Kurtだけではない、U2やBob Dylanなど、有名アーティスト達が憧れの人として必ずあげるのが、彼なのだ。

“I Walk the Line” is a song written and recorded in 1956 by Johnny Cash. After three attempts with moderate chart ratings, it became Cash’s first number one hit on the Billboard charts. It reached number 17 on the US pop charts. It remained on the record charts for over 43 weeks, and sold over 2 million copies. It has also been used on many LP’s released from Sun Records, such as With His Hot and Blue Guitar, Sings the Songs That Made Him Famous, and Sings Hank Williams. It was the title song for a 1970 film starring Gregory Peck and a 2005 biopic of Cash starring Joaquin Phoenix.

「女の子達のキャーキャー声って昔からすごいパワーなんだなあ」と改めて感じたわ。
Lyraが知ってるJohnny Cashは、Man In Blackと言われた彼らしい、全身ブラックの出で立ちだ。
ブラックジーンズに、ブラックシャツに、ウェスタンブーツ。
でもこのJohnnyはカラフルな感じ(モノクロでも分かる)。
初期は、Elvis Presley とはレーベルメイトで、サン・レコードに所属し、ロカビリーのレコードを沢山リリースした。
この1956年はその頃。
ウィンクするJohnnyのサービス精神にもビックリ。
きっとこの低い男らしい声で女の子達を悩殺したんだろう。
大好きな女性に捧げた歌で。

1932年アーカンソー州キングスランドにRay Cash (1897年5月13日 – 1985年12月23日)と、キャリー・クロヴリー(旧姓リヴァーズ、1904年3月13日 – 1991年3月11日)のもとに7人兄弟の4番目として生まれたJoh R. は、空軍に入隊する際、イニシャルの使用ができなかったため法的にJohn・R・Cashと名付けたそうだ。
そして1955年サン・レコードと契約した時に、Johnny Cashと名付けたのが始まり。
因みに兄弟のロイ、マーガレット・ルイーズ、ジャック、J・R、リーバ、ジョアンヌ、トミーの中で、末の弟のTommy Cashもカントリー・アーティストとして成功をおさめた。
1935年3月、3歳の時、アーカンソー州ダイエスに住んでいて、失業救済局作業場で綿花を育て生計を立てていたが、とても貧しい生活を送っていた。
Johnnyも5歳から兄Jack ともに農業の手伝いをし、働きながら家族で歌っていた。
この時期に、2回洪水被害に遭っており、この経験を基に【Five Feet High and Rising 】を作曲。
世界恐慌のあおりを受けて家計は逼迫したが、この経験を基に多くの曲を作曲したと言う逞しさがJohnnyの魅力なのだ。
兄のJackとは、とても仲が良かったと言う。1944年5月、農場の機械に2人とも巻き込まれてしまう。
Johnnyは奇跡的に助かったが、1週間の重体の後1944年5月20日Jackが15歳で亡くなる。
この出来事は、一生Johnnyに影を落としていて、罪悪感を良く口にしていた。(自伝『Cash: The Autobiography 』)。
死の淵でJack は「天国と天使が見える」と語ったという。
数十年後、キャッシュは「天国で兄と会えることが楽しみだ」と語っている。
Johnnyは、ゴスペルの影響が強く、ラジオのJack Bennyの番組から流れるアイルランド音楽がらも大きな影響を受けたと言う。
母や幼馴染からギターを習い、12歳で演奏と作曲を始め、高校生時には、地元のラジオ局で歌い、数十年後、伝統的なゴスペル曲を集めたアルバム『My Mother’s Hymn Book 』をリリース。長年の夢が叶った瞬間だろう。
1950年7月7日、アメリカ空軍に入隊。ドイツのランヅバーグの合衆国空軍通信保安部の第12通信隊にソビエト軍のモールス信号傍受オペレーターとして配属。ここで「ザ・ランヅバーグ・バーバリアンズ」というバンド結成。1954年7月3日、三等軍曹となり、テキサス州に戻る。

