今日は、Syd Barrett のバースデイなので、毎年恒例の彼の曲を和訳して、Sydを偲びましょう。
今年もソロワークから選ぶつもりが、久しぶりにPink Floyd時代の方も良いかな?と思い、Syd 在籍時のPink Floydの曲を解説しますね。
ミステリアスで、知的な雰囲気のSydというのが良い感じのイメージ。Lyraには、ずっとそう…年取ってハゲになっても、狂ってしまっても、Sydは、Sydだと感じています。

“Astronomy Dominé” is a song by the English rock band Pink Floyd. The song, written and composed by the original vocalist/guitarist Syd Barrett, is the opening track on their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967). The lead vocal was sung by Barrett and the keyboard player Richard Wright. Its working title was “Astronomy Dominé (An Astral Chant)”. “Dominé” (the vocative of “Lord” in Latin) is a word frequently used in Gregorian chants.

2020年代の今、聴いても新鮮で革新的なサウンドだと思う。
歌詞は、Sydの好みが如実に分かる仕上がり。
SF小説やシェークスピアのワードが出てくるので、彼の好みが分かり易く、サウンドがそれを映画のように盛り上げているので個人的に大好きな曲だ。
【Astronomy Domine】について
【AstronomyDominé 】は、Pink Floydのオリジナルのボーカリスト/ギタリストだあったSyd Barrett が作曲した曲。
デビューアルバム1967年リリースの『The Piper At The Gate Of Daxn』 のオープニングトラックだ(邦題s 夜明けの口笛吹き）。
リードボーカルは Syd Barrett とキーボーディストのRichard Light が歌った。
その作業タイトルは「天文学ドミネ（アストラルシャント）」。「ドミネ」とは、「ラテン語で「主」であり、グレゴリアンの歌で頻繁に使用される単語である。

「ドミネ」（ラテン語で「主」の呼格）の曲は1:36で、彼らの曲「I Want It I Need It（Death Heated）」で使用されているDeathGripsのサンプルを聞くことができる。
因みに、直訳するとAstronomy Domineは、天文学の聖職者のことである。
ニコラス・シャフナーの1991年の著書「Saucerfulof Secrets：The Pink Floyd Odyssey」の第24章（「Us and Them」）で、ニック・メイスンは1987年に特定の曲がどのように正しく思えなかったかについて話している。
「僕は「天文学の支配」が大好きです。問題は、易経と星間説明に戻っているから。デイブが威厳のある中年になり、この情報を聴衆に叫ぶんだから、問題になると思いますよ。人生がどれほど大変で、どれほど落ち込んでいるかについて話すのは簡単だしね。」
Portaliaは、そのままだと単語の意味は特にない為、Portalianのことか、又は造語だと思われる。Portalianならば、イタリア語とポーランド語のこと、又は、イタリア人とポーランド人のことを意味する。
曲のイントロは、録音時に公共の関心を集めていたであろうNASAのミッションに似た、無線のような、ラジオトークとビープ音で構成されており、曲のスペースのような雰囲気を確立していて面白い。
この曲は、Pink Floydが先駆的なスペースロックに向けて取った最初のステップだと言える。
『夜明けの口笛吹き』の33 1/3コレクションで語られているように、このボーカルはPeter Jener によって作られた。当時の彼は、EDI のプロデューサーだった。

1行目の歌詞は、ある惑星または、月の「風景」を表している。文字通り「2番目のシーン」のことであり、これは、2番目のステージ。つまり地球ではない、移住の地などの2nd シーンを表しているのだ。
これは、私たちが完全に知られていると信じていた悲しみ（青）と、衝動と衝動を理解する新しい方法との間にある闘争を指している。
彼らの最初の力は、Syd Barrette が後の方で説明する！天体に起因すると考えられる。
天文学の支配は、私たち自身の行動などに影響を与える「天文学の領域」だ。 このフレーズが古代ギリシャ人の冥王ハーデスと私たちの内なる自己との間に適切なパラレリズムを提供することも注目に値する。

