特にChris Cornell関連は、自分の魂と呼応するバンドが多く、このPearl Jamもそのお気に入りバンドの一つだ。バンドのメンバー一人一人を見るだけで胸が熱くなる。

Pearl Jamはアメリカ１、２位を争う人気のバンドだと思う。Grunge創世記に生まれ、黄金時代から、未だにメンバー全員揃っていて元気で、それもメインストリームで未だに大活躍して存続しているバンドとしては、唯一かもしれない。

ああLyraの大好きなChrisもLayneも、もうこの世には居ない。彼らは、このPearl Jamのメンバーとリアル友達であった。だから…何とも言えない刹那さで、胸がキューッと締め付けられてしまう。何故なら、彼らのサウンドに姿に、今は亡き愛するアーティスト達の姿が重なってしまうからだ。

せめてもの救いは、Pearl Jamのメンバー全員の笑顔が本当に素敵で、人生を楽しんでいるように見えることだろう。

勿論、彼らだって家族や仕事関連の悩みだってあるし、健康面だってアレコレあるのは知っている、、、ただ生きていてくれるのが嬉しいのだ。

“Even Flow” is a song by the American rock band Pearl Jam. Featuring lyrics written by vocalist Eddie Vedder and music written by guitarist Stone Gossard, “Even Flow” was released in 1992 as the second single from the band’s debut album, Ten(1991). The song peaked at number three on the  Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The song was included in Pearl Jam’s 2004 greatest hits album, rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991-2003) , (A remixed version of the song was included on the 2009 Ten reissue.

Eddie Vedderについては、このブログでずっと書いて来たので、詳しいことは過去記事を参照して頂けると幸いです。

このビデオも何万回も見て来たが、ダイブを知ったのもPearl Jam のあの曲だったなあーとか、大好きな映画にも出ていたり、このファッションも懐かしくてジワる。改めて見て新鮮だし、この魅力は色褪せない永遠性がある。ずっとGrunge 好きのハートに居続けるだろう作品なのだ。

【Even Flow】について

【Even Flow】は、ヴォーカリストのEddie Vedder が書いた歌詞とギタリストのStone Gossard が書いた音楽が特徴。ビルボードメインストリームロックトラックチャートの3位。また、2004年のグレイテストヒッツアルバム『Reaview Mirror （Greatest Hits1991–2003）にも収録されている。この曲のリミックスバージョンは、2009年の10回目の再発行にも収録されている人気曲なのだ。

作曲について

ニ長調で書かれ Stone Gossard はオープンDチューニングでプレイしている。　Mike McCready は、標準チューニングで同様のリズムパターンで合わせて行く。レコーディングされたバージョンの曲は実際には少しシャープに聞こえる。　二長調より、すべてが調整されており、約4分の1のステップで行く。Stoneのギターの特徴は、ファンクギターのリフだ。

Mike McCreadyは、ギターについてこう語っていた「それは俺が Steve Ray Bone のふりをしていて、それに対する微妙な試みだ。Stoneが、リフと曲を書いたんだ。Dチューニングだと思う。俺は、ちょうど規則的なパターンで彼を追いかけて行った。Stevie Ray Bone から知っていることをすべて盗んで、その曲に入れようとしたんだ。露骨なぼったくり。君がそうするなら、賛辞のはぎ取りだ！」

歌詞について

メインの詩でのヴォーカルラインは、力強く目立つ三全音の音程で始まる。Eddie の歌詞は、ホームレスの男性の体験を書いているのがわかるだろう。この男性は「コンクリート製の枕の上で」眠り、通行人に物乞いをしているのだ。　読み書きができないことに加えて、彼は微笑んで首尾一貫した思考を維持するのに苦労している時にさえ、「狂気に見える」ため、精神的に病気である可能性がある。それはサビの部分の歌詞に繋がると思う… 「まだ漂ってるぜ/ 思考は蝶のように/ 生きているんだぜ/ ああ 奴はわからないんだよ/ だから奴は追いかけるのさ」と悲しく歌詞が彼の狂ってしまった人格を表現している。

