歌詞について

1993年にリリースされたアルバム『Songs of Faith and Devotion』に収録されているこの曲を初めて聴いた時からその意味を理解して来て意味の重大さに心が乱される。

この歌を理解するには、90 年代初頭の社会的現実を理解する必要があるだろう。

この歌は完全に宗教的な比喩に包まれている。だが、多くの人が考えるように、この歌は宗教やキリスト教とはさほど関係ないのだ。

意味を理解するには、歌の中で誰が話しているのか、誰に宛てた言葉なのかを理解する必要があるだろう(当たり前の話だが)。

この【Jude】は、残酷な曲だ。それも純粋な愛の残酷な証拠を求めている。

この歌詞は、末期の伝染病患者 (HIV) の謙虚な告白である。それが曲全体を覆っている為、非常にヘヴィーな歌詞だと言える。

この歌詞の主人公は、肉体的に美しく、見た目も良いという祝福を与えられている。だがそれは、外は真っ赤でも、中身は腐ったリンゴのようなのなのかもしれない。

誰かが野心的に彼に興味を持ってアプローチしている。だから、主人公は病気の告白をしその際に、「俺の愛が欲しいなら」その人がどこまで行くかを調べようとしているのが、この歌詞のメインの世界なのだ。

その人は、自分の人生がどれほど惨めでつらいものになったか、或いは相手の人生もどれほど悲惨なものになるかを話している。そして告白し、それでも自分に興味があり、その背後に自分の健康を危険にさらしても構わないという真の愛があるなら、「君は俺の言葉を受け取るでしょう。」と愛を与えるとまで言っているのだ。これを言えるということは、主人公も満更ではない、相手を好きになれると言っているのだ。随分とはっきりしている主人公だと思う。

また、比喩的な歌のタイトル【Judas】がこれと何の関係があるのか​​疑問に思うひともいるだろう。

これは1990年代初頭まで、HIV /エイズで病気になった人は誰でも現実を語ることを避けていたことに関係しているだろう。この病気は、【Judas】ユダのキスのように広まっだが、主にベッドでの話だからセクシーで妖しい雰囲気もある歌詞なのだ。

個人的には歌詞にあるHoliest から、holiest of nightsが頭に浮かぶため、宗教的な意味はさほどなくても、神を意識してしまう。このHoliest of nightsは、キリスト教で、最も聖なる夜のこと言う。復活の徹夜祭やクリスマスイブを指すため、神聖な雰囲気を醸し出していると思う。

へヴィーな状況設定の歌詞でも全く下品にならないないのは、この神聖な雰囲気があるからだ。

そしてCheating Judases, doubting Thomasesの歌詞だが、これは、Martinが、恋人が約束を守らない嘘つきだと非難している感じを出している。

ユダとトマスは、イエス・キリストの十二使徒の二人であるのはご存知だろう。　Judas = ユダは、金銭の保証を得るためにイエスをだました人物だ。

彼の裏切りは、彼がキリストに与えた罪悪感に満ちたキスとそれに続く彼の逮捕によって体現されている。彼がまだ話している間に、12人の一人であるJudas ユダと呼ばれる男に率いられた群衆が到着した。彼はイエスに接吻しようと近づいた。

しかしイエスは、「ユダよ、人の子を口づけで裏切るのですか」と尋ねた。 (ルカ 22:48) トーマスは、イエスが生き返って彼らを訪ねたと彼らが彼に言った後、彼の友人を疑った。

「彼の手の釘の跡を見て、釘があった場所に指を置き、手を彼のわき腹に入れなければ、私は信じられません。」 (ヨハネ 20:24-29)

この歌詞はこのエピソードに準えているのだろう。

Alan Wilder は、Keyboard マガジンの 1993 年 5 月号で次のように述べている。

「【”T” Judas】の冒頭には、逆方向のリバーブが混入された、ストレートに録音されたイリアン パイプがあります。」

そしてMartin Gore は、オーストラリアの新聞 In Press に次のように語っている。

「『Judas』は傲慢なラブソングです。安全でないセックスを容認しているわけではありません。誰かとの関係を 100% 望んでいるということです。究極の傲慢さです。」

Judas is from the Album “Songs of Faith and Devotion” released in 1993. Since first time heard the song, I understood the meaning and today still attached to my beliefs.
“Songs of Faith and Devotion is the eighth studio album by English electronic music band Depeche Mode. It was first released on 22 March 1993 in the United Kingdom by Mute Records and a day later in the United States by Sire Records and Reprise Records. The album incorporated a more aggressive, darker rock-oriented tone than its predecessor Violator (1990), largely influenced by the emerging alternative rock and grunge scenes in the United States.To understand this song you have to understand the social reality back in early 90’s.The song was totally wrapped with religious metaphors. This song has nothing to do with religion or Christianity as many people think. You have to understand inside the song who is talking and to whom the words are addressed.Judas is a humble confession of a terminal contagious illness person (HIV)asking for a cruel proof of pure love.Now add to this person the blessing of being physically beautiful, and still looking good (like a bad apple, beautiful red outside and rotten inside). Then someone ambitiously interested approach, and with an illness confession try to find out how far the person will go “if you want my love”. The person tell and confess how miserably and hard his life turned, or how bad the life for the other person also will be, and if still interested, and true love is behind this to the point of risking his health, then you will have my love .Also you might be wondering what the metaphoric song tittle “Judas” has to do with this, simple… back to early 90’s whoever were ill with hiv/aids avoid to tell their reality, and the bug was spread like a Judas kiss but in bed.Martin accuses his lover of being a liar that doesn’t keep her word.Judas and Thomas are two of Jesus Christ’s Twelve Apostles.

“‘Judas’ is an arrogant love song. We are not condoning unsafe sex. It is about wanting one hundred percent of someone in a relationship – the ultimate arrogance.”

Alan Wilder said in the May 1993 issue of Keyboard magazine:

“[T]he beginning of “Judas” has Uillean pipes recorded straight, with backwards reverb mixed in.”
