲である。

5.歌詞について

1980年代の米国とソビエト連邦の間の恐ろしい政治的緊張のために「(幼少期を) 絶望的な未来の暗い雲の下で過ごした」と言うDave。

「ワシントンDCの郊外で育った子供の頃、俺はいつも戦争を恐れてた。 空にミサイルの悪夢を、裏庭でおもちゃの兵士を抱えて見ていたんだ。これはおそらく、1980年代初頭の政治的緊張と俺ん家が国会議事堂からの近くにあったこともあり、引き起こされたものだろう。 俺の青春は、絶望的な未来の暗い雲の下で過ごしたんだよ。そして、去年の秋、俺は11歳の娘を学校に連れて行っていた時に、彼女は俺に向かって、「パパ、戦争はあるの？」と尋ねて来たんだよ。 彼女の無邪気な目を見ると、40年前に俺が感じた絶望的な未来の同じ暗い雲の下に彼女が住んでいることに気づいたのさ。俺の胸は沈んでしまったよ。そうして、その日に【Waiting On A War】を書いた。

つまりこの曲は、彼自身の若さを思い出したこと、娘のHarperとの会話から決定的なインスピレーションを得たことにより、世界最大の問題が、若々しくも無実な若者達から大切なものを奪ってしまう、と言うことを表現した歌詞になったのだとおもう。

この歌詞を聴いてLyraは、最も多くを失う若い世代へのストレートな心からの献身さを一曲に詰め込んだ曲だと言いたい。

叙情的に、この曲は「平和を我等に」タイプの曲に対するフー・ファイターズの現代的なアプローチだ。

Daveは暗い未来の可能性について考えている。今も昔も。

叙情的な内容は、自分の娘ハーパーグロールとの2019年のある日の暗い会話に触発され、世界についての彼自身の心配が甦ったのだ。

ワシントンDCで育った彼自身が冷戦の影響を恐れていたのが、そのまま歌詞に表れている。

この曲が完成すると、Daveは、バンドがこれまでに書いた中で最高の曲の1つであると感じたと言う。

Daveによると、この曲は「アコースティック主導の曲」と「ホームストレッチで岩の怒りで爆発する」「バラードを鳴らす」と表現されている。

ある意味、伝統的なと言うべきか？

王道フーファイと言うべき、Foo Fightersらしい力強いサウンドを持っていることが、より辛辣な歌詞をドラマティックにしているのだ。

バンド名が、第二次世界大戦戦中における未確認飛行物体を指すスラング用語「フー・ファイター」から来てるって言うのも、全て繋がってるような気がしてくるのはLyraだけか？

いつものLyraの癖である深読みだが、このバンド名をつけたのも、DCで育った彼の恐怖に打ち勝つ為の手段だったのかな?って思ってしまう。

歌詞も分かりやすくて、聴いていると当時の小さいDave少年が映像として見えるようだ。そして過去を思い出しているDave自身が、未来を案じ、自分の娘達の世代を心配している途方に暮れている姿すら見えるようだ。

歌詞の中で気になったのはSkyfall。

ただ単にそのままの意味で和訳しても良いが、Lyraは、“If the sky fall, we shall catch larks.”と言う格言を思い出し、それがピッタリくる気がして和訳しました。日本語だと「百年河清を待つ 」。

意味は、黄河の水が澄むのを長いこと待っていることから、まったく当てにならないことをいつまで待つことだ。

世の中、腐った世界に嫌気がさして、戦争を待ってしまうって人もいるかもしれない。

腐った世界に嫌気がさしてこんな世界なんか、終わっちまえ、って頭によぎった事がある人はいるかも。

でも実際にその場になれば、生死の恐怖に苛まれるに違いない。

この反戦へのストレートなDaveの思いが、広く伝わると良い。

特に今のアメリカは、規模の大小の違いはあれど、BBのような暴力を掲げた集団が沢山あり、無法地帯化して来ている。中国との緊張もあり、世界大戦も懸念されるが、自国内の国民VS国民の分断の方が恐ろしく、今現在のアメリカで、現実的に事件が多発しているのだ。

おかしな方向に向かいがちな世界を、アメリカで知名度と人気がNo.1と言っても良い力を持つ Foo Fightersのメッセージが広く伝わって欲しい。

思いやりとボランティア精神に溢れる陽気なアメリカ人に皆の気持ちを戻せたら、と願うばかりだ。

Daveの声は力強い。

骨が折れようが、大切な人を失い絶望の淵に陥っても立ち上がり、ステージで歌い続けて来た人だ。

皆が彼の声に、耳を傾けるに違いない。

絶対に。

The song was first released on January 14, 2021, as the third single from their tenth studio album, Medicine at Midnight, after “Shame Shame” and “No Son of Mine”. The date was chosen to celebrate frontman Dave Grohl’s 52nd birthday. The band debuted the song live on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on the same date.