1994年3月28日マイアミのベイフロントアンフィシアターでのコンサートで、Eddieは、「君がまだ心を開いている間に、俺は少しストリート教育を投入すると思った。通りには、橋の下に住む小さなホームレスのコミュニティがある。それらの人々がすべて狂っているわけではなく、時にはそれが彼らのせいではないことを知っておく必要がある。この曲【EvenFlow】と呼ばれてる曲だ」と話していた。LyraにはEddieのこの説明には意図があったと感じた。これは、蔑むとが、バカにすると言う意味ではなく、ただEddieは、狂ったホームレスがいるけれど、そうではないホームレスもいると説明して世間の偏見を助長しないように配慮したのかな？と思った。世の中には人を陥れるのが好きな悪人もいるからだ。

2008年5月12日トロントでのショーでは、Eddieは、この曲がシアトルのスペースニードルの下で書かれたと言っている。2018年8月8日シアトルで開催されたショーで、Eddieは、この曲がバンドのファーストアルバムの制作中に友人となったホームレスのベトナム戦争のベテラン（Eddie とも呼ばれる）に触発されたことを明らかにした。つまりモデルになる男性がいたと言うことだ。そして、バンドのツアー中にこの男が亡くなったことを知り、その後曲を書いた事も言っていた。

ホームレスの男性の生活のナレーションの歌詞とは、何ともキツイ内容だ。

SoundgardenのドラマーでもあったMatt Camelonは、

「 【Evenflow】のコーラスを聞いて、これは化ける(曲)だぞ、と思ったのをはっきりと覚えているよ。とてもフッキーで、それは本当にヤンチャなZeppelin の巨大なロックの感触を持っている。俺がグループに入ってから数千回演奏したけど、それは典型的なPearl Jam の曲だと思いますね。これが演奏されたら曲の要点はただもう素晴らしいと言うことだけだよ」と大絶賛している。

彼らのこの1st アルバムは、スタジオで非常に効率的に作られ、ほとんどの曲をほんの数回のテイクで完成させていた。ただし、この【Even Flow】は例外。50〜100テイクが必要だったらしい。Pearl Jamの臨時のドラマーで、当時彼らのスティックマンだったデイヴ・クルーセンはこのトラックで苦労したらしい。Dave は次のように述べている。「俺がラストでスピードを上げていたので、彼らは真ん中を編集しなければならなかった。それはただの悪夢だったよ。」

この曲はホームレスの男性の視点から書かれている。彼は冷たいコンクリートの上に横たわっているが、自分の運がすぐに変わることを望んでいるのだ。

彼は、手を差し伸べて変化を懇願しているの。気まぐれであるということは、しばしば移動していることを意味し、眠って生きるため、或いは変化を懇願するため、より良い場所を探している願いなのだろう。

彼はこの通りでたくさんの人に会っている。だが、落ち着いて他の人と知り合うことは決してない。シャワーを浴びたり歯を磨いたりする方法が、彼にはない。たとえ彼が「幸せ」であったとしても、その様子は、普通の人から見たらかなり乱れ、狂ったように見えるだろう。

文化的受容バブルの箇所は「異なる」という根底にある感覚に対処しなければならないこのホームレスの人の経験に根強い要因を考慮して、この歌詞は、1つの取引の潜在意識の中で表現された一貫性のないイメージを説明している。

ホームレスの男性を詳しく描いている為、この曲は、ホームレスの人間の歌だが、これは彼がホームレスであること、彼の出現や行動を拒絶をする「世間の歌」でもあるのだ。あえて当事者を描くことで、取り巻く人間たちや世界全体の不条理を描いているのだと思う。