分かりにくいかもしれないが歌詞の”Oberon〜 “から始まる歌詞の部分は、すべて天王星の衛星のことだ。あと、これは、シェイクスピア劇の登場人物でもある。
（真夏の夜の夢の妖精の王と女王、オベロンとチタニア、テンペストのプロスペロの娘、ミランダ）など、キャラクターのことだ。
そして、タイタンは土星の最大の衛星のことを指す。
歌詞ないの分かりにくい箇所でもう一つ説明すると、Thomas Roscoe Rede Stebbingのこと。
トーマス・ステビング（Thomas Roscoe Rede Stebbing F.R.S., F.L.S.、1835年2月6日、- 1926年7月8日) は、イギリスの動物学者である。わざと歌詞では、ファミリーネームが先で、順番が逆にしてある。「ロスコー、そう トーマス・ステビング…」と言っているのは、リアルに名前を忘れて思い出したようにも聞こえる。Sydがリアルを求めて、わざとそうしたのだろう。
歌詞に出てくる名前で、ラスト近くでいきなりダン・デアが出てくる。これは、イラストレーターのフランク・ハンプソンによって作成された、英国のサイエンスフィクションのコミックヒーローの事である。
この曲では、宇宙、惑星、月をこのコミックから明確に参照している為、宇宙人の話のようでもあり、短い歌詞なのに、細かいディテールが漫画を見てるかのように知れて、この点もリアルに感じられるポイントの1つだと思う。
このように【Astronomy Dominé】は、Sydの頭の中を、分かりやすくよく表現している曲だと言える。
彼が好きだった小説や論文などから、彼が宇宙好きだったのが、漫画や当時のヒッピー文化からだったと感じた。
Lyra自身もSpacyなものもHippie カルチャーも大好きでハマっていた事がある為、この趣味が似てるところが、Sydをより身近に感じる理由だろう。
「好き」が沢山あると人生がより豊かに、楽しくなる。そして、人との繋がりも広がる。
Sydの晩年は辛かったようだが、それまでの人生では、同じように楽しく生きていた時期があり、宇宙やコミックスや論文に思い馳せていたのだから、身近に感じられて嬉しい。

This song was written and composed by Pink Floyd’s original vocalist/guitarist Syd Barrett. It is the first track on their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Its working title was “Astronomy Domine (An Astral Chant)”. “Domine” (the vocative of “Lord” in Latin) is a word frequently quoted in Gregorian chants.

In Chapter 24 (“Us and Them”) of Nicholas Schaffner’s 1991 book Saucerful of Secrets: The Pink Floyd Odyssey, Nick Mason talked about how certain songs didn’t feel right in 1987.
“I love ‘Astronomy Domine’. The trouble is, you’re right back into the I Ching and interstellar explanation. I think that’s something Dave would have some problem with as he reaches dignified middle age, shrieking out this information to the audience. It’s easier to talk about how hard life is and how depressed one gets.”
The intro to the song consists of muffled radio talk and beeps, akin to the NASA missions that would have been capturing the public interest at the time of recording, and thus establishing a space-like atmosphere for the song. It was the first step that Pink Floyd took towards pioneering space rock.
As told in the book The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, of the 33 1/3 colllection, this vocal was made by Peter Jenner. He was a producer at EMI.
This refers to a struggle that we have between the sadness (blue) that we believed to be fully known, and the new way of understanding impulse and drive; we attribute their initial force to the celestial bodies that Syd Barrett describes afterward.
The Astronomy Domine is the “Astronomic Realm” that still affects our own conduct and so forth.
It is also noteworthy that this phrase provides adequate paralellism between the Hades of the Ancient Greeks and our inner self. Therefore, the Infernus is inside human nature and the celestial heavens are just playing with its pendular movements.
Space is a common theme in psychedelic rock, usually hinting at alienation from the world or quite literally being higher than everyone else. This song, however, seems to make a different kind of metaphor for space travel. Yes, Barrett’s lyrics include Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune, but why mention Oberon, Miranda, Titania and Titan? Those are all lesser known moons, and they don’t fit in with any specific rhyme scheme. The reason they are included is an allusion to feeling god-like, and feeling powerful. The people who choose to speak out see something that everybody else doesn’t see, a revolution, a change.
Saturn (above) is the god of liberation and time. Neptune is the god of water and sea, but was also very important to the Equestrians, who began the transition into the Roman Empire. Finally, Jupiter, better known by his Greek name, Zeus, was the god of the sky and king of all gods. Oberon, Miranda, Titania and Titan are all characters from the plays of William Shakespeare, aligning the power of lasting literature with the power of Barrett’s music.
oberon… These are all moons of Uranus and are also characters in Shakespeare’s plays (Oberon and Titania, King and Queen of the Fairies in A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Miranda, daughter of Prospero in The Tempest). Titan is the largest moon of Saturn.
Dan Dare is a British science fiction comic hero created by illustrator Frank Hampson, and is referenced in this song with obvious references to Space, planets, and their moons.