特徴のある深いバス=バリトンの声バックバンドのザ・テネシー・スリーの独特のサウンド、憂鬱と謙虚な振る舞いを併せ持つ反逆のイメージ、刑務所の無料コンサート、ニックネーム「メン・イン・ブラック」の元となったトレードマークの黒服の着用で知られている。
コンサートでは常にシンプルに「Hello, I’m Johnny Cash. 」で始まり続いて名曲『Folsom Prison Blues 』を演奏していた。
キャッシュの音楽は、特に後年の作品は悲哀、道徳的試練、贖罪をテーマにしている。『I Walk the Line 』、『Folsom Prison Blues 』、『Ring of Fire』、『Ghost Riders in the Sky』、『Guess Things Happen That Way 』、『Man in Black 』などの曲で知られている。
One Piece at a Time 』、『A Boy Named Sue 』、後に妻となるJune Carter Cash）とのデュエット『Jackson 』、鉄道をテーマにした『Hey, Porter』、『Rock Island Line 』などユーモラスな曲もある。
2003年に死去するまでに放ったヒット曲数は140曲以上で、そのヒット曲最多売上曲数は世界記録保持者エルヴィス・プレスリーの151曲に迫る数字である。年間４枚以上アルバムを発売した年も多い。レコードとCDの累計売上がこれまでに5,000万枚を記録しており、グラミー賞も11回受賞し、ほかにも数々の受賞。
多くのアーティスト、Kris Kistofferson, プロデューサーRick Rubin,
Willy Nelson ,Waylon Jennings ,政治家 Al Gore らからも共感や尊敬を得ている。

Johnny Cashと言えば、「ロックの反逆性と、カントリーの哀愁、フォークの語り口」といわれる独自の世界観を持つ楽曲が特徴である。
そしてその個性でJohnnyが作ったのはラブソングだ。
この【I Walk The Line】は、一途に好きな女性を愛し、「これからも愛していくよ」と忠誠にも近いメッセージを送る歌だ。
だから、そのイメージから死ぬまで仲良く添い遂げた妻であり、彼女が死ぬまで2人で歌いツアーに出ていた音楽パートナーでもあったJune Carter Cashのことをモデルにした歌だと思いたくなるが、実際は、違った。
1951年7月18日空軍訓練中、Johnnyがサンアントニオのローラースケート場で出会い結婚したヴィヴィアン・リベルトのことを歌ったものだ。
交際3週間後ドイツに3年間赴任することになったJohnny。この間2人は何百ページにもおよぶラブレターを交換したと言う。
この時の2人の愛を誓ったのが、この【I Walk The Line】なのだ。
その後、Johnnyの退役から1ヶ月後の1954年8月7日、2人はサンアントニオにあるセント・アン・カトリック教会で結婚式を挙げ、ロザンヌ・キャッシュ、キャシー、シンディ、タラの4人姉妹をもうけた。
が、Johnnyの薬物とアルコール依存症、コンサート・ツアーによるすれ違い、浮気などに悩まされて、結局、June Curterとの関係が引き金となり1966年に離婚した。
最後の妻になるJune Curter Cush(1929年6月23日-2003年5月15日)は、姉さん女房。
『Grand Ole Opry グランド・オール・オープリー』の舞台裏で初めて出会ってから13年後の1968年、カナダのオンタリオ州ロンドンでのライヴ演奏中、Johnnyがプロポーズし、1968年3月1日、ケンタッキー州フランクリンで結婚した。
1970年3月3日、1人息子John Carter Cush ジョン・カーター・キャッシュをもうけた。

二人は仲が良く何処にいくのも一緒。
2003年にJuneが亡くなるまで、35年間2人はコンサート・ツアーを含む音楽活動を一緒に行った。
そして、Johnnyは、Juneが亡くなった４ヶ月後に後を追うように亡くなった。