Lyrically, the song was described as the Foo Fighters’ modern approach to a “Give Peace a Chance” type song. with Grohl pondering the possibility of a dark future. The lyrical content was inspired by bleak conversation Grohl had had with his own daughter Harper Grohl, in 2019, which reminded him of his own worries about the world:

Last fall, as I was driving my daughter to school, she turned to me and asked ‘Daddy, is there going to be a war?’. My heart sank as I realized that she was now living under the same dark cloud that I had felt 40 years ago. I wrote “Waiting on a War” that day. Everyday waiting for the sky to fall. Grohl later explained that he himself had feared the effect of the Cold War while growing up in Washington DC. Upon the completion of the song, Grohl felt it was one of the best songs the band had ever written.The song was described as an “acoustic-driven tune” and “aching ballad,“that “explodes with rock fury in the home stretch”.  Most of the song is composed primarily of Grohl singing over an acoustic guitar, bass, and drums, and strings, before building in intensity in its second half, and moving into an energetic, full-band rock sound with electric guitars for the last minute. The song was noted to have a more traditional Foo Fighters sound than prior singles from the album.

The third and final preview from Medicine At Midnight, “Waiting on a War” is a multi-faceted song that has a deeply personal meaning for Foo Fighters’ leader Dave Grohl. Remembering his own youth, which he “spent under the dark cloud of a hopeless future” due the frightening political tension between the United States and the Soviet Union during the 1980s, and taking the decisive inspiration from a conversation with his daughter Harper, Grohl has crafted a simple, but heartfelt dedication to the youngest generations, who often lose out on the most when the world’s greatest problems steal their youthful innocence.

Musically, “Waiting on a War” starts as a duet between Grohl’s trademark voice and the acoustic guitar, but more and more instruments (including strings, bass and drums) are added to the mix as the song transitions into its second half, where the gradual change of pace leads to an energetic and intense finale.

As a child growing up in the suburbs of Washington DC, I was always afraid of war. I had nightmares of missiles in the sky and soldiers in my backyard, most likely brought upon by the political tension of the early 1980’s and my proximity to the Nation’s Capitol. My youth was spent under the dark cloud of a hopeless future.

Last fall, as I was driving my 11 year old daughter to school, she turned to me and asked, “Daddy, is there going to be a war?” My heart sank in my chest as I looked into her innocent eyes, because I realized that she was now living under that same dark cloud of a hopeless future that I had felt 40 years ago.

I wrote “Waiting on a War” that day.

This song was written for my daughter, Harper, who deserves a future, just as every child does.

The album was recorded in a large, old house from the 1940s in Encino, Los Angeles. Recording sessions proceeded quickly, something Grohl attributed two things – that the material was progressing quickly and that they were recording in an environment where strange things kept happening. Grohl recalled:

I knew the vibes were definitely off, but the sound was fucking on. We would come back to the studio the next day and all of the guitars would be detuned. Or the setting we’d put on the [mixing] board, all of them had gone back to zero. We would open up a Pro Tools session and tracks would be missing. There were some tracks that were put on there that we didn’t put on there. But just like weird open mic noises. Nobody playing an instrument or anything like that, just an open mic recording a room.”

Grohl noted that they captured unexplainable footage on video, but due to a non-disclosure agreement with the house’s owner, who was attempting to sell the property, the footage cannot be shown. Contrary to the Concrete and Gold sessions, which frequently ended in nights of large cookouts, drinking, and parties, the sessions were wrapped up as quickly as possible. In February 2020, Grohl confirmed that the album was finished.

Grohl likened the album’s sound to David Bowie’s Let’s Dance album, with him explaining that it’s “not like a EDM, disco, [or] modern dance record” but rather “this really up, fun record” that is “filled with anthemic, huge, sing-along rock songs.” Hawkins described the album as being more “pop-oriented” than prior releases, different from their usual post-grunge sound. He also noted the use of a drum loop on the album, another atypical trait for the band. One song on the album contains a guitar riff that Grohl wrote 25 years ago in Seattle, but was never able to find a song to use it in until now. Grohl stated:

Some of those songs, the best ones happen in 45 minutes. Then there’s other songs — there’s a riff on the new record I’ve been working on for 25 years. The first time I demoed it was in my basement in Seattle.”

Grohl states the album was inspired by “Our love of rock bands that make these upbeat, up-tempo, almost danceable records.