 

kneelin’〜では、明らかに通りに住むすべての人が読み書きができないわけではない。だが彼は新聞で自分自身をカバーする。それは新聞が、毛布と傘の両方として機能するからだ。

冬と言う時期は、ホームレスの男性が、この時代が悪化するだろうと信じていることを示すために使用されている。彼はもはや将来に対して楽観的ではない。冬自体はホームレスの男性にとっては大変な時期だ。暖かい眠りの場所を見つけるなど彼には出来ないだろうし、冬はそれに伴うすべての苦労とともに実際にやってくるのだ。

この歌詞に出てくる天井は、家または避難所のことだ。「法的な恥の殿堂」は、ホームレスの避難所または同様の場所をさしている。この歌詞の主人公は、ホームレスが避難所ではない家を見つけるのがいかに難しいかについて話しているのだ。

曲のギターソロの後でほとんど聞こえないこの対話は、ホームレスの主人公によって話されていると見なして良いだろう。 対話のホームレスの男性の側だけが聞こえる、、、彼が誰かに予備の交換を求めていることは明らかであり、相手側は、拒否している。

この人が最初にホームレスの男性を拒絶した後、彼は彼らがお金を持っていることを知っているので、もう一度彼らに懇願する。その人は動揺せず、その後ホームレスの男性はあきらめて彼らに、元気に、と願っているセリフを言う。

世間では、ホームレスの人にお金を渡さない、あるいは通りを通り過ぎるときに彼らとのアイコンタクトを避けるのが一般的だ。

貧困は醜い現実であり、それに直面したとき、多くの人々は自分の現実と一致しない現実を受け入れたくないので、目をそらすことを選択するのだ。

自分がその立場にはなりたくないから、と言うのもあるだろう。或いは、ストリートには揉め事が付き物だから、巻き込まれたくないと言う保身もあるだろう。

それが悪いとは言えない、何故なら危害を加えていないだけマシと言う最悪な話があるから。事実ホームレスの人達が何もしてない場合でも暴力を振るったり、悪いことを知る人間達もいるのだから、それに比べたら無視する程度ならば、まだ良い方かもしれない。

ただEddieは、この人達を描くことで今のアメリカの現状を表したかったのではないかと感じる。何も知らないと言う人が意外にも多いからだ。つまり、何も知らない人達や、敢えて見ないように逃避している人間達に、今、現実にあることを見せて、人々に問題を問うと言うことをしたかったのではないか?と思う。

それを罰するわけでもなくただ人目に晒したかったのではないか？

余りにも耐え難い男の姿を、見て見ぬふりをする人々の目の前に置いたと言うことだ。

どう思う？アンタなら物乞いしてるこの人を見てむぬふりして、どう感じるんだ?と。

アンタなら、どう思う?

見ないとわからないことがこの世には沢山ある。

考えなければ浮かばない答えがこの世には、無限にあるように。

私達の世界をもう一度、見てみるのだ。

違う角度から。

違った立場から。

それはこの世界をより良くする最後の手段になるのかもしれない。

誰も救わない。

“Even Flow” is the second single from Pearl Jam’s inaugural album Ten. It is a narration of the life of a homeless person. It is a favorite for many, including Matt Cameron (who was Soundgarden’s drummer at the time).

“Even Flow” was written in the key of D major with Gossard performing his parts in open D tuning and McCready complementing it with a similar rhythm pattern in standard tuning. The recorded version of the song actually sounds slightly sharper than D major, with everything tuned up — accidentally or otherwise — around one quarter of a step. The song features a funk guitar riff by Gossard.

McCready on the song:

That’s me pretending to be Stevie Ray Vaughan, and a feeble attempt at that. Stone (Gossard, Pearl Jam guitarist) wrote the riff and song; I think it’s a D tuning. I just followed him in a regular pattern. I tried to steal everything I know from Stevie Ray Vaughan and put it into that song. A blatant rip-off. A tribute rip-off, if you will!