Johnnyが愛されるのは、ジャンルを飛び越えた自由な所もあると思う。
53歳の時には、カントリーぎらいで有名なFrank Zappaと出会い、互いに民主党支持だったため気があったようで、ZappaがコンサートでJohnnyの【Ring Of Fire】を歌った。
それに、JohnnyもNine Inch Nailsの『Hurt 』など、20世紀のロックをいくつかカヴァーしたり、凄くオープンな所がJohnnyの魅力なのだ。
新妻を家に置いたまま、仕事で離れていた時に、愛に正直に生きていこうと言う気持ちを書いたのだと言う。思いついたら20分で書き上げてしまった曲とは、思えない完成度。
I walk the line
「君のために正しい行いをするよ」と言う、愛する人への誓いの言葉だ。
映画の邦題「君につづく道」はそのまんま、道っぽくて実は違う。
一途に愛する君への真っ直ぐな思い、と言うこと。(まあ、それを喩えて道にしたのでしょう、個人的にはウーンですが。)
真っ直ぐなJohnnyらしい愛し方。
それは、名曲に生き続ける。
これからも多くのアーティスト達にリスペクトされ、歌い継がれるだろう。

The song is very simple and like most Cash songs, the lyrics tell more of a story than the music conveys. (You’ve got a way to keep me on your side/You give me cause for love that I can’t hide/For you I know I’d even try to turn the tide).
It is based upon the “boom-chicka-boom” or “freight train” rhythm common in many of Cash’s songs. In the original recording of the song, there is a key change between each of the five verses, and Cash hums the new root note before singing each verse.
When performing this song in recording, and in later live and television appearances, Cash would place a piece of paper under the strings of his guitar towards the tuning end. As he explained during a 1990s appearance on The Nashville Network, he did this in order to simulate the sound of a snare drum, an instrument to which he did not have access during the original Sun session.
Johnny, with the Temptations outside his door and a new wife at home, wanted the lyrics to say, “I’m going to be true to those who believe in me and depend on me to myself and God. Something like I’m still being true, or I’m ‘Walking The Line.’ The lyrics came as fast as I could write,” says Johnny. “In 20 minutes, I had it finished.”

The unique chord progression for the song was inspired by backwards playback of guitar runs on Cash’s tape recorder while he was in the Air Force stationed in Germany. Later in a telephone interview, Cash stated, “I wrote the song backstage one night in 1956 in Gladewater, Texas. I was newly married at the time, and I suppose I was laying out my pledge of devotion.” After the writing of the song Cash had a discussion with fellow performer Carl Perkins who encouraged him to adopt “I Walk the Line” as the song title. Cash originally intended the song as a slow ballad, but producer Sam Phillips preferred a faster arrangement, which Cash grew to like as the uptempo recording met with success.
Once while performing the song on his TV show, Cash told the audience, with a smile, “People ask me why I always hum whenever I sing this song. It’s to get my pitch.” The humming was necessary since the song required Cash to change keys several times while singing it.
The song’s lyrics refer to marital fidelity, personal responsibility, and avoiding temptation and criminal behavior.
One of his most famous songs, “I Walk the Line” is Johnny Cash’s promise to remain faithful to his first wife, Vivian, while he is on the road. It seems a certain ring of fire interfered with this pledge.
The song became Cash’s first #1 Billboard hit. The single remained on the record charts for over 43 weeks, and sold over 2 million copies.
This song’s influence on the music world is palpable. In his autobiography, Bob Dylan makes strong mention of its effect on him:
“I Walk the Line” [is] a song I’d always considered to be up there at the top, one of the most mysterious and revolutionary of all time, a song that makes an attack on your most vulnerable spots, sharp words from a master.
“I keep a close watch on this heart of mine.” Indeed. I must have recited those lines to myself a million times… When I first heard “I Walk the Line” so many years earlier, it sounded like a voice calling out, “What are you doing there, boy?” I was trying to keep my eyes wide opened, too.