The vocal line that appears in the main verse begins with a very prominent tritone interval. The stark lyrics by Vedder for “Even Flow” describe the experience of being a homeless man. The subject sleeps “on a pillow made of concrete” and panhandles passersby for spare change. In addition to being illiterate, he may also be mentally ill, as he “looks insane” when he smiles and struggles to keep coherent thoughts (“Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies/Oh, he don’t know, so he chases them away”).

At Pearl Jam’s March 28, 1994, concert at the Bayfront Amphitheater in Miami, Vedder introduced the song by saying, “I thought I’d throw in a bit of street education while you still have an open mind….Right across the street there’s a little homeless community that lives under the bridge. You should just know that those people ain’t all crazy and sometimes it’s not their fault. This song is called ‘Even Flow’.”

At the May 12, 2008, show in Toronto, Vedder stated that the song was written under the Space Needle in Seattle. At a subsequent show in Seattle on August 8, 2018, Vedder revealed that the song was inspired by a homeless Vietnam War veteran (also named Eddie) whom he befriended while working on the band’s first album. Vedder wrote the song after learning that the man had died while the band was touring.

I distinctly remember hearing the chorus for “Evenflow” and thinking that’s HUGE. So hooky, it’s got a really rad Zeppelin huge rock feel to it. Although we’ve played it a couple of thousand times since I’ve been in the group I think that’s the quintessential Pearl Jam song. Even though it gets played out, the nuts and bolts of that song are just amazing.

 

Fun Fact: For their first album, Pearl Jam was very efficient in the studio, getting most songs done in just a few takes. However, “Even Flow” was an exception, requiring between 50 and 100 takes. Pearl Jam was a band with itinerant drummers, and Dave Krusen, who was their stickman at the time, had a hard time with this track. Said Krusen: “They had to edit the middle because I was speeding up at the end. It was just a nightmare.”

This song is written from the point of view of a homeless man. He’s laying on the cold concrete, but hoping his luck’ll change soon.

A man living on the streets, he has his hand out begging for change.

Being a vagabond means you are often on the move, looking for a better spot to sleep and live or to beg for change. Even though he sees a lot of people on his travels, he never gets to settle down and become more than acquainted with others.

With no ways to shower or brush his teeth, the bum tends to look quite disheveled and crazy to the normal person, even if he is “happy.”

Considering the factors persistent in this homeless person’s experiences with having to deal with the underlying sense of being ‘different’ from the cultural acceptance bubble, this line describes the inconsistent and (as suggested in the comments) incoherent images expressed within the subconscious of one dealing with homelessness, possibly due to the rejection of his appearance by society, as stated in the earlier lines of the song.

This may take on a bit of a brighter outlook in another light, as the act of chasing away the ‘butterflies’ could be a redirection of experiencing optimism in the face of difficulty, especially one such as having no permanent home.

Winters is used to show that the homeless man believes that times are just going to get worse. He is no longer optimistic for the future. Winter itself is a hard time for a homeless man however here it is being used to say that winter is actually coming along with all of the struggles that come with it such as finding a warm place to sleep.

 

ceiling In this case, a ceiling is a home or shelter. The “legal halls of shame” are homeless shelters or similar locations. The speaker is speaking of how difficult it is to find a home that is not a homeless shelter.

After his passing, he will be reborn, able to start with a clean slate.

This dialogue, which is barely audible after the song’s guitar solo, can be assumed to be spoken by the homeless protagonist of the song.

We only hear the homeless man’s side of the dialogue, but it is clear that he is asking someone for spare change and they are refusing. After this person initially rebuffs the homeless man, he begs them once again as he knows they have money. The person still does not budge, after which the homeless man gives up and wishes them well.

It is common for people to not give money to homeless people or even avoid eye contact with them when passing by them on the street. Poverty is an ugly reality and when confronted with it, many people choose to look away, not wanting to accept a reality that doesn’t align with their own.
